2 Chronicles 21

1 Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

And he had brethren the sons of Jehoshaphat, Azariah, and Jehiel, and Zechariah, and Azariah, and Michael, and Shephatiah: all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.

And their father gave them great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with fenced cities in Judah: but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram; because he was the firstborn.

Now when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself, and slew all his brethren with the sword, and divers also of the princes of Israel.

Jehoram was thirty and two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord.

Howbeit the Lord would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.

In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king.

Then Jehoram went forth with his princes, and all his chariots with him: and he rose up by night, and smote the Edomites which compassed him in, and the captains of the chariots.

10 So the Edomites revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. The same time also did Libnah revolt from under his hand; because he had forsaken the Lord God of his fathers.

11 Moreover he made high places in the mountains of Judah and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit fornication, and compelled Judah thereto.

12 And there came a writing to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah,

13 But hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and hast made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a whoring, like to the whoredoms of the house of Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren of thy father’s house, which were better than thyself:

14 Behold, with a great plague will the Lord smite thy people, and thy children, and thy wives, and all thy goods:

15 And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day.

16 Moreover the Lord stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, that were near the Ethiopians:

17 And they came up into Judah, and brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king’s house, and his sons also, and his wives; so that there was never a son left him, save Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.

18 And after all this the Lord smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease.

19 And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.

20 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being desired. Howbeit they buried him in the city of David, but not in the sepulchres of the kings.

  1. v12 ” And he was with them hid in the house of GOD six years: and Athaliah reigned over the land.

The scripture says that intimacy with GOD is
under HIS wing, in the secret place, hidden with GOD. HE WILL hide us under the rock.
Praise The LORD! The LORD KNOWS what HE is doing, and HE does ALL things well.

All things work together for good to them that love GOD, to them who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

The devil cunningly appears to our flesh in things that may seem innocent but later it becomes a snare to us.

v 10 But when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah.
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10
We are the seed of Abraham and we are blessed.

The Wages of Sin is Death

12 And there came a writing to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah,

THE WORD WAS SPOKEN AND THE WORD WAS FULFILLED.

The Word of God has been written and the Word will be enforced. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8 KJV)

Let’s get our heart right. Let’s receive the blessing of God, not the curses of God.

  4. The fruit of envy.

He was envious and fear his siblings for they were better than him.

13 But hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and hast made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a whoring, like to the whoredoms of the house of Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren of thy father’s house, which were better than thyself:

What a way to begin your kingdom by killing your siblings, a lot of people still think that the only way to have power is to destroy everyone that may be a threat to theirs. So they begin speaking lies about that person & spreading rumors until they kill their reputation and finish taking the competition out of their way. All because they feel insecure about themselves and they get envious of what others have. The key is to be content, believe in what God has said, and he will make you great. We must have Faith & the simplicity of a child, believe and take His word for it is true & He will make a way to greatness.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

  5. 21:12-15 Elijah’s letter specifically announces the immediate consequences of Jehoram’s disobedience – further defeat in war, which will cost Jehoram his wives and sons ; and disease , which will lead to his death

  6. Its unfortunate that after the regin of 2 temple reformers: Asa and Jehosaphat, that Jehoram and Ahaziah, two wicked kings immediately follow. The sin of and curses on Jerhoram and Ahaziah where the direct result of Jehosaphat’s alliance with Ahab, from which the houe of David just barely survived (vs6). Jehoram’s sin was against the throne of David and ultimately against the Lord (vs4-7). The curse of constant warfare “because he had forsaken the Lord God of his fathers.” (vs10). The people, Jehoram’s family, and Jehoram himself would therefore all suffer (vs14-15,18-20). When all was said and done, he was so wicked that Scripture documents that no one mourned his death (vs20). Prv 12:7 “Wicked men are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous stands firm” God kept is promise to keep David’s bloodline of kings ongoing, in doing so He also purged out the wicked from it as well. Lord, I pray that you prune every branch in me that doesnt produce fruit like to pruned away the wicked kings from Israel and continue to offer new opportunities to grow according to your Will as I abide in you. John 15:2 “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away:and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit”
Praise God for he is great and merciful and worthy to be praised!

