Proverbs 20

1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord.

11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.

13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good.

24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?

25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.

30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

  1. Deep Waters

5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

One of the many benefits of obtaining wisdom is the almost uncanny ability to discern what is going on in another person’s mind and heart. God alone can accurately judge a person’s deepest motives ( Pr 16:2; 20:27; 21:2), but the closer people get to seeing things from God’s perspective, the more likely they are to be persons of deep understanding. Those who lack wisdom not only can’t be discerning and prudent in relationships, but they also can’t be of much help to others either. Spiritual understanding, however can be used by God to draw another person’s thoughts and intentions to the surface- like water from a deep well. By helping others discover what is deep within, the spiritually discerning can provide a tremendous service to others, revealing hidden truths and pointing them in the right direction.

  2. * vs 5 “Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.”

  3. 22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

    Romans 12:17-19 KJV
    17. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
    18. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
    19. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

  4. HALELUJAH!!! HALELUJAH!!! HALELUJAH!!!
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.
YES LORD!!! YOU REIGN JESUS!!! DADDY I LOVE YOU!!! I PRAISE YOU AND I THANK YOU!!! FOR YOU ARE FAITHFUL AND JUST!!! WHY BOAST OF THIS AND THAT WHEN NOTHING WE DO CAN EVER REPAY THE MOST PRECIOUS GIFT THAT OUR GOD HAD GIVEN US!!! SALVATION!!! WHY NOT BOAST ABOUT JESUS!!! THE ALMIGHTY GOD!!! JESUS!!! THE ONE TRUE LIVING GOD!!! JESUS!!! ALPHA AND OMEGA!!! JESUS!!! WHY??? BECAUSE HE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN SAVE US!!!
HALELUJAH!!! GRACIAS PADRE!!! TE AMO REY PRECIOSO!!! HALELUJAH!!! =D

  5. Excuses, excuses, excuses

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing. (Proverbs 20:4 KJV)

People can find any reason to do or not do anything. Work is hard and you become uncomfortable sometimes when you do work. That doesn’t mean that you find a reason not to do it. It means you do it anyway.

The world has the example of the grasshopper and the ant. The grasshopper doesn’t work because its hard. Then he starves. The ant works all year and has plenty.

    The Bible says:
Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. (2 Thessalonians 3:12 KJV)

That means you have to work. Excuses are like dirty feet. Everyone has a pair, you just don’t need to share them. Instead, just go and do!

  6. 11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

We are all known by our doings. What are you doing? Are you being fair and just with all your dealings? What are you doing when no one is looking?

In our society today truth is becoming hard to find. Scandals from the local government to the leader of this nation scar the lines between what is right and wrong. Scars do not move the lines, they just make it harder for the next generation to identify and the ability to cross those lines become easier with each scar. In these tumultuous times we as the body of Christ need to stand tall and proclaim there is still good for this world! Shout it from the mountain top: Jesus is Lord!! He is the answer!!

  7. I love Jesus

    These words are very clear.
People who understand and people who don’t.

5 Counsel In the heart of man is like deep water; but the man of understanding will draw it out.

We always sometimes try to find ways to figure out our problems on our own. But most of the time we cant find it(deep water), but Jesus understands and He has all kinds of understanding for me.
Sometimes I ask my mother for understanding she’s a very good person to talk to (draws it out of deep water).
Thank you for godly counsel cause Jesus puts them in our life to be a strong Tower like Jesus to steer us back out of the deep waters (pit).
Thank You Jesus for protection from drowning in this life/world.

  8. Psalm 20:22 NLT
    DON’t say:
“I will get even for this wrong” wait
For THE LORD to handle the matter.
    —- the LORD knows best!!!!
He will handle it the best way, the more convinient way, but watch this, let us not grow bitterness and resentful feelings in our hearts.
The LORD will take care of the matter, now there are different matters and situations that lead us too seek for revenge.that word sound kinda strong to me, for exemplar: if a member in my family is making my life miserable, and she continues to try to put me down, and everything she against me is evil, I will seek for forgiveness and mercy, my Peter will be salvation!! Anyways, it’s a good verse, a good bible study.
THE JOY OF THE LORD IS MY STRENGHT!!!!!

  9. A FALSE BALANCE

Faithfulness is a major theme in the bible. In the parable of the sower the LORD blessed the “faithful servant”, he also shared the principal of salvation as “not to him run the swiftest, but he that endureth unto the end, the same shall be saved.

