Ezekiel 18

1 The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying,

2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?

3 As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,

6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,

7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,

9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God.

10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,

11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife,

12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.

14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,

15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife,

16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,

17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

19 Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.

20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?

26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the LordGod. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

  1. “Therefore, I will judge each of you, O people of Israel, according to your actions, says the Sovereign Lord. Repent, and turn from your sins. Don’t let them destroy you! Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel? I don’t want you to die, says the Sovereign Lord. Turn back and live! (Ezekiel 18:30-32 NLT)
Thankful that we serve a righteous GOD. There is a price that is paid for sin and that is death. Obedience to God’s word brings life. It’s simple! But many choose to live a life (of sin) that is pleasurable for awhile, not considering the consequences. It’s easier for them to live that lifestyle than to live a life of obedience. The Lord continually warns us, His desire and hope for us is to live and not die! As for me I want to live and not die(spiritually).
I thank God for giving me access to His word, thankful for the blood that was shed on Calvary, and thankful for the Holy Ghost!!! It’s what keeps me going, and walking in truth!
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. (Acts 2:38-40 KJV)

  2. 31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

Those that die in sin don’t praise or worship, so God doesn’t get any glory. If we turn from our sins and live, there is one more voice to praise Him.

    Psalm 51:10 KJV
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

  3. Verses 30-32 MSG ““The upshot is this, Israel: I’ll judge each of you according to the way you live. So turn around! Turn your backs on your rebellious living so that sin won’t drag you down. Clean house. No more rebellions, please. Get a new heart! Get a new spirit! Why would you choose to die, Israel? I take no pleasure in anyone’s death. Decree of God, the Master. “Make a clean break! Live!”:”

Acts 17:30-31 MSG ““God overlooks it as long as you don’t know any better—but that time is past. The unknown is now known, and he’s calling for a radical life-change. He has set a day when the entire human race will be judged and everything set right. And he has already appointed the judge, confirming him before everyone by raising him from the dead.””

Acts 10:34-36 MSG “Peter fairly exploded with his good news: “It’s God’s own truth, nothing could be plainer: God plays no favorites! It makes no difference who you are or where you’re from—if you want God and are ready to do as he says, the door is open. The Message he sent to the children of Israel—that through Jesus Christ everything is being put together again—well, he’s doing it everywhere, among everyone.” The time is NOW, while we still have the chance……repent and live.

  4. A soul that transgresseth shall die, but God takes no pleasure in the wicked dying in their sins.
Vs.23 says, “Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?”
Vs.32 says, “For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.”

It is not the Lord’s will that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is lonsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

God wants us to Repent, and turn from our wicked ways, and Live. He wants us to have a new heart and new spirit within us.
Vs.31 says, “Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?”

My prayer today is: Ps. 51:10 says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

  5. An Equal and Just God

Israel children will no longer bare the sins of their fathers, nor their fathers the sins of the children. God makes it clear that He will judge each soul according to their acts. The righteous shall live, and the wicked shall die. You could be righteous all your life but if you transgress and not repent you will die. In the same manner if you transgress but repent and do right, God will bless you with life. For He does not take joy in the ones that die, He wishes for everyone to have life and have it more abundantly. So if you have sinned, all you need to do is repent, and never return to your wicked ways; and He will place a new heart and a new Spirit in you. Thank you Jesus for you are a Just God.

  6. 30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the LordGod.

In many religions , there are gods that are blood thirsty. But thanks be to the One true God, to robe himself in flesh and die for the innocent blood to not be shed. Just as good parent, does not delight in correcting the child. So God is with us. We are His children ,and yet he will correct us when we need it. All I can say is that ,I am thankful for my God in whom I can trust to provide all my needs.

  7. THE FRUIT OF SIN

4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Understanding my place in the world or in creation, the place that GOD has created me in, my position in HIS creative order and HIS Kingdom.

    ALL SOULS ARE HIS

I belong to GOD and my life is in HIS hands. HIS ways must become my ways, HIS thoughts must become my thoughts. Because the soul that sinneth, it shall DIE. THE FRUIT OF SIN is death. Why bring that upon yourself? Why choose death over life? GOD’s plan of escape.

    REPENT = LIFE
    SIN = DEATH

    SIMPLIFIED for our UNDERSTANDING

    CHOOSE LIFE

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

GOD did not create us to kill us, GOD made us to enjoy life with HIM.

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive

  8. This chapter illustrates just. The fairness of God (Jesus) was presented. All have free will, one that chooses God’s way will live, whereas one that doesn’t, and refuses to repent will unfortunately perish; “For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye”. What a mighty God we serve! May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  9. 23 “Do you think that I like to see wicked people die? says the Sovereign Lord. Of course not! I want them to turn from their wicked ways and live.
24 However, if righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things and act like other sinners, should they be allowed to live? No, of course not! All their righteous acts will be forgotten, and they will die for their sins.
25 “Yet you say, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right!’ Listen to me, O people of Israel. Am I the one not doing what’s right, or is it you? (NLT)

*What a question. The answer should be obvious, yet it’s so tricky for some, and can be a rude awaking for others.

