Ecclesiastes 9

1 For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.

All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

13 This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:

14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:

15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.

  1. Do all things with all your might. But don’t be too confident because all things done under the sun is in the hands of God.

  2. Wisdom and knowledge…but I Need more of God!

10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

When a person is called of God to be one of God’s desciples, I, WE have to be the best that we should be.We may have wisdom and knowledge but it wont do me anygood w/out God(Jesus) on our side.If I we dont love it’s worthless.
I we can have all wisdom and knowledge but I we cant take it w me us when I we are gone up to see Jesus. But I pray that why I do have a bit of those two attributes, use them for God’s earth and towards the Kingdom of God.
Before I leave to go see Him.
This scripture was hard to understand (I had to read it a few times), so if I am not correct I apologize. But MyJesus is always correct and I love Him for holding my hand this morning.
Can have all this stuff but I need more Jesus and He will do love us me you.

  3. ILove to eat the Word

10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

If we are going to do something church in these last days, lets raise up and do it with all our hearts.

Thank-You Pastor and Sister Watts for setting a high standard.

  4. 17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.

    Message Version:
    17. The quiet words of the wise are more effective than the ranting of a king of fools.

    18. Wisdom is better than warheads, But one hothead can ruin the good earth.

Lesson of the day: “Don’t be a hothead”

  5. 16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

What a man does through wisdom is stronger and will last longer than that which is done through strength. Think about that a moment. Who were the construction workers that built the White House? Who was the soul that installed the hinges on the front door? Who were the men who painted the oval office? Now, who was the designer? The original designer was James Hoban; however the White House we know today was designed by Thomas Jefferson.

Let’s be mindful of our wisdom. If we are wise in our conversations versus bullying our way through something because we know we are right and the other person/people do not understand, we might find our conversations more receptive.

  6. 10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

We are the happiest when we are the busiest. Then you don’t have time to worry or fret.
When we are busy doing God’s work then we don’t have time to be in someone else’s business.

  7. LIVE ON PURPOSE

What are you doing? What are your hands involved in? Is it good or evil? Is it right or wrong? Is it temporal or eternal? Is it carnal or spiritual? How committed are you to IT? How FAITHFUL are you? How PASSIONATE are you?

We find 2 principals in this passage:

    1. Whatever you DO, DO IT wholehearted, not half hearted, or lazily. Put your heart into IT. We never know when IT will be our final opportunity.

    2. There are no guarantees to the perfect life. You may be first, you may be the strongest, you may be the wisest, you may have more money and be the best at what you do. However. Everybody experiences trouble at some time or another.

    MSG
11 I took another walk around the neighborhood and realized that on this earth as it is—

The race is not always to the swift,
Nor the battle to the strong,
    Nor satisfaction to the wise,
    Nor riches to the smart,
    Nor grace to the learned.
Sooner or later bad luck hits us all.

***DO NOT ALLOW ROUGH TIMES to destroy or weaken your PASSION.

    Keep on KEEPING ON!

The Apostle Paul did not put all of his confidence in his accomplishments, but he placed his confidence in HIS pursuit of GOD.

Philippians 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

  8. This chapter illustrates hour. The time to do is at hand (Now). No one knows how long one has, as such one must consider the hour; “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest”. What a mighty God we serve! May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  9. 9 This, too, I carefully explored: Even though the actions of godly and wise people are in God’s hands, no one knows whether God will show them favor. 2 The same destiny ultimately awaits everyone, whether righteous or wicked, good or bad,[a] ceremonially clean or unclean, religious or irreligious. Good people receive the same treatment as sinners, and people who make promises to God are treated like people who don’t.

Pastor started out the year with a message entitled “Due Season”. And it has been very evident at the POFW the “DUE SEASON” is in full swing. But I’m also aware that “DUE SEASON” hasn’t happen to everyone with in the church. Some of us are still in the midst of a battle. Some of us are still waiting for some relief from the storm. It’s important to remember that when you are still in you own personal trench that we don’t’ become bitter at the gifts and blessing falling upon our fellow brother and sister in Christ. Just because your time has come , doesn’t mean you can’t praise the Lord and rejoice with them. Don’t let the devil take your hope while waiting on the Lord.Don’t become judgmental of others, bitter or jealous. It’s not only important to wait on the Lord, but its is also important on how we wait .

