1 Chronicles 24

1 Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest’s office.

And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.

And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar, and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers.

Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.

And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.

Now the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,

The third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,

The fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,

10 The seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah,

11 The ninth to Jeshuah, the tenth to Shecaniah,

12 The eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim,

13 The thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,

14 The fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer,

15 The seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Aphses,

16 The nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezekel,

17 The one and twentieth to Jachin, the two and twentieth to Gamul,

18 The three and twentieth to Delaiah, the four and twentieth to Maaziah.

19 These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the Lord, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded him.

20 And the rest of the sons of Levi were these: Of the sons of Amram; Shubael: of the sons of Shubael; Jehdeiah.

21 Concerning Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, the first was Isshiah.

22 Of the Izharites; Shelomoth: of the sons of Shelomoth; Jahath.

23 And the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth.

24 Of the sons of Uzziel; Michah: of the sons of Michah; Shamir.

25 The brother of Michah was Isshiah: of the sons of Isshiah; Zechariah.

26 The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi: the sons of Jaaziah; Beno.

27 The sons of Merari by Jaaziah; Beno, and Shoham, and Zaccur, and Ibri.

28 Of Mahli came Eleazar, who had no sons.

29 Concerning Kish: the son of Kish was Jerahmeel.

30 The sons also of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites after the house of their fathers.

31 These likewise cast lots over against their brethren the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites, even the principal fathers over against their younger brethren.

  1. v3 And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimslech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.

GOD is working and we must do what we can do. HE knows everything we do for HIM and HIS KINGDOM. Nothing is ever wasted. GOD takes notice of every detail and every detail mattered to David because he served the the from his heart.
Whatever we do for the LORD it’s got to come from the heart.

  2. 5 Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.

The Hebrew people often make decisions by “drawing lots”, they believe that God directs the results, as he does all of life (Ps 16:33). Its not for certain what lots looked like or how decisions where determined of them. However the Bible records the use of this practice in many important ocassions: like when the promised land was divided into territories back in Joshua, when Saul was chosen as king (1Sa 10:20-24) , To decide who would get specific plunder after battle defeat (Nah 3:10;Oba 1:11), even to fulfil scripture after Jesus’ death to divide his seamless clothing (Jhn 19:24)

Here David’s job is to divide up the “officals of the sactuary and the officals of the God” in an impartial way. Although this decision making seems haphazard to me, it is God’s will for his people under the old covenant. I’ve come to this conclusion because the very last recorded use of casting lots is in Acts 1:26 in order to chose a disciple to replace Judas Iscariot. One verse later the Holy Ghost comes to dwell within His believers, afterward casting lots is never again mentioned in Scripture. Today we have the privlege of communication directly with God through his Spirit’s work in our minds, hearts, and spirits. Thank you Jesus, we no longer have to cast lots.

  3. Everything and Everyone must have an order.

3 And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.

God created everything with a specific purpose and order. That order must be kept if we want to stay in His Blessings. It has nothing to do with abuse, when someone abuses the order they become an abomination in the eyes of God. It has to do with doing everything, your chores, your work, your cleaning, yes even taking the garbage out; do it unto the Lord. So do you do your best or just enough to get by? If Christ Himself was coming to inspect your work what will He say?

17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

    22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God;

    23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

    Strange Fire

And Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord, when they offered strange fire before the Lord, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the sight of Aaron their father. (Numbers 3:4 KJV)

  5. Evryone has a place or a “job” to do in the Kingdom of God. We should not be slack in the caring out of our responsibility.

  6. ORDER IN THE HOUSE

These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the Lord, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded him. (1 Chronicles 24:19 KJV)

God established early in formalized worship that he would ordain order in the service of his house. God’s established order of authority was respected and fulfilled.

To usurp authority or jump over delegated authority is to break your covering and leave yourself vulnerable to adversaries.

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. (Hebrews 13:17 KJV)

Grace and Peace to you all in Jesus name.

  7. We all have been called to minister, different positions in the church. You name it whatever it is, we have been placed here at POFW, not to sit back and relax. But to reach out and further the Kingdom of God. I must do my part, and work in wherever God has placed me. All for HIS Glory!!

  8. Everyone in their place.
Sometimes we find ourselves in a place in life we did not sign up for. The advertisement was joy and happiness and all the things you thought you wanted. However, once the sheen wears off the “actual” package/thing/life is not what was originally thought or advertised to be. It is an unpopular prayer (one I have been cautioned to pray); the prayer or patience, but when we find ourselves in our “place” we must endure. Tis for a season and this too shall pass. We will overcome and be as pure gold on the other side of wherever we find ourselves in life.