  7. Kings don’t often die without a send off. Many times they have great elaborate funerals that everyone wants to attend. Even in the spiritual it is the same way. If you have made a king of drugs, alcohol, tabacco, etc. and you get rid of them your natural body goes into withdrawal. The withdraw is their funeral, their burnings. We all need to be more Christ like and burry those kings in our lives (coke and sugars included) without a kingly burial because they are not what we should have reigning in our lives.

  8. With the privilege of leadership comes great responsibility and accountability. Don’t think so? Jehoram would agree with me. With his appointment to leadership he made bad decision after bad decision. He had a great father to follow as an example, but chose to lead in similar fashion to other kings of Israel. He paid a heavy price. Not just death and dishonor; but a horrible disease for years.
Aristotle once said “He who has never learned to obey cannot be a good commander.” Jehoram needed some lessons on training up a child. What happened in Jehoshaphat’s home that set Jehoram on such a destructive path? Not only was he a bad leader, but killed all his brothers. Lord, help us to be aware of what we are teaching our children.

  9. This chapter illustrates greed. Jehoram was not content with what was given unto him, therefore his greed consumed him and he slew his own brethren. One must be thankful of what one has elsewise greed will consume and destroy all that one has. One must remember the greatest riches cannot be bought; Holy ghost, family, friends, health, etc. Be thankful. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  10. TRIUMP TO TRAGEDY

12 And there came a writing to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah,

What went wrong? Questions that fathers and prophet’s have asked for generations. Jehoram what is wrong with you? What happened to you? Did you not hear of the victories of your father? Did you not witness the peace and blessigs that were in your house? Do you not remember how your father sought the counsel of the prophet’s? You denied even your own name, Jehoram = “Jehovah is exalted”.

Was it boring to serve the GOD of your fathers? Are you more wise than your fathers? Do you want to make a name for yourself? Are you too lazy to pray? When and where did this evil enter into your heart? Why were you so insecure that you had to murder your own brothers? Why would you want to see a nation of fornication and not righteousness? Why did you choose a false prophet’s daughter to marry? How did it not bother you to do evil in the sight of GOD?

Could you not remember the TRIUMP of how your father sought the LORD and how HE devoured 3 adversaries at 1 time while your father’s appointed choir “sends up Judah” with singing, shouting and praising GOD?

Now, your TRAGEDY of demise and defeat:
16 Moreover the Lord stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, that were near the Ethiopians:
17 And they came up into Judah, and brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king’s house, and his sons also, and his wives; so that there was never a son left him, save Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.
18 And after all this the Lord smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease.

Not much fun now huh? In 8 short years you lost EVERYTHING!

In place of GOD confusing your adversaries, he is directing them toward you and giving them your stuff right in front of your eyes.

    The choice is ours:

Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

  11. Jehoram married Athaliah, one of the daughters of King Ahab of Israel. She became the mother of Judah’s next king, Ahaziah. Athaliah’s mother was Jezebel, the most wicked woman Israel had ever known. Jehoram’s marriage to Athaliah was Judah’s downfall, for Athaliah brought her mother’s wicked influence into Judah, causing the nation to forget God and turn to Baal worship. Jehoram’s reign was marked by sin and cruelty. He married a woman who worshiped idols; he killed his six brothers; he allowed and even promoted idol worship. He was not killed in battle or by treachery, he died a lingering and painful disease. Punishment for sin is not always immediate or dramatic, but if we ignore God’s laws we will eventually suffer the consequences of our sin.

  12. what is greed? selfish and excessive desire for more or something that is needed.
“He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not”. Proverbs 21:26
“He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live”. Proverbs 15:27

Don’t get caught up in the greedy attitude. We will not win with that kind of attitude. God will knock us back down where we belong if we get that attitude. Our children are watching how we do things and they will pick up on what we do and how we do.

  13. 7 Howbeit the Lord would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.

Regardless of mans pride, unrighteousness, and disobedience God will not break his covenant with His Church. We must reverence and respect the mantel of God that has been past on to us from previous generations and fight the fight of faith.

Just as the burden of this country is upon the shoulders of the men and women fighting for our freedom; the burden for the souls of this region and the generations to come after us should cause us to walk in righteousness and be a example of His Word.

Lord let ,my actions today lead others to your throne room.

