Psalm 18

1 I will love thee, O Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.

In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth.

There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.

He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.

10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.

11 He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.

12 At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.

13 The Lord also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

14 Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them.

15 Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

16 He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters.

17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.

18 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the Lord was my stay.

19 He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

20 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

22 For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me.

23 I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity.

24 Therefore hath the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.

25 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright;

26 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.

27 For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks.

28 For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.

29 For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.

30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

31 For who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God?

32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.

33 He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.

34 He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

35 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.

36 Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip.

37 I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed.

38 I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet.

39 For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.

40 Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies; that I might destroy them that hate me.

41 They cried, but there was none to save them: even unto the Lord, but he answered them not.

42 Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind: I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets.

43 Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people; and thou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people whom I have not known shall serve me.

44 As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: the strangers shall submit themselves unto me.

45 The strangers shall fade away, and be afraid out of their close places.

46 The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

47 It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me.

48 He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.

49 Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.

50 Great deliverance giveth he to his king; and sheweth mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore.

  1. ILove to eat breakfast with Jesus

    The Lord is our strength and our fortress. He gives us the victory. But notice the psalmist is the one who speaks with authority. (Hope to write more at lunch)

  2. Watch out people God got my back!!!!!!

    What a testimony from a man that felt several times but still got right back up. Don’t be discourage in the mist of the battle CRY OUT TO THE LORD with a LOUD voice, He will hear your cry. Praise His Holy Name in the mist of your enemies. Let the ears of your enemies hear you Praise Him no matter what they do to you; it will make them crazy that they can’t get to you. Keep the words of this psalm in your lips and Praise His Holy Name for He is worthy to be Praised.

    46 The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

    47 It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me.

  3. COMPLETE IN HIM

    There are so many opportunities for comment here in Chapter 18. However what sticks out to me here is the opportunity to live our lives IN HIM not just for him.

    Living for him indicates that that our lives are lived for what is exchanged or for what we can receive in return. However when we live IN HIM this indicates that everything I do, every breath I take, every place I go, HE is with me, IN ME. Paul referred to this as “walk in the Spirit” in the New Testament.

    The MSG version clarifies the meaning of this verse and expresses the true sentiments of the psalmist:

    20-24 God made my life complete
    when I placed all the pieces before him.
    When I got my act together,
    he gave me a fresh start.
    Now I’m alert to God’s ways;
    I don’t take God for granted.
    Every day I review the ways he works;
    I try not to miss a trick.
    I feel put back together,
    and I’m watching my step.
    God rewrote the text of my life
    when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes.

    Paul stood at Mars Hill and declared:

    Acts 17:28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

    Also to the church in Colossae: Colossians 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

    For these reasons we declare HIS Glory and Praise HIS Holy name as stated in verse:

    49 Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.

    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork

  4. We can always count on God to be there for us. The Lord created everything and he can control everything. He will protect us and guide us if we will allow him to. We must yield to his will for our lives.

  5. 19 He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

    The voice of victory and deliverance is ringing through the words of David in this chapter.

    This verse reminds me of the message Pastor preached about the digging the wells. Up through this chapter David has been digging wells. Returning again to His God through repentance, making his way sure, purifying his actions and thoughts and in this chapter He comments that God brought him to a “large place” – the third well Pastor preached about meant “large place.”

    Many times we have to keep doing what we know to do, until God steps on the scene and brings the answers we are seaching for. Keep digging! God will deliver and bring us out.

  6. Psalm 18:24 MSG

    God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him. When I got my act together, he gave me a fresh start. Now I’m alert to God ‘s ways; I don’t take God for granted. Every day I review the ways he works; I try not to miss a trick. I feel put back together, and I’m watching my step. God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes.
    I’m thankful that the Lord has written out my life in His Book. There is now a different ending to my life. I hold on to His truth. Jeremiah 29:11

  7. Reward on the other side

    29 For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.

    It took courage and faith to run through a troop of warriors meant to kill him, but his wall of protection was on the other side of them. Once he got over the wall he was protected. The victory comes through our faithfulness.
    Reward is waiting on the other side of trouble.

