Jeremiah Chapter 21

family devotional – week two: faith for the present

Day Two: What Is Faith?

“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)

In order to tap the endless resources of God, the believer must exercise faith by acting in obedience to God’s Word. As the Apostle Paul explained to the Romans, “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).  When one is prompted by the Word of God or by the leadership of the Spirit, obedience to that prompting is an expression of faith. Such a response enables one to enter into partnership with God, and gives the assurance of success even though the end may not be in sight.

When Noah was directed by God to build an ark, he obeyed by starting a project which lasted for 100 years. Noah had never experienced a flood nor had he even seen rain, yet he obeyed with regard only for the Lord. Since the command of God came without a specific schedule, Noah had to believe and act accordingly because faith has no time limit.

Hebrews 11:7 says that Noah, “when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.” The fear was not fright, but a deep and abiding respect for the Lord and a confidence in His Word.  Faith was the only reasonable response for Noah, as it is for us today. As we look to the church’s future we can’t see it clearly, but we can know that God will honor our obedience to Him in the commitments we make.

Encourage each member of your family or devotional group to ask, Lord, what do you want me to do in our capital stewardship campaign? Whatever He speaks, respond in faith.

Jeremiah 21

1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,

Enquire, I pray thee, of the Lord for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the Lord will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

Then said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah:

Thus saith the Lord God of Israel; Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, which besiege you without the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.

And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath.

And I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence.

And afterward, saith the Lord, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.

And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.

10 For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the Lord: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

11 And touching the house of the king of Judah, say, Hear ye the word of the Lord;

12 O house of David, thus saith the Lord; Execute judgment in the morning, and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my fury go out like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

13 Behold, I am against thee, O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain, saith the Lord; which say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?

14 But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the Lord: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it.

  1. It will be a terrible thing to someday experience the wrath of God and his judgment. We should repent and humble ourselves before him while there is time to do so. The end is coming.

    • iLove to eat the Word.

“Just Repent” God is just looking for someone with a heart that can be molded. He wants us to confess and forsake the present dilemma.

  2. 8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

He has given every one of us this same decision to make…every day we have to make decisions that lead to spiritual life or death; which one will you choose?

    Joshua 24:15 KJV
And if it seem evil unto you to serve The Lord,
    choose you this day whom ye will serve;
whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell:
but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord .

I heard this song often when I was growing up:

I’ll take Jesus, I’ll take Jesus
I’ve tried those worldly pleasures and they failed
When you see the gates of Heaven
And you hear the Master say
Me or the world my child
    Which one will you take

  3. Jeremiah 21:8–10 (The Message)
8–10  “And then tell the people at large, ‘GOD’s Message to you is this: Listen carefully. I’m giving you a choice: life or death. Whoever stays in this city will die—either in battle or by starvation or disease. But whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who have surrounded the city will live. You’ll lose everything—but not your life. I’m determined to see this city destroyed. I’m that angry with this place! GOD’s Decree. I’m going to give it to the king of Babylon, and he’s going to burn it to the ground.’

Obedience brings blessing. Though they were facing capture, and slavery they would have their lives spared through obedience. Many times we face obstacles that do not make sense. The answer sometimes is wait on God when everything in us wants to make something happen.

Yet his word promises that he is an on time God.

    Psalm 27:14 (KJV 1900)
    14  Wait on the LORD:
Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart:
Wait, I say, on the LORD.

    the word wait means

hope for, wait for, look for, i.e., look forward with confidence to that which is good and beneficial, often with a focus of anticipation in a future event

Swanson, J. (1997). Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains : Hebrew (Old Testament). Oak Harbor: Logos Research Systems, Inc.

When we have a hopeful waiting, and not a complaining impatience God will show us through. What a joy to say “see I trusted in God, kept faith, and he came through just like he said!”

  4. 8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

I’ll take Jesus anytime over this world. Jesus is the only one that is going to be there for me. Who do you choose today?

  5. MOTIVATION TO LIVE RIGHT

14 But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the Lord: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it.

Too often the thinking, mentality and lifestyle present a myth about life, that, “regardless of hoe you live life, GOD loves you and you will go to heaven.

I can only imagine that there will be some very angry souls at judgment day; to find that the LORD GOD has kept record of every word spoken and every deed done.

Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Romans 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

Accountability to GOD. What an incredible principal. We must prayerfully consider EVERY word we speak and EVERY action we make, because WE WILL give account.

Matthew 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

I pray, hope and desire to BEAR the FRUIT of the SPIRIT of GOD in my LIFE.

    LIVING THE BLESSED LIFE

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

    NOW

  6. 2 Enquire, I pray thee, of the Lord for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the Lord will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

3 Then said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah:

THE MESSAGE FROM THE MAN OF GOD!

Zedekiah sent to the man of God Jeremiah, that he might hear from God.
The Prophet can only tell what God gives him. The children of Judah had failed to obey God and God was sending them into captivity because of their rebellion against God. The law no longer meant anything to them, they did according to their own heart.

There is a danger in not listening to what God has to tell us, and obeying the word. If we become rebellious we will only bring the wrath of God on us. Remember God chastise them that he loves, and God loves his people. All things works together to the good for those that love God. We might not think everything is so good when we are going through all this stuff, but God always loves his people.

Let us listen to God and obey his prophet. Hearing means obeying a lot of hear just refuse to obey. He is not talking to me, believe me the man of God is talking to you!!!!

Let us see his WONDROUS WORKS, MIRACLES, ETC. HE IS ABLE!!!!!

  7. Behold, I am against thee, O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain, saith the Lord; which say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations? But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the Lord : and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it. (Jeremiah 21:13, 14 KJV)
Wow! What fruit are we showing?

  8. 8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.
Which are you choosing?I choose life everlasting ,which means I’m going to have to do something to get there!!
I want to live and work for The Lord so that when it comes to the end of my journey, He will say well done my good and FAITHFUL servant .

  9. 14 But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the Lord: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it.

You will reap what you sow. Why do we think that we will get away with something? As a child we think that mommy or daddy don’t see us, yet they do. Just as our Heavenly Father sees us. Let us sow good for good.

  10. Too lost to recognize they are lost!!!!!!!!!!!

1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,

2 Enquire, I pray thee, of the Lord for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the Lord will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

How lost can they be? If first they want to destroy Jeremiah for always speaking what God gives him and then in the mist of their sins they come to enquire of God??? What were they expecting, they don’t have to change anything and God will just forget about everything and save them again just because they enquire??? People REPENTANCE is necessary for change, BAPTISM IN JESUS NAME is necessary for forgiveness of sin, BAPTISM IN THE HOLY GHOST speaking in tongues is necessary for our SALVATION. You can go skipping steps, you can not get baptist without repenting. You must repent, change your ways, stop doing sin and do good for God to apply His Mercy and Grace. They must of been insane, for only the insane continue to do the same things and expect a different end. Now we stand in the valley of decision, you repent and be save, or stay in the same path and be dead in sin. I prefer a life with Jesus Christ than to live in the chaos of this world any day… For Jesus gives me Joy, Peace, Mercy, Grace, that are everlasting.

  11. Vs.8, “And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.”

At some point in our life, we all have a chose to make, either to choose the way of life which is JESUS, or the way of death which is the world.

Gal.6:8 says, “For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweh to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”

I choose Life! I choose JESUS!

  12. 8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

He has set the ways before us, it has always been our choice to decide..

  13. I’ve heard quite often recently the phrase

” Only God can judge me!”.

That statement is quite true, but how will HE judge you. GOD’s word says:

” But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the Lord: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it.”

Be careful what you wish for. Maybe those who approach you about your behavior or actions know the “word”, and are very aware of the fact that you currently stand to burn in hell with your current actions. So often as young adults we are quick to think that “old people” are too judgmental, but maybe, just maybe we should welcome those comments we brush off as “old people stuff”. That way we can spend a little more time praising God and a little less time repenting. For God word remains the same, no matter what because socially acceptable.

  14. My God is the one who does everything for us! Why in our right mind would we choose someone or something over the one who does all! God is my idol and everything! Thank you Jesus!

  15. This chapter illustrates options. They were given an option; “Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death”. One is also given an option today; “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. What a mighty God we serve! May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  16. And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith

    8

the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

He that abideth in this city shall die by the

    9

sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.