      • 16-18 So, my very dear friends, don’t get thrown off course. Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. He brought us to life using the true Word, showing us off as the crown of all his creatures. James 1:16-18 MSG

21-27 The main street of the City was pure gold, translucent as glass. But there was no sign of a Temple, for the Lord God—the Sovereign-Strong—and the Lamb are the Temple. The City doesn’t need sun or moon for light. God’s Glory is its light, the Lamb its lamp! The nations will walk in its light and earth’s kings bring in their splendor. Its gates will never be shut by day, and there won’t be any night. They’ll bring the glory and honor of the nations into the City. Nothing dirty or defiled will get into the City, and no one who defiles or deceives. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life will get in.
        Rev. 21:21-27 MSG

I just had this thought this week and it goes with your blog.
We cannot be hid because of where the source of light is coming from. It’s the GLORY of Jesus Christ! When we get home to our New City we won’t need the Sun or Moon for light. He will be our light.

  14. Decisions made on a daily basis have eternal lasting effects. Jehoram decided to not walk in the way of his father, but allowed pride to rise up within him, thinking he had a better plan, and could do things a better way. This brought devastation, not only to him spiritually and physically, but it effected his entire family. Instead of receiving the blessings of the Lord, they were cursed.

We must make every decision based upon the instructions from the word of God. Wisdom and knowledge can be found in it’s pages, and we must take the time to seek God diligently regarding every decision of life.

We are living epistles, known and read of all men. What example are we portraying first to our families, then to the world? Those we are leading are watching us carefully. We must stay submitted, humble, and prayerfully in the Word of God, so that we don’t take a detour or become deceived and cost our entire family their spirituality.

  15. 6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord.

7 Howbeit the Lord would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever. It’s a fathers desire to see their children live a life that is Holy And Seperated from the world. A life that is Blessed and not Cursed! There will always be a price that will be paid if we choose to walk in sin.
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. (Romans 8:13 KJV)
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23 KJV)

    FREE WILL

12 And there came a writing to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah…

Why did the king choose to go astray? What could Jehoshaphat have done differently?

I don’t believe Jehoshaphat could have done anything different… Jehoram had a FREE WILL. Adam and Eve were children of God who were perfect as far as sin was conserned. They had a PERFECT Father (God was their Father). They had dominion over the earth, dominion over the devil, authority over every animal. What else could God have done to “raise” them better, what better of an example could He have been… They had FREE WILL…

    • Thankful for the Lords FREE WILL 🙂

And it was of His own [free] will that He gave us birth [as
sons] by [His] Word of Truth, so that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His
creatures [a sample of what He created to be consecrated to Himself]. (James 1:18 AMP)

  17. And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death. (James 1:13-15 NLT)

More of you Lord and less of me! It all starts from your heartfelt desires. We need a pure heart full of desires to please the Lord.

  18. v20″ And he departed with no one’s regret.”
They buried him in the city of David but not in the tombs of the king’s.”

Influenced by evil will bring dishonor and cause the people to say ….good riddance.

    The proverbs of the day
When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting. Proverbs 11:10

The prophet Jeremiah gives us tremendous insight. He wished he had died than to face all the evil problems. Problems that make you want to weep instead of shouting
Jeremiah cursed his birthday. Jeremiah 20:14

The church must never lose the spirit of thanksgiving , prayer, praise, faithfulness and reading of HIS WORD.
GOD has given us power the influence to touch many hearts with HIS PROMISE OF THE HOLY GHOST.
Thank you JESUS for a strong heathly spiritual mother ( the church ) to spiritually give birth to new babes in Christ.Rejoice inthe LORD always!
    iRejoice

  19. In this scripture, it is apparent how God felt about fornication or whoring. So, if there is any sin in your life, repent and be washed. Thank God for mercy and grace and the blood of Jesus.

    “Be Church”…iwork…igive…ipray…ireap…..

  20. 7 Howbeit the Lord would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever

The promises of God are always true. God keeps his word in this chapter and even though he was greatly angered at what he did he did not destroy the house of David. I am thankfull that I serve a God who keeps his promises for ever…

  21. 6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord.
7 Howbeit the Lord would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.

I often wonder if even I understand how Merciful God truly is. He did not go back on His promise to keep the house of David. Even though generations didn’t do right in His sight. I take for granted the love and mercy God has for me. God will not go back on any promise in anyones life.

