Job 31

1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

Let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity.

If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;

10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

11 For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

14 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)

19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

22 Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

25 If I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

29 If I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

38 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

  1. In this chapter we see that Job declared his many good virtues.
    Proverbs 29:30 says… A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

    Perphaps that was the lesson GOD was trying to teach Job.
    We cannot be spiritually prideful .

    Isaiah says.. ” All of our righteousness are as filthy rags.” 64:6

    HE IS OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS .

    Paul gives us good advise. One must self examine our spiritual status . Through prayer and allowing GOD’S WORD to shine in our hearts. We cannot go just on our feelings in determining GOD’S will for our lives.
    We must be honest with ourselves because GOD hates ALL sins and according to
    Rev.21:27 there will be no sin in the New Jerusalem .

    Thank GOD that HIS kindness leads to us repentance and your goodness draws me to your side
    Your mercy causes me to be like you
    Your favor is my delight
    ( as the song goes )
    You are good
    You are good
    You are good

    ” Your kindness is forever”
    ” Your goodness is forever”
    ” Your mercy is forever forever”

    ” but the righteous doth sing and rejoice

  2. 35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

    36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

    37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

    Job knows that he has been righteous before the Lord, yet he says, I would give an account unto my adversary and God should I be found guilty of unrighteousness. Our steps are ordered by the Lord, yet, one day we will all give an account of our actions.

  3. It sounds to me as if Job still looking for a reason for the trial. He keeps searching his soul to find where he went wrong that God can be punishing him this badly. I can see him reasoning as he looks through his life book. It is at times like this that we need to hold fast to HIS promises, to HIS word, and to HIS love.

    Deut. 28:11 And the Lord shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

    12 The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

    Hold on fast, STAND on your FAITH, believe in HIS Promises. THIS TOO SHALL PASS!!!

    The Covenant

    Hice pacto con mis ojos; ¿Cómo, pues, había yo de mirar a una virgen? (Job 31:1 RVR60)

    This chapter in the book of Job has always been a favorite of mine for a couple of reasons.

    1. Because it warns us what will happen if we make a covenant with God and then break it. It makes a very good and understandable statement…I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? (Job 31:1 KJV)…we are in covenant with God, we can not allow ourselves to look at the women of this world in a lustful way.

    Not only that, but Job declairs his innocence and his faithfulness to the covenant he has made with God…even in the midst of going through some of the curses of breaking covenant…he declairs he had not broken covenant… Job was faithful but for one moment had to suffer as though he was guilty…JUST AS JESUS HAD TO SUFFER UNJUSTLY…AS IF HE HAD BROKEN COVENANT, WHEN IN FACT JESUS WAS INNOCENT.

    Life is not always as it seems, is not always fair, BUT IF WE HOLD ON TO THE END, OUR REWARD WILL BE GREATER THAN OUR PAIN OF BEING FAITHFUL.

  5. Job 31:11 NLT

    For lust is a shameful sin,
    a crime that should be punished.
    1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, IS NOT of the father, but it is of the world.
    As one who matures in Christ, those lustful desires should stop. Why? Because you crucify those desires, Galatians 5:24 which are of the flesh. But that can only come, by getting into prayer, praying in the Holy Ghost, getting into the word of God, which cleanses you from the inside out. Remember the saying Junk in…Junk out! So be careful in what your watching (sight), hear, and speak. 1 Peter 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims ABSTAIN from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.
    Galatians 5:16 I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Be Holy for I AM HOLY.

  6. Job tells several sinarios where he could have done wrong, but he didn’t. Not helping the poor with clothes and not feeding the fatherless. Our church does both of those things. Our free garage sale clothes them and our milk and bread gives people food. PoFW we shall be blessed and not cursed!

  7. THE SOUL SEARCH

    5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;
    7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;
    9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;
    13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;
    16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;
    19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;
    21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
    24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
    25 If I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;
    29 If I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
    39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

    Job continues his desperate search for the source of affliction. We know and understand from the shadow of what has happened to Job that the source of affliction is a test from GOD to establish and prove HIS FAITH in GOD. However the darkness of the dilemma has Job on an unending search for the source.

    Wise are we at the first glimpse of trouble to diligently search our soul by the knowledge we have of GOD. As Job searches his soul we find that he often references the judgement along with the offense.