For I have set my face against this city for evil,

    10

and not for good, saith the Lord: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

    Gods righteous judgment…
in these verses you can clearly see the judgment of God being declared up on a people. these people have not obey the voice of God and if not hearken unto His commands. it’s a scary thing as the Bible says to be in the hands of the living God.

  17. The word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying, (Jeremiah 21:1 KJV)

The “Word” …. That’s all it takes is a spoken word. Everything we see outside was spoken into existance. Moses received a Word from God and the people were set free. Abraham received a Word and a great nation was born. The people in the upper room received a Word and they expericed the first out pouring of the Holy Ghost. It’s the same word that we hear today. What is it saying?

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith ….(Revelation 2:7 KJV)

    Impacting our Future Together

  18. 13 Behold, I am against thee, O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain, saith the Lord; which say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?

  19. 8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

It has always been and always will be up to us to decide what we do and desire. But whatever the decision know that you will always be held accountable; your decisions are your responsibilities. Chose wisely; if you chose death and make a poor decision or action, your sin will find you out and you will suffer the consequences you deserve.

14 But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the Lord: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it.

  20. Jeremiah 21:8 And unto this people thou shalt say , Thus saith the Lord; Behold , I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

The people are offered a choice , but few of them will make the right decision.

Deuteronomy 11:26 Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; A blessing , if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day: And a curse, if you will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.

  21. Verse 8 AMP “And to this people you [Jeremiah] shall say, Thus says the Lord: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.”

Same verse CEV “Then I told them that the Lord had said: People of Jerusalem, I, the Lord, give you the choice of life or death.”

Same verse NIV “Furthermore, tell the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: See, I am setting before you the way of life and the way of death.”

The choice is ours…..I chose life! John 14:6 NLT “Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”

  22. Fight to live

And unto this people thou shalt say , Thus saith the LORD ; Behold, I set before you the way of life , and the way of death .
    NET
“But tell the people of Jerusalem that the LORD says, ‘I will give you a choice between two courses of action. One will result in life; the other will result in death.

He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword , and by the famine , and by the pestilence : but he that goeth out , and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey .
    NET
Those who stay in this city will die in battle or of starvation or disease. Those who leave the city and surrender to the Babylonians who are besieging it will live. They will escape with their lives.

The people who chose to go out and fight would get to live. Even though they lost a battle, they would keep their lives. They would go off into captivity, but b/c they chose to fight, their decedents would eventually be free

  23. Repent

Chapter after Chapter we see God warning the people. He is making it very clear that they should repent. how much does it take for us to repent? Will we die in our shortcomings or repent and be saved by his grace?

  24. 8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

The Lord gives to each of us the opportunity to choose salvation.

John1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

John1:39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

  25. Faith

8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

9 He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.

There is an attitude of faith we must possess that looks beyond our understanding and desire in order to follow after God. It may not always be obvious to us but if we will come in humility and admit our frailty and shortcomings, God will reveal the way we should go.

    Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

    James 2:17
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

We must put our faith into action by not leaning to our own understanding but leaning on God. He sees what we do not, cannot, and will not, and it is revealed to Him through the lens of infinite wisdom. No matter how it looks, we must follow Him.

  26. 13 Behold, I am against thee, O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain, saith the Lord; which say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?

Wow who can stand before the most Holy, Powerful, Mighty God??! You do not want to have God against you. We we choose to live in sin we are just going against God and destrying ourselves. Repentance. One word with a huge significance

  27. The Way

Jeremiah’s words describe the same life choices Moses gave to Judah’s ancestors: life and prosperity or death and destruction (Dt 30:15). Walking in God’s way brings blessings and life, but choosing a self-centered path yeilds death. Way, meaning “path”, “journey”, “manner” or “road”, is used throughout Scripture to contrast the difference between those following God and those following their own sinful natures.

The earlier Christians were collectively called “the Way” (Acts 9:2) because their live pointed to the one who calls Himself “the way and the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6). Jesus is not just one of many ways to reach God; He is God, He is the Way. He leads us on the “narrow..road that leads to life.” (Mt 7:14). He gave us Jesus, Himself the greatesst example to follow, our life should also reflect Him, like an arrow pointing to Jesus, the only Way. God wants us to give directions to the lost, majority of His people don’t even know they’re lost until they see us, reflecting a beacon back to our source: His marvelous light/Spirit.
