2 Chronicles 34

1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years.

And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.

And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.

And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.

And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.

And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.

Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the Lordhis God.

And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.

10 And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the Lord, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the Lord, to repair and amend the house:

11 Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.

12 And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick.

13 Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.

14 And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the Lord given by Moses.

15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.

16 And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it.

17 And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.

18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

19 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.

20 And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king’s, saying,

21 Go, enquire of the Lord for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of theLord, to do after all that is written in this book.

22 And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.

23 And she answered them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,

24 Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:

25 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.

26 And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the Lord, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;

27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith theLord.

28 Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.

29 Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

30 And the king went up into the house of the Lord, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the Lord.

31 And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

32 And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve theLord their God. And all his days they departed not from following the Lord, the God of their fathers.

      Vs30-34 MSG
30-34 One day I walked by the field of an old lazybones,
      and then passed the vineyard of a lout;
      They were overgrown with weeds,
thick with thistles, all the fences broken down.
      I took a long look and pondered what I saw;
the fields preached me a sermon and I listened:
“A nap here, a nap there, a day off here, a day off there,
sit back, take it easy—do you know what comes next?
Just this: You can look forward to a dirt-poor life,
with poverty as your permanent houseguest!”

    Awesome Word!!!
It sounds like they found what somebody else had sown in the past. Men moved that had moved by faith by writing the book of the law . They also found money in the house of the LORD.v 17
( every thing we have ever lost or needs to restored we can find in the house of the LORD.)
Josaih humbled himself before the LORD.
Just as a person that sees the plan of salvation humbly listen to the word of the LORD, with an open and hungry heart.

Praise GOD that at the POFW the Word of the LORD IS NOT IN OBSCRURITY. We are encouraged everyday to eat the word of the LORD. i Blog
” And he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear to fear the LORD his GOD,to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them”

It’s important to be consistent in our walk with the LORD. Return with true repentance.
The LORD know how to take pride away,
as we allow HIS WORD purge, and mean business with GOD ,as Josiah did.
Keep on praying, fasting, weeping and digging in GOD’S WORD . HE WILL give you more.
LORD … Help us ( me ) to be found faithful and in our place by our leadership others wil follow.
One must becareful not to destroy what does not belong to us, as the king’s of Judah did in the past destroying GOD’S property and faced with GOD’S wrath that was not quenched.v25

  2. Out of the mouth of babes

3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.

This is why we have bus ministry and youth, for it is them that will fight and bring down the idols of this world. Lord give our youth a heart for the lost, give them strength in your Faith to do the impossible things through You. Give them a desire to serve You and Labor for You. Show them that they are not alone that they can stand up and take what the enemy had stolen. Show them Lord that they can claim their father and their mother. Let them be a light to their families. Let them cast down all idols that might be at their homes. Show them Lord that it begins at home. In Jesus Holy Name.

33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve theLord their God. And all his days they departed not from following the Lord, the God of their fathers.

It’s nice to hear about the life of a good honest king. Josiah was a great leader, no wonder the Crocketts named thier son Josiah. 🙂

  4. “It’s In The House Of The LORD”

Through wisdom is a house builded; and understanding it is established:
And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
    Proverbs 24:3-4

Proverbs 24:13-14. My son, eat thou honey because it is good; ( eat this book everyday because it is good) and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:
So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

HIS SWEET WORD IS FOUND IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD , and it is good and sweet to our taste. Wisdom and knowledge for our souls then our reward and our expectation shall not be cut off.

  5. Wow what a great wonder the Lord is this is not a wonder but a fact.
This chptr is a good way thay the Lord speakd to us by His word…He has laws (commandments) AND HE has values that He eccepts us to do. I pray that ilisten instead of doing things my way.
The Lord is great and GREATLY to be praised!!
Thanks for letting me do this blog imiss the Word on a daily basis, igot to…unpack(find) my Bible….Godbless yall and have a wonderful Jesus’ Day.

  6. 15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.

The priests were prepared. The temple was cleansed. The worldliness was removed, and the false gods were torn down.

The atmosphere was created, and then God’s word was found.

This is why the altar of praise, worship, praise, and approach is so important in a church service.

Without the preparation of the heart the seed will not land on soft fertile ground.

  7. vs 26-28 Even though those around us may be in trouble, if we truly follow after the Lord and obey his commandments we will be blessed.

  8. Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

What are we teaching to our children? What are we investing into the lives of the bus children? The visitors that come to our church?
We have to be the ones that stand in the gap and intercede for the lost souls. I pray Lord help me not to be a stumbling block for anyone. Help me to be more compassionate for the hurting and to love like God loves.

  9. DODGING DESTRUCTION

21 Go, enquire of the Lord for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of theLord, to do after all that is written in this book.

The judgment of GOD is as sure as the Mercy of GOD. Both will happen based on how GOD is approached. The WORD of GOD reveals to us a few steps taken here in chapter 24 that will direct us in DODGING DESTRUCTION that is prepared for the wicked of the earth.