Remember that: ” For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal.A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to laugh.A time to grieve and a time to dance.A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones.A time to embrace and a time to turn away. A time to search and a time to quit searching.A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear and a time to mend. A time to be quiet and a time to speak.A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8)

Just as death comes to us all, blessing come to us all as well.Your time is coming.

  10. 16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.

    Wow

  11. Ecclesiastes 9:16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man ‘s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.
9:17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

  12. In this scripture, there was alot of instruction to ingest. We are to eat the word. It is our bread of life, daily bread, “Jesus”. In the following verse, he has a point!

4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

    “Time & Chance?”…………Sounds like a leap of faith!…………

  13. 4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

    Dead Church

As the church we should be a light and be bringing hope to all those which we have contact with.

A few of the churches that I have been privilaged to visit (BC) totally missed it. There were no babies in the sanctuary during the worship or the preaching. There was noone shouting and affirming what the preacher was saying. There was (in some) almost as many awake as there was asleep. They missed it. Some clapped. Some danced. Some had smoke and lights. Some even sang a few of the same songs we do, but THEY MISSED IT. It was dead.

The word tells us that everything with breath is to praise the Lord. It tells us to shout with a voice of triumph. We are encouraged to be loud and demonstrative with our praise, when we read through the word. So why are so many churches not? I find myself, a lonely dog, out cutting logs, or splitting firewood, in the middle of whatever weather, but I am rejoicing in the fact that I get the privilage to know who Jesus really is, and I get the honor of telling others of what great things He has done for me.

The Bible tells us that Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah. It tells us that Judah is Praise. So Jesus is the Head of Praise. So again I ask why are there so many dead churches? Why is praise not more boisterous?

I might only be a yapping dog to some, but no matter where I am, I refuse to be a dead lion…

  14. 10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. 11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

  15. Working for a Living.

10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

What are you doing with the time that God gave you? Are you doing His will, or are you doing your own thing? These are questions that we must ask ourselves. Then we ask ourselves are we doing working with all of our might? If a friend asked to do something, we would probably do it with a little more enthusiasm than if your boss asked you to do the same thing. So then are we doing what God commands us to do if we don’t give everyone the same might?

  16. V1 no matter what we are all under Gods hand we can say we aren’t but take a breath now did you make the air? No so that means God is letting use his air to do good or to do bad what you doing with the air?
No matter how much wisdom I get I still need God.
    He is in control.

  17. 17 Words of wisdom spoken softly make much more sense than the shouts of a ruler to a crowd of fools.
18 Wisdom is more powerful than weapons, yet one mistake can destroy all the good you have done. (CEV)

  18. V13-18 delayed gratification

The poor man saved the city but someone else took the credit

Likewise we must recognize as believers we will not always be rewarded on Earth for good, but Our true reward is salvation through Christ. One day we will be with Jesus-face to face.

  19. Sin brought death, and it exempts no one from its curse.
” It is appointed unto man once to die, but after this the judgment ” Hebrews 9:27

We must all die. Then after death, we all meet our Marker , and give account of our lives on earth. Where mankind will receive either the reward of eternal life or eternal punishment without GOD. Of course we want to go to heaven. Our eternal future is far better than anything in this world that’s for sure.

  20. Watch out

12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

At an in opportune time many meet their end. Without warning their time stops, and they no longer have a chance.

The word tells us a man’s life is like a vapor. A whisp of breath gone in a moment.

We must be ready, and do as Jesus said.

    John 9:4
4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day:the night cometh, when no man can work.

  21. HALELUJAH!!! HALELUJAH!!! HALELUAJH!!!
    YES!!!
17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.
WHY??? BECAUSE THE WISE STAY QUIET UNTIL ITS THEIR TURN TO TALK!!! WHO WANTS TO GET ADVICE FROM SOMEONE THAT RULES AMONG FOOLS??? ONLY A FOOL!!! SOOOO
    SHHHHH!!! THANK YOU JESUS!!!

  22. 11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

Time and chance happen to us all. There is nothing we can do to escape life circumstances, aging, and eventually death. We can never be good enough for bad things not to happen. We must all steady endure what this temporary life brings.

    Matthew 5:44:45
    But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven:for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Our hope does not lie in our circumstance or even in the circumstances of the unrighteous, but as children of God our hope lies in the promise that comes with living for Him.

    Psalms 27:14
    14 Wait on the Lord:
be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart:wait, I say, on the Lord.

  23. 18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.

The wisdom of The Lord will give us insight in how to deal with a difficult situation; But sin will bring us to defeat.

