Jeremiah Chapter 22

family devotional – week two: faith for the present

Day Three: Why Do We Need Faith?

A personal relationship with God is established by faith and a continuous fellowship with God is maintained by faith.  Paul told the Colossians, “As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him” (Col. 2:6). We receive Him by faith, and we walk in Him by faith. Without faith we cannot please God, and we cannot live effectively for Him.  “Without faith,” the Bible says, “it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6).

Second Kings, chapter 5, records the story of Naaman, a powerful Syrian military leader who was suffering from the most dreaded disease of that era, leprosy.  Someone told him that Elisha, the man of God, could possibly heal him, so he sought the prophet’s help. Elisha instructed Naaman to wash himself seven times in the Jordan River to be healed. The great soldier became angry at such a ridiculous suggestion. “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy,” said Naaman to his servants (2 Kings 5:11). At first he refused, but without any other remedy, Naaman at last went into the river and was healed. The act made no human sense, but in the divine plan it was an act of faith.

Why do we need faith? There is no other way to relate to God, for in His infinite plan He has determined that “the just shall live by faith.”

On your own, with your family, or in a small group, identify one thing you consider an act of faith. Determine to do that thing, and keep a record of the evidence of God’s blessing on obedience in that behavior. Share the results.

Jeremiah 22

1 Thus saith the Lord; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word,

And say, Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates:

Thus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

For if ye do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people.

But if ye will not hear these words, I swear by myself, saith the Lord, that this house shall become a desolation.

For thus saith the Lord unto the king’s house of Judah; Thou art Gilead unto me, and the head of Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited.

And I will prepare destroyers against thee, every one with his weapons: and they shall cut down thy choice cedars, and cast them into the fire.

And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus unto this great city?

Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.

10 Weep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.

11 For thus saith the Lord touching Shallum the son of Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of Josiah his father, which went forth out of this place; He shall not return thither any more:

12 But he shall die in the place whither they have led him captive, and shall see this land no more.

13 Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour’s service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;

14 That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.

15 Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?

16 He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? saith the Lord.

17 But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

18 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!

19 He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

20 Go up to Lebanon, and cry; and lift up thy voice in Bashan, and cry from the passages: for all thy lovers are destroyed.

21 I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.

22 The wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness.

23 O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in travail!

24 As I live, saith the Lord, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence;

25 And I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.

26 And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die.

27 But to the land whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return.

28 Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?

29 O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the Lord.

30 Thus saith the Lord, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.

  1. 8 And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus unto this great city?

9 Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.

God, in His infinite wisdom, always has a reason for doing what He does. We don’t always know His reasons, but in this case He makes it plain. Let us learn by their mistakes and not let the example He made out of this People be in vain.

    Exodus 20:3-5 KJV
[3] Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
[4] Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
    [5] Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

  2. 22 The wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness.

    CAPTIVITY BECAUSE OF REBELLION

The Lord will do whatever it takes to cause us to repent. To repent we must feel ashamed and conviction for our wrong. Conviction is something that moves us to repent. When we fail to repent we will be ashamed when trouble comes our way because of our rebellion.

I pray God never has to bring us into captivity like he did this people to get our attention!!

  3. It up to you/us

3 Thus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place. 4 For if ye do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people. 5 But if ye will not hear these words, I swear by myself, saith the Lord, that this house shall become a desolation.

God gives them and us an option. We can either do what he says or suffer the consequences. These are powerful words to those of us who are head strong. If we repeatedly choose to do our own thing we will surely have great trials.

Desolation – 1 : devoid of inhabitants and visitors : deserted 2 : joyless, disconsolate, and sorrowful through or as if through separation from a loved one 3 a : showing the effects of abandonment and neglect : dilapidated b : barren, lifeless c : devoid of warmth, comfort, or hope : gloomy
    Merriam-Webster

To become a place that is lifeless just because they would not listen.

Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. (Matthew 13:9 KJV)
Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech. (Isaiah 28:23 KJV)

Listen to God and his chosen!

  4. 13 Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour’s service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;

Although it might seem well to get a brother or sister to help, or to do something for you, if they are not rewarded for their labors, is it really right? According to here we have to look deeper into the motives behind getting someone to work for FREE…

  5. HALELUJAH!!! HALELUJAH!!! HALELUJAH!!!
    13 Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour’s service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;
14 That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.
    GOD IS OF ORDER!!!
MAN MAY THINK OR MAKE IT SEEM THAT EVERYTHING IS FINE AND DANDY…….BUT GOD SEES ALL THINGS!!! YOU CAN LIE AND RUN FROM MAN!!! WE MAY RUN FROM GOD BUT WE CANNOT HIDE FROM HIM!!! I DONT WANT TO RUN FROM GOD……IF THERE IS ANYONE OR ANYTHING THAT I’D WANT TO RUN TO, FIRST IT WOULD BE GOD………I MEAN WHY NOT RUN TO JESUS!?! HE IS MY SAVIOR, MY FIRST LOVE, THE ONE THAT KEEPS AND TAKES CARE OF ME, ……….HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR ME (WHEN I WAS UNLOVEABLE)!!! YET HE CHOSE TO LOVE THIS SINNER AND FREELY GIVE HIS LIFE FOR ME!!! NO WORDS CAN EXPLAIN THE GRATITUDE FOR MY DADDY!!! ………JESUS I LOVE THEE, I NEED THEE EVERY HOUR I NEED THEE!!! OOOOO MY JESUS!!! THANK YOU DADDY!!!

  6. Rebellious from youth!!!

21 I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.

God has been keeping track and they have been rebellious from a young age. He has been trying to speak to them, trying to get them to go the right direction; but they closed their ears to His word, and they obeyed not.

1 Sam 15: 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

You can lose the Kingdom by rebellion. Don’t waste time, repent!!!! Now is the time, today is the day of SALVATION.

  7. 22 The wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness.

Thank God for my Pastor. When there is no Shepherd the sheep will play. Be thankful for the pastor in your life.

  8. WE MUST OBEY – IMPACTING OUR FUTURE TOGETHER

(Jeremiah 22:3-5 KJV)

In this passage the LORD commands the King of Judah. He does not suggest or recommend that the house or church of Judah do these things but he commands them to follow through with what HE commands.

The command is to serve the less fortunate and treat everyone with respect. We must ensure that is our Mission at The Pentecostals of Fort Worth. We must continue to serve our community, pray for the sick, encourage the elderly, care for the fatherless, assist the widow and give to the poor.

The consequences are unthinkable. That The POFW would become desolate! NO! We must go more, serve more, do more, give more, build more. We must not allow The POFW to become a desolate land because we refuse to obey.

  9. Oh Jesus I do not want the wrath of God on me or my family. Its time to wake up and see what’s going on around you. Its time we take a stand for what we believe and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ…..Know you that the LORD he is God: it is he that has made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Psalm 100:3

Who is your God today? I choose to serve the one and only JESUS CHRIST…..

  10. 8 And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus unto this great city?

9 Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.

People all around the world know who is God of Israel. POFW has been given opportunity to be in the eyes of many including those in other nations. They know who we serve and proclaim over our lives. If we live/work in obedience to God we will prosper and they will know it is from The Lord. If we choose disobedience then we will fall just the same and many will ask what happened that The Lord did this? POFW has an opportunity to be great (though it is my personal opinion that we are the greatest church!) if we continue to strive to please God. Let us learn from this passage so we may not be tempted to change our ways and suffer the consequences.
POFW a beacon of light, healing, and Gods word.

