Amos 6

1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

2 Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?

3 Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;

4 That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;

5 That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;

6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

7 Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive, and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.

8 The Lord God hath sworn by himself, saith the Lord the God of hosts, I abhor the excellency of Jacob, and hate his palaces: therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein.

9 And it shall come to pass, if there remain ten men in one house, that they shall die.

10 And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of theLord.

11 For, behold, the Lord commandeth, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.

12 Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:

13 Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?

14 But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the Lord the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.

  1. 2 Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:

13 Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?

14 But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the Lord the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.

  2. Amos 6:1-2 MSG
Woe to you who think you live on easy street in Zion, who think Mount Samaria is the good life. You assume you’re at the top of the heap, voted the number-one best place to live. Well, wake up and look around. Get off your pedestal. Take a look at Calneh. Go and visit Great Hamath. Look in on Gath of the Philistines. Doesn’t that take you off your high horse? Compared to them, you’re not much, are you?

  3. Nothing good left

2 Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:

Hemlock the common ground or dwarf hemlock, a bitter, poisonous plant. The Hebrew rosh is rendered “hemlock” in two passages, ( Hosea 10:4 ; Amos 6:12 ) but elsewhere “gall.” [GALL] (It is possible that the plant is rather the poppy than an hemlock. –Cook.)

  4. 1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

There is two (2) things here I see that reminds of our day and the warning of our time.
    1. Being at ease in Zion is woe to us, trouble if we relax to early. We shall reap in due season if we faint not. This means never give up to early. If we fail the first, second, or even third time we should go back and keep trying, keep working . We know there is no hope in quiting, so the answer is to stay at it. I know a lot of times we give up on people too early, when they are trying to change their lives. People actually come to God with a lot of baggage and need a lot of time to get straitened out. We should always encourage them to come to church and pray at the altar . Prayer is their only hope, it will help them get closer to God and as we get closer to God we will see more baggage falling off.
    2. Trusting in the wrong places or people. These people were trusting in Samaria. Samaria want help you because it can’t help you. We should always put our trust in God. It does not matter what the situation, we should depend On God for the answer. Jesus has everything we need We need to depend on him for all our needs.
The Plamist David said some trust in horses , some trust in chariots, but I put my trust in the name of The Lord . We should always remember from which our help will come.
Praise God let’s move forward and allow God to bless us!!

  5. 11 For, behold, the Lord commandeth, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.

  6. In reading this chapter this morning, it makes me think “never stop”. Some may say well our church is flourishing, its growing; so, now we can slow down or sit back. This is where “unity” must come in and we have to keep on going. There are so many more to reach in this city, in this region and in this world. I pray that the Lord impart that same vision and desire that our Pastors have to each and everyone of us at POFW. Help us oh Lord to rise up to the challenge and take it by force.

  7. What a horrible thought to not be able to call on the name of the Lord!

10 And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the Lord.

We heard last week about some of the issues in Israel where the name of Jesus can really cause issues for those who speak his name. What a privileged life we live here in the US. However, without real persecution there are still some who only whisper the name of Jesus for fear of what someone will think of us. “Oh, he is one of those religious nuts!” AMEN! I am a nut! As Pastor proclaims, I have lost my mind. I am completely sold out for my Lord and my Savior, The Mighty King, The Prince of Peace, Almighty God, Alpha and Omega, The Beginning and The End!

  8. thank you Lord for always being there with us through out the days for being our refugee and giving us strength when we had none
so amazing Lord we worship and praise you

  9. 1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
Now is not the time to take it easy, there is a lot of work yo be done. There are a lot of souls to reach .We must be exsamples to the new ones coming in , if they see us working for the church then they would decide this is what I am suppose to do too. But if we are being lazy and watching someone else do all the work they will be inclined to do the same.
Someone is watching our life ,so be the best you can be in the kingdom of God,and someone will follow in your footsteps!!!