    1. ENQUIRE OF THE LORD – It is wise to have enough care and concern for your own eternal well being to approach the with whom we have to do and find out where we are in regards to HIS WORD.

    2. OPENLY REPENT BEFORE GOD – Repentance is an outward, open brokenness before GOD, displayed through humiliation and sorrow.
27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith theLord.

    3. DEDICATE AND COMMIT YOUR LIFE TO GOD – Death (Repentance) without Resurrection (Commitment) will rob our future of the promises of GOD. HE is the way truth and LIFE, as we commit ourselves to HIM we posses HIS LIFE.
31 And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

  10. When Josiah read the book that Hilkiah discovered, he responded with repentance and humility and promised to follow God’s commands as written in the book. The Bible is God’s word to us, “living and active” but we cannot know what God wants us to do if we do not read it. Even reading God’s Word is not enough; we must be willing to do what is says. An unread Bible is as useless as a lost one.

  11. Change!

Josiah found grace in the sight of the Lord by humbling himself repenting and CHANGING to the standards of God. Had he the same spirit as past Kings, he would likely have been made an example of like the others. However, because of his humbleness and repentant spirit his days were filled with peace. His eyes were saved from the from seeing the evil that was to become. What a great God!

  12. 1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years.

2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.

This would be the desire of every parent that their child would seek such a relationship with God. This definitely takes away the excuse that a youth cannot live for God. Josiah walked in the ways of the Lord like unto David because somewhere in his short lived life, he had an example. Whoever it was that lived the Godly commandments before put something into him that caused him to desire to follow after the Lord.

This is so important to us as parents. We cannot be a “don’t do as I do, do as I say” parent. We must show be example. If we don’t worship, our children won’t worship. If we are caught up in carnal activities, our children will be caught up in carnal activities. If we don’t pray and read the word at home, so our children can hear and see, our children will not pray and study the word at home. If we aren’t a soul winner, our children will not learn soul winning. God has given us children to teach and train in the way of the Lord. My prayer is that we as leaders will rise up and lead our families in the commandments of the Lord. Obey God’s voice, keep His charge, His commandments, His statues, and His law. This is the recipe for leading our homes in this day and hour.

  13. This chapter illustrates inheritance. Josiah did that what was right in the sight of the Lord. Whereas he inherited a kingdom from those that did not, as such they were faced with the Lord’s wrath. One must be mindful of what one does if not for self then for those that one leaves behind, else they could inherit that which they did not deserve. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  14. I can’t imagine the mess that they had to clean up. This verse proves that no matter the size of the mess, your age or your knowledge of the Law you can still make it right by obeying what you know, repenting and purifying yourself with prayer.

  15. V31. There is such a drastic difference in our lives when we are in position. It says here that josiah stood in his place and what follows is pleasing to God. We see the difference from David’s most notable mistake when he decided to neglect his position and fell into temptation. What followed was heartache and pain. A main difference i see is josiah humbled himself before the Lord then moved into position whereas Davids choice brought him to be humble. Lets stay in position and humble ourselves before we have to be humbled.

    THE EYES OF THE LORD

2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

“Did what was right in the sight of The Lord”

The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. (Proverbs 15:3 KJV)

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. (1 Peter 3:12 KJV)

For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars. (2 Chronicles 16:9 KJV)

  17. Verse 25 sums up america. We have open the doors to all walks of life and we are now repeating the tower of babel. There are so many voices out there and some don’t know who to believe in or who to listen to.Elijah had that same problem and said,The God who answers by setting fire to the wood is the true GOD.

  18. 8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God.

After purging is repairing. There must be a preparation for the work of the Lord:

Psalm 127:1 “Except Jehovah build the house, They labor in vain that build it: Except Jehovah keep the city, The watchman waketh but in vain”

And building is through the Word:

14 And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the Lord given by Moses.

Luke 6:47-48 “Every one that cometh unto me, and heareth my words, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like: he is like a man building a house, who digged and went deep, and laid a foundation upon the rock: and when a flood arose, the stream brake against that house, and could not shake it: because it had been well builded.”

1 Corinthians 10:4 “…and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ”

We must get away the unclean, DIG until we find the ROCK foundation where the waters of life spring from, and let the house of God be BUILT there according to His plan (a house the can weather the STORM)!

  19. In this scripture, this king made the right decision to make and keep a covenant with God, to walk in his ways, and he cleansed the land of abominations.

Just look at what’s going on today, in America, or other countries. We will be seeing some serious wrath, unless men repent of their ways, and turn to God. You thought Sodom & Gomorrah was bad, wait to see what happens to this world in the future, none the less what happens to souls when they refuse Christ Jesus. We have to keep reaching out, and do what we can. “Keep Sowing Seed”…”Keep Reaping”….”Keep Digging”…

31 And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve theLord their God. And all his days they departed not from following the Lord, the God of their fathers.

  20. It had to be difficult for Josiah at age 12 to cleanup the acts of his people. Although I am sure he had many obstacles to go through He did the best he could. Surely He must of had wise council. Kudos fo Josiah!

