Daniel 1

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;

4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

9 Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.

11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.

16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

18 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

  1. Thank you Jesus for giving us strength and power. To fight even in our toughest moments for replacing our hurt with love and care our fear with joy and strength and giving us coraouge I love you Jesus

  2. There are many things that came to mind when reading this chapter. Verses 1-6 reminded me of what our church believes in: training, learning and preparing disciples through leadership training and discipleship classes, etc. This is all in preparation to work for the kingdom of God.

Verse 8 CEV says “Daniel made up his mind to eat and drink only what God had approved for his people to eat. And he asked the king’s chief official for permission not to eat the food and wine served in the royal palace.” Daniel made a choice and was steadfast in what he believed; we too must make up our minds and not be moved. When we do this, God’s favor will be upon our lives and help us withstand the tests of life that come our way. Verse 9 AMP “Now God made Daniel to find favor, compassion, and loving-kindness with the chief of the eunuchs.” Verse 17 AMP “As for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all [kinds of] visions and dreams.” Verses 17-19 MSG “God gave these four young men knowledge and skill in both books and life. In addition, Daniel was gifted in understanding all sorts of visions and dreams. At the end of the time set by the king for their training, the head of the royal staff brought them in to Nebuchadnezzar. When the king interviewed them, he found them far superior to all the other young men. None were a match for Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.”

  3. 20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

Following God’s plan is ten times better than doing things the way the world does them. I’m sure it would have been easy to give in and eat from the royal menu instead of just beans all the time, but doing it God’s way got them great favor not only with God, but with the worldly king as well.

  4. 8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

    A MADE UP MIND

Daniel had his mind made up he was not going to defile himself with the kings meat. If we would make up our mind, it does not matter what anyone else does we have made up our mind we are going to not defile ourselves with things we do not need. Daniel felt he knew what he should do and he was going to do this.
I wonder what would happen if we made up our mind I will not cross certain lines but dedicate the right things to God!!
Could we learn from this that it does not matter the situation (we are in) we still have a mind made up I am living for God!!!

  5. 17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

  6. 8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

9 Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

Wow!…and the Word says that they were only youths. Several thoughts run through my mind. How is it that at such young age a heart can be do fixed and made up to follow God’s plan and not defile himself? What is the difference between then and today? Can our youth be this made up in their minds and hearts? Can they have that same fire and passion to stand up for what’s right? To see the temptation right before their eyes and still say l; I choose Jesus! The only thing that comes to mind is that they have to have learned it from some one. The Word says,
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go:and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Fire is contagious and it consumes everything in its path. In order for our children and future generations to be souled out even in the midst of temptation, we have to be souled out! I had this thought the other day; a boss will push, direct, and give orders from a desk, a Leader will be the first one on the front line being the example. We all want someone to look up to. Who inspires you? And who are you inspiring? I’d like for one day when I have children to remember the way that they should go, not only by words but actions. That when they stand in front of life and it’s deceitful wonders, that the Lord my God is an awesome wonder, and none like Him in all this earth.

  7. Vs 8 God can and will protect his people if we purpose in our heart to not become defiled by this world. We must purpose in our heart to love and serve only him.

  8. Obedience

Daniel knew he did not want to defile himself with such food from the king but he did not rebel or conned to go against him. He submitted with respect and humbly ask permission. He just convinced them to try for 10 day his way, for that God gave him favor. He grew in knowledge, wisdom, as well as physically. There is a right way to go about it and the wrong way to go about disagreements. Daniel did it the right way. He did not only presented a problem but came out with a solution. There is a phrase that I have never liked “its better to ask forgiveness than permission” I prefer to ask permission than forgiveness. Don’t get me wrong if I wronged anyone I do ask forgiveness, but in that phrase, I prefer to avoid conflict and just ask permission and go with blessings. Than go in rebellion and be cursed. May we all learn that submission is a wonderful thing that keeps us safe, blessed, and highly favored.

  9. The Favor of God

What a testimony! Gods ways are above our ways. When we have the favor of God on our lives, great things will happen. To think that the King saw that the 4 children were thought to be 10x wiser than the smartest people there. Now we must also realize that this was during a time when they were suppose to be in captivity. What a testiment to the awesome power of God. When we listen and do what God says to do. There will be great blessings that come about. Be encouraged and be blessed.

  10. SELF DISCIPLINE = FAVOR

Frequently we attempt to find favor with people by doing what they want us to do, by being in agreement with them or by supporting their program. However we learn from Daniel a FAITH driven way to gain FAVOR called SELF DISCIPLINE.

