Psalm 17

1 Hear the right, O Lord, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.

Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal.

Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.

Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.

I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.

Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.

Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,

From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.

10 They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.

11 They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth;

12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

13 Arise, O Lord, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword:

14 From men which are thy hand, O Lord, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

  1. psalm 17:4-6
Abba Father, thank You for your presence that goes with me. I fear nothing for You are with me . I have no need to look around me in terror and be dismayed , for You are my God . You strengthen and harden me to difficulties; yes, You will help; yes, You uphold me and retain me with Your victorious right hand of rightness and justice. Amen.

    Confidence

3 Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

David had total confidence In God. He had passed the test of loyalty. Some of the trials that come our ways, are just confidence builders.

  3. What a great prayer… I will resume it to a song we sang long ago:

This world is not my home I’m just passing through
my treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue
the angels beckon me from Heaven’s open door
and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore

Lord do not allow us to get comfortable in this world stir our hearts into nonconformity, allow us to know that everything is much better in Heaven than here. Keep us Lord, retain us on your path of righteousness. Give us shelter under you wings of love. I need you Lord, I need your healing Hands upon me today.

  4. Psalm 17:7-8 KJV

Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them. Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
Thankful to know that the Lord will hide me when the enemy comes against me!
“I am safe, I am safe, in your arms”.

  5. THE LORD MY KEEPER

4 Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.

The LORD provides the path of safety and protection, and much like driving an automobile, we can drive on the road that has been cut paved and angled for the safety of the traveler or we can attempt to make our own path by jumping off of the road and blazing our own trail doing our own thing and risk the unknown of the next hill. The greatest safety of the paved road is that someone has already been there and crossed over. Such is it with the WORD of GOD. HE has been there and done that already and HE has prepared the best path by the power of the words of HIS mouth.

    This principal is further explained:
Psalms 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Psalms 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

Stay the course of the WORD of GOD and HIS paths.

  6. 3 Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

David assures God in this scripture that He could visit him in the night and find him the same, consistence, constant. Many times our relationship with God is like a roller coaster when things are going good, we are “in it” but when the trying proving time comes, it is then that our countenance and actions show what we are really made of. Do we waiver? Does our actions speak louder than our words?

The way that we take should be consistent, regardless of what we are going through to be tried and proven.

Sometimes the “proving” of our heart is not easy for us. Job 23:10
says “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold”

  7. This chapter illustrates trust. David sought and trusted in God, and as all know today God provided. There are those that seek to do evil, which is why one must seek and trust God all the more as the end draweth nearer. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  8. 7 Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.

Here goes the right hand again. David didn’t know the name of Jesus yet but he knew where the power of salvation comes from. The right hand of God, the Power. The power to work in our lives, the bridge over troubled waters. This figurative language was meant for us to understand the power that is in God. He is a spirit that has no hands. We have to see it naturally sometimes to understand the spiritual. God only had hands when Jesus started forming in Mary’s womb. The only reason he had hands then was so that they could have nails driven through them at Calvary. The more I get in this word the more it reveals itself to me… The word was made flesh. Word doesn’t have body parts till then

  9. 7 Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.

He is my Comforter. God has protected me in many situations that could have otherwise ended up bad. He is the true Father that will protect His children, and the awesome thing is is that we are all His children.

  10. 7 Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.

8 Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,

I long to be the apple of Gods eye, I desire that HE would be pleased with me.

Daily I have put my trust in the Lord, He guides me and protects me from harm and those that would intend to cause harm. I hide under the shadow of His wings.

  11. Psalms 17:15
As for me, I will continue beholding Your face in righteousness (rightness, justice, and right standing with You); I shall be fully satisfied, when I awake [to find myself] beholding Your form [and having sweet communion with You].

The passions of the wicked are all aligned with the three evil attributes of the flesh. The world system caters to these in all of its pursuits.

    1 John 2:16
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Each of these are focused on pleasing the self.

The NKJV study bible says “The lust of the flesh refers to desires for sinful sensual pleasure. The lust of the eyes refers to covetousness or materialism. The pride of life refers to being proud about one’s position in this world.”

The antithesis to these is a life of focus on pleasing God.

    1. Having a desire to please God.

    1 Thessalonians 4:1
how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

Please – to strive to please to accommodate one’s self to the opinions desires and interests of others

    2. Selfless, and giving.

    Acts 20:35
I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Support – take up, help. Embrace

    3. Humility, and meekness

    1 Peter 5:5
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

    Humility – lowliness of mind

The wicked succeed in this life because they follow the system of the world. By “dying daily” we lay up treasures in heaven where moth and rust doth not corrupt!

The key is to live in such a way that people recognize Jesus in us.

    John 3:30
He must increase, but I must decrease.