    Notice that once Job searched himself:

    40 … The words of Job are ended.

    Once we have sincerely, honestly and diligently searched our own soul with GOD there really is nothing else to say.

  8. This chapter illustrates integrity. Job reverenced and feared God (Jesus) and as such openly welcomed those with him to prove his guilt of wrong doing. One must strive for the same integrity as Job had in reverence and fear of God; “God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him”. One would also be wise to show reverence to the man of God; “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you”. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  9. This chapter shows the confidence of Job in how he knew he had been faithful in all things. Even though he seems to be searching for answers; he boldly states what should happen if he had sinned. Job knew he would rather face mans earthly consequences rather than the judgment of God.

    Verses 21-23 MSG “If I’ve ever used my strength and influence to take advantage of the unfortunate, Go ahead, break both my arms, cut off all my fingers! The fear of God has kept me from these things—how else could I ever face him?”

  10. God’s punishment is worst than what any man could give us. I don’t want to be the one that hinders anyone coming to God. God search my heart and create in me a clean heart renew in me a right spirit.

    Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

    Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

    “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28–30).

  11. Job was crying out to God. Many times in my walk I have done the same thing. I have asked why this, and haven’t I been doing this for You. Gods ways are above ours, therefore we must remember who is in control. God is the author of time itself. God knows what we are , who we are, and where we’re going.

    It seen to happen that when it rains it pours. God willl allow us to go through the fire, and if it seems more intense it is, because the finer the gold, the more fire it has to endure. Keep the faith , stay strong, and look to God for all the answers.

  12. In this scripture, Job was expressing how he could basically understand. That, if he had done some of these offenses. That essentally, he could understand experiencing what he has been experiencing. You can say, he was possibly soul searching, problem solving, justifying, or just trying to express his case.

    “Be Church”…iwork…igive…ipray…ireap…ireach…

  13. What have I done?

    Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

    Job goes on a soul searching journey. In his quest to try to understand what has gone wrong he is extremely honest with himself and to God cause he knows that He sees his ways counts all his steps. The integrity and honesty of Job is admirable. He pretty much mentions everything he could have done that was not righteous but has been faithful to doing the opposite. It reminds me that he was called a perfect and upright man be the Lord himself. It takes real godly men and women to be that honest to themselves and to God.

    Proverbs 20:6
    Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness:
    but a faithful man who can find?

    It is good to do soul searches in honesty and integrity…then wait upon the Lord for he has the last words.

  14. Wow, what insight.

    Do you think Job is doing an inventory of his mind? Is he trying to find what caused this punishment to fall upon him? Sounds like it to me.
    If I…
    Walked in vanity
    Hasted to deceit
    Step turned out of the way
    My heart walked after my eyes
    Blot cleaved to my hand
    Laid wait at my neighbors door
    Etc…
    Etc…

    Have we ever really considered how many sins we commit during day, week or month? Thank God for His grace. What if our repentance were to read like this chapter? Lord, forgive me for not thanking you for a good night’s sleep. Lord, forgive me for not thanking you for waking me up again this morning. Lord, forgive me for the ability to get out of bed, breathe, brush my teeth, etc…, etc…

    Thank you, Lord, for spilling your blood to cover all my sins. As long as I truly repent with an open heart for all the things I know I have done wrong and ask forgiveness for the things I didn’t even know were sins and finally and most important to me; keep my heart and spirit open during the day to the guidance and leading of His spirit, I believe I will have God’s favor.

  15. 35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

    The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous. -Proverbs 15:29

    Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake. -Daniel 9:17

    Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. -Daniel 10:12

    37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

    Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. -Hebrews 4:16

    The Lord hears our prayer and allows us to come into his presence.

  16. 28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

    It is easy for a person to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of this fast paced world, but we must stay ever vigilant to make sure that we continue to give God all the glory. If it were not for Him, where would you be right now???

  17. The price of spiritual adultery reaches farther than fathomable. Our hearts desire must be sold out to God. When you flirt with the world we begin a decay within us that slowly melts away our conscience, and hardens our heart.

    Pleasure numbs the senses as sin decomposes our inner man. This left unrepented turns our affections to the world, and away from our first love.

    The enemy wants us to have little affairs with him, and his system. Small seemingly minor winks to keep us invigorated.

    The chapter challenges me to look within and see if I am true to the one who is true to me.

