Jeremiah 18

King James Version (KJV)

18 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;

If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

13 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.

14 Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?

15 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;

16 To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.

17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

18 Then said they, Come and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

19 Give heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.

20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.

21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

23 Yet, Lord, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.

  1. 3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

    Have Thine own way, Lord!
    Have Thine own way!
Thou art the Potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after Thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still.

  2. 11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

We live in a time where people seek out anything that makes them feel good. Instead of fixing a problem, many cover or mask it only to find it still there when their fix wears off. Some people live for the temporary high that gets their mind off the void they can’t fill. This mindset bleeds over into the spiritual aspect of life when false prophets are rising and money is being poured into ministries that tickle ears, justify lifestyles, and tell everyone it’s all going to be ok. And though sometimes there is building up messages, God also sends hard messages. The truth sometimes hurts. Jeremiah was given a hard message, one that was straight from God, to deliver to a people that did not want to hear it. Sometimes hard messages are still being sent today. I thank God for a pastor that preaches the truth even when it’s unpopular. When we hear a hard message from the pulpit we have a choice whether we will continue living the same way, ignoring it and even possibly getting mad, or we can choose to repent, turn from our wicked ways and submit to God. It’s only then that we can truly begin to live, heal, and fill that void in our lives.

A man of God I grew up under for a few years preached from this passage. He was personally able to witness a potter molding something and when it looked like he was about done he smashed it flat. After inquiring about what happened he learned the potter had found a small lump in the clay and if he were to leave it there it would cause the rest of the object to become more brittle, weakening it to the point it could not, or at least not for very long, fulfill its purpose. When God finds the imperfections in our lives that will hurt us or even destroy us eventually, He will speak a message that is hard for us. We can either choose to begin to work it out with Gods help or He will send situations in our life to knock us flat so He can build us up once again, impurities removed.

  3. “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand. (Jeremiah 18:6 NLT)
Lord have your way with me, you know what I am made of, you know my heart, my intentions, you know what’s good and bad about me. If it takes for you to break me down and start over again, do so Lord according to your will. That I may become the vessel you desire for me to be.

  4. 4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

    MADE AGAIN

How can we be more encouraged than this, the chance that we can be made over. Better yet given a second chance. Let us be clay that is pliable in the potter’s hand. Jesus being the potter, how I hope I will allow him to mold me and make me what I should be. If I am marred break me and melt me where you can mold me and make me what I should be.
This takes more than just speaking.
I have had people in my past say (tell me preacher what I need to do to be ready and when I am wrong), but most of the time when you do they will be offended. How is it that when we need preaching the most, we also resent it the most! Our spirit has to be right for us to receive preaching with the right attitude. Catch this statement.
PREACHING IS WHAT MOLDS US IN THE POTTER’S HAND!!!!
If we cannot be corrected with preaching from our Man of God, we have a long road ahead of us and have not humbled ourselves enough to be pliable in the potter’s hand!!!!

I pray everyday that I will allow God to break me and put me back in the fire if it takes to mold me to be like him. Sometimes it will not be easy, but will be right!! Lord help me to receive what I need from you.

  5. Live or Die

12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

Why in the world will a person given the opportunity to repent will chose to die in sin??? Mostly because they have faith on their own devices, their own actions, and their own ways. They start thinking, where was God when I did this, or when I did that… Men can not do anything with out God but their vanity leads them to believe that they are creators. Creators of what but of chaos and death. There is no ability that men can have that God has not placed in them first. Once men can come to the realization that they are nothing without God, that is when the life of men begins, everything else was a mirage of what God really destine for them to be.

  6. God’s Warning

11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

God tells them to turn from their ways and turn to God. God told them he would change his mind if they would turn to HIM. I wonder how many times in our own lives we get this same kind of response. How many times is it that we are doing something and God sends us a message to turn from our wicked ways and go toward HIM? All too often we have the same response as the people: it will be too hard, I’m too far gone, or even I just don’t want to.

Then the people turned on the messenger. How many times do we turn on our messengers? On Pastor is just being mean, I don’t really have to listen. Brother/Sister so-and-so just doesn’t understand how hard that would be. It’s no big deal, I’ve done this and been alright so far.

WRONG!!! We must listen to the people of God that are in our lives. God placed these people in our lives to help us. The only way that we can stay right with God is for us to listen to God, read HIS word, pray, and LISTEN to the people God has placed in our lives to help us!

No listening is a quick road to distruction.

He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination. (Proverbs 28:9 KJV)

    WE MUST LISTEN!!!!

  7. 23 Yet, Lord, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.