  24. 12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

We must be continually conscious of deception that will try to overtake us. We can easily get caught in a trap and become snared and lose out with God. If we will daily seek His wisdom and knowledge and take the counsel of His word, it will lead and guide us into all truth and keep us from harm and evil, and deception.

  25. Time and Chance

11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

Swift, strong, wise, brilliant, learned- we look at the list and envision instant success for the lucky(luck doesn’t exist) person possessing these qualities. Furthermore, when we look at our own lives and do not see those abilities, we might assume we are doomed to mediocrity. Solomon stirs up common assumptions and strips away our fears and excuses. “Time and chance” affect everything. We could find despair and think it doesn’t matter what we do because we cannot control life, or we could see it as an opportunity. Abilities are not all there is to success. God is orchestrating the events of life, the very things that look to us like time and chance (luck). In His plan, He will use us as he wills and as we are willing. God is in control, most of all God has given us authority to take control in His Name.

Luke 10:19 Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.

  26. I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. (Ecclesiastes 9:11 KJV)

No matter your status…. None will be exempt!! What does matter is in the type of attitude you have in your situation, and then coming out of it all will truly say who and what your made of! The Lord does see the intents of your heart!

  27. 11 I returned, and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
    A Time for everything…
This chapter tells me that I should not be interested in how spiritually faster I am or stronger I am than someone else becuase the race is not to the swift or the strong but to he that endures to the end. I also am reminded in this chapter that time and chance happens to all of us. Everyone will get their chance to be what they want to be or to do what they want to do. Its up to you to make the most of that chance.

  28. Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom. (Ecclesiastes 9:10 NLT)

We must work for the Lord while we still have the ability to work. No half hearted stuff. We must strive for perfection an everything we do. Be the Light.

We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work. But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9:4, 5 NLT)

  29. Today

10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

We can never get today again, so what are we doing with our time?

    Colossians 4:5
Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.

    Ephesians 5:15-16
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

In a world of sin we can walk wisely and redeem the time by God’s grace. Our today can become God’s NOW when we let Him take over. Surrender is key, redemption is waiting.

  30. The Lord wants us to understand that only he is in control and at the end his will be done no matter if your good or bad. There is no favoritsm, either you follow his commands and receive his blessings or follow the wicked and be lost in darkness. The Lord of Lord, King of Kings has the power to deliver us and lead us to the promise land.

  31. Verses 16-18 MSG “All the same, I still say that wisdom is better than muscle, even though the wise poor man was treated with contempt and soon forgotten. The quiet words of the wise are more effective Than the ranting of a king of fools. Wisdom is better than warheads, But one hothead can ruin the good earth.”

These verses reminded me of the lesson we are learning this Sunday about King Ahab and Micaiah. Even though Micaiah told the truth about what God told him, he was thrown in prison for it. The hothead, King Ahab, went ahead and still went to war (listening to his 400 false prophets); not wanting to hear what the Lord was telling him.

We must hear the quiet words of wisdom and let truth lead us to do our best for His kingdom. Even though doing what is right may not be the most popular, the easiest or may require more; like Micaiah know that God will take care of you through it all.

  32. 2 All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

Opportunity and life happens to everyone… It is our choices that make our lives what they are. Wisdom is what helps make our life better by making healthy choices that will benefit. Everyone will have a chance to hear the gospel of salvation, the choice is receive or reject…with anything in life it’s all about choices. You work hard and are diligent you will eat of your fruit. You surrender more of your life God will entrust you with more of His kingdom.

  33. 10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

We have a work to do as Christians. Whatever we do, we should do it with all of our heart. There is no need to half way do a job when it comes to the work of the kingdom. Everything we do for God is important.

  34. 4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

It’s better to take little bits like a dog licking crumbs from under a table than to be a great figure and not be living in Christ. God sees your works…

  35. How long until I am forgotten?

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. (Ecclesiastes 9:5 KJV)

When people die we strive to remember them. Their evil is often forgotten quickly and their love remember longer. Eventually they are completely forgotten. Sometimes people are lost in events or circumstances (wars, 9-11, Boston marathon). While a few people remember names many just remember the events. I have heard that a average person is remembered about a year. I think someone of influence in your life might be remembered a few years.

I hope that when I die people see and carry on the work that has been put forth for Jesus. If all they see is things of this world then I truly will be forgotten forever. If people keep working in the kingdom do the things that I once did I might be forgotten, but I know that my life is not in vain.
