Psalm 61

1 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.

From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.

I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.

For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.

Thou wilt prolong the king’s life: and his years as many generations.

He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him.

So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.

  1. vows to me are our obligations we make unto the Lord.
Whether it means loving our neighbors, loving our spouse or witnessing about Jesus.
These are our vows unto God.
Thank You Jesus for bringing me in this marvelous light.
I pray I keep all my Vows unto the King.

So will I sing unto thy name forever, that I may daily perform my vows.

Without praise, and vows I cant do nothing for my Jesus.

  2. HEAR MY cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed and fainting; lead me to the rock that is higher than I [yes, a rock that is too high for me]. For You have been a shelter and a refuge for me, a strong tower against the adversary. I will dwell in Your tabernacle forever; let me find refuge and trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! For You, O God, have heard my vows; You have given me the heritage of those who fear, revere, and honor Your name. May You prolong the [true] King’s life [adding days upon days], and may His years be to the last generation [of this world and the generations of the world to come]. May He sit enthroned forever before [the face of] God; O ordain that loving-kindness and faithfulness may watch over Him! So will I sing praise to Your name forever, paying my vows day by day. (Psalm 61:1-8 AMP)
Yes, I AM safe in your arms O Lord. Not only I but every generation that follows . So we shall sing praises unto you And declare your Glory in this Earth!!

  3. The people of the name

5 For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.

There is something great about the name of Jesus. The prophets of old desired to hear it. The heroes of the New Testament used it to heal, deliver, and help. Today we have his name over our lives through baptism.

What did it mean though to be given the heritage of those that fear that name? The psalmist did not have the glorious water baptism to put his name on their lives. So what did they have?

Webster defines the word name as
1a : a word or phrase that constitutes the distinctive designation of a person or thing
b : a word or symbol used in logic to designate an entity
2: a descriptive often disparaging epithet
    3a : reputation
    b : an illustrious record : fame
    c : a person or thing with a reputation
    4: family, clan
5: appearance as opposed to reality
6: one referred to by a name

The name reveals who the person is. The name of Jesus is associated with his character, attitude, and reputation.

Though we are covered by the name, we must actively pursue what it means to be the people of the name.

    Romans 13:14
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

It takes more than just going down in the glorious waters of baptism. We have a responsibility to rein in our carnal desires, and let his light shine forth.

    Galatians 3:27
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Wake up, brush your teeth, comb your hair, put on clothes, make a cup of coffee, open the word, and put on Christ! 🙂

  4. No matter how bad the situation we find ourselves in, God is always there for us to run to. He is our strength and protection.

  5. 1-2 God, listen to me shout,
bend an ear to my prayer.
    When I’m far from anywhere,
    down to my last gasp,
    I call out, “Guide me
    up High Rock Mountain!”

God is always going to hear our prayers. It does not matter if we cry out to him all at the same time or one at a time. He is always there my our side for us to give ourself to him.

  6. This chapter reveals that David may have been in distress over situations, yet he knew where to turn and what to do, cry out to the Lord. We have observed that David’s relatiionship with the Lord is a pattern for us to follow. We see him daily conversing about the situations surrounding his life. We find psalms written when in distress, psalms written in victories, psalms written in time of war, psalms written when he had sinned and repented, when he felt alone and when he knew God was right beside him. Daily, no matter what his state of mind was, he communicated with the Lord. He knew where to turn to be lifted up, he turned to the Rock that was higher than He was, who could see all and knew all, and was able to direct his steps.

  7. 1 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.

2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

3 For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.

What a well fitting verse for me Lord, for only You know my pain…

Prov. 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

You are my God, my Savior, my Teacher, my Father… You alone are my strength, my shield, in You alone do I live… You are the Mercy Seat, the Strong Tower, the Calm in the mist of my storm. You are my ALL.

  9. I would like to say thank you to Pastor Watts and everyone at POFW for allowing My family and myself to be A part of this great assembly of believers!
1 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.

2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

David realized, true life, he needed God with him at all times. He pleads with God (hear me) attend unto my prayer. He wants God to let him know my prayer has reached you.
When my heart is overwhelmed, my life is in so much chaos, Lead me.
We always need God to lead us to him ( the rock that is higher than I).
    PRAISE GOD

  10. THE ROCK, MY ROCK

2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

The bible says that TIME and CHANCE happen to us all. This verse is a gives very clear direction to us as believers in where to go and when to go there.

The season is eternity, the reason is an overwhelmed heart, the place is the ROCK, the result is safety.

The identification, realization and confession of an overwhelmed heart is the key to our safety, survival and prosperity. David identified the place he would run when his troubles became larger than his NOW faith.

We all are wise to have an escape route when our troubles overwhelm us.

David said “when” my heart is overwhelmed, indicating that it is going to be an opportunity we all face. Some respond in anger, some just weep, some just quit altogether, some seek an easier, less rewarding path.

We also find insight into the attitude of David in this season, he was coachable, teachable, he sought direction, he was not a hero, tough guy, know it all. He said “Lead ME”, we MUST be willing to be led to help!

Finally, the place, THE ROCK – Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

To sum up this verse: CRY OUT and GO TO THE ROCK and purpose in your heart to make THE ROCK = MY ROCK.

  11. 1 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
8 So will I sing praise unto thy name forever, that I may daily perform my vows.

