2 Kings 22

1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath.

And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the Lord, saying,

Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the Lord, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people:

And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work, that have the oversight of the house of the Lord: and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the Lord, to repair the breaches of the house,

Unto carpenters, and builders, and masons, and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house.

Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully.

And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the house of the Lord.

10 And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

11 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.

12 And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asahiah a servant of the king’s, saying,

13 Go ye, enquire of the Lord for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.

14 So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college;) and they communed with her.

15 And she said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me,

16 Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read:

17 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched.

18 But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of theLord, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard;

19 Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the Lord.

20 Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.

Iam reminded of the vrse where it talks about how when you train up a child, he will not depart from it.

  2. v8 ” I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD ”
v13 Go ye, inquire of the LORD for me, and for the people , and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book,to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.

We must tell our children what the good LORD has done for us and for HIS Nation. Make sure that each generation tells the next one. Continue to keep telling HIS Gospel . So that we won’t lose it again. HIS Word is in the house of the LORD.
As parents we have a great responsibility
If we don’t tell our children truth no one will.
They won’t know how to live different . It they don’t the difference .
So quick is the decline when we don’t hear it preached. This gospel shall be preached!
Thank you Pastor for teaching truth to us.

    Wipe off the Dust

8 And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

I’m thankful that we have a pastor that has wiped the dust off the word and who tells us “Thus saith the Lord”.

The Word is alive and brought light to Josiah.

  4. It is strange that in the house of the Lord the Word of God was lost or hidden, because they “found” it. We should know the word and as Daved said, hide it in our hearts. This passage also shows us that there is a place of repentance if we will but turn wholly back to God.

  5. READ IT!!!!!

8 And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

I remember that when I was a kid I heard the word about “faith can move mountains”. So guess what I decided I was going to pray for the mountain to move. It moved alright, by the many earthquakes that the island has. Every time it happened my faith grew and I believed my God was listening to me and loved me. For the longest time I thought it was my prayers that was making it happen, my oldest sister got upset at me, and told me exactly how earthquakes worked and shattered my faith. Now you must understand I was only 7. That is why when my little girl prayed for a snow day and it happened I told her that her prayers were answered. Back then my faith was built on innocence, now is based on the word of God. It just seems like the more I read the more I can’t get enough. Is there such a thing, addicted to His word. Now I know for my God there are no impossibles. I know that His word is alive and is full of nutrition.

Prov 4:20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

There is life, health, joy, the cure for all, in HIS Word and all we got to do is READ IT.

Jessie-The lord is merciful on the just and on the ones who whole heartley repent
I gain more trust with the people tht seen me mess up and then i make it right .unlike the ones that don’t see me mess up

  7. ATTITUDE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

More often than not when disobedience is identified people are prone to turn away from responsibility and are shamed because of their wrong. Josiah’s response is an example for all of us follow. Obviously Josiah did not have the privilege of having a father to model a godly lifestyle before him. Mnay of us today have the incredible opportunity of following godly men (fathers) or (Pastors) in our lives; we are wise to respond as did Josiah when we hear of read in the Word of GOD of disobedience in our life or even in the life of the people we love and care about. We learn now that Josiah’s response was a sincere response from his heart.

Hebrews 3:8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

iPray today our hearts would be tender and our attitude be humble before GOD.

Humility brought peace to Josiah. Humility brings peace to our lives.

Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath:

    iPray
    iWork
    iGive

  8. Verse 2 NLT….”He did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight and followed the example of his ancestor David. He did not turn away from doing what was right.” The choice is ours, we can decide to turn away from doing what is right or we can be pleasing in the Lord’s sight like Josiah. Yes, we can allow things in our lives to influence us or persuade us; but, the choice is ours!

Joshua 24:15…”And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

  9. This chapter illustrates openness. The king’s heart was tender in the sight of the Lord. Therefore he was open to that which was right; the laborers, upkeep of the house of the Lord and the book of the law. We today must also humble ourselves before the Lord with an open and tender heart to the Word, and that which is right, for great is the evilness today. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  10. Vs. 19-20, “Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord, when thou hearest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the Lord. Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.”

As I read this passage of scripture this morning, it made me think of a few other scriptures that I would like to share.

Ps. 34:16-18, “The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off the rememberance of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

Ps. 51:17, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”

James 5:16, ” ….. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

  11. 22 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. His mother was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah from Bozkath. 2 He did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight and followed the example of his ancestor David. He did not turn away from doing what was right.