  22. He lived under the protection that came as a result of David’s commitment to God. Yet, Jehoram chose the ways of the world.

His consequences caught up with him. He reigned 8 years and suffered deeply for abandoning God.

Leadership is vital. To be a leader we must lead at all times. Jehoram forgot about the good of the people and served himself.

It’s all about the people, and God.

  23. 12And there came a writing to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah,…

The word of God is the word of God. More often we see that the prophets spoke face to face with the kings but here elijah wrote to him. Still the word of the Lord came to pass even without the prophet being present. How often do we want a man of God to come and speak into our lives when God has provided His word for us already? I have known people who have gone to church to hear the spoken word but never read the bible for themselves. We want answers but so many times we want someone to hand them to us instead of finding them for ourselves. The written word of God is real and has been tried and found true. Trust the bible, its straight from God.

  24. 6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord.

We must be ever vigilant to be equally yoked, and guard against sin. We would be fools if we were to think that we wouldn’t circome to the sin as the same ones we associate with…

  25. 20 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being desired. Howbeit they buried him in the city of David, but not in the sepulchres of the kings.

Eight years did Jehoram reign in Judah. He slew his brothers, married Ahab’s daughter and took up the ways of Ahab.

6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord.

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. -Galatians 6:7-8

There’s no wonder his life ended the way it did and the people that serve him did not even honor him in death.

  26. Scripture in this chapter is showing how God doesn’t tolerate disobedience. Jehoram wasn’t like his father nor like his grandfather, he chose evil. The enemy took over Judah when Jehosaphat died.

Jehoram’s heart was hard and foolish to think his position gave him the right to destroy and kill lives like it didn’t matter. Jehoram knew better but chose to do evil in the eyes of God.

The choices that we make have consequences when they don’t line up with God’s commands. God knows everything, can’t hide.

    Lord I seek you.

  27. from the inside out

And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.

when sin enters into your life it devours you like this form the inside out. It is like an alchoholic that started drinking to get the edge off. Noone knew he was drinking because it started with just a litle at night when noone was around to see it. THis lead to casual drinking at social events and
then bars. This lead to having alllnighters at the house, then missing work because of the hangover, then the hair of the dog the next morining, then it starts all over agian. Then you wake upone day and the octor says your liver is completly gone and you need a transplant. You lose your composure and drink till it quits hurting. All the while the liver is now sending poison to your heart throuh your blood, then it happens……..you lost your life to the internal eating that seemingly snuck up on you but if someone turned you inside out we could see the gradual decay form the inside out and see your life slipping away from you.

we have o realize the more sin we allow ourselves to say “well that isnt so bad it wont hurt me” this is just piling up on the inside. the kinds of things like pornography and unclean thoughts eat you up from the inside till its too late. this is a trick form the devil. he wants us to look in the mirror and say “see God this didnt kill me like you said it would” but only to find out it was killing you the second you let the thought of it in.

im sure that most of the people couldnt see what was happening to the king as he was slowly being put to death by his disobedience. They only started noticing when it was too late. For him it was to late when the word of the prophet came. Its not too late for most of us.

  28. V6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord.

I can’t help but wonder if this could have been avoided if Jehoshaphat had stayed clear of Ahab. It seemed Jehoshaphat submitted to the influence of Ahab and his son was the one to bear the real fruit of it.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. (Exodus 20:4-6 KJV)

We must walk with lives of purity and consecration unto God; the waves that rock our boat may send us flailing but whereas we might recover, that same wave we caused may capsize someone else in the process.

  29. And their father gave them great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with fenced cities in Judah: but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram; because he was the firstborn

Jehoram was the eldest and to be the eldest is to be the strength of the father and to be firstborn is to be holy according to Luke 2:23. But Jerhoram was did not live up to his heritage. Somewhere in his life as a young man, his father took up an alliance with Ahab, and Jerhoram was introduced to another way of doing things. He was introduced to evil & seducing spirits. Marrying Ahab’s daughter shows where his heart was and that he was not shocked by Ahab & Jezebel’s way of accomplishing things like he should have been. God’s judgement on Jehoram was swift perhaps because this man seems capable of many more atrocities. There is a warning here to parents today-what may seem like a harmless indulgence for you may have profound effects on your children.
