Ecclesiastes 2

1 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.

I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?

I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.

I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:

I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:

I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:

I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:

I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.

11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.

13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.

14 The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.

15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.

16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

18 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

19 And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

20 Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.

21 For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.

22 For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?

23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.

24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

25 For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?

26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

  1. Work~ ~
    Travial and sorrow?
    Or joy?
    Earthly Work~
I know that work is hard work. We can brag to people “I did such n such so I need u to do such n such for me.” But what we, I need to realize is that we get joy from doing work God sees us and I shouldnt complain. Or brag and say all the things that I’ve done for that person or to anyone else.

    Heavenly Work~
I am glad that God asks us to be the best workers we can do for Him and the Kingdom of God.
We,I also shouldn’t brag to God or anyone else what we do for God. I’ve caught myself doing that and I was wrong.
God knows and He loves us very much. Early in this chptr I felt that there might have been a little bit of bragging….I’ve done this or I’ve done that. But the end result we get wisdom knowledge and joy.I will work to get those anyday! and the best thing it comes from the Lord. Halleluia!!

    No more complaining here.
This is how I percieved this chptr. and all this I needed to know about what life is all about. Thank you Jesus.

    Revelation 22:2~
In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yeilded her fruit, every month: and the leaven of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Even fruit WORK and now there’s healing power!
    Thank you Jesus.
    Love Your Work!

  2. No matter what we do, it is all in vain if it is not done to the glory of God. Our life should be lived to his glory.

  3. 13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.

I pray that I will always have the wisdom to know that folly can lead me to darkness.
A moment of weakness can cause a life time of regrets!

  4. BE GOOD

26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

There are certain things in life that the good and bad share together. Such as The Preacher identifies here in Chapter 2:

    MSG
15-16 When I realized that my fate’s the same as the fool’s, I had to ask myself, “So why bother being wise?” It’s all smoke, nothing but smoke. The smart and the stupid both disappear out of sight. In a day or two they’re both forgotten. Yes, both the smart and the stupid die, and that’s it.

Everyone will share the grave and all we do and have will eventually be forgotten in earth, bit never forgotten in heaven.

The FAVOR of GOD is on the good while trouble follows the bad. This does not mean that bad things will not come to good people, it means that in the end when it really matters, GOD will judge our lives and BLESS the GOOD and judge the bad. Our lives will be weighed in HIS balance and if we live GOOD for GOD we will find that he gave us wisdom, joy, and knowledge whiles others are working themselves through toil and trouble and end up with nothing.

    MSG
24-26 The best you can do with your life is have a good time and get by the best you can. The way I see it, that’s it—divine fate. Whether we feast or fast, it’s up to God. God may give wisdom and knowledge and joy to his favorites, but sinners are assigned a life of hard labor, and end up turning their wages over to God’s favorites. Nothing but smoke—and spitting into the wind.

    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  5. This chapter illustrates time. Gain or loss is irrelevant, whereas what is done with one’s time is significant. All are given a life-time, as such what one (I) accomplishes (Now) for God (Jesus) is all that really matters; “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” What a mighty God we serve! May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  6. ILove to eat the Word

    “Wanta Get Rich?”

Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

This little proverb is funny but so true. No matter how hard you work to build up riches, one day you’re gonna die and whoever gets your money might be a fool…

And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? (Matthew 16:26 NLT)

The things that really count in life is not material, carnal, or visible, but it is a relationship with Jesus and reaching the lost.

Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. (Proverbs 23:4, 5 KJV)

  7. Verse 11 MSG “Then I took a good look at everything I’d done, looked at all the sweat and hard work. But when I looked, I saw nothing but smoke. Smoke and spitting into the wind. There was nothing to any of it. Nothing.”

The Lord is so good….as I am studying for Sunday, we are talking about Solomon and how he prayed wisely. A comment in our book says “The worth of a man is not in the equity of his sweat but in the value of his soul.” Our lesson shows how we have to make our prayers count. We can’t pray for selfish things; but instead ask for God’s will and that He give us the ability to use His gifts wisely. As in Solomon’s case, God rewarded him with loads of earthly benefits because he made his prayer count. We too must make our prayers count!

  8. Ecclesiastes’ is not an easy book. The name ‘Ecclesiastes’ is itself a hard one.

25 For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I? I think this verse explains or is talking about is a man with God or without him? No real joy or no lasting pleasure can ever exist without God.