Even though King Josiah did not have a father who followed God, this shows with repentance anyone can follow God. As a child, King Josiah must of heard of God’s Word/message, because he did what was good in the Lords sight. He had a choice to make, and he decided to follow God.

The importance of taking our children & bus children to church, and letting them hear the Word of God! The children understand what is right and what is wrong at an early age.

  12. 19 Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the Lord.

This reminds me of David. He certainly had his faults yet he kept turning back to God, kept pursuing God’s heart. There was a tenderness of his heart that allowed God to lead him and help him get back up if he fell. Yet for all the virtue of those like David or Josiah, it seems we must remember ultimately not to seek after a heart “just like theirs” but to seek after God’s heart and allow Him to change our heart to be how He wants.

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10 KJV)

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 36:26 KJV)

  14. 2 Peter 2:9
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

The King realized that judgment was coming. The past sins of Judah’s wicked kings, the idolatry, and worship to false gods had sealed their fate.

Josiah recognized the error and repented. God heard this prayer and postponed judgment.

Here we see how the sacrifice on the day of atonement is a type and shadow of repentance.

just as Sacrifice on the day of atonement withheld judgment until the cross, Josiah’s repetance withheld judgment from falling on Judah while he was king. This did not mean they were doomed.

    2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us- ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

God wanted each king, and each generation to repent and live for him.

Today we have the same opportunity. If we repent and live for him then our sin will be judged on the cross.

He made a way, we just have to take it.

  15. Just outside of ancient Carthage lies one of the best known Topheth districts where young childern up to four or five . This fact that such a district existed in Judah is a stunning that Gods people were so much into paganism and sin.

  16. How important it is to read the Word of God!! In it we find life, hope, love, joy….Jesus!!
We learn how to live and have a blessed life.

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
    John 5:39

  17. Repent means to apologize and turn away from and to never do it again. God knows when someone truly repents. He will honor and strengthen those who are trying to live right. As the next generation it needs to become a daily prayer in our lives that God would open the hearts of those who don’t know their doing wrong.

  18. Go tell it on the mountain!
When the workers found the book of law they did not hide the word, keepit to themselves or try to profit from its discovery. They took it to their leadership. That leadership did the same. While none of the finders knew about the prophecy they did what they thought was correct in sharring the word.
We should be all the more eager to share the word with those we meet. We know the prophecy, we know what happens at the end of the book, we know who wins and why! Lets take our outreach/witnessing/sharing to the next level.

  19. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

Let’s not lose sight of the anointing and the blessing of God!

  20. Josiah couldn’t change the world but he tried to make it known and share the word of as God as it was written in the book of the laws that was found.

He could of turned and done evil just like other kings did. But he didn’t he loved the Lord. He knew they were in trouble because the law wasn’t followed as it was written. The Lord allowed Josiah to have a peaceful death even though there was no peace.

This chapter continues to teach me how obeying the Lord’s commands are not a choice but a command. Scripture says the Lord loves us and will bless us abundantly all we have to do is love him back, worship him, praise him, trust him, keep the faith even when your prayers haven’t come to pass. Give it all to God he is in control. He has a plan in our lives in his time and not ours. Seek him and never give up like these Kings and devil worshippers. They want to find easy way out. God is the only way.

  21. 1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath.

It is wonderful to know that God can anoint our children to work in his kingdom.

5 And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work, that have the oversight of the house of the Lord: and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the Lord, to repair the breaches of the house,

When the House of the Lord began to be repaired the book of the law was found.

When I repair things in my life the word becomes clearer to me.

8 And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

  22. 11 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.

    18 But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of theLord, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard;

This reminds me of the scripture found in 2 Chronicles 7:14
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

The King humbled himself before the Lord, sought His face and because of that He was promised to die in peace and not see the evil that the people was going to go through, because of their choices and decisions.

If we humble ourselves, even when things are now right around us, God will see us through, and bring us out and honor our obedience to His word, inspite of the situation. God cannot lie, and His word will not return void. That which He has promised He is able to perform.

  23. 19 Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the Lord.

When we hear the word of the Lord preached to us and we are taught God’s word, we too must be tender to it through heart felt repentance and making up our minds to follow and obey.

  24. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10 KJV)

Lord help me to have an open heart to your word and to the ones that you have placed over me.

  25. The word of the Lord was lost within the church. This reminds me of today how much churches have compromised the word so that you can’t tell the difference between them and the world. So many people sin out of ignorance because the word is lost in their lives and they don’t even realize it. When the unadulterated word of God was brought forth true repentance happened. We don’t need to water down the word of God, it speaks for itself and only it can bring restoration and healing. A hurting world needs a miracle healing not a band aid and pat on the back. Teach and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the only one that matters, not the gospel according to whoevers personal interpretation. The word in black and white will be what saves people not the gray areas created out of fear of offense.