31 Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel?
32 I don’t want you to die, says the Sovereign Lord. Turn back and live! (NLT)

  10. 5-9 “Imagine a person who lives well, treating others fairly, keeping good relationships—
doesn’t eat at the pagan shrines,
doesn’t worship the idols so popular in Israel,
    doesn’t seduce a neighbor’s spouse,
    doesn’t indulge in casual sex,
    doesn’t bully anyone,
    doesn’t pile up bad debts,
    doesn’t steal,
doesn’t refuse food to the hungry,
doesn’t refuse clothing to the ill-clad,
    doesn’t exploit the poor,
doesn’t live by impulse and greed,
doesn’t treat one person better than another,
But lives by my statutes and faithfully
    honors and obeys my laws.
This person who lives upright and well
shall live a full and true life.
    Decree of God, the Master.
10-13 “But if this person has a child who turns violent and murders and goes off and does any of these things, even though the parent has done none of them—
    eats at the pagan shrines,
    seduces his neighbor’s spouse,
    bullies the weak,
    steals,
    piles up bad debts,
    admires idols,
    commits outrageous obscenities,
    exploits the poor
“—do you think this person, the child, will live? Not a chance! Because he’s done all these vile things, he’ll die. And his death will be his own fault.

What we do is our choice! We cant blame others for what we did! No one is perfect but we do know the right from wrong! God knows no one is perfect so he said repent! The least we can do for God is try our best and left him take over our lifes! 🙂

  11. It is up to you

“What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: “ ‘The parents eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? (Ezekiel 18:2 NIV)

The judgement of a God was so great the people started to quote a proverb that would explain the judgement they were facing. They blamed the sins of their parents referencing the scripture (Exodus 20:5) – “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,”

However, they were worse than their fathers and in this passage God states that it is the soul that sins that shall be punished and die.

Their sin had caused their sacrifices to be contaminated and ineffectual. And their good works, their offerings, could not transmit cleaness. In other words, sin is contagious, righteousness is not. Haggai 2:11-14

Now, they are ruffed to repent and have a change of heart so that they might live. In the midst of all the abominations, Gods grace gave Rome for repentance.

Romans 5:20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, NAS

  12. Some think since God has ordained judgment must be crule and vindictive. NO. God pleasures in repentance. He must judge those who will not repent.

  13. 30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the LordGod. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

God judges us for our own actions. We can’t bring our buddies before the throne, and call a witness. God is the witness.

Repentance is necessary everyday, and whenever we feel like we need to. Separation from God numbs us from his voice. We can’t lead other where we have not gone. Sin stifles leadership.

I am thankful that we have a promise from God.

    2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us- ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Come to the one who yearns to forgive.

  14. 25-28 “Do I hear you saying, ‘That’s not fair! God’s not fair!’?

“Listen, Israel. I’m not fair? You’re the ones who aren’t fair! If a good person turns away from his good life and takes up sinning, he’ll die for it. He’ll die for his own sin. Likewise, if a bad person turns away from his bad life and starts living a good life, a fair life, he will save his life. Because he faces up to all the wrongs he’s committed and puts them behind him, he will live, really live. He won’t die.

29 “And yet Israel keeps on whining, ‘That’s not fair! God’s not fair.’

“I’m not fair, Israel? You’re the ones who aren’t fair.

30-32 “The upshot is this, Israel: I’ll judge each of you according to the way you live.

Live!”MSG

We/I am gonna pay for our own sins, we/I can’t go to heaven on someone else’s skirt tail. If you commit the sin you do the time. Our children are watching us and how we act and what we do. You never know what your children are thinkng when they are watching us do something that we have raised them to not do. When we sin and are a stumbling block to someone and we repent over it sometimes that person that we have hindered has went to far and can’t get back where he/she needs to be therefore I think their blood is on our hands. Be careful that you are not dragging someone out of the church with your gossiping and backstabbing. Like the saying goes if you don’t have nothing nice to say don’t say nothing at all!!!!! God is a just God and we are going to be held accountable for every sin and word that we have done. No one makes you/me sin or turn our hearts against God we do that on our own, so its time to man/woman up and take responsibility of what we are doing and have done.

  15. Man has free will, that’s how God wanted it to be. He has given us all a choice on if we are going to serve Him. It’s sad to say however that many choose the wrong decision. Along with free will He allows us to know right from wrong, and when we knowingly sin it throws Him back on the cross to be crucified.

  16. thank you jesus for your aldoing lord your great and mighty and we thank you for the marvelous things you do for us the places you took us out off the things you healed in our body and out and the miracles and blessings you giving us lord for you are worthy of so much and we just thank you I love you

  17. 4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,
God puts it very plainly in these verses how he feels about sin. “The soul that sinneth it shall die” At the same time God makes it clear that if you do that which is lawful you shall live. I choose lawful living unto life and not sin unto death…

  18. iLove to eat the Word

these scriptures are very clear that our salvation is not truly secure until we are actually dead and passed from this life to the next. Those who live their whole life for the devil and at the end turn to Jesus will be saved and those who live their whole life for Jesus and at the last moment turn to satan will be lost…that is amazing. God is the righteous Judge.