26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

  9. I…..I…..I……

After much thought, I decided to cheer myself with wine. And while still seeking wisdom, I clutched at foolishness. In this way, I tried to experience the only happiness most people find during their brief life in this world. I also tried to find meaning by building huge homes for myself and by planting beautiful vineyards. I made gardens and parks, filling them with all kinds of fruit trees. I built reservoirs to collect the water to irrigate my many flourishing groves. I bought slaves, both men and women, and others were born into my household. I also owned large herds and flocks, more than any of the kings who had lived in Jerusalem before me. I collected great sums of silver and gold, the treasure of many kings and provinces. I hired wonderful singers, both men and women, and had many beautiful concubines. I had everything a man could desire! So I became greater than all who had lived in Jerusalem before me, and my wisdom never failed me. Anything I wanted, I would take. I denied myself no pleasure. I even found great pleasure in hard work, a reward for all my labors. (Ecclesiastes 2:3-10 NLT)

Solomon A man of great Wisdom. Used what The Lord had given him to ‘temporarily’ see what can bring satisfaction.
At one point in our lives (BC) we all attempted the same desires. ‘ The riches of this world’.
As life went on…. Still a deep void within.
As Solomon spoke in the beginning of the third verse, I. That simple letter that to me was look what ‘ I ‘ did. Perhaps it may not sound like that to you. But as for me, as his quest in looking to what may bring fulfillment to ones self, Solomon sounds as if he is exalting himself instead of God. ‘ I’ will never bring J.O.Y.
    J- Jesus First
    O- Others Second
    Y- Yourself Last
As the word of GOD teaches us,
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? (Mark 8:36 KJV)
The Wisdom that The Lord has given unto each one of us, lets use it to Exalt GOD, for His Kingdom, for His Glory, and to reach this City!!!

  10. 2:11 then I looked at all the work that my hands had wrought ,and on the labour that I had labored to do,and be hold:all it was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
    ——–
(NLT )but as I looked at everything
I had worked so hard to accomplish,it
Was all so meaningless – like chasing the wind.
    There was nothing really anywhere.
    ——-
(MSG) then I took a look at everything I had done, looked at all the sweat and hard work.
    -But when I looked
I saw nothin but smoke, smoke and spitting
    Into the wind.
-there was nothing to any of it.
    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Ok, I have several points here, could it be that the writer had everything but one thing was lacking? ➡Maybe a RELATION SHIP with MIGHTY GOD?
—-maybe he was soooo busy with everything else and not too busy with GOD?
He expresses that after all the work, there was nothing really accomplished…..
—— the word of GOD says:
Mathew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit
    For theirs is the
    Kingdom of heaven .
3 John 1:2 Dear friend, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in
Good health just as it is well with your soul.
    ///////////
He was a rich man, ok so I think he was also
So rich in spirit(PRIDE) I ca. Do it all, I have it All…. And the word says that we néed to be poor in the spirit( humble) to admit we need GOD and without him we are lost.
Something else he also talks about :

2:10 and whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all of my labour.
    ——-
This is clear, this was his portion ……….
RELATION SHIP WITH GOD, is what is all about, at the end nothing is gonna matter, the poor, the rich, we all gonna die, and we all gonna go somewhere ( heaven or hell)
—he was a rich man, but he needed to be poor in spirit, then he was going to have satisfaction in his soul with everything he had accomplished ……..in life.healthy, successful life, healthy successful spirit….
I hope you understand my point, anyways…
    GOD bless…..

  11. Ecclesiastes 2:25 NLT
For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him?

    Matthew 10:39 MSG
If your first concern is to look after yourself, you’ll never find yourself. But if you forget about yourself and look to me, you’ll find both yourself and me.

The Preacher is right. Everything done on earth to please self is meaningless, and vanity. Rich, or poor, free, or bound, wise or foolish, the only thing that matters is a life lived for Jesus!

    He gave us
    Purpose: the great commission
Meaning: we are children of God
    Future: Heirs of the promise
Value: his blood paid the price

Without Christ we can do nothing. I’ll add, and we are nothing. Thanks be to God that through him we can do anything, and become like him.