Daniel disciplined himself to refrain from eating meat offered to idols and partaking in the rituals of idolatry the Babylonians practiced. Choosing to FEAR GOD instead of man. GOD Blessed HIS act of FAITH.

Through the trial or testing process; GOD proved himself faithful to his servant.

    The END Result

    NLT
17 God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams.

18 When the training period ordered by the king was completed, the chief of staff brought all the young men to King Nebuchadnezzar. 19 The king talked with them, and no one impressed him as much as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the royal service. 20 Whenever the king consulted them in any matter requiring wisdom and balanced judgment, he found them ten times more capable than any of the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.

Choose FAITH; HONOR GOD; Fear GOD not man; Find favor.

    iPraise

  11. iLove to eat the Word

4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

Children like these are in high demand today too! Lord, l pray for a revival of wisdom in a world of “political correctness.” We need some young men and women to step up to the plate and be used of God like never before.

  12. Interesting 1-7 The name changes are a good example of attempted “brainwashing.” All four young men had good Hebrew names that reflected their godly heritage. They were given, instead Babylonian names that denoted praise of Babylonian gods. Daniel (“God is my judgde”) was changed to Belteshazzar (Bel Will Protect), Hananiah(“God is Gracious”) to Shadrach (Inspiration of the Sun”), Mishael (“God is Without Equal”) to Meshach (“Belonging to Aku”),and Azariah (“The Lord is My Helper”) to Abednego (“Servant of Nego”). Their new names were intended to give them a Babylonian , rather than a Hebrew, identification. The rest of the book shows that, although the Babylonians could change the young men’s names, they could not change their character.

1:15 The success of Daniel’s plan was due more to the sovereignty of God in blessing his spiritual commitment than it was to the diet. Certain kinds of meat were not prohibited to the Jews, but a vegetarian diet in this case may have been inherently superior to the king’s table.

  13. 8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Daniels decision was made with his heart. His most inner being. He didn’t just profess with his mouth but rather he set his entirety on this decision. God knows our hearts. And because Daniel made the decision to follow Gods commands despite his circumstances, God blessed him. When we stand for God, God will stand for us.

  14. 15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.

Doing things God’s way will always show it’s benefits- especially over time. We may not always understand the why, but with simple obedience we pave the way for blessings of health, wisdom, finances and more!

  15. These chosen men purposed in their heart, although they were chosen for service to the natural king, they was not going to sell out to the traditions of the worldly king and compromise their heart/soul conditions of the Heavenly King.

Too many times we just tend to give in to the things/traditions of the world to be in the “in” crowd, instead of standing for what we have been taught and know is right in the sight of the Lord. If we will make a stand for God, God will prove Himself faithful and just in our lives.

  16. Now God made Daniel to find favor, compassion, and loving-kindness with the chief of the eunuchs. (Daniel 1:9 AMP)

Thankful for the favor of the Lord upon POFW!

When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. (Proverbs 16:7 AMP)

  17. 19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

When we allow God to lead us, God will allow you to find favor in those around you. The king went to these four for counsel because gave them the wisdom to give him a wise answer. This is why it is important to stay connected with God, he will truly lead you in all things.

  18. “Daniel purposed in his heart”

8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Sometimes we try to make accountability and faithfulness to God hard but it just takes for us to be like Daniel and purpose in our hearts to be accountable and faithful.

If we stay faithful to the King of Kings those around us will see that we are not like others.

  19. -3-5
Nebuchaadnezzars intent to find the best man in his far-flung empire to administer it rather than to reserve such post for ethnic Babylonians is only one example of his shrewd and enlightened goverment.

  20. The favor of God

15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.

When we have God’s favor in our lives we are not defiled by the things of this world. Therefore, whatever we put our minds too, we will excel more than our wicked counterparts. This world is ours for the taking. The land is exceedingly good. Let’s seize life emotionally, physically, financially, and spiritually. God is with us!!

  21. In every matter of wisdom and insight the king asked them about, he found them to be ten times better than any of the magicians and astrologers that were in his entire empire. -Daniel 1:20

That’s what my God can do!! He’ll take the best that the world can offer and just give something that’s significantly better!

    What a great God!

  22. Vs. 8, “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.”

Daniel had a resolution, an aim, a plan in his heart that he was not going to make himself filthy or corrupt with the king’s meat or drink.

As we live in this world, we too must purpose, have a resolution, an aim, a plan in our heart not to make ourselves filthy or corrupt with the things of this world. We must purpose in our hearts to live for Jesus, no matter what others say, think, or how they act.

Phil. 2:12b says, “…… work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”

    It’s a Heart Thing!

  23. The power of a made up mind

8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Life can come at us unexpectedly. Temptation can sneak up out of nowhere, and begin to allure us toward the dark corridor of sin. They say the greatest care is preventive.

