Jeremiah 39

1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, came Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and all his army against Jerusalem, and they besieged it.

And in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the city was broken up.

And all the princes of the king of Babylon came in, and sat in the middle gate, even Nergalsharezer, Samgarnebo, Sarsechim, Rabsaris, Nergalsharezer, Rabmag, with all the residue of the princes of the king of Babylon.

And it came to pass, that when Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all the men of war, then they fled, and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king’s garden, by the gate betwixt the two walls: and he went out the way of the plain.

But the Chaldeans’ army pursued after them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho: and when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment upon him.

Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes: also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah.

Moreover he put out Zedekiah’s eyes, and bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon.

And the Chaldeans burned the king’s house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and brake down the walls of Jerusalem.

Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive into Babylon the remnant of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to him, with the rest of the people that remained.

10 But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left of the poor of the people, which had nothing, in the land of Judah, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time.

11 Now Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, saying,

12 Take him, and look well to him, and do him no harm; but do unto him even as he shall say unto thee.

13 So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard sent, and Nebushasban, Rabsaris, and Nergalsharezer, Rabmag, and all the king of Babylon’s princes;

14 Even they sent, and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison, and committed him unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, that he should carry him home: so he dwelt among the people.

15 Now the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,

16 Go and speak to Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.

17 But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid.

18 For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.

  1. 18. FOR I WILL SURELY DELIVER THEE, AND THOU SHALT NOT FALL BY THE SWORD, BUT THY LIFE SHALL BE FOR A PREY UNTO THEE: BECAUSE THOU HAST PUT THY TRUST IN ME, SAITH THE LORD.

  2. ILove to eat the Word

Gods word will always come to pass

God allowed Jerusalem to fall into the captivity. I imagine the armies in heaven just watched as the enemy swept in. The angels that were accostumed to fighting and delivering Israel had to stand by and watch the destruction. All God had to do was say the Word and they would have defended Gods chosen…

Let’s not offend God POFW… We need God to always be free to loose the Heavenly Host on our account.

  3. Do not be afraid of Jesus but fear for Him and His power is good-

    2 Timothy 1:7-
For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of sound mind.

vs 18/ says that we may be afraid of people they may try to come out strong/prey towards us but if we trust the Lord He will save us. Thank you Jesus. I pray that I wont put fear in man and fear God(Jesus

  4. 6 Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes: also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah.
7 Moreover he put out Zedekiah’s eyes, and bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon.

    Stolen Vision

When we disobey the word of the Lord, we allow ourselves to be placed in a position to loose our vision for all God has in store for us…

  5. This chapter in Jeremiah along with Proverbs 12 spoke to me about the rewards of humble obedience. When we surrender everything to God and let him reign within us; he uses us, guides us, protects us with his mighty hand.

God rewarded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian with life for his obedience as verse 18 NLT says “Because you trusted me, I will give you your life as a reward. I will rescue you and keep you safe. I, the Lord, have spoken!’” Proverbs 12:28 NLT “The way of the godly leads to life; that path does not lead to death.”

I believe that God gave Ebed-melech the right words to speak to the king on Jeremiah’s behalf in yesterday’s chapter. Proverbs 12:6 NLT says “The words of the wicked are like a murderous ambush, but the words of the godly save lives.” Ebed-melech’s obedience not only led to life for Jeremiah; but, also to him.

Proverbs 12:14 MSG “Well-spoken words bring satisfaction; well-done work has its own reward.”

  6. DELIVERED THROUGH TRUST IN THE LORD

18 For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.

Trusting GOD through times of harvest and favor is no hard task. However, trusting GOD through the war and famine is the proving ground of FAITH. Several scriptures ran through my mind today as I read this chapters final verse. The key words are TRUST and DELIVER. GOD is more interested in DELIVERANCE than JUDGMENT. The HOLY nature of GOD is to FORGIVE.

    A few include:

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

1Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Regardless of the trouble you may face in life today; the WORD is TRUST in the LORD!

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iTrust
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  7. 15 Now the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,

Even with the words of judgement that had been spoken coming to pass, God still stretched out His mercy and grace to Ebedmelech and sent a word of comfort and promise from the Lord. Chapter after chapter reveals God trying to get the people of Israel to turn their hearts, but they are stubborn and rebellious, yet God still warns, and gives space for grace. So much like our current generation. God is pleading with people, calling backsliders back to a place of restoration, placing people in situations that they have to turn to Him, and still they continue to walk in their own ways. Lord help us to not be stubborn and rebellious and surrender our hearts and ways to you!

  8. 11 Now Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, saying,
12 Take him, and look well to him, and do him no harm; but do unto him even as he shall say unto thee.

Wow even the enemy king understood who Jeremiah was. When you are called of God,even the enemies of this world understand who you are. To often we worry about what our name is. But what would happen if we allow Gid to raise us up and through Him ave our name.

  9. The Giver of Life.

When you trust in the Lord, He will deliver you, and give you Life more abundantly.

  10. Vs.16-18, “Go and speak to Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the LORD of host, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee. But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the LORD: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid. For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith he LORD.”

Because Ebedmelech stood in the gap for Jeremiah the prophet (the man of God) yesterday, we see the favor of God upon him today in this chapter. The Lord said that he would not give him over to the men that he was afraid of, but would deliver him and save him.

When we put our TRUST in God, he will deliver us too.

Ps. 56:2-4 says, “Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. What time I am afraid, I will TRUST in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my TRUST; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.”

When we have God on our side, and we put our TRUST in him, what do we have to be afraid of?

  11. 5 But the Chaldeans’ army pursued after them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho: and when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment upon him.