    And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes: (Numbers 14:6 KJV)
    And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. (Numbers 14:7 KJV)
    If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. (Numbers 14:8 KJV)
    Only rebel not ye against the Lord , neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not. (Numbers 14:9 KJV)

    The promise land was on the other side of what looked impossible for most of the congregation, but Joshua and Caleb were already exited and determined by the reward that await on the other side.

  8. This chapter illustrates thankfulness. David gave praise to God (Jesus), for all that was done for him, as such he was blessed. One can be blessed as David was if one does not become full of self and remembers to praise God, for all he hath done; “Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people”. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  9. 2 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower!!!!!!

    GOD IS MY EVERYTHING!!!!

  10. 18-13 the lord also thundered in the heavens and the highest gave his voice hail .stones and coals of fire . What a wonderful and awesome God we serve he is all things glory to us are heiler protection are everything blessed be the name of the lord JESUS

  11. v46 The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock ; and let the GOD of my salvation be exalted.

    One should expect miracles, healings and deliverance as we lift HIM up with our true heartfelt praise and worship, this still pleases the LORD.

    iPray
    iPraise
    iWorship
    iLift HIM UP
    iReap the impossible .
    This still pleases GOD NOW!

  12. 27 For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks.

    28 For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.

    The Lord has rescued me and I always pray that I remain humble before His sight.

    He has surely been my candle in the coldest blackest nights of my life and led me out of the prisons of despair.

  13. 6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

    I’m so glad that when I cried before the Lord, he heard my plea. God will give an ear when his children call him for help.

  14. This chapter gives me confidence to know that God is always there to fight my battles. No matter if I on the mountain top or in the valley. If I am feeling strong or weak he is my strength.

    Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. -Romans 8:37
    For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, -Romans 8:38
    Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Romans 8:39

  15. 25 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright;

    26 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.

    This is amazing!

    Hidden within the verses of this inspiring chapter lies the key to relationship with God.

    How we choose to act toward others determines God’s response toward us!

    If we show mercy he shows mercy. If we are stingy then…

  16. Psalm 18:43-44 NLT

    You gave me victory over my accusers.
    You appointed me ruler over nations;
    people I don’t even know now serve me. As soon as they hear of me, they submit;
    foreign nations cringe before me.

    David is a man of authority. There is only one way to have authority and that is to be under authority.

    Psalm 18:20-23 NLT

    The LORD rewarded me for doing right;
    he restored me because of my innocence. For I have kept the ways of the LORD;
    I have not turned from my God to follow evil. I have followed all his regulations;
    I have never abandoned his decrees. I am blameless before God;
    I have kept myself from sin.

  17. 3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

    46 The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

    I can remember an old song that used these two verses.

    Buckler–look it up. It is a little shield held or worn on the forearm.

  18. Through The Darkness

    11 He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.

    When all seems dark, sometimes it is because God is trying to draw us near to reveal Himself to us in a new way. Our flesh wants to resist seasons of darkness, but there is great blessing found in allowing God to draw us near in ways we wouldn’t think to go on our own.

    Proverbs 3:5-6
    5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

    Walking by faith means trusting in God that it just might be Him and not the devil leading us to walk through dark places.

    Psalms 23:1-4
    1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

    I don’t believe it is accident that Psalm 23 jumps from “he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake” immediately into “yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…” The question is, will we trust God to walk through *all* paths of righteousness so He will be glorified, or will we only trust for some of them?

    David sets the stage:

    4 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

    5 The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.

    6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

    God’s way is perfect, and if we let Him, He makes our way perfect in conformity to His. He strengthens us and lets walk as “mountain goats” in place so high up and so seemingly impossible for anything to get a foothold. He enables us to walk His path, no matter how impossible it seems for us to do so.