  11. dear Jesus, I pray everyday that I obey You always no matter where I am in Life I have proof that disobedience doesn’t work but it gives desolation in a life that doesn’t obey. I will always acknowledge you and listen and be corrected by your Word and God’s people. Thank you Jesus for the blessings you give me which I wont take advantage of you. I love you Jesus and thank you for showing me how to surrender to you and you only and the church body, for the furtherance of the gospel. thank you Jesus.

  12. This is what the Lord says: ‘Let the record show that this man Jehoiachin was childless. He is a failure, for none of his children will succeed him on the throne of David to rule over Judah.’ (Jeremiah 22:30 NLT)

If we choose to be disobedient it effects all of the people around us especially the ones that love us the most. We can’t have an attitude of YOLO(you only leave once) so do what you gotta do. It’s my life and I’ll do what “I” want. Think about those that will be effected.

  13. NTL 21 I warned you when you were prosperous, but you replied, ‘Don’t bother me.’ You have been that way since childhood—you simply will not obey me!

This is the case for so many indidividuals, when the going is good, they say “I dont need God”. But when the going is hard, they say “where is God when I need him”. People fail to relize God is always there, waiting for you to speak to him, no matter what the situation is–good or bad. A simple prayer, God is ready to listen to your testimony, your joy, your blessings, and your needs.

  14. 21 I spoke to you in your [times of] prosperity, but you said, I will not listen! This has been your attitude from your youth; you have not obeyed My voice. (AMP)

We can never stop listening and obeying God; during the good and during the bad, we must never turn away. The minute we think we’ve got life all figured out is when God will remind us and put us back in our place.

And there are no “coincidences” in His word, and this particular version says from youth you have chosen to not listen to me [God] and disobey. Today’s generation of youth are given so much “freedom” with no rules to do whatever they please; running around rampant making all kinds of bad choices. I pray that Intense student ministries would be the first to change this status quo, to begin listening and obeying our authorities and more importantly, God.

  15. This chapter illustrates season. Although cherished as they were, their season was at hand; “Thou art Gilead unto me, and the head of Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited”. One is given a space of time, which one would be wise in utilizing that season to seek and obey the Lord. What a mighty God we serve! May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  16. Vs.2-4, “And say, Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates. Thus saith the LORD; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place. For if ye do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people.”

James 1:22 says, “But be ye a doer of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
James 1:25-27 says, “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God, and the Father are this, To visit the fatherless and widow in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”

The Lord not only wanted the king of Judah to be a HEARER of his word,(Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah), but a DOER. (Execute judgment and righteousness, deliver the spoiled, do no wrong, do no violence, do not shed innocent blood.) Then he would be blessed.

The Lord wants us to do the same. He wants us to HEAR His Word and DO His Word, and when we do, we shall be blessed also.

  17. 30 Thus saith the Lord, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.

  18. This is what the Lord says: ‘Let the record show that this man Jehoiachin was childless. He is a failure, for none of his children will succeed him on the throne of David to rule over Judah.’ (Jeremiah 22:30 NLT)
Obedience has its blessings!!! Rebellion will bring a curse on you and your seed that follows!

  19. Deliver out of the hand of the oppressor, and in today’s society this has been an reoccuring incident. Still today this is being done, as we hear the news of persecurted christians, or even murdered in foreign countries today. We are watching daily how our rights are being taken away, and how the Christians are being exploited and murdered. It’s only seems to be getting worse by the day. “Keep the Faith”………………

3 Thus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

    “Be Blessed”……………………………………

  20. Jeremiah 22:16 To love God fully, which results in living a pious life and serving those in need (Deuteronomy 10:12 And now, Israel , what doth the Lord thy God require of thee , but to fear the Lord thy God , to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve theLord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

  21. You Have A Choice

You can choose to obey or disobey. Your choice will either make you or break you. Obedience gets God’s reward and disobedience gets consequences. Let us choose to obey and watch God move.

  22. 13 Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour’s service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;

14 That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.

The house stood. The chambers functioned. The wages were there. This is a picture of wealth, and prosperity. The problem is that many times people see the outside, and dont realize the inside is a wreck.