    Ephesians 4:13
Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

  12. Ecclesiasres 2:24-25 The heart of Ecclesiastes, a theme repeated thru many verses. Only in God does life have meaning and true pleasure. Without Him nothing satisfies , but with Him we find satisfaction and enjoyment . True pleasure comes only when we acknowledge and revere God.
12-13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter : Fear God, and keep his commandments : for this is the whole duty of man.

  13. HOPE

That’s when I called it quits, gave up on anything that could be hoped for on this earth. What’s the point of working your fingers to the bone if you hand over what you worked for to someone who never lifted a finger for it? Smoke, that’s what it is. A bad business from start to finish. So what do you get from a life of hard labor? Pain and grief from dawn to dusk. Never a decent night’s rest. Nothing but smoke. (Ecclesiastes 2:20-23 MSG)

    Hope –
    1. To wish for something with expectation of its fulfillment.
    2. Archaic To have confidence; trust.

Build your confidence on things that will not fade away. Our souls destination is HEAVEN. We are just passing through…….. Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. (1 John 2:15-17 NLT)

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life. (1 Timothy 6:17-19 NLT)

“Don’t store treasures for yourselves here on earth where moths and rust will destroy them and thieves can break in and steal them. But store your treasures in heaven where they cannot be destroyed by moths or rust and where thieves cannot break in and steal them. Your heart will be where your treasure is. “No one can serve two masters. The person will hate one master and love the other, or will follow one master and refuse to follow the other. You cannot serve both God and worldly riches. Seek first God’s kingdom and what God wants. Then all your other needs will be met as well. (Matthew 6:19-21, 24, 33 NCV)

  14. 17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

18 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

Why spend our lives trying to accomplish something for ourselves or for the world. We should be saving souls for God. We’re not going to take our business, our houses, or our status to heaven, but the souls.. What a blessing it would be to see our friends and family worshipping the King!! Everything else is vanity… Everything else we could try to accomplish would only be pleasing to us and not God.

  15. HALELUJAH!!! HALELUJAH!!! HALELUJAH!!!
26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
    THANK YOU DADDY!!!
    JESUS YOU ARE GREAT!!!
TRAVAIL I DID IN THE WORLD!!! BUT EVEN FOR THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES (MERCY) I GIVE GOD THANKS!!! IF IT WASN’T FOR ALL OF THE SITUATIONS …… I WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO REALIZE SUCH HORRIBLE MISTAKES I WAS MAKING AND ALSO LEADING MY CHILDREN DOWN THE SAME PATH!!! I DO THANK YOU JESUS!!! HALELUJAH!!! WHEN THE SCALES FELL FROM MY EYES!!! WHEN THE CHAINS BROKE!!! OOOOO MY JESUS!!! THERE ARE NO WORDS!!! CAUSE YOU DON’T KNOW LIKE I KNOW WHAT THE LORDS DONE FOR ME!!! HALELUJAH!!! GRACIAS BENDITO REY!!!

  16. 24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

I have said in the past. You make your work what it is. You can make it joyful or stressful. If a man does not work should he eat? When a man works , it is the fruit of his labour that he eats. What is the fruit if laziness ? Death.

  17. NLT 1 I said to myself, “Come on, let’s try pleasure. Let’s look for the ‘good things’ in life.” But I found that this, too, was meaningless.

All these verses, tells me, even though you have everything in life such as money, materials, and good health, you still wont be happy. You need to have joy in your life. Your family, your salvation and relationship with God brings joy into your life.

  18. If we please God, he will make us wise, understanding, and happy. But if we sin, God will make us struggle for a living, then he will give all we own to someone who pleases him. This makes no more sense than chasing the wind. (Ecclesiastes 2:26 CEVUK00)

When we do what wants and needs he will and wants to give us wisdom and a understanding to things.
When sin is present no thing in our life will go right there will always be problems.

  19. 10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

How true-we can build us a kingdom only to let it be ibherited by a

    • Oops…inherited by a foolish child. But, if we build God’s kingdom, we have eternal riches that are forever.

  20. There were alot of “I”s in this chapter, but Solomon discovered after all he had acquired, purchased, build, developed, all was vanity and vexation of his spirit. Materialistic things in this life do not bring happiness. Oh they may appease for the moment, but the words to an old song ring in my ears, “Only Jesus Can Satisfy Your Soul.”

  21. vs.18-23 You can’t take it with with you.

We cannot take nothing to heaven except souls. Our labor for GOD will not be in vain.
HE will invite us to enter into the joy of the LORD, and HE will not forget what we have done for HIS cause. HE deserves our very best.