  10. Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came! (Amos 6:1 KJV)

Now is not a time to get comfortable or complacent.

    Romans 13:11
And that, knowing the time, that now [it is] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed.

No one is going to win souls for us. No one is going to help us fight evil. The enemy is not going to hand over the victory.

    It’s time to fight!

12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

Paul is telling us that it won’t be easy. But it will be worth it.

  11. GET UP AND DO GODS WORK

1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

There are too many people in Zion (The Church) who live Spirirually on the WORK (prayer, fasting, commitments and devotions) of others. A strong Spirit led apostolic church is a convenient place to become complacent with the status quo of just being in the church. It is obvious here that pride and an arrogant attitude was dwelling in the people and it must have been evident that Israel had lost their passion, fervor and tenacity to love and serve GOD.

    1. What sorrow awaits you who lounge in luxury in Jerusalem,[a]
and you who feel secure in Samaria!
You are famous and popular in Israel,
and people go to you for help. NLT

The word WOE – 1945. ywøh howy, hoh´ee; (akin to 188); oh!:—ah, alas, ho, O, woe.
    188. ywøa }owy, o´-ee; (in the sense of crying out after); lamentation; also interjectionally Oh!:—alas, woe.

lam·en·ta·tion noun \ˌla-mən-ˈtā-shən\: an expression of great sorrow or deep sadness

We must faithfully, honestly and consistently look at and examine our lives to see that we are not fallen into this group of the cursed by GOD. Idleness, complacency and laziness, whether it be by seductive deception or proud rebellion is NOT acceptable to or by GOD.

  12. Israel was at the place where nothing moved them. They were self righteous and arrogant and of a prideful, haughty spirit.

    Proverbs 16:18
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

We must be careful to not allow pride, arrogance, self righteousness to infiltrate our hearts. We are nothing without the spirit of God, everything else is just form and fashion. We must continue to keep God first and foremost on the throne of our heart that we don’t become cold, calloused and fall into the same trap as the Israelites have done.

  13. 1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

It may be easy to get complacent at church when everything seems to be going well but that doesn’t mean we should. The call of God is to go, not relax or sit back. We need to keep pushing forward! I’ve heard it said several times that the kingdom of God is like a mountain, you are either pushing forward and going up or you are sliding backwards and going down. There is no place to just stay the same.

  14. Vs 1 It is not tome to take it easy. Satan is at work each and every day killing, stealing and destroying. The fields are ripe to harvest.
Vs 3 The end is near and we must keep ourselves ready and preach the word to everyone we meet.

  15. 6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

Just as Esther plead for her people so we need to plead for our nation. Not our country, but the one God apostolic nation.

When our brothers and sisters are in trouble we need to cry out. When there are those who have grown cold in God they need our prayers. When there is an attraction toward entertainment more than soul winning we need to cry for our people.

The word says “if my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways and seek my face then I will heal their land”

I believe God wants us to pray for our nation and heal our land.

  16. iLove to eat the Word

13 Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?

We must always give God the Glory. Many times we rejoice in our own strength and our own ability, but we should always give God the glory. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords is the One who gave us breath and he deserves the highest praise.

  17. 13 Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?

14 But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the Lord the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.

Pride will bring you down. God does not like a proud spirit and every proud spirit will be brought down before the presence of the almighty God. We must stay humble and remember that when we abase ourselves God will lift us up. Let us rise with humility.

  18. I can’t imagine not being able to call on the one name who can bring me out of anything! Time and time again God has shown up and shown out! I look forward to the day I can be with Him and worship all day long!

  19. 1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
2 Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?
    3 Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;

To think that they have nothing to achieve within themselves or for the kingdom is arrogance & pride. Jesus taught the parable of the rich fool in Luke 12: 16-21 who was rich in treasure for himself but rich in God: after he had built bigger barns to hold his wealth he decided to take his ease but his soul was required of him. He wasn’t prepared for that & so what did he gain? Forget gaining things of this world & gain everything in Him.