In the 4 verses highlighted above, there are several principals identified by Solomon. The first being to allow GOD to judge in a situation and trust him to judge for you, protect you and provide for you.

The word that pulled my attention is the word abomination. It is found 2 times in this chapter.

10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord.
23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good.

Abomination – 8441. {ebah, to-ay-baw´; properly, something disgusting (morally), i.e. (as noun) an abhorrence; especially idolatry or (concretely) an idol:—abominable (custom, thing), abomination.

DIVERS – (Heb. kilayim, “of two sorts”). The Jews were forbidden to bring together different kinds of materials, animals, or products, such as (1) weaving garments of two kinds of stuff, particularly of wool and linen; (2) sowing a field with mixed seed; (3) yoking an ox and an ass together; or (4) breeding together animals of different species,
We are wise to consider what disgusts GOD.

6 Lots of people claim to be loyal and loving,
but where on earth can you find one?
7 God-loyal people, living honest lives,
make it much easier for their children.
8-9 Leaders who know their business and care
keep a sharp eye out for the shoddy and cheap,
For who among us can be trusted
to be always diligent and honest?
10 Switching price tags and padding the expense account
are two things God hates. MSG

22 Don’t ever say, “I’ll get you for that!”
Wait for God; he’ll settle the score.
    23 God hates cheating in the marketplace;
    rigged scales are an outrage.
    24 The very steps we take come from God;
otherwise how would we know where we’re going?
    25 An impulsive vow is a trap;
later you’ll wish you could get out of it. MSG

The bottom line is this that GOD is disgusted by dishonesty. Let’s be careful that we do not take advantage of others. Business owners and peddlers alike must take caution in making deals. Honesty and integrity is what GOD recognizes and we are wise to follow through with the original and honest plan that GOD has given us to live and be BLESSED by. Overcharging people and not giving them the product promised “disgusts GOD”.

Let’s be careful to give this world JESUS in the purest form, from a sincere heart.

  10. . 6 Lots of people claim to be loyal and loving, but where on earth can you find one? 7 God-loyal people, living honest lives, make it much easier for their children. MSG

There are alot of people that say I have your back but when you walk away you have knifes sticking out your back. I want to be around those are loving and loyal and stick close to you. Someone that will be there when you need prayer, shoulder to cry on that is a loyal and loving friend.
What kind of friend/person are you?

19 Gossips can’t keep secrets, so never confide in blabbermouths. MSG
Have you ever thought you had a friend that you could confide in and then all of sudden ALL knows your business. I have a hard time trusting people cause once you have been hurt it takes time to build that trust back up. The only one and true friend that I have found I can fully trust is Jesus. I like the scripture Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain you: he shall never permit the righteous to be moved.

  11. I love to eat the Word

    OH Ye Pillow

13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

This scripture can both apply physically and spiritually. It’s obvious that those who love sleep fail to accomplish goals in daily life. There are reasons for this…there is simply not enough hours in the day to do what really needs to be done and another is those who love sleep, when they finally wake up, are “walking in their sleep” going about doing very little.

What about spiritual sleep? How does a persons spirit fall asleep?

When Jesus was on the Mount of Olives, he asked his disciples to pray. They prayed for awhile and then fell asleep. Jesus woke them 2 times telling them to “WATCH AND PRAY LEST YOU FALL INTO TEMPTATION” and on the 3rd the Word says, “Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. (Matthew 26:45 KJV).

Why did Jesus tell them to “sleep on” and then the very next verse tell them to rise?

Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. (Matthew 26:46 KJV)

BECAUSE THEY WOKE IN THE PHYSICAL BUT REMAINED ASLEEP IN THE SPIRIT!

Jesus told them to watch and pray SO THEY WOULD NOT ENTER TEMPTATION. We know they entered temptation and fled from Jesus in His greatest time. The disciples would remain spiritually asleep until the day Jesus opens their eyes once again.

And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. (Luke 24:13 KJV)

On this road to Emmaus, the Word says “And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. (Luke 24:13, 31 KJV).

THEIR EYES WERE OPENED!!! The sluggards finally WOKE UP.

***We might be disciples of Jesus, we might be filled with the Holy Ghost, we might be baptized in Jesus Name…BUT ARE WE ASLEEP?

What are the signs of being spiritually asleep?

