Psalm 137

1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.

If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.

O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.

Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

  1. If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill [with the harp]. Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth if I remember you not, if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy! (Psalm 137:5, 6 AMP)

  2. 3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

    The spirit of entertainment.

The enemy wants us to be their entertainment. They want to mock us, laugh at us. What they don’t know is that:

No matter what the weapon is
I want you to know that if
    I won’t doubt He’ll bring me out
    If I obey He’ll make a way
If I believe I will receive
    Everything He promised me
    (I win) I win

satan the blood of Jesus (is against you) is against you (you’re not welcome here, no no)
Satan the blood of Jesus (the blood of Jesus)is against you (oh, we lift our voice and sing)
satan the blood of (the blood of Jesus) Jesus is against you (Oh yes)
Give God (we’re gonna give God) the glory (oh, give Him the glory)
Give God, (we’re gonna give God) the glory (give Him the glory)
And He will give you, (said He will give you)
And He will give you (said He would give you)
And He will give you (I know He’ll give you) the victory

This are the songs I sing, never give satan any room to make you feel capture, or defeated; he is the defeated one by the Name of Jesus!!!!!!

    The Days of Captivity

1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

    Babylon 0894
    בָּבֶל Babel
    Proper Name Location baw-bel’
    from (01101)
from ; confusion; Babel (i.e. Babylon), including Babylonia and the Babylonian empire:–Babel, Babylon.
Babel or Babylon = “confusion (by mixing)”
Babel or Babylon, the ancient site and/or capital of Babylonia (modern Hillah) situated on the Euphrates

Sometimes we allow ourselves to fall into captivity through the decisions we make. This always brings confusion to the situation.

Babylon was the hub for “man-made” religion. God had to confuse the plans and minds of man in Babylon or man would have utterly destroyed himself.

When you’re in Babylon, don’t hang into confusion, but confuse your enemy with praise.

  4. 4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?
5 If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.
6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

No matter what happens to us we cannot forget our praise and our worship. That will bring us through from one victory to the next. Even when we are bound by sin and our own devices, praise will bring us through.

The world is looking for a way to duplicate our genuineness with our praise and our worship. They want us to come in with a holy anointing and open up for them so that they are blessed. They want us to teach them. It’s not a secret though, it genuine thankfulness, and the Holy Ghost. That’s how we are so anointed as we worship.

Never Roget what He is done for you. I must never forget what He is done for me.. Nobody knows like I know, what God is done for me , and in my life….

  5. 3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

Sometimes the enemy uses reverse psychology. He screams at us to sing, and dance in our strange situation. He mocks at us, and cries out who will save you now?

Yet deep inside he is petrified of praise! He knows if we sing the songs of Zion, and dance before The Lord out deliverer shall come!

The next time the enemy mockingly tells you to sing the songs of Zion tell him thank you, and praise til the chains fall off!

  6. Babylon is bondage, it’s self love, and it’s worldly. Babylon want the children of Jeruselem to sing and perverse the songs of God so that they loose their meaning.

The world is Egypt and the world is Babylon. They want us to sing our praise that belong to God to them. They want us to get wraped up in the things they are doing so that we loose sight of God and the things of God loose their meaning. Babylon twists the meanings of things Holy so there is a fear of Holiness.

Beware of Babylon. Keep holy things holy unto God.

  7. Three Questions For Christian Leaders
    Psalm 137: 1-6

Three great issues erupt from the lyrics of this psalm: the writer dreams, the writer cries, and the writer sings. No wonder the people wept—the jews had been exiled to Babylon. No wonder they sang –they could not forget Zion, the land of their birth. No wonder they dreamed–they hoped and prayed for the day of their return home.
Theses issues pose great questions for every leader:
What do you dream about? What would you do if you had no fear or failure?
What do you cry about? What burdens drive you to become passionate?
What do you sing about? What causes you to rejoice?