God sees the heart. When we confess our frailty he swoops in ready to make us anew.

  23. Ilove to eat the Word

3 Thus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

If we do good, the Lord is right there helping us overcoming every obstacle, if we do bad…God is our obstacle.

  24. 10 Weep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.

Pray for the lost and bury the dead. There is no time for looking back now.

    Romans 13:11
11 And that, knowing the time, that now [it is] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed.

We are in a serious time where, as my dad would say, is going to separate the men from the boys. In this case it will separate the true worshipers.

    John 4:
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

What a word from The Lord tonight!!!!
My brother Marco got the Holy Ghost!

You never know what God is going to do in response to our praise and worship.

  25. Pastor sees the bigger picture while all we see is the middle of our mess. He is the one who can lead us our because He follows Christ! When we follow and obey our pastor we are filling Jesus Christ! Thank you pastor for your love, understanding, and forgiveness!

POFW we are blessed to have the leadership that we do! Thank you Jesus!

  26. Woe unto him that buildeth his house by

    13

    unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour’s service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;

if you build your life upon unrighteousness it will be for naught. you have to do right and live right in order to receive God’s blessings of your life.

  27. 29 O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the Lord.

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? -Romans 10:14

POFW here the word of the Lord! What a word spoken to us by Pastor Collins! Great service; get the CD if you missed it.

  28. Verses 1-5 NLT “Listen to this message from the Lord, you king of Judah, sitting on David’s throne. Let your attendants and your people listen, too. 3 This is what the Lord says: Be fair-minded and just. Do what is right! Help those who have been robbed; rescue them from their oppressors. Quit your evil deeds! Do not mistreat foreigners, orphans, and widows. Stop murdering the innocent! 4 If you obey me, there will always be a descendant of David sitting on the throne here in Jerusalem. The king will ride through the palace gates in chariots and on horses, with his parade of attendants and subjects. 5 But if you refuse to pay attention to this warning, I swear by my own name, says the Lord, that this palace will become a pile of rubble.’ If you don’t listen, you can’t give him your attention.

  29. Jeremiah 22:3-5 This is what the Lord says: Be fair-minded and just. Do what is right! Help those who have been robbed; rescue them from their oppressors. Quit your evil deeds! Do not mistreat foreigners, orphans, and widows. Stop murdering the innocent! If you obey me, there will always be a descendant of David sitting on the throne here in Jerusalem. The king will ride through the palace gates in chariots and on horses, with his parade of attendants and subjects. But if you refuse to pay attention to this warning, I swear by my own name, says the Lord, that this palace will become a pile of rubble.’”

    A word for the kingdom, the church.. To obey His commands and He, the Lord will take care of the rest, there will always be a decedant of David. That reminded me of this scriputre;
Jeremiah 3:15 And I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.

But if His words are not obeyed then the Lord himself will destroy and cause it to be desolate. When we do God’s will, obey His commandments God blesses providing everything we need for this life’s journey

  30. 21 I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.

We find in the verses that follow 21 the cost of disobedience (and ignorance)

When God is calling to us, speaking to, leading us and we continually disobey and ignore we bring destruction upon ourselves. God has been pleading for chapters to the Israelites and the leaders to follow Him. They have turned a deaf ear to the prophet Jeremiah and walked in their own ways with the imaginations of their own heart which has been evil in the sight of the Lord.

There is so much paralleled in the book of Jeremiah as in the current day in which we live. It’s bring sadness to the heart of every true believer that the world will not harken to the voice of the Lord and respond to the opportunity give to repent and turn from their wicked ways.
Still Jeremiah continued vocalizing the cry from the Lord. We must do the same. We cannot get weary in well doing, for in do season we will reap a harvest if we faint not.

  31. Following God’s word will keep us. He gives us instructions in his word to help and protect us, not hurt us. Following him and letting him direct our path keeps us from trouble.