  21. 4 And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.
5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.
7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.

In talking with many people lately, I have heard one common statement. God is cleaning my heart and telling me to get rid of…. He has been doing this, to prepare us for what is about to happen in our church. When a house is about to go on the market , a good home owner cleans house, and makes ready for groweth.

In growing anything, there must be a season of pruneing, which is cutting away what does not need to be there. Even if that piece is growing it must be cut away. It will hinder what will be growing there.

This, I believe, is what is happening to the church. WE have been under attack for letting go of things that have been in our lives for years. People have been pushing aside things that have bound them for years, and getting healings over those things.

God is cleaning us up, so get ready. ITS ABOUT TO EXPLODE!

  22. Vs. 3, ” For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molen images.”

I pray for our youth all the time that they would commit their ways unto the Lord, walk in his ways, and follow after righteousness.

Vs. 5-6, ” And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem. And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.”

These scriptures made me think of our prayer for the city of Fort Worth. We pray for Revival and for the souls to be saved in the city of Fort Worth, but we also pray for the Regions around about us too.

  23. Josiah started as an 8 year old to cleanse the land and city of evil, idols and idol worship. (It’s NOW time for the children of POFW to make a difference in this city!) It took him 10 years to turn it around enough to find the law of Moses. Then the correct ways / laws were reestablished. God’s judgement was still set, but his hand was stayed for a while longer because of Josiah’s tender heart toward Him.

When our children understand that they can make such a vast difference in this day & time, this world will see a revival like never before! We must see teach our children that they are the catalyst that will ignite revival fires that can spread around this world!

The scriptures of humbling ourselves and becoming as little children, or we can’t enter heaven comes to mind as I think of how powerful having child like faith is! We need this powerful child like faith and belief in God and his word to rock this world.

  24. 27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith theLord.

The Lord does hear the prayer of repentance. Thank God that he gives us a chance to turn from our ignorance or rebellion ,whatever the case may be, that he would hear the prayer of a repented sinner.

This is a perfect example of not living in the past.

If you were living in sin or overcome by your circumstances at one time in your life but you have come through that and now living for God, don’t get caught in the past. Look to your future in God and seek his will for your life. Your testimony is only to remind you of how good God is, not take you back to the mindset that you once lived in.

    Repent
Be baptized in the name of Jesus
Receive the gift of the Holy Ghost
    Shake off any destraction
    Love life more abundantly

Josiah made it right with God then moved on to do his will. In Jesus Name

  25. 4 And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.

5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.

7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.

8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the Lordhis God.

The King was committed to the Kingdom and the work of God. He made it a point to stamp out every bit of evil that he could identify in the nation Israel. He even beat into powder the very image of the idols Israel had served.

  26. 3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.

Scripture says that Josiah began to seek God at a young age, as a King he knew the Lord was the only one he should worship and praise. He brought down all idols, the Lord was pleased. The Lord knew what was in Josiah’s heart, so he spared his life. He didn’t spare the life of those who worshiped other idols. God had mercy on Josiah, he wouldn’t get to see the distruction that was ahead of him.

The Lord is merciful to all those that seek him, and worship him.
Thank you Lord for loving us even when we don’t deserve it.

  27. All

Josiah, like other temple reformers, was characterized by walking “in the ways of his father David” (vs2). Josiah cleansed Judah, Jerusalem, and all Israel from illegitimate worship (vs3-7) and reestablished the temple and temple worship (vs8-28). His 12th year was a time of the weakend of the Assyrian Empire, which made reforms easier (vs3). As a faithful king, Josiah taught the people the Law and led them in covenant renewal (vs29-33) in which the word ‘all’ is found 9 times (NKJV). The use of this word is showing the neccessity of unity of God’s people. Josiah gathered ‘all’ the men of Judah, yes ‘all’ the people great and small, He read ‘all’ the words of the Book of the Covenant. Josiah made a covenant to follow the Lord, keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with ‘all’ his heart and ‘all’ his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written. 32 “And he made ‘all’ who were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin take a stand.” Josiah removed ‘all’ the abominations from the country, and ‘all’ the days they did not depart from following the Lord. He led them in the Passover, a celebration not seen in Israel since Samuel’s time. He even exceeded Hezekiah’s celebration of the Passover (2Chr 35:1-19). He made sure all Israel gave to the repairing of the temple and joined together in temple worship (vs9; 29-33). The “Book of the Law” found has been associated with the Book of Deuteronomy (vs14).

Mark 12:33 “To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

  28. 32 And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it.

At what point do we stand against the sin that has come against this region? At what point do we lament over the souls who are hungry, hurting, or lost?? We have the authority to stand up and lead this region from it’s sinful ways, who is going to join the few already doing this???

  29. Verse 33 shows the importance and of serving God. Josiah’s obediance to God and serving God caused the people to follow and be blessed. Our obediance to God will cause those that follow to follow God too and be blessed.