*Not being able to pray for at least an hour.
*Not wanting to read the Bible (and for our church family, not wanting to comment on the POFW blog).
    *Temptation seems hard to avoid.
    *Easily angered
*A lack of submission to the man of God
*Wanting to hold on to Mr. Pillow all day

These are just a few signs of being spiritually asleep.

Being asleep doesn’t mean you’re going to hell, it just means you are in danger of being attacked by wild beasts!!! (The devil).

But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:13-16 KJV)

  12. This chapter illustrates observant. Attentiveness will preserve and lead to success. One must be focused on what saith the Word of God, as well as what saith the man of God; “The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them”. What a mighty God we serve! May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  13. 4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

A lacy person will always have an excuse not to do work. It is sad that in today’s society young, strong, able bodies sit around collecting government benefits and have no motivation to serve. I believe that there should be a clause of accountability, if they are receiving any kind of help they should be serving the community in one way or another. They can volunteer, go to school to better themselves, or at minimal be accountable for their time. This is my opinion and it does not reflect anyone else. Every work we do should be done to Christ and for His glory. I don’t believe there is any glory on being lacy.

  14. 28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

Hallelujah for a merciful king!! If it wasn’t for his mercy odd be so lost

  15. 28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

Hallelujah for a merciful king!! If it wasn’t for his mercy odd be so lost everyday I need his mercy, somedays more than others but his grace is sufficient. Thank you Jesus for you’re new mercy every day.

  16. Integrity.

The character of a man is revealed by his actions when he knows no one else will know.

God sees all and knows our heart.

Walk in integrity and please God; my life is not my own. Romans 12:1

  17. Don’t ever say, “I’ll get you for that!” Wait for God; he’ll settle the score. (Proverbs 20:22 MSG)
Growing up as a young teenaged girl, taking matters into my own hands after school was the thing for me to do. My nickname in high school was ‘Tyson’…. Omg, I’m confessing here. Either way as I said I took matters into my own hands. If some of those people would see me now, I’m sure some would be in disbelief. Now I believe the word of God, live His word, and Obey when He tells me this..

Don’t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody. Don’t insist on getting even; that’s not for you to do. “I’ll do the judging,” says God. “I’ll take care of it.” (Romans 12:17-19 MSG)

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. (Romans 12:19 KJV)
Yes, I’ll let The Lord take care of me, my part is to fight my battles on my knees. My hands are NOW used for lifting them up as I praise and Worship my GOD!!! My name is no longer ‘Michelle Tyson’ Glory to God. I’ve taken on a new name…. Jesus Christ which lives inside of me!!

  18. Glory, Beauty, and Cleansing

29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head. 30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

As I was reading this I had thought how true this was. Young men are always trying to see whos the strongest. Is it the one that works out, the one that plays football, the one that lives on a ranch ,or the one that sits at home? A building is built on the backs of young men.

I have heard in the past of someone calling an elder beautiful, due to that they had a head of grey hair. When you see grey hair it usually means that person has lived a long life, therefore grey hair is a sign of wisdom.

Now the blueness of a wound. Why is it when we see a bruse we say,
” What happpened to you….” The opposite of evil is good, therefore when we see someone with “blueness” there is a level of compassion that is conected to it and not evil. This is why I believe that the blueness of a wound will turn away evil.

  19. Riotous Children

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right .
    Proverbs 20:11

There are certain children that we do not want to let into our house, knowing something will be broken, the cat tormented, or some new transgression taught to our children. these are not really bad children, just poorly raised ones. No one has taught them the basic rules of acceptable behavior .Some of them we can work with gently –not taking the place of their parents but civilizing them a little throughlove.
Others we will have to banish until they come to their senses or Your love reaches their little hearts. Father, I pray for these riotous children who need Your love and instruction so much. Show us how we can help them in some small way without taking over their parents’ duties or heaping blame on anyone.

  20. v9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

When we recognize our sin and its resulting cost we understand just how undeservered is HIS gift of salvation . HE paid the debt we could not pay HE suffered what HE did not deserve and loved when we did not love in return.
OLNY GOD CAN FORGIVE SINS! And has the power beyond death and the grave.

There is power in the name of JESUS and there is salvation in no other!
    Acts 4:12

Thank GOD for HIS precious BLOOD!

  21. The tiny feet behind

7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

Children are blessed because of the walk of their father. Walking in integrity is a daily commitment. Faithfulness is not witnessed in one night, but over several years. So when children view faithfulness, and integrity it is because of watching actions more than listening to what is said.

Tiny feet watch thier parents, and learn which steps to take. The Bible says that we are to talk about The Lord everyday throughout the day.