  19. Dont play God

30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin

Who are we to judge when God should lower his sword on someone? We are foolish to be upset at the Pastor for not taking the action that we thought he should take in the correction of his own sheep. The Pastor knows his job and if you truly believed that he was called to be your Pastor then you wouldn’t be so tangles in the decisions that he makes concerning the spiritual growth or non-growth of the congregation that you know he was called to Shepard not you. The pastor will hear the correct action for correction or he will be called to watch and pray. Sometimes that’s all you can do. The bible says to work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. This is our call not to go into battle on our own but to understand where are coverings are and stay underneath them lest we be exposed in the battle. It would be foolish to goo into battle with no plan of action or protection. There are certain things that we have to come by ourselves. The prayers of the faithful and the travail of the Man of God in your life will go before you but when the day comes God alone will judge his people. Let us realize our role in this walk of life and do our part but never try to assume that you know what the judgment of God needs to be for someone else.

  20. In this scripture, it is clear how the Lord feels toward sin. He doesn’t pleasure in th death of anyone, but tries to draw people away from sin. So, they can live in a righteous state and ensure their salvation. God is a God of justice, and will punish when he has too. But, you can save yourself from judgement and discontinue any sinful activity. Live and get that new heart with a new spirit.

27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

    “Be blessed”………………………………………………………………

  21. Born that way

Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like, That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. (Ezekiel 18:14, 17 KJV)

We were all born into sin. We all came from a place that we were impure. Som of us still struggle with these things daily. Others have symptoms every now and then, but we all came from sin. With God he have the ability to change the way we were born. We can change what we do, where we go, our speech, and our lives. Medically it has been proven that you can change living cells withspoken words. If you think that you can’t change then you won’t. If you think you can change, then you will.

  22. 10. If he begft a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things, 11. And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife, 12. Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination, 13. Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die;his blood shall be upon him. Refer to Ezekiel 8:6

  23. Equal opportunity; the choice is yours. Here again throughout the whole chapter we see how salvation is an individual thing. You must work at your own salvation.

20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Everyone has the opportunity to work out their own salvation. It’s by the way you choose to live your life that you will die or live. If you are righteous and obey the Lord no matter what your ancestors did your righties ways will give you life and on the contrary inequity and wickedness will surely cause death. We have the tremendous power of choice, others call it free will. Choose to sin, choose to suffer. Choose to obey and be blessed.

  24. A New Beginning

4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

We may look at the faults of those who have gone before us, parents or otherwise, and become discouraged. The mountains they failed to climb, the rivers they failed to cross, the valleys they failed to endure… But we can have a new beginning in Christ. Others’ failings don’t have to be our own just because they set the example for us. When we live for Christ, we are moulded more and more into His faultless image and become more and more who He desires us to be.

    Romans 8:29
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

  25. Who does your heart live for?

This passage is a great example of those who believe by doing good works it allows them immediate passage into heaven. God is not a person who can be paid through nice gestures. You need to choose in your heart who you will live for, God or the things of this world aka the devil. It’s not hard to live for something you love. By loving something/someone you open your heart to know them building a relationship. God has it laid out for what he wants from us in order to live a righteous life… He wants to know you love him enough to live for Him

Who does your heart live for?

  26. Breaking the Cycle

20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Here, through Ezekiel, God makes it clear that He judges and rewards people only for their own sins or their own faithfulness, not for that of their parents. This seems to contradict ealier Biblical statements: “I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.” (Ex 20:5). Scripture says that we are to “hate the appearance of evil” and if we participate and enjoy wickedness, then we therefore hate God. We are on one team or the other.

There is a distinction, however, between Ex 20:5 and here. In Exodus, God is saying that the rebellious person’s punishment will affect his or her children. Israelite society had stronger family ties than we do, in modern society, can even comprehend -people were not viewed as individuals, but as part of the larger entity of the family. We still see the effects of sin passing from one generation to the next. Israel went through a generation dying off in the 40 death march in attempt to teach them to depend on God and let go of idolatry. Joshua led them into the promised land, even though Israel witnessed the death of a generation, they continued in sin. Soon after they rejected Aaron’s sons and elected Judges which didn’t last long either because they also rejected their God, desiring a king like their surrounding pagan nations. Generations grew further away from God because they learned to live the wayward ways their parents did. I wonder were our modern (time where people want information faster, want to feel conected while being isolated, and religion without a God) days learned to live from? Their was a kink in the line called sin trinkling down the generations then, now, and to come.

The amazing message of Ezekiel is that wickedness does not have to be generational. We are not doomed to live in the same wickness, and judgment of past generations. God’s grace and forgiveness, which have the power to break the cycle, are available to anyone who seeks Him. Jesus came to break every chain for His glory, to redeem us. He gave us the opportunity to deliver this message the same way He spoke to Ezekiel.

John 9:1And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 2And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. 4I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