  32. Our Inheritance

3 Thus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

There is a justice of God that exceeds the execution of judgement; beyond the final judgment is the reality of the eternal kingdom of God, which will continue beyond the sin and pain of this life as this world will pass away and death will be swallowed up in victory. The reality of His kingdom can be tasted here as we experience His kind him within us as born again believers. Yet it is only a taste:

    Ephesians 1:13-14
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

The best here is still only the earnest of our inheritance.

    Romans 14:17
For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Our inheritance is so rich and vast, it is amazing what we can experience now, yet we must remember there is still so much more to come.

  33. When God Swears

God calls the king and the people to show mercy to others, especially the poor and needy. God takes this directive so seriously that he pledges himself by a solemn oath to destroy the king’s house for disobeying this command.

The Bible is full of people making pledges, using common phrases such as “as the Lord lives” (1 Sa 14:45), and “God is a witness” (Ge 31:50), and “God ..judge between us” (Ge 31:53). But when God swears by Himself, humans need to take notice. Hebrews 6:13 says, “When God make His promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for Him to swear by, He swore by Himself.” God is the ultimate authority to back any oath. When He makes a commitment, we can trust His Word no matter what.

  34. Thus saith the LORD ; Execute ye judgment and righteousness , and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor : and do no wrong , do no violence to the stranger , the fatherless , nor the widow , neither shed innocent blood in this place .
    NET
The LORD says, “Do what is just and right. Deliver those who have been robbed from those who oppress them. Do not exploit or mistreat foreigners who live in your land, children who have no fathers, or widows. Do not kill innocent people in this land.

For if ye do this thing indeed , then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David , riding in chariots and on horses , he, and his servants , and his people .
    NET
If you are careful to obey these commands, then the kings who follow in David’s succession and ride in chariots or on horses will continue to come through the gates of this palace, as will their officials and their subjects.

But if ye will not hear these words , I swear by myself, saith the LORD , that this house shall become a desolation .
    NET
But, if you do not obey these commands, I solemnly swear that this palace will become a pile of rubble. I, the LORD, affirm it!”

    Obedience brings the blessing.

When you obey God you set yourself up for the blessings. Sometimes we can enjoy the blessings of the righteous people before us. In this case the had the opportunity to enjoy David’s blessings. Today we can enjoy our pastors ans so on.

  35. The God of all

Am I a God at hand , saith the LORD , and not a God afar off ?
    NET
Do you people think that I am some local deity and not the transcendent God?” the LORD asks.

The thought that is expressed here must be viewed against the background of ancient Near Eastern thought where gods were connected with different realms, e.g., Baal, the god of wind, rain, and fertility, Mot, the god of drought, infertility, and death, Yam, the god of the sea and of chaos. Moreover, Baal was worshiped in local manifestations as the Baal of Peor, Baal of Gad, etc. Hence, Baal is sometimes spoken of in the singular and sometimes in the plural. The Lord is the one true God (Deut 6:4). Moreover, he is the maker of heaven and earth (Gen 14:12; 2 Kgs 19:15; Ps 115:15), sees into the hearts of all men (Ps 33:13-15), and judges men according to what they do (Ezek 7:3, 7, 27). There is no hiding from him (Job 34:22; Ps 139:7-12) and no escape from his judgment (Amos 9:2-4). God has already spoken to the people and their leaders through Jeremiah along these lines (Jer 16:17; 21:14). Lurking behind the thoughts expressed here is probably Deut 29:19-21 where God warns that one “bad apple” who thinks he can get away with sinning against the covenant can lead to the destruction of all. The false prophets were the “bad apples” that were encouraging the corruption of the whole nation by their words promoting a false sense of security unconnected with loyalty to God and obedience to his covenant. The first question deals with the issue of God’s transcendence, the second with his omniscience, and the third with his omnipresence.