  12. Psalm 17

As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness:
I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
A prayer of David that asks the Lord from deliverance from his enemies.  He knows he has walked in the path of the Lord.  Heartfelt says that his cry of supplication it’s not with feigned lips.  He says you have tried my heart.  He knew his walk with the Lord and his trust was where it should be.  I see a desire for growth, to be more like God.  He ends the chapter describing that he will be satisfied when he awakes in the Lord’s likeness.  Truly a desire of a man after God’s heart is to be more like Him.  Paul once persecutor of the church in my opinion became clearly a man after God’s heart.  To press to grow in the knowledge of Jesus.  He said he counted it all loss when he came to the knowledge of Jesus. It’s as if he discovered the greatest treasure there is, Jesus our Lord.  Whose prayers will the Lord answer?  The one who speaks with his heart.  David said that he would be satisfied when he awakes in the Lord’s likeness Paul said: press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
A constant growth is what we should seek after. Oh that we may know Him, and wait and see how He moves His right hand, God’s power, on behalf of His children when they call.

  13. As for me, because I am innocent I will see your face; when I awake you will reveal yourself to me. -Psalms 17:15

When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek. -Psalms 27:8

Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. -2 Timothy 4:8

Seeing the the Lord is directly related to living a life grounded in righteousness

  14. In this scripture, in vs. 15, is where we all would like to be. To awake in his likeness, to be more like Christ Jesus “Perfect”. This is the ultimate goal of every Christian or it should be. I must admit it’s going to be a long journey for me.

  15. Safety in the shadow

    Psalm 17:8 NLT

Guard me as you would guard your own eyes.
Hide me in the shadow of your wings.

    Psalm 91:1, 4-5, 8-11 NLT

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
nor the arrow that flies in the day. Just open your eyes,
and see how the wicked are punished. If you make the LORD your refuge,
    if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you;
no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.

  16. v15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness : I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

“Beloved, Now are we the sons of GOD, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” 1 John 3:1-2

After all that GOD has provided for us we should love, worship, and serve HIM and never take HIM for granted.
Those who love the LORD with all their heart and have been transformed by the HOLY GHOST have no trouble doing this.
    iPray
    iLove
    iAdore

iSeek to glorify GOD with all my soul, mind and spirit.
    iReap a glorious eternal reward.

  17. Grace

5 Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.

It’s easy to look at this passage and think “well that sounds like, if only it was that easy…” The thing about it that it’s not supposed to be grueling hard work to live for God. If its hard, it’s probably because we are trying to do it in our flesh and not by His grace; and if we’re doing it in our flesh, that means our flesh is still alive and will be waging constant battle against God. It’s like after God rescues us from a raging river, we just back in and try to swim upstream against a current we can never overcome, when the whole time God is standing on the shore saying “Why did you jump back in? I just finished drying you off, I was ready to carry you upstream where you could never get on your own, and all you had to do was let Me help you.”

It is absolutely a choice for us to live for God, but too often we Christians confuse the responsibility of the choice with the responsibility of the means to do so.

    Acts 1:8
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

That word “witnesses” is translated from “martys”, the word where we derive “martyr.” To be a martyr requires death, which means death to our flesh… “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, to be dead to your flesh…” Why is this important? Because of the Power, we can be dead…

    Romans 8:1-13
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

In the new birth, when we die to self, we experience resurrection not through the resurrection of *us* but through the resurrection of *Christ* in us. We’re in trouble if *we* resurrect because then we’re right back to walking after the flesh.

It’s about choice. We must *choose* to let Christ be alive in us and lead us. But what are we to do in our daily struggle to choose to stay dead to the flesh?

    Hebrews 4:14-16
14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

    Grace, grace is the answer.

    James 4:4-6
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

    Romans 5:19-21
19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

    2 Corinthians 12:9
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

The grace of God is greater than our weakness in the flesh, His grace is sufficient for us. If we choose grace and not flesh, we can do what we never could in the flesh and walk in His righteousness. His Spirit empowers the born-again believer to operate in grace over flesh because it is His life and once we choose grace it is not us but Him who “lives for God.” The benefit of living by His Spirit:

    Romans 8:14-17
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint- heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

    John 1:9-14
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

    Romans 5:1-5
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

    1 John 3:1-11
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. 11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

    Matthew 22:36-40
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

    iChoose Death to self
    iChoose Grace
    iChoose True Life
    iChoose Jesus

    NOW

    John 10:10
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

  18. There is tremendous beauty in the ammount of confidence a person places in him/herself when it comes to their relatioship with their creator and the straightness of that walk with Him. Knowing where, and who you are is important. David is using his confidence in the correct manner, by trying to attract God’s attention and favor upon his request for justice and relief from his enemy (Saul). In vs6 he says “Keep me as the apple of your eye, hide me in the shadow of you wings.” changing the attention to his need for God to protect him from harm, because the enemy of this world is rising against him. He stands on Gods word because he knows where he stands with God, and God will stand up of his servant. He knows that those that are of this world will never finds satisfaction in it, but that only the Lord can satisfy. Only those who are confident and trust God will be satisfied by seeing His face.

  19. Verses 6-7 CEV read “I pray to you, God, because you will help me. Listen and answer my prayer! Show your wonderful love. Your mighty arm protects those who run to you for safety from their enemies.” Before you go in any direction in any situation of life, PRAY! Make sure your running in the right direction!

  20. 3 Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.
4 Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.

We must be ever diligent with our words, they are more powerful than we acknowledge. With our words, we either find life or death, peace or choas, love or hate…