  8. 4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

…. The same way we sang it in our home lands..? Life’s situations and circumstances are constantly moving. Sometimes it seems like you’re in a totally different playing field but you’re in the same place you’ve always been. When going through trials we could feel this way.. ‘ how can we sing to the Lord when all this is going on!?’ easily.. God is the same he’s always been and if he brought you out before what makes us think he can’t do it again. When we are stuck in a hard situation and feel captive in our own lives we have to remember God brought us out! And he will do it again!! So sing for your victory, just because it’s not here yet doesn’t mean it’s not on its way! Sing a song to the Lord any time any place! Because he is worthy!

  9. Remember no matter where we are.. in a strange land.. in a strange situation. Remember the Lord is with us. Send up praise and confuse the enemy. Don’t let the storm confuse you. Remember what God has done and what he has promised. He is loyal and merciful.

  10. Psalm 137:1by the rivers of babilon there we sat down, yet we wept, when we remember Zion.
    “I am a free woman”‘thank you Jesus!
    — it does matter my situation, it does not anymore!!!! if I am thrown in the pit, I am free, my soul is free, free, free ……
Free to dance,’free to worship, free and inwill use any bad circumstance and I will turn it into PRAISE🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶♥
    ————–
God; let us not compromised with this world, let us not be conformed, let us not be seduce by what this world offers…
    — God let us give you ALL THE HONOR, let us give you honor FIRST THING, let us exalt your name and magnify you,FIRST.
—-I give glory, glory!!! I give you honor, honor🎶🎶🎶🎶
I give you the highest praise!!!!🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

  11. When we are deep in sin cry out to the Lord to deliver us…Abba Father!
I love you, Jesus. you are my alshedi.
My Savior that goes where we are and pulls us out.
I praise Your Holy Name! Look out! Jesus is comming!
Thank You Jesus for providing me the message to follow You Jesus.

Please God(Jesus), please forgive me for not recognizing what’s important to You.

  12. A song of praise should be a Disciple of The Pentecostals everyday lifestyle. We gotta praise in advance, praise in the present and rejoice in praise over the past that we have come through. It’s time to pick up the harp that has been hung on the willow tree, quit having a pity party for ourselves over our current situation, which sometimes we get our ownselves into the mess, and praise our way out. It’s time to rejoice with a daily song of the goodness and mercy of the Lord. When I think about Jesus, and what He’s done for me, I wanna sing, sing, sing, all night!!!

  13. DONT SIT DOWN

1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.
3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.
4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

The description of the situation here is evident that this is the result of bad decision, bad fortune or a time of testing. Whatever the cause they found themselves in the case of being bound to their current circumstance. Babylon is a type of the the world and it’s systems of idols, entertainment and pleasure. Babylon is the place where idolatry ruled.

The challenge in the Psalm is that the Children of the LORD found themselves at the rivers or gates to Babylon and they “SAT DOWN”. You cannot FIGHT or DEFEND your GOD or CALL sitting down. To sit down is a sign of retreat or rest. There is a time and a season to everything under the sun. The entrance of idolatry is NOT a good place or a good time to sit down.

Spiritual death is a digressive process; the opposite of Spiritual growth.

    1. They were around the entrance of idolatry. (Flee idolatry)
    2. They chose to SIT DOWN there. (Lot attempted this)
    3. They wept over where they allowed themselves to fall to (Repent or Pity)
    4. They chose pity and hung up/put down their weapons. The gifts and talents of GOD. (Bless the LORD at all TIMES)
    5. Then in the control of carnality the world sought them to use their gifts for entertainment and not Ministry. (Now the test of Betrayal)

I conclude DONT SIT DOWN and you wont stop playing and you wont be defeated. If you made some bad choices, GET BACK UP!

It matters not how well you can sing, play, teach or preach if we fail to please GOD through honoring, obeying and representing HIM in the purity of HIS holiness. Submitting ourselves to GOD, to those in authority over us and to one another.