  9. This chapter illustrates order. There was a certain manner on how things were to be done and by whom, as there is still a certain manner on how things are to be done and by whom today. One must never forget; the Word of God (Jesus), the house of God and the man of God should be revered, and there directions adhered, as they will lead one to eternal salvation. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  10. There was order and structure to everything God put into place from beginning at creation even as we see in this chapter, in dividing according to their office of service for them to come into the house of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 14:40 says “Let all things be done decently and in order.”

They were ordered according to their service. Today our ordering starts wtih the Pastor, the man of God, then every other leader /department head flows down from there. Annointing flows down. We must be in our proper place, and have the proper attitude of submission in order for the anointing to flow to us.

  11. Gotta have order in the church.

For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. I Corinthians 14:33 KJV

Could you imagine a church without order? I don’t believe it would be one I would want to go to. As the verse says God is not the author of confusion so God would not be in that church. Let’s all find our place at POFW and walk it out. When we are in order it makes the spirit flow more freely in our services.

  12. 3 And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.

With the help of Zadok, who was a descendant of Eleazar, and of Ahimelech, who was a descendant of Ithamar, David divided Aaron’s descendants into groups according to their various duties. (1 Chronicles 24:3 NLT)

Within the ministries of the church, it is important that we have unity. Whole congregation unity is important, but intra-ministry unity is also key. These sub-divisions of the sons of Aaron were distributed into groups, which speaks of collections of members that belong *together.* To keep in God’s order, we must have proper order “vertically” and “horizontally.”

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. (Hebrews 13:17 KJV)

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. (Ephesians 5:21 KJV)

  13. order is very important to God and in the church. without order nothing can get done in the way to please God

  14. 4 And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar, and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers.
5 Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.

We all have are place in the church body. As we see here everyone had their duty in the church, therefore we need everyone to be apart of the church. All are called to ministry but few are chosen. This means that even though we are all called, many will not take the call to serve. So now the question is, will you serve?

  15. 3 And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.

The New Testament Church has order as well. The Lord has established and set us in the ministry as he see fit. Thank God for a Pastor who will distribute us according to the office we are called to.

For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: -Titus 1:5

For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. -Hebrews 7:17

And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. -Revelation 5:10

  16. t5 Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.

A governor exercises authority over an area or group. These chief men were the top leaders and they were to oversee that the sanctuary & the service were done properly. They had great responsibilities that came with being ‘chief’. Many looked to them so their roles were critical in the keeping of order in the temple.
Whatever our role is in the church, others look to us and we too must be doing things decently & in order.

  17. Reading this reminds me of Eli and his two sons. Eli took care of Samuel. Eli’s sons grew up serving. They were involved in the ministry, but they did not choose to make it personal. Samuel heard the voice of God calling in the night. He was close enough to hear his voice. Eli’s sons chose to walk away from God, they were lost in the church.

The foundation of ministry is the rock. Jesus said “upon this rock will I build my church”

Today, all of our ministering should be built on the rock. The rock being the relationship with Jesus.

Samuel can’t live without the relationship he had with God. Eli’s boys lost their lives because they chose to abandon relationship.

  18. Order in the house! God spends a lot of time setting things in order. If you have a big puzzle and missing on peace then that puzzle cannot be completed. I pray that God would let us see the big picture.

  19. 19 These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the Lord, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded him.

This chapter is a biblical example of order and stucture in the church of God. We as the servants of God must be willing to operate within that order to be sucessfull in the work of God.

According to Titus we as leaders must also be willing to work with others that God has placed under us to ensure there is proper understanding of that order it is a two way street that flows back and forth between leadership and laity.
    7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

    8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;

  20. Like the descendants of Aaron, they were assigned to their duties by means of sacred lots, without regard to age or rank. Lots were drawn in the presence of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the family leaders of the priests and the Levites. (1 Chronicles 24:31 NLT)

Age and placement were strictly followed unless there was something special that happened to cause people not to follow age.–giving up the birthright, being kicked out of Father’s house… This convention was not usually followed ( the casting lots without regaurd to birth order).

  21. David followed commands from the Lord. He saw it necessary to put order amongst the Levites so they could be accounted for according to the responsibility assigned to them.

All order is put in place so no one is left behind without an assignment for it will please God to do his good works.

  22. 1 Chronicles 24:5 CEV reads “However, both families included temple officials and priests, and so to make sure the work was divided fairly, David asked God what to do.” David realized how important it was to take everything before God and follow his commands.

1 Chronicles 24:19 CEV “These men were assigned their duties at the temple, just as the Lord God of Israel had commanded their ancestor Aaron.”

  23. 3 And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.

We all have a place in the Body of the Church. Not everyone can be the head or the arms. God places you where you are needed the most.