God always answers prayers, and if he doesn’t its usually because he has something better in mind. I love God, I trust him with the things that I cant trust people with. He is my rock, my strength, he is where I turn when things are good and when things are bad. i
I will praise him until the end because he deserves to be praised and lifted up. he deserves to be glorified and exalted in everything that we do… sometimes we fail to realize how blessed we really are. praise him in the sun shine, praise him in the rain! Im happy to have a strong rock under my feet that i can always count on!!!! Thank You Jesus! Halelujah!!

  12. 3 For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.

God is a place of refuge. The world can’t understand the security we have in Him because they don’t know Him. There is no shelter in the world, just running from one trouble to the next, but God shelters those that trust in Him with their whole being, not just their words.

  13. 8 So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.

A new song o LORD. Give me a new song, that I may sing a new praise unto thee o LORD.

  14. This is a true testament to how humble David was. David understood the importance of staying under the anointing, and not going over the leaders head. He knew that no one should touch God’s anointed. Pray for those that curse you. Even if they try to kill you. There were a few times that David had the opprotunity to kill Saul, but he didn’t. When we stay submitted under our authority, even when they don’t do everything right, there are blessings that come with it.

  16. his chapter illustrates sanctuary. David portrays a thankful heart to God. The good Lord has always provided shelter to his children; “In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge”. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  17. 2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

The Lord, my fortress, my refuge, my Rock. From time to time there have situations that bring this feeling. A heart in the middle of a storm, overwhelmed, hurt, wounded…that is the most crucial point some one can be at. What will you do? Whose voice will you listen to? Everywhere you turn seems to be a storm and your faith seems to fail. Elijah experienced this when he ran to the escape in the cave from Jezebel. His heart failed him; his faith did not sustain him…but David shows us what to do in a situation where you can’t do anything, where you need a savior; he says cry out to the Lord. And the Lord, el Shadai, the almighty will set you up on a rock. Salvation will come. And you feet shall be established on a firm foundation. In the time of trouble instead of running away from God run to Him, the hope is salvation

  18. 3 For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong
    tower from the enemy.

God is our shelter in the time of trouble.

  19. The Lord is our shelter. It says several times in this scripture how God is our shelter. It says that he is a high tower. It says that we are under his wing. God IS our shelter. He is where we go to seek shelter from the storms of life and the storms of this world.

  20. 1 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.

2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

I am glad that when life gets overwhelming the is my rock my refuge and my strength.

    Great is our God

  21. 3 For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy

God is my strong tower that I can run to!!

Thank you Lord for being my shelter !!

  22. v1 Hear my cry,O GOD; attend unto my prayer.

Complete trust in GOD provides us with assurance. GOD wants us to view life with eyes of faith. GOD will provide for us.
HE will meet all of our needs love, peace, joy
    security and acceptance.

  23. 8 So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.

We must strive to daily walk with god, praising, worshipping, praying, reading His word, meditating, and listening to Him…

  24. Verse 8 NKJV reads “So I will sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may daily perform my vows.”

Same verse MSG “And I’ll be the poet who sings your glory—and live what I sing every day.”

Lord I pray to always sing your glory and that your praises be continually in my mouth. This life is a daily walk and we must daily keep our vows unto the Lord. Let your life sing every day about what the Lord has done for you.

  25. Above & Beneath

1 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.

2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

3 For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.

4 I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.

This Psalm describes God has a shelter above and foundation beneath.

    Zephaniah 3:17
The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

    Deuteronomy 33:27
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

Above and beneath, God is there. When the comfort zones and “constants” of life crumble away from beneath us, and when the “impossible” happens and the sky seems to fall from above and life caves in on us, God is still there above and beneath. He is a shelter when nothing else is, our light in the darkest night seasons.

    1 John 4:17-19
17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19 We love him, because he first loved us.

That word judgement refers not just to final judgement but in the Greek describes the time of *crisis.* God’s love cast out fear and perfects our love that we may have boldness in the day of crisis. Our human love is incomplete without God’s divine love. It’s only by Him that the completeness or perfection of love can operate in our lives. That is what casts out fear, and when we allow that love to encompass our lives fully, we can truly experience the peace of God above and beneath.

That means surrendering everything to God; every situation, care, hurt, scar, wound, infirmity, sorrow, burden… We need His love to overflow the deepest part of us, which comes only with our surrender. To experience the fullness of God above and beneath, we must surrender everything to Him.

It may seem daunting but it’s starts with just the decision and that first step of faith. Step by step we take ground, conquering the enemy territory within that God can redeem every part of us. It’s time to declare war against the enemy. The devil may seem at times to have the upper hand but in reality it’s God who’s got us surrounded above and beneath. The question is, will we surrender to Him? Will we let Jesus be Ruler in us? Will we take the plunge and get caught up in His overflow of love?

    Jeremiah 31:3
The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

    John 6:44
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him:and I will raise him up at the last day.

    Revelation 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

  26. 1 HEAR my cry , O God ; attend unto my prayer . 2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee , when my heart is overwhelmed lead me to the rock that isw higher than I . 3 For thou hast been a shelter for me , and a strong tower from the enemy .

  27. A Spiritual Heritage

Those who have loved and honored the Lord from generation to generation pave the way for countless others to find their way t the promised land. David’s herritage goes back from on generation to the next of those who feared and served God in the past and prepared the way for David to follow in their footsteps after a mighty God. Because we have the record of God’s awesome power and unwavering faithfulness to previous generations, we can be confident that everything he promised to those who came before us will be ours as well. God has called each and everyone of us to be distinctly his own. Consider Matt 20:12Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? 14Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. 15Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? 16So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.” We all have a godly heritage we can follow-those who have gone before us and have feared God’s name, whether family, writer, speaker, pastor, Bible character or friend.
