2 Kings 17

1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah began Hoshea the son of Elah to reign in Samaria over Israel nine years.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him.

Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents.

And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.

Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years.

In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,

And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the Lordcast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.

And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the Lord their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.

10 And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree:

11 And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the Lord carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke the Lord to anger:

12 For they served idols, whereof the Lord had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing.

13 Yet the Lord testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.

14 Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the Lord their God.

15 And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the Lord had charged them, that they should not do like them.

16 And they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.

17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.

18 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

19 Also Judah kept not the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.

20 And the Lord rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

21 For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the Lord, and made them sin a great sin.

22 For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them;

23 Until the Lord removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.

24 And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof.

25 And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the Lord: therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which slew some of them.

26 Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.

27 Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.

28 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the Lord.

29 Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt.

30 And the men of Babylon made Succothbenoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima,

31 And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.

32 So they feared the Lord, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places.

33 They feared the Lord, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.

34 Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the Lord, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;

35 With whom the Lord had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:

36 But the Lord, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.

37 And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore; and ye shall not fear other gods.

38 And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods.

39 But the Lord your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.

40 Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner.

41 So these nations feared the Lord, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children’s children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.

  1. v16 And they left all the commandments of the LORD their GOD , and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven and served Baal.

We are living in a day when. dangerous substitute are offered to us. It’s a sign of the last days men” Having a form of godliness” 2Tim.3:5. There’s no substitute for true worship of GOD and the move of GOD.
It’s wrong when we accept the form instead of the spiritual. Let GOD move when HE gets ready to move.
I believe JESUS comes to every service and says ; Are you with me or against me?
Matt. 10:34 JESUS said, ” I came not to bring peace but I came yo bring a sword. To slice away what’s not right. A sword hurts.
    GOD does not compromise.
We are to worship only one GOD and HIS NAME IS JESUS.
Everybody worships something. In Acts 17:23
they worship an unknown god. The devil will make sure you have a little god somewhere.
    We worship only JESUS!!!
Now days the new way of life is without a cross. Easy living for GOD. No sacrifices.
But I’m thankful for the POFW are growing and doing great things for GOD. Behind the the scences are visitations, bible studies, hours of prayer and fasting and innumerable sacrifices.
Lives living a crucified life with CHRIST and to GOD be all the GLORY.
There’s no power in the world that can separate us from the love of GOD, and I thank HIM for that discipline. Thank you JESUS for what’s HE is doing in our hearts and the joy we find in taking up HIS Cross as we cling to HIS Cross and say you can count on me LORD.

  2. Matt 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

The Message Version ends it like this: 40-41 But they didn’t pay any attention. They kept doing what they’d always done. As it turned out, all the time these people were putting on a front of worshiping God, they were at the same time involved with their local idols. And they’re still doing it. Like father, like son.

The men is the head of his household where he leads his family will follow. We need men of God ready to lead & live the correct way. Now a day some of mothers how found ourselves having to stand in the gab for our children sake.

  3. If you live for God hard its easy but if you live for God easy its hard. We have to separate ourselves from the world we are in the world but not of the world. Jesus is looking for men and women that will spread his word thru the highways and the byways.

  4. (Looks like 2 Kings 16, not 17, got posted!)

Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right

Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents. And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison. (2 Kings 17:3, 4 KJV)

A sign of slipping is when we begin to lose spiritual ground. A sign of imprisonment is when we feel the need to “pacify” the sin with gifts/tribute, or worse use another sin to try to remedy it. One thing leads to another, and as Bro Treyhan spoke to the young adults, bad decisions just have a way of multiplying.

So they feared the Lord, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. They feared the Lord, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence. Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the Lord, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel; (2 Kings 17:32-34 KJV)

We cannot become complacent and satisfied with living a form of godliness while still bound up in sin and living however it pleases us/satisfies the sin.

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (2 Peter 1:2-4 KJV)

The Holy Ghost empowers us for righteous living and helps us to keep our flesh in line, however we must first make the decision to die to that flesh and come out from the bondage of carnal lusts. We get a big red flag that that decision is lacking when our way of dealing with sin doesn’t deal with turning to God but turning to more sin; using carnality to deal with the result of carnality is like trying to use a hot iron to heal a burn. Two wrongs don’t make a right, and as Adam and Eve learned, running from God (running from repentance) doesn’t undo the sin committed. We all have a choice: we can come to judgment now where we can face our sin and apply the Blood of Christ to our wrong and be set free, or we can run and face our sin and judgment later when it’s too late for us to apply the Blood and receive life.

    Double Minded

32 So they feared the Lord, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places.

They feared the Lord and they served other gods.

It’s possible to go to church one day and sing to Jesus and then the next day have your radio on a pagan station and worship the god of this world.

    (Quote from Internet)

Michael Jackson himself “explained the reason for some of his filthy sexual gestures” was Satan.  He told Oprah way back in 1993, “It happens subliminally. IT’S THE MUSIC THAT COMPELS ME TO DO IT. You don’t think about it, it just happens. I’M A SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM.”

  6. THE DEVOURING LION

The word of the LORD declares that he is a jealous GOD. As creator of everything he is LORD or Father of everything, we read here of the demonstration of the wrath of GOD. It is obvious by this chapter that ignorance is no excuse for unrighteousness.

The LORD had cut off Israel; 20 And the Lord rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

However he refused to allow just anything to happen in the place that he gave them to dwell. We are challenged and taught here to respect the LORD of the land and the land of the LORD.

    He is

Revelation 5:5 … the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, …

Search the scriptures! We must know the WORD of GOD and the GOD of the WORD.