  20. v1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

We should remember that we are to work in the field of the LORD, and not in our own little kingdoms.
HE has given each of us specific abilities with which to accomplish HIS WORK .
GOD WILL instruct and guide us if we place out confidence in HIM.
GOD WILL reward us for our faithfulness and HE will never forget what we have done for HIS cause.
THE LORD will accept nothing but our very best.

  21. At Ease in Zion
Amos 6:4-7 Chant to the sound of the viol….like David: They displayed a genius and creativity similar to that of King David, but with one great difference : David’s music was inspired by God and directed man’s heart to praise Him; their music turned man’s heart away from God to their own lusts.

    Amos 6:5 That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;
Isaiah 5:12 And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the Lord, neither consider the operation of his hands.

  22. 8. The Lord GOD hath sworn by himself, saith the LORD the God of hosts, I abhor the excellency of Ja’-cob, and hate his palaces: therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein. 9. And it shall come to pass, if there remain ten men in one house, that they shall die. The City is delivered up!!!!!! The LORD abhors the Pride of Israel.

  23. The Lord commands us to follow him and live a righteous life. Israel wasn’t living right they were sinning and glorifying self. They left God out of their lives because it was easier to please the flesh and not God. The Lord blesses those that honor him, pride destroys lives but God can turn it all around if we turn to him.

  24. 13 And you brag about your conquest of Lo-debar. You boast, “Didn’t we take Karnaim by our own strength?” (NLT)

We must not become so prideful that we take the credit for what God has done for us. He deserves all the glory because it’s through Him that we have true victory.

  25. 3 Ye that put far the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;

This is our generation. We push away every thought of trouble, trial, or coming disaster rather than changing our ways, and we only bring the day of judgement closer.

  26. 1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

2 Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?

  27. In this scripture, you can see what is to be expected when you let your guard down and take everything at ease. You don’t know the day nor the hour of your Lord’s return. “Be Busy”…………………be about the Father’s business.

1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

    “Get Ready, Get Busy”……………………………………….

  28. BE Family

1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

    1 Corinthians 12:12
For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

It is a sad thing when a body turns on itself. Imagine what would happen if you got cut and your blood decided it didn’t want to clot? You could easily bleed to death. Or what if the blood clotted but your body decided it didn’t care about fighting and neutralizing the pathogens that came in with the cut? You could get an infection and die.

But in today’s chapter, this sort of thing is described as the people of God show a lack of care for one another. We must be our brother’s keeper, whether naturally or spiritually. The moment we say “well, someone else will take care of that, they’re not my problem” is the moment we can see the enemy gaining ground. If God let us see it, we better believe He’s holding us responsible to take it to prayer in the very least.

We are called to BE Church, which means we are called to BE Family not just in title but lifestyle.

  29. You push away every thought of coming disaster, but your actions only bring the day of judgment closer. How terrible for you who sprawl on ivory beds and lounge on your couches, eating the meat of tender lambs from the flock and of choice calves fattened in the stall. “O people of Israel, I am about to bring an enemy nation against you,” says the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies. “They will oppress you throughout your land— from Lebo-hamath in the north to the Arabah Valley in the south.” (Amos 6:3, 4, 14 NLT)

  30. From the message version
Woe to you who are rushing headlong to disaster! Catastrophe is just around the corner! Woe to those who live in luxury and expect everyone else to serve them! Woe to those who live only for today, indifferent to the fate of others! Woe to the playboys, the playgirls, who think life is a party held just for them! Woe to those addicted to feeling good—life without pain! those obsessed with looking good—life without wrinkles! They could not care less about their country going to ruin. (Amos 6:3-6 MSG)