  18. Fire will consume just about anything. The fire of the Lord will consume everything that is not holy. If you need to get rid of something, let the fire of the Lord take care of it.

  19. Jobs prayer is that he could repent of whatever he did wrong so that he could get back into the grace and blessings of God. That is how Pastor has taught us to repent…. Leave no margin of error and cover it all. Lord forgive me of all that I have done against you every word, thought, action, and attitude that may be against your nature. Lord I ask you to forgive me of even the things I have forgotten that I have done that is against you. Father I ask that you would cover me again this day with your precious blood of redemption. In Jrsus Name!!

  20. “Let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity.’

    Job is recounting in this chapter various times that he felt his integrity could have been challenge dand he felt he had passed the test. But reviewing those times before his friends again would once again help him to see if there was an disobedience, or reason that would cause for the affliction he was suffering.

    We find another instance in the bible when Belshazzar saw handwriting on the wall and Daniel had to interpret: 27 Tekel; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. His integrity was in question as well, and he was not in good standing after the weigh in.

    It would behoove each of us to daily weigh in with God so that we are not found in a “wanting” situation.

  21. Commitment

    Job 31:1, 6 KJV
    I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

    Job understood the seriousness of a covenant. When we make the decision to be born again of water and spirit we enter into a covenant with God. Each disciple needs to stay committed to the body of Chirst until they fulfill their purpose for the kingdom.

    “Either you decide to stay in the shallow end of the pool or you go out in the ocean.”

    Christopher Reeve (1952-2004)

    iGo into the deep

  22. Wait On The Lord

    For what has God above chosen for us? What is our inheritance from the Almighty on high? Isn’t it calamity for the wicked and misfortune for those who do evil? Doesn’t he see everything I do and every step I take? (Job 31:2-4 NLT)

    And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:9 KJV)

    One of the tactics of the enemy is that of shame. Some faint not because they run out of strength so much as they run out of hope. The enemy comes along and whispers in their ear “you already messed up too bad, you already made too many mistakes, you’re already crossed the line, there’s no hope for you, God is done with you and your promise is gone.” Yes, God is a righteous judge and judgement is coming, but there is yet mercy and grace, and an atonement for us…

    Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities. (Psalms 130:1-8 KJV)

    He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isaiah 40:29-31 KJV)

    When the devil whispers defeat, by faith we need to scream: Jesus says I overcome! He won the victory! The promise is coming! Hope is alive! My banner of victory is still crimson with His precious blood!

    Like Job, we may encounter seasons when we don’t know what to do or quite what to think but if we wait on the Lord, we can endure. When all other answers fail, there is yet a Name above all others that is our Answer.

    Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11 KJV)

  23. Offer Vulnerable Obedience
    Let me be weighed on honest scales, that God may know my integrity. Job 31:6
    One of the beautiful facets of the Book of Job is that it displays how a man can be very human, and yet very heavenly at the same time. Job feels all the emotions of a man who has endured great loss.He becomes angry,depressed, and anxious, and he declares his feelings openly. At the same time, he never drifts from his strong character; he remains consistent through everything.The moment it appears he will curse God and give up on Him, he affirms his promise to be faithful even when he doesnt understand what is happening .Job pledges to maintain his integrity despite his circumstances.

  24. Job has exhausted himself, passionately railing against life and God. Now he mast one last attempt at proving his innocence, this time by a logical appeal to the judge who has established the laws with which Job has faithfully complied all his life. By methodically arguing that he has not committed any of the offenses that would warrant punishment, Job hopes to clear his name. How grateful we can be that under the new covenant we approach God, not as condemned defendants or clever attorneys, but as His beloved children under His grace.

    Heb 8:
    8But God found fault with the people and saidb:
    “The time is coming, declares the Lord,
    when I will make a new covenant
    with the house of Israel
    and with the house of Judah.
    9It will not be like the covenant
    I made with their forefathers
    when I took them by the hand
    to lead them out of Egypt,
    because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,
    and I turned away from them,
    declares the Lord.
    10This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel
    after that time, declares the Lord.
    I will put my laws in their minds
    and write them on their hearts.
    I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.
    11No longer will a man teach his neighbor,
    or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
    because they will all know me,
    from the least of them to the greatest.
    12For I will forgive their wickedness
    and will remember their sins no more.”c
    13By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.