Don’t pay the money to have the car repaired. Instead keep a regular check on the fluids, and tune ups.

When we do this in the spirit we keep ourselves from whatever enticement may come up.

I already know what lines I will not cross. These standards help my family to lay down any weight and sin that doth so easily beset.

A made up mind has rehearsed the no, and doesn’t flinch when the question rises.

1 Peter 3:15 says to be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is within you

2 Timothy 4:2 says preach the word; be instant in season, out of season

Daniel easily told the Prince of the Eunuchs No! because he had settled that in his mind long ago.

  24. I’m so thankful for a God who speaks to those in the time of need. Blessed to have leaders and parents that listen to His voice and obeys Him!! Thank you Jesus for your many blessings!!

  25. 8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Even in a time of great temptation Daniel chose to set himself apart. It obviously would be tempting to anyone to eat the choice things of the king, but Daniel knew that his God had called him to be separate.

16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

In the end it all payed off. Daniel was right to stick by his convictions. Sticking to your convictions will prove itself to be more beneficiary than confirming to what is popular. The times that you have to make decisions based in your convictions is what showed people your true character. If they see consultancy in your conviction whether they agree with it or not it will prove to be a trust builder.

  26. 4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

The enemy of our soul would love to take you into captivity. He desires to take the abilities that God has given to you and use it for his purpose. He knows that he can’t stand before the King any longer and wants to steal those who stand before the King of King.

Be strong and of a good courage! Don’t speak the language of this worlld and live. But the things that pertains unto life.

  27. 20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
    Ten times the anointing…
The people of God in this chapter and always in life have a anointing upon them that is ten times greater than that if the world. Even though the world ate all the best food and had all the best accommodations the church still came through bigger, better, and stronger. No matter what it looks like in the world today it pays to live for God and stay in the church!!

  28. God is a jealous God

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. (Daniel 1:8, 17 KJV)

In today’s passage it talks about not defiling yourself. See the people who took Daniel and his friends were of this world and they were caught up with the idols of this world. They purposes in their hearts to worship things other than God. So Daniel purposes to only serve God and not to eat the meats that the king could give to the idols. Maybe the cattle was even raised as a purpose of the idols, I don’t really know. I just makes sense that out of praise, Judah, there is a refusal to partake if things of idols. — then WOW look at Daniel’s blessing because he refused to eat tainted meat. God truly did bless him because of his commitment to The Lord.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 KJV)
Even these things worked for GOOD!

  29. God wants nothing more than the best, he sees everthing and knows our intentions. Lord I want to serve you now and forever.

Lord use me to do your will. Pour your blessings upon my family and church family. I praise your Holy name.

  30. From Hostages To Princes

King Neb enlists Ashpenaz, principal of the royal academy, to instruct and transform promising young Jewish boys into cultured Babylonian princes. Daniel and his three friends excel above all the others (vs19). King Neb questions them, and they have answers that are far better than anything the king can get from the most respected “magicians and enchanters” (vs20) in his kingdom- ten times better in fact. What the king doesn’t know, however, is that the God of Israel is the One who gives these young men all their knowledge and wisdom. Future events will, however, reveal this truth to him.

Luke 1: 52 He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble.

  31. The Process, Pt II

6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah

Even the four Hebrew boys, who were chosen and had the good qualities listed in v4, had to submit to a preparation process. Before they saw the King, they had to be changed from the inside out. In our walk with God, it is the King’s provision of His Word and Spirit (meat and wine) that work in us to transform us. We all start out somewhere, and we may already have good qualities, but none are exempt from the process of inside-out transformation before they could come before the King.

    Isaiah 64:6-8
6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. 7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities. 8 But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

    John 1:12-13
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

We are helpless but not hopeless; our frailty is overtaken by God, who came to us with salvation and gives us the power to become His children. We may have good qualities, but it is only by the transforming power of God in His process that we can not simply possess good qualities but *become* who we are to be.

    1 John 4:19
We love him, because he first loved us.

  32. In one of the toughest times in Daniel’s life, is when God proved himself to be the provider for him and his chosen people who follow him. Daniel and his friends had just been dragged from their homeland Israeli and pretty much thrown under the rule of another country.

But despite the fact everyone tried to get him to conform to the world, Daniel refused to budge on his beliefs and kept faithful to God and believed in his word. That if he were to follow him in everything that he did that God would bless him and he did exactly that.

In what was probably the lowest point in his life, God brought them up out of that and brought them into a position of power and influence so they could help change the kingdom for the glory of God. It shows if we keep faithful to God and believe in his word he will do great things in our lives.