    DO NOT SIT DOWN
DO NOT HANG UP YOUR HARP
DO NOT PLAY AND ENTEERTAIN THE WORLD

    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

    NOW

  14. This chapter illustrates remembrance. They remembered what once was. One would be wise to remember what one has (freedom, peace, happiness, safety, protection, health, substance, etc.) and thank God (Jesus), else it could also become a memory. What a mighty God we serve! May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  15. 2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

Have you forgotten the power of praise!!!? Wow thus 3 verses were just screaming to me..! They let themselves be consumed by their situation open their mind to deception and with whatever dignity they had left they used it the wrong way. They were being asked to sing a song from the land they were from. Perhaps they didn’t get the deeper message. They thought oh they just want to mock us, use us for entertainment. They forgot the true power of praise and they forgot to worship in spirit and in truth. We don’t know but perhaps if they would have has a right spirit of worship, those that were asking for a song maybe deep down in their soul the deep calling to deep was really “asking” for deliverance?? God inhabits the praises of His people. It doesn’t say He just dwells in Jerusalem. They acted as if God could me be everywhere. These I imagine we’re skilled anointed singers and musicians, at one point, true worshipers. Perhaps what the devil wanted to use as a mockery God would have used as a weapon of deliverance for done people, or a city, a nation. It is in your mentality, attitude and heart. They had already defeated themselves in their mind. They forgot how God had brought out before. You have no idea the power praise can have until you are faced to use your weapon from a true heart. Many times at work with complicated situation, in my mind “not really felling” like singing…but then snap our of it and say it to his face “devil you’re a liar” then praise sing even dance and he flees the mind, leaves people asking what are you dancing about, why are you soo happy. I just no, my life is not perfect, but my God is. Praise from a heart is contagious. It opens the door to deliverance to others. But you must first put it in your mind to obtain yours. Pick up your weapon, your voice, your instrument, your hands to clap, your feet to stomp, your legs and arms to dance. You have the right to shake the foundation with praise.
Paul and Silas were in captivity too, but the attitude was different. They saw they cell the guards, the chains, and said thank you Jesus for you are more than worthy and in their midnight hour started to pray and sing praises aloud that everyone heard..guess what happened??? All I say ALL of the cells were open!! Look at the power of praise!
Pick up your weapon oh children of God. Even in the midst of trails, tribulation and heart ache. It’s my turn to throw some punches with my praise!!!

  16. Don’t ever forget where God brought you from and out of.
Over the mountains and the sea
Your river runs with love for me
And I will open up my heart
And let the Healer set me free
I’m happy to be in the truth
And I will daily lift my hands
For I will always sing of
Of when Your love came down

    [Chorus:]
I could sing of Your love forever (x4)

    [Bridge:]
    Oh I feel like dancing
    It’s foolishness I know
But when the world has seen the light
    They will dance with joy
    Like they’re dancing now

I could sing of your love forever (5x)

This song came to my mind as I read this chapter over and over today.

  17. Don’t let the enemy decieve you onto thinking that your defeated, because you, me, or anyone is not defeated! We got the victory, so we need (and really should desire) to praise God!!!

  18. HALELUJAH!!! HALELUJAH!!! HALELUJAH!!!
    THANK YOU JESUS!!!
4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?
HOW??? WE JUST CAN’T FORGET TO PRAISE HIM EVEN THROUGH ROUGH CIRCUMSTANCES!!! HE IS STILL GOD ALL BY HIMSELF AND HE IS STILL WORTHY WHETHER WE FEEL LIKE IT OR NOT!!! JUST GO AHEAD AND PRAISE HIM!!! JESUS I PRAISE YOU!!! YOU ARE SO WORTHY!!! THERE IS NONE LIKE YOU DADDY!!! HALELUJAH!!!

  19. Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice! Victory comes when we praise. Sing unto the Lord for He is good!

  20. When the Israelites are taken from their homeland by the Babylonians, they are overcome with grief. Singing in praise to the God of Zion is second nature to the Hebrews (2Ch 30:21). But while they are in exile, the last thing they feel like doing is making music. Figuratively- and literally- the exiles hand their harps in the branches of the trees on their enemies land, too sad to even consider playing a tune about their promised land and their God. Instead of throwing out our -figurative- harps, we can play them -confuse the enemy- get in position for supernatural breakthroughs from the Lord. One example of this method is Paul and Silas in Acts 16: 25 “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.”