    Deuteronomy 6:7-10
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

The scripture spoken will be affirmed in their lives through watching their parent’s footsteps. Then it can be said of them….

    Isaiah 52:7
    7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace;
    that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation;
that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

  22. 9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

No one! It’s only by his mercy and grace that we are given the opportunity to hear his word and receive the knowledge that we are lost and undone without him. When we realize we’re lost it’s still his mercy and grace that gives us the chance to repent. I thank God that he loved me even before I knew him and that He cleansed and made me whole.

  23. 20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness

It important that we don’t forget to respect or parents. The principle begins in the home but extends into every aspect of life.

Those that rebel against God’s divine order will always find themselves in obscure places.

  24. 4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Many times I have procrastinated for various reasons, but as we see in this verse, when we turn down work because we don’t feel like it, is not a wise choice for us…

  25. Character and integrity are traits that are important to God otherwise He would not have elaborated on them in this chapter. As Christian’s, representing the Lord, our character and integrity must be impeccable. We must walk the walk, and talk the talk. Be who we and what we are at all times.

28 Love and truth form a good leader; sound leadership is founded on loving integrity.

  26. 6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

A lot of the bible talks about faithfulness. Enduring till the end it says. Faithfulness is a God-like quality that says a lot about who we are. Can we be trusted? Will we be good stewards of what God has placed in our hands? The Word says that God does not change. He is constant, faithful. He is the same, yesterday, today and forever. We must all strive to attain this quality that we may be always be faithful to Him at all times.

  27. Redeeming The Time

What are we doing with what’s in our hands? We are given opportunities every day to be stewards over situations, money, time, etc. God knows our ability and He knows our maturity, but just as even a child’s stewardship is judged, so do we have opportunity to jump in and work at it even when we don’t feel perfect. Our stewardship starts with choices *today*, not 10 years down the road; our efforts to strive for good stewardship can have humble beginnings but above that they should in fact have beginnings. We all have to begin somewhere so we might as well try to jump in with the best we have to give.

    Ephesians 5:15-16
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

  28. Verse 24 NLT “The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?” Instead of questioning the “why not’s” and the “how come’s”; let us put our trust in our creator who decides all things.

Verse 30 AMP “Blows that wound cleanse away evil, and strokes [for correction] reach to the innermost parts.”

  29. Wow…there are many jewels here in this scripture. You can see the importance to having a Pastor in your life. To give counsel and draw it out of your heart “Rough Waters”.
    _______________________________________________________

5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Alright kids, you’re going to be blessed. I’m trying to keep integrity, and it’s not easy. But, for with God nothing is impossible…….

Thank God, for the new covenant, and that it is Jesus Christ Blood that cleanses us from all sin. We are the fishermen, and he cleans the fish. Not done of our own power, but by our Lord Jesus Christ. “Saved by Grace, unless any man should boast.” “Not bound by the law, but under Grace.”

9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

I want these kind of lips………….

15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.
    _______________________________________________________
We definately need God’s mercy and truth, and grace…………

28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

There’s beauty in my old head….if I would just let my grey show….

29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.

  30. Blessings

4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Do not worry about those who seem to slide on through life without a care. Take the time to study, to pray, to fast. By doing these things The Lord will see your hard work and through the harvest blessings will be poured out and the idle ones who slid by will beg for what you’ve earned. It will never be easy, the load will never be light. Nothin in life ever is just handed to you, you must work in order to eat- physically and spiritually.

I pray that POFW will always have a burden to pray, fast and study to receive the wonderful blessings of God

  31. 12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.

Keep guard of those little eyes and your hearing. It matters that we stay away from what may affect our walk with God. It’s the sense of reality that kicks in when we fight the flesh and worldlly ways. God is watching our every move, we can’t hide from God. I want to please you Lord. I’m examinig myself first because I want to be an example and shine for you Lord.

  32. 7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

To all the fathers, we have a work to do and a duty to uphold. This is how we bless our children, simply by doing what is right. When we follow after the commandments of God and obey them with a sincere heart, God will not only bless you, he will extend the blessings to those after you as well.

  33. What this chapter is illustrating towards me is that each verse is speaking of either a warning like…”if you do this…such and such will happen”…and also telling us of good things and blessed things we should be great full for such as eyes to see and ears to hear and letting us know being wise is better than any jewels. So this chapter can help in many different ways…it’s not just focused on one area.