  26. I can’t help but think of Anthony. He is eight years old. I could not imagine him running a country. Josiah must have had excellent people who were advisors and teachers of the word. Maybe some of the people told him stories about how blessed his great grand father Hezekaih was when he tore down the high places and only worshiped God.

Then later when Josiah is 26 he was so yeilded to God that he heard the book of the law and knew that his people were doing wrong in the site of God. His reverence and humility toward God allowed time for repentance of the people, but it does not mention that they were repented.

Lord help us all to have Josiah’s yeilded spirit toward you and to reverently follow all of your law. –amen

  27. Our responds is what makes the difference.

18-20 “And also tell the king of Judah, since he sent you to ask GOD for direction; tell him this, GOD’s comment on what he read in the book: ‘Because you took seriously the doom of judgment I spoke against this place and people, and because you responded in humble repentance, tearing your robe in dismay and weeping before me, I’m taking you seriously. GOD’s word: I’ll take care of you. You’ll have a quiet death and be buried in peace. You won’t be around to see the doom that I’m going to bring upon this place.'” MSG

    Matt. 5:5-6
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

  28. Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched. But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of the Lord, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard; Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the Lord. Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again. (2 Kings 22:17-20 KJV)

This passage reminds me of how we all must die daily. We get caught up in our routines and errands and don’t always remember that our God is a jealous God, he wants to be loved and cherished.
If we humble ourselves before him the proper way (not for show) then our death will be a glorious one! Oh yes we will suffer on this earth but the trials and tribulations are pushing off all that debres we don’t need. I don’t know about y’all but I want my place in heaven after I die, I want to humble myself before him to die daily and reach his glorious kingdom.
Humbleness is the first step to victory, he’ll take care of the rest

  29. Thy servants have gathered the money that was found in the house,

When it comes time to build a new house, we don’t need to look outside for the money, it’s already in the house

  30. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

Josiah did not sway from what God had set into place. Staying on track is the key to our salvation.

  31. Josiah’s reign was great and he made all things right. But it only took someone else just a short time to ruin it. Pastor can teach us and lead us in the ways of the Lord but when we are outside the church we can ruin all the teachings in just a moment. Go to Church or Be Church

  32. Reform Begins Within
22:11 Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, that he tore his clothes.

Throughout his thirty-one years of godly leadership , King Josiah wholeheartedly followed the Lord and devoted himself to leading the people well. His own spiritual passion soon began to influence Judah and eventually brought about public reform..
Even today Josiah remains a vivid example of a key biblical principle : Outward reform begins with inward renewal . The leader must experience personal change before he or she can implement public change

  33. In vs 14 the priest Hilkiah, Ahikam, Achhbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Hudah the prohetess, and wife of Shallum (son of Tokhath: same name as Jeremiah’s uncle Jer:32:7 possibly the same man). Huldah, and not Jeremiah or Zephaniah, both of whom where active as prophets during this time was the go to lady for Josiah’s intrest to “inquire of the Lord” as to the meaning of the book of the Law, a scroll that had been found during the work restoration and cleaning in the temple. The Lord was trying to tell his people that they are trying to clean up and restore worldy possesions which will one day perish in judgment, but that the restoration of there relationship with God is what is dire needed. It was signifigant to me that their where so many other prophets avaliable, living in Jerusalem at the time, and the priest Hilkiah and the rest of the king’s advisors turned to woman for a word from the Lord. God can use anyone he wills..so this 86’s the reasoning that some may suggest that God only uses women for such ministry when no men are avaliable or obedient enough, Obviously, whether in a private audience or in the pressence of the congregation, God uses Huldah to bear testimony and deliver a message from Him to the High Priest and to the king Josiah. What I love the most is that she says “Thus says the Lord” a total of 4 times in her short prophecy, in which she emphasizes that she understood her responsibiltiy and opportunity to be a channel through whom God delivered His Word. She made her spiritual gifts avaliable to God, and she was obedient and faithful to deliver the Word from God to her people. God I pray you give us your eyes to see, and your mouth to speak your Word, with obedience and humility such as your vessel Huldah did.

  34. 1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath.
2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

Teaching our children the word of God at at a young age helps them
To understand structure of life easier as they grow in righteous. I thank God for the Shepard in my family’sl life.