Their poignant sorrow pierces God’s heart, however, and moves him to compassion (Isa 51:3). Through the prophet the promise is given: “The ransomed of the Lord will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.” (Is 51:11) and “I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.” (Isa 65:19). We have this same promises: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Rev 21:4).

  21. 3For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.
4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

How depressed the people were in captivity. All joy was gone. The enemy knew they had no joy so to require a song of mirth was mockery. However, praise unto God is always correct. Like Bro Whitaker taught, we we must stir up the inner man & praise to survive. As long as we are sending up Judah-we win. Then let God arise and the enemy be scattered.

  22. People of Babylon, you will be destroyed. The people who pay you back for what you did to us will be happy. They will grab your babies and throw them against the rocks. (Psalms 137:8, 9 NCV)

Declare the future to your enemy

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. (Zechariah 4:6 KJV)

  23. 4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

No matter where we are we should sing praises unto God. In good times and bad times the Lord should be praised.

  24. Don’t hang your harp on the willow!

2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

I did a little bit of research on willows here and I kept running into sites that said several scholars actually believe the trees referred to in this verse are not willows but rather poplar trees, related to the willows. So I did a quick search on poplar trees.
    Some interesting info on poplars:

They are quick to grow but short lived
Have weak wood, branches easily break off during storms
    Shallow roots
    They are messy
    And subject to several ailments.

Reading just this brought the parable of the sower to my mind mathew 1-23. The seeds that landed on stony ground sprung up quickly but had shallow roots and didn’t last through storms. We need to have a deep root system in the word of God. If we need to have a place to hang our praise then let it be on a tree well rooted and can stand through the storms and tests of life. We need to be reminded of all the things God has brought us through already every time we try to hang up our praise because we are trying to hang our praise on a tree that has weathered storms in life and be encouraged.

Micah7:8 Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.

  25. 1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

Don’t stop praising! Blessing is coming, harvest is coming! There’s a tiredness that can overtake us right before the promise and breakthrough. Now is not the time to faint, don’t entertain weariness! Put off the spirit of heaviness and put on the garment of praise! Just keep dancing!

  26. 6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

We have to put God before the ourselves. His work has to take precedence over our lives.

  27. May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I fail to remember you, if I don’t make Jerusalem my greatest joy. (Psalms 137:6 NLT)

If I forget You Lord….that would be horrible, because you were always there for me,..it’s impossible to forget you. God I am so great full that You were in my life cause You helped me in many things…God I will never forget You and I will continue to have a relationship with you and spread the word n continue to praise You..

  28. When you least feel like making music is when you should get up and dance and let nothing get you down, shake off whatever is getting in the way of pleasing God. Dance, Dance, rejoice and sing praises to the Lord.

  29. Verse 1 MSG “Alongside Babylon’s rivers we sat on the banks; we cried and cried, remembering the good old days in Zion.” If we speak or see defeat; then we are already defeated. But, we must declare Psalm 96:1-2 MSG “Sing God a brand-new song! Earth and everyone in it, sing! Sing to God—worship God!” Victory is mine!

  30. 4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

Even in the midst of the wilderness, keep your head up singing praises to Him.. Oh the joy that comes from confusing the enemy

  31. v1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

Sometimes after we have done all we could
like Nehemiah after he fasted, prayed, he wept. GOD does not lose count of our tears.
Sometimes we just have to cry it out and pour our souls before the LORD. Trusting GOD with our future whether good or bad, is the ultimate expression of love to HIM.

    iPray
    iPraise
    Now

  32. Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again. (Psalms 140:10 KJV)

Pray for those that are against you and do good towards them regardless of how they treat you.

If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee. (Proverbs 25:21, 22 KJV)

  33. Then let me become silent……if!

6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

    “Now”………………….