  12. The Conquer’s Policy

In this final siege of Judah, Jerusalem is totally destroyed and all the remaining people fall captive except for a small remnant. Babylon’s cunning foreign policy toward conquered lands calls for deporting the powerful and wealthy, leaving a few destitude citizens in charge of the land. This policy assures that the gratefully indebted poor- too fear- full of revolt- remain loyal to their conquerors and that the devestated exiles remain too weak to rebel. Carnal kingdoms don’t see the lowly and poor to be a threat, thus creating such policies to care for the land while still controling the conquered land. God has plans for the lowly (Job 5:11) but He calls us to be humble and not proud or arrogant. Everytime God tells Israel to conquer He always tells them to leave nothing behind, and sometimes not to take anything away as plunder. Why? Because He wants us to wipe out our enemy, God however spoke through Jeremiah prophesying that their will be a remnant to rise up. God sent Neb to take exile his people, the conquer’s policy had a hole in it. God’s policy, commands, statutes, plans will absolutely never have a hole in it. We can always trust in the Lord.

Ps 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

1 Tim 6:14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ

  13. The prophecy of Jeremiah has come to fruition. The people watch as the judgment of God is poured out onto their city, and are led away captive.

Yet deep below in the prison is the man of God. Soon the captor retrieves him, and delivers him from his calamity.

14 Even they sent, and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison, and committed him unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, that he should carry him home: so he dwelt among the people.

No matter what happens we must trust in God. The children of Israel followed the cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night. God knew the whole time what would transpire during the journey. Nothing surprises God. We have an amazing opportunity afforded to us in the midst of crisis.

Even in the midst of problem God is on the throne.

  14. 12 “See that he isn’t hurt,” he said. “Look after him well, and give him anything he wants.”

Ask God and he will deliver, seek God and you will find him, knock on his door and he will answer your prayers. God will give you what you need and when you need it.

  15. It shouldn’t matter what we do as long as God gets all the deserved glory! We are vessels for Him and it is an honor to be used in His kingdom. All glory goes to Jesus!

    Thank you Jesus!!

  16. 15 Now the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,

God knows how to speak to you even when the enemy tries to lock you up. When you are in tune with God’s word, no matter where you may be, God knows how to get a hold of you.

  17. 17 But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid.

18 For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.

Obedience is a sure way to lead to the favor of God. There is a special reward as I. Our own children for listening and doing what your told.

    1 Samuel 15:
22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD [as great] delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey [is] better than sacrifice, [and] to hearken than the fat of rams.

  18. 16 Go and speak to Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.
17 But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid

God sees the things we do for the kingdom & for our brothers & sisters-even a cup of cool water in his name. Nothing is too small for God to reward. Pastor needs each of us to be on guard & protect him from whatever would try to come against him…watch …& pray for him too.

  19. 17 But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid.

18 For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.

  20. Because YOU TRUSTED ME…..

Because you trusted me, I will give you your life as a reward. I will rescue you and keep you safe. I, the Lord, have spoken!’” (Jeremiah 39:18 NLT)

Trust a word that at times and of course wasn’t/ hasn’t been one of my favorite words in my life.
But by the grace of GOD I’ve learned to embrace it.
I was asked last week by Someone that I love… “Do you trust me”. I said “Yes, I Trust You”.
God has brought such peace, and comfort in my life, despite of so many things that have come against me.
I was told by a very WISE MAN OF GOD, when things come against you, say JESUS, JESUS, JESUS.
THAT WONDERFUL NAME JESUS, at the tip if my tongue. And I’m thankful for that. There isn’t any other name that I can call on and truly depend on.

    In my battles, JESUS.
    In my loneliness, JESUS
    In my desperation, JESUS.
    In my sickness, JESUS.
    In my broken heart, JESUS.

YES, I hold on to HIS Word, oh YES I’m praising my GOD NOW!!!!! Come on brother and sister rejoice with me! Gloria A Dios!!!! Hallelujah!!!!!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. (Proverbs 3:5, 6 NLT)

  21. Vision

7 Moreover he put out Zedekiah’s eyes, and bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon.

Zedekiah lacked vision long before he lost his eyes. God reached for him and gave him many opportunities to catch His heartbeat, but Zedekiah resisted and chose blindness.

    Proverbs 29:18
Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

In contrast, Ebedmelech displays his vision of faith by putting his trust in the Lord. His testimony looked beyond the temporal to abide in the reality of God.

A life founded on Jesus is the only one that will stand. Storms will come in life, times of trials, times when all around seems dark and confusing… but Jesus is the light that breaks through all that when we keep our vision locked on Him.

    Matthew 7:24-25
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

    Acts 26:15-18
15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. 16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; 17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, 18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

    1 Peter 2:4-9
4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light

  22. 16 Go and speak to Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.

Blessed is the man who puts his trust in the Lord. What assurance, that the Lord of angel armies tell you. I got you covered because you have trusted in me.

Psalm 91:7-14 Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished. If you make the Lord your refuge,if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you;no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angelsto protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their handsso you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras;you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.I will protect those who trust in my name.

  23. 15 Now the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,

In your darkest time The Lord will speak. The question is will your hear?

  24. For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy

    18

life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.
trusting and believing on God can protect and keep you in the evil day. God is a righteous and merciful God who will keep us and protect us against the enemy and if we trust and rely on Him and His Word

  25. This chapter illustrates trust. Jeremiah and Ebedmelech received favor and were spared. Trust in God will spare one, when one needs it; “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding”. What a mighty God we serve! May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  26. 18 For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.