Let the Lord deal with your enemies. At my job I have coworkers that say they don’t believe in God, and yet people will tell them to not say that around me, because I am a “Church man.” God will turn the enemy on itself just as he did with Gideon. When we allow God to fight our battles ,we win!

  8. THE POTTERS PARABLE

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
2 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.
3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.
4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

The SPIRIT of JESUS empowers the believer to “Imagine Creatively”, this act is best fulfilled through the act of a parable. The LORD chose to reveal HIMSELF to man through the art of pottery.

I do not know much about pottery, however I am learning about GOD and understand the principal of pottery, that as long as it is wet and formable it has great value and potential to the Potter.

The LORD GOD is the Potter of mankind, therefore, we are wise to present ourselves to JESUS as soft, wet formable vessels that he may mold us into our most valued potential.

  9. At what instant I shall speak concerning a

what God is saying in these verses is that your actions determine his actions. us through our obedience can actually determine the direction that God acts
even if God has to declared judgment against us if we repent of our sins and turn away from them God will reverse his judgment on us. what a beautiful promise from the Lord!

  10. 6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

The potter is careful when forming and shaping, being sure not to make a mistake. Rough when mixing and adding all the things to make the clay. In everything even if the Clay were to fall apart and break the putter has full control and can easily put it back together again. The potter has a vision for the masterpiece he is creating… Are we willing to be the clay?

  11. The People’s plots and Jeremiah’s Prayer-
    (The African American Jubilee Edition
    King James Version Bible)

This lesson today reminds me of when people maybe mad at you keep being nice and respectable of them and do good to those who despitefully use you. Go that extra mile to them and even sweep the bathroom floor for them (just an example) and show them that you love them and will go that extra mile to help them no matter how they treat you- in Jesus Name.

    Jeremiah 18:18-20-

    18) Then said they, come and let us devises against Jeremiah: for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us give heed to any of his words.
    19) Give heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.
    20) Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good to them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.

  12. 6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

Right now Lord. Mold me, and then use me. I want more of you dear Lord.

  13. 11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

  14. God is waiting on us to let it go. He can put rest to an issue in an instant, but He’s waiting on us to get our hands off of it! God I put my trust in you to put rest in this situation because Lord you know all. Hallelujah!

  15. We should be willing to allow God to mold and shape us to his desired goal for our lives. He will only do what is best for us to make us a vessel for his glory.

    “The Choice is Ours”

8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

    9 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

God always gives us a choice. I pray that we would choose wisely.

I also pray that The Pentecostals of Fort Worth would receive the promises of those who so foolishly laid theirs down.

  17. Let the Lord shape you.

We all have things that have been done that we are not proud of. We must allow God to shape us in his image. This remolding will allow us to get back to track with God.

  18. 12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

This is the feeling that most people have deep down in their heart that have chosen the path that is pleasing in their own eyes. In reality they have no hope for eternal life.

    1 Corinthians 15:19
If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

I’m thankful for the hope that we have once we have surrendered our will to the Lord.

  19. You never know what God is up to

Sometimes in our lives we feel broken, or out of place. We have to have faith in these situations that God is up to something. When I’m faced with a problem, a test or trial I understand two things. The first is if the thing is from God or God allows it then it is meant to teach me something or the second would be it is from the enemy and hes just trying to get me out of Gods will. Either way I have to pass the test. We are Gods work.

The people we work for want the finished work, the beautiful creations that we do but they hate the time between the initial hammer swing and the clean up process. The reason is that they cannot see the finished product in their minds, they have no vision. When the work is finished they forget about all the dust, brokenness and suffering.

We are the same in Gods hands. Pastor always says that if we could only see what God sees. This is so true. If we could only see the finished product. Right now all we see is the toil, the sweat, the tears, the heartache, the pain of what is happening right now. But if we could get a God inspired vision we could see that the Potters hand is at work. The master creation of God almighty lives in us.

    Just wait!!!!!

  20. And I said to God : “ God, listen to me! Just listen to what my enemies are saying. Should I get paid evil for good? That’s what they’re doing. They’ve made plans to kill me! Remember all the times I stood up for them before you, speaking up for them, trying to soften your anger? But enough! Let their children starve! Let them be massacred in battle! Let their wives be childless and widowed, their friends die and their proud young men be killed. Let cries of panic sound from their homes as you surprise them with war parties! They’re all set to lynch me. The noose is practically around my neck! But you know all this, God. You know they’re determined to kill me. Don’t whitewash their crimes, don’t overlook a single sin! Round the bunch of them up before you. Strike while the iron of your anger is hot!” (Jeremiah 18:19-23 MSG)

What a dangerous place to be when one causes the shepherd to remove his covering.

Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit. (Hebrews 13:17 NLT)

  21. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter : so he made it again another vessel , as seemed good to the potter to make it.
    NET
Now and then there would be something wrong with the pot he was molding from the clay with his hands. So he would rework the clay into another kind of pot as he saw fit.

    Crafted for perfection.

We are the clay and he is the potter. All of the characteristics we have that are not Christ like are imperfections that must be worked out. The trials and tests we go through are to make us better. They are the processes to make us more like Christ. He molds us into his image and one day we will put on the incorruptible.

  22. Marred in the hands of the Potter

Many times before God makes something beautiful is shatters it. He cuts off all of the excess, and when the majority of the person is excess there really isn’t much left.

The challenge we face is can we allow ourselves to be marred. Can we allow God to disfigure us, trim us, and cut us. Can we become scarred, tainted, and marred?

There is only anointing from the oil. The oil comes from the crushing. Without the crushing there is no power.

It really is that simple, though an everyday battle. Can we die so he can live?

  23. This chapter illustrates alienated. They wanted to separate themselves from Jeremiah; because they did not want to hear what God (Jesus) had given him. One would be wise to heed word of God, and what sayeth the man of God; “Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them”. What a mighty God we serve! May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  24. 2 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

An invitation to church, the house of the Lord, the Potter. There were so many messages in this chapter but love this one. The representation of church. The place where you can have potter clay experience. A lot of people want to hear a “word” from the Lord, some sort of awesome experience where they can say “wow the Lord spoke to me about my situation!!” some don’t even want yo come to church unless the get a sort of sign from God hear him asking the to go. Well What best place, besides the bible to recieve a Word from God than at church through the preaching of the man of God. Once you walk in then He, the Lord will cause you to hear His word, then He will begin the to work in you, mold you as He desires you to be. What better hands to work on you, to handle you with softness on the wounds yet firm to shape you. A lot of us want to be vessels that He would use. Allow him to do the work, submit freely to the hands of the potter and He will make a vessel for His honor. If in the middle if the process we move on our on will when we are on the wheel, then Him might have to crush it down and start over. That’s why submission is very important. I will go into the house of the potter and recieve His word with meekness and allow Him to mold me like clay in His hands, that I may bring honor to Him.

Psalm 122:1 I was glad when they said to me,“Let us go into the house of the Lord.”

  25. 5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

Lord mold me and shape me into the vessel of honor that you have designed me for.

But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. -2 Timothy 2:20

  26. This chapter reminds of the song:
He’s still working on me to make me what I oughta be it took him just a week to make the moon and the stars the sun and the earth and Jupiter and Mars how loving and patience he must be he’s still working on me.
The day we get relaxed and don’t let God on us is the day we are in trouble.

  27. The Lord wants us to obey and follow his commands. He blesses those that listen and follow him.

Lord I pray for strength, knowledge and understanding so I may be able to serve you, and do you holly will.

  28. Trailblazing

Yet My people have forgotten Me; they burn incense to false gods, they have been caused to stumble in their ways and in the ancient roads, to walk in bypaths, in a way not graded and built up [not on a highway], (Jeremiah 18:15 AMP)

    Deuteronomy 1:33
Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.

    Jeremiah 42:2-3
2 And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the Lord thy God, even for all this remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us:) 3 That the Lord thy God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do.

    Proverb 16:25
There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

There are two kinds of trailblazing we can do: our own or God’s. When we do our own, it leads to death. But when we do God’s, it leads to life. God has a path and a way in store that will cut new trail through life. He makes all things new and He can blaze new trails where there seem to be deadends. God is faithful, we can trust Him to not only direct and guide but provide and bless along all life’s journey.

    Isaiah 54:1-3
1 Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the Lord. 2 Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes; 3 For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited

  29. Verse 6 NLT ““O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand.” Lord I thank you for molding and remolding me. I know your not done wth me yet; but, I desire to be what you want me to be.

  30. The Potter’s Hands

In Biblical times virtually every village or town marketplace featured a potter’s wheel. Since clay abounded in Judah, every home contained clay pottery, for carrying, storing and serving water, wine, and other household goods. Pots were also used for preparing sacrifices (Lev 6:24-28) -specific ones of course, and hand painted pottery decorated royal palaces. These verses illistrate the Master Potter’s sovereignty in shaping the nation of Judah into a vessel that is pleasing to Him. Just as a potter kneads clay to remove impurities and air bubbles, God removes sinful impurities to make people useful for His service. Just as a potter turns the wheel and shapes the clay into a useful vessel, so God uses the turning events to shape His people. In light of the new covenant God has established with us through Jesus Christ, we can trust the Master Potter to work out our imperfections and gently mold us into the likeness of His Son, Jesus.

Romans 8:29 “For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”