    Isaiah 55:8-9
    8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

    His way is above ours, as well as His understanding is above ours. We walk by faith, not sight; by faith, not by our own perception and understanding. Faith allows grace to act, that He would allow us to walk His path way up nigh above our own:

    Hebrews 4:14-16
    14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

    Grace is our help, not in the sense of assistance so much as grace is what gets it done, period.

    35 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.

    36 Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip.

    It is not us but God alive in us that gets it done. It is a matter of faith if we will let God take us along the path through the darkness.

    Psalms 23:5-6
    5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

  19. 2 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

    3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

  20. Mighty God

    The vivid words David uses here are reminders of the kind of God we serve. He is rock solid in His faithfulness, unmoved by those who would do us harm. With His unconquerable strength; we will always find safe refuge in him. He is impenetrable in His shield-like protection, powerful in His ability to save and utterly reliable as a stronghold in times of trouble. No wonder David decided to use these images repeatedly in praise to the Almighty God. Without confidence and trust a relationship is doomed.. so believe and declare His goodnes with some Praise Fighting words! Great and greatly to be praised.

    Ps 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.

    Ps 37:39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.

    Ps 62:2 He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken ..6He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. 7My salvation and my honor depend on God;he is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your hearts to him,for God is our refuge.

    Ps 91:2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

    Ps 95:1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

    Ps 144:2 He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.

  21. Broaden My Path

    I can only imagine walking along a high, narrow ledge, picking my way through rocks and snags amist an escape from a dangerous enemy who is quickly catching up. Mostly because I’ve never been in David’s shoes, and I’m not much for the great outdoors. I do know that when the terrain of life becomes rocky, steep and narrow, the journey can become overwhelming. We are keenly aware of how easy it would be to turn an ankle, or stumble and slip to our deaths. Here David’s praise-filled proclamation of God’s sustaining presence can be an affirmation of faith for us in our daily lives. Next time we find ourselves precariously perched on a dangerous, narrow path in a situation or relationship, we can repeat this verse (36) aloud to th Lord. We can trust our Savior to broaden the path in front of us and keep our feet from slipping.

  22. Like Pastor said….there is so much to comment on in this chapter; but, these verses spoke to me:

    Verse 6 MSG “A hostile world! I call to God,
    I cry to God to help me.
    From his palace he hears my call;
    my cry brings me right into his presence—
    a private audience!

    Verses 20-24 MSG “God made my life complete
    when I placed all the pieces before him.
    When I got my act together,
    he gave me a fresh start.
    Now I’m alert to God’s ways;
    I don’t take God for granted.
    Every day I review the ways he works;
    I try not to miss a trick.
    I feel put back together,
    and I’m watching my step.
    God rewrote the text of my life
    when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes.”

    Verse 30 MSG “What a God! His road
    stretches straight and smooth.
    Every God-direction is road-tested.
    Everyone who runs toward him
    Makes it.”

  23. Psalm 18

    19 He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

    The whole psalm was great to me, but  this verse caught my attention.  I was instantly reminded of psalm 37:4
    “Delight thyself also in the Lord;
    and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”
    However, here it talks about how God delighted in David.  Makes me wonder how good was the character of David before the Lord…he went through trials and trouble but constantly the Lord was on his mind and heart, that’s what I can conclude.
    On verse 20 goes on saying:
    The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness;
    according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

    Actions speak louder than words.  David not only spoke it but lived it.  The Lord said if you love me keep my commandments.  In proverbs it tells that the Lord shall direct our path if we acknowledge Him in all our ways. Putting God first, asking shall we, shall we not. Knowing and living what He commanded.  That’s how David was able to please God. He held on to God Word and promises.

    Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed:
    but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.
    Proverbs  13:13

  24. 47 It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me.
    48 He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
    49 Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.

    I am continually blessed by the opertunities that have came about where I get to see God deliver His people from the hand of the enemy.