  22. Remembrance

16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

Our personal legacy is limited but we can choose to live in such a way that our life gives remembrance to the name of Christ long past peoples’ memory of our identity. Our lives can cast a silhouette of Christ upon the canvas of creation so that when we are gone and our memory decayed, all that’s left is Jesus and He is magnified all the more.

    Colossians 3:3
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

We don’t have to wait until we’re gone; today is the day in which we must die to self and let Christ live in us. Our remembrance can begin to fade even now and the memorial of Jesus is raised up in our lives.

    John 3:30
He must increase, but I must decrease.

  23. 13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.

What resounds to me from this chapter is the way one lives his life. Everything he tried, but in the end everything was vanity. Every work, or treasure he acquired in the for of riches was vanity. Seemed to find himself undatisfied, something was messing. Worked and did not withheld good things, all he wanted from the labor of his work but even that is vanity. He found that real treasure is not in possessions or riches or the more things you indulge in, but rather in wisdom. In the end time and opprtunity happens to everyone and death is inevitable and soon the fool and the wise, the poor and the rich will all be forgotten… But what really matters then? The way you live. Wisdom excelleth folly. What does a wise person do? The bible says that he who wineth souls is wise. God is the one who gives Love, peace and joy. There’s nothing that will take from this material world but we can make riches in heaven by living a life that pleased the Lord. That is not vanity.
    The word says:
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Col 3:17

  24. It’s clear that satisfaction can satisfy for the moment depending on the situation. But God satisfies you forever….there is no other way but the way God intends, at the end it’s his way and not ours.

  25. So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God. (Ecclesiastes 2:24 NLT)

  26. God giveth wisdom. A wise man will know the plan of God and will follow it. A fool will not know God’s plan and will do things his own way.

  27. Enjoy Life

This is one of the first positive conclusions in a book that often seems to be litany of all things that don’t satisfy the heart. The Teacher will repeat this resolution- that life is to be enjoyed- a number of times (Ecc 3:12-13,22; 5:19; 8:15; 9:7-9) Scripture states clearly that contentment is the key to a satisfying and godly life (Php 4:11-12; 1Ti 6:6). However, the Teacher here is unsatisfied with his own conclusions. Injustice, randomness, feebleness of our efforts to to make life secure- all these things haunt him. And beyond all looms death. He argues that deaths inevitability seems to bleed the meaning out of life (Ecc 2:18-21; 8:8; 9:2-4). The answer in Ecclesiastes 2:24 is a good answer, but it is only a partial one. Something bigger is needed to fill the aching vacuum in the Teachers soul- all humans souls in fact. We have to keep reading to find his answer. Only God can fill this void, life cannot be fully enjoyed without God.

  28. Me, Myself, and I.
Then I took a good look at everything I’d done, looked at all the sweat and hard work. But when I looked, I saw nothing but smoke. Smoke and spitting into the wind. There was nothing to any of it. Nothing. (Ecclesiastes 2:11 MSG)

Wow! How many times can this chapter say, “I did…” We can do things all day long, and never really get anything done. It is only when we let God do things that it changed.

Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. (Psalms 127:1 KJV)

  29. 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

    No Carry-on Luggage

I have friends, and most of them have take one of two different stances with life: “You can’t take it with you, so enjoy it while you can”, or the other of “Save all I can for my kids, and their kids”. The word tells us that it would be foolish of us to gain the world but lose our soul.

Many people worry about making their life more favorable as they grow older. While we should try to grow, our main focus should be to grow spiritually, and not in riches here on earth.

While we will not be able to take the new house, the hot rod, the bass boat, the ( I don’t know, something that girls like), or the money with us, when we pass from this life to the next, we will be able to take the knowledge of Jesus Christ and all the souls that we reached for in His name, trying to save from the grips of sin. We will be able to reach some who can change the future of other souls around them too.

While we cannot carry treasures from this life to the next, through Him we are able to store up treasures for the next life while in this, and those we will truly be able to lay at His feet..

  30. Me, me, me

At the beginning of this chapter I can’t help but notice how often it would repeat me. Too often we lose track of how selfish our hearts become before The Lord. When was the last time you cried through the night for another soul? When was the last time you fasted for another persons broken situation? It’s time to step up and be like Christ. Instead of me, me, me lets look to our brother and sisters needs.