  7. Keep God in the center!

21 For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the Lord, and made them sin a great sin.
    22 For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them;
23 Until the Lord removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.

I found it intense, that God had to rent(rip) Isreal from the house of David. They made God so angry that He had to take them from His sight just so He would not destroy them.

Then it says this:32 So they feared the Lord, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places.
    33 They feared the Lord, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.34 Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the Lord, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;

They feared God ,and yet they did not worship Him. How sad to say that you know the power of God , and yet you deny the power thereof. Take the power that God has given you, and use it for the glory of God , and not to build yourself up. If you build yourself up ,God will press you down.

  8. 39 But the Lord your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.

The key to living a victorious life lies in this verse….His promise to us is that He will deliver us from the hand of the enemy if we will fear the Lord. The fear of the Lord is a reverence for Him and His power. Having this type of Godly fear will cause us to keep the commandments of the Lord and walk in a manner that is pleasing to the Lord.

    • I wish that we could make everyone fear the Lord. If everyone would ask themselfs should I fear the Lord before they make any decisons and then give themselfs time to lesson for an answer. Would be awsome

  9. I can see how leading by example is so important, the King of Israel continues to do evil in the eyes of the Lord and so is Israel. The Lord is displeased knowing they ae worshipping other Gods, they don’t fear the Lord.

Lord let your light shine on me.

  10. The children of Israel completely fell off the wagon this time. They were in a place of protection under Gods order and his headship then the leader got caught living a lie and the authorities came and took all of them. This is like the leaders of our church not paying the taxes on our church building and the Government coming and taking our church. We would all have to go to church somewhere else even though we didn’t want to. Pastor being liable for all of it, would be in a lot of trouble. I’m thankful to God that I am serving under a Man of God that is going to do what’s right in the sight of the Lord and keep his commandments. If the government ever does try to take us out of our church and we have done right in the sight of the Lord he will go before us in battle. Keep us straight Pastor we need you!

  11. We must make up our mind to fear the Lord or fear the people of this world. God is the only one that decides if we go to heaven and that is more than enough for me to say that I will serve the Lord my God with my whole heart

  12. This chapter illustrates self. They Word of the Lord states they hardened their necks and did not believe the Lord. The Word also states the Lord removed them out of his sight for their actions. One must never put self and or anything between them and God, and one should never turn a deaf ear to the Word. God will be the judge of all, therefore one would be wise not too harden ones heart, turn a deaf ear or disobey his Word. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  13. Secret Sins

Vs. 9 says, “And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the Lord their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.”

The MSG version says that they put on a good front of worshipping God, yet at the same time, they were involved in their local idol worship.

We may put on a good act for people, but we need to remember that we serve an Omniscient and Omnipresent God. He knows all things, and he’s everywhere at all times. There is nothing we say, think, or do that is hidden from God.

Isaiah 29:15, “Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knowth us?”

Jeremiah 23:23-24, “Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I will not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord.”

This made me think of an old song we used to sing back in Illinois that was taken from the scriptures found in Ps. 139:23-24. Search me O God, and know my heart today. Try me Oh Saviour, know my thoughts I pray. See if there be some wicked way in me. Cleanse me from every sin and set me free.

  14. 41 So these nations feared the Lord, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children’s children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.

Not only did the nations do thier own thing, but they taught that mindset to their children & grandchildren. How could they fear God and not have respect unto him and his word? Proverbs 9:10 says that wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord! They obviously did not have THIS type of fear for the Lord! And the following generations were doomed to their same fate-judgement.

  15. Turning away peer pressure is a very hard thing to do. Especially when it’s all around you. But like the bible says ‘You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you’! As children of God we have to make up in our minds that we will choose God because in the end he’s the one who decides if we go to Heaven!

  16. God is a jealous God. Even Judah worshiped other gods. Nowhere was sacred. They had and sacrificed other Gods everywhere. All thier troubles were because they didn’t serve the one true God.

  17. Exodus 20:3 CEV….”Do NOT worship any god except me.”
Exodus 20:3 MSG…”NO other gods, only me.”
Exodus 20:3 NLT…..”You must NOT have any other god but me.”
Exodus 20:3 KJV…..”Thou shalt have NO other gods before me.”
Exodus 20:3 AMP….”You shall have NO other gods before or besides Me.”
Exodus 20:3 SNIV…”NO tengas otros dioses además de mí.”

Verses 37-39 NLT…”Be careful at all times to obey the decrees, regulations, instructions, and commands that he wrote for you. You must not worship other gods. 38 Do not forget the covenant I made with you, and do not worship other gods. 39 You must worship only the Lord your God. He is the one who will rescue you from all your enemies.” It is still the same “NOT” or “NO” in whatever language; yet, still many today choose to forget.

  18. secret sins

the Isrealites foolishly believe that they are sining in secret. though they know well the commands of God and continue to worhips him, they also simultaneously worship false idols “behind his back.” the psalms testify that it is the arrogant and the wicked who believe that their deeds go unseen by God (Ps 90:7-8; 94:7), and the long list of sinful acts performed by the Israelites confirms this belief (vs 7-17). The people are decieved, however, if they believe that God doesnt see what they are doing. God was and -is aware of the thoughts and occurances in everyones life, down to the tiniest detail (check Ps 139). No matter where we go, God is watching, either with us our against us. This is both a warning and a comfort; God knows every sine we commit, yet hes also intimately aware of our every need, his childrens greatest need is him. To put simply if we put our every need in God, all our trust in Him only, then we will have nothing to hide when we repent.

  19. God is a merciful god. He gives us many chances to repent. We should not be like the children of Israel and harden our hearts and not listen to him.

  20. 39 But the Lord your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.

This is a beautiful promise that last forever…