During prayer God reminded how people are dying daily, how the lost are looking for help, how some do not even know they have died…one may ask died? Yes lost, hope, and the desire to fight for life physical, emotional, spiritual… Just last night at work, a coworker mentioned how she had been feeling depressed. This is some one who I had invited to church and came once…now the person approaches me and says that she hasn’t been feeling so well and meant to ask me about church again. Now from one time to this current one, one would say its been a long time, but we are called to work. The Lord blesses those that work. We should be careful when the Lord starts pouring out the blessings that we forget not why we are here and where God’s heart is. I remember it took me 3 years to take a friend to church, but finally came. It took work. It took looking around just in my city, and asking the Lord to give me His heart for those that are lost. All we have to do us travel within our city from east to west, north to south, and see the need, the desperate crying of the Lost. The fields are ready and shall reap, but we must keep on working…. If we faint not, the phrase says it all. It will be hard work. It will be wide to incorporate input prayers the theme of imagine creatively and that the Lord will give us creative new ways to reach our community, our coworkers, the ones that provide a service… I’ve experienced interesting conversations at work with total strangers that are customers, just responding ” I am blessed!” when I’m asked how am I? They are reminded that there is a God who blesses, a God who cares.
It’s to pray, to fast, to seek..work for God; His heart is in reaching the lost.

  31. 1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

It’s a sad day when the people of God become complacent in the church and trust more in the cities they have built in what they thought where safe places. You can not hide from God.

I feel like David in thee oh Lord do I put my trust.

  32. This chapter illustrates security. Their care was on self and not God (Jesus), and therefore they were not concerned with anything else. There is only true security in God, as such belief elsewise is unwise; “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape”. What a mighty God we serve! God bless Jerusalem, and may the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  33. Vs.13, “Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?”
Vs.14, “But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the LORD the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.”

They relied on themselves and trusted in their own strength, but God is about ready to show them just how powerless they are compared to His Great Power.

This brought Galatians 6:3 to mind. It says, “For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.”

If we think we can do things on our own or by our own power, we are sadly deceiving ourselves. We can do nothing on our own. We NEED JESUS!

Jesus said in John 15:5, “I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

  34. 1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
time for the church to arrive in awake out of sleep! to stand up and be on the offense of instead of on the defensive. As I learned during the all night prayer meeting the church fight against the world not the world against the church!

  35. 14 But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the Lord the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.

The tragedy of a turned heart.

What a day that must have been. To know that you are chosen and yet turn away from the presence of God. We must pray for the backslider to come home and gain healing. It is hard to win back a wounded soul. Just as if you beat on an animal , it will flee from you. Although the church does not beat anyone. They feel as though they have been beaten. The reminder of pain from what was continually played in the mind. It is hard for that person to trust again. But they must be reached. With an open hand, and gentle voice the Master calls, come.

  36. Amos 6

1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

Our trust and confidence should only be in The Lord of Host! The high things of this world will bring you low. But if you humble yourself under the mighty hand of God you will be exalted.

  37. How terrible for you who sprawl on ivory beds and lounge on your couches, eating the meat of tender lambs from the flock and of choice calves fattened in the stall. You sing trivial songs to the sound of the harp and fancy yourselves to be great musicians like David. You drink wine by the bowlful and perfume yourselves with fragrant lotions. You care nothing about the ruin of your nation. Therefore, you will be the first to be led away as captives. Suddenly, all your parties will end. (Amos 6:4-7 NLT)

    Selfishness

If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it. (Luke 17:33 NLT)

  38. 1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

Woe to thoE whose guy us here. We are sad that they had their own house that came. Their got their treasures here
    S

  39. Unlawful music.

    Amos 6:5
    that sing idle songs to the sound of the viol; that invent for themselves instruments of music, like David;

The people had built instruments to worship idols. This reference is not to forbid music in church. Music is supposed to be in church and it is allowed in heaven. The problem is the motive behind music.

Music has influence. Kids even rock to the beat of the drums. If we have music that glorifies idols or self then it is idol music and vain. Musics original intent was to worship God. If there are high places in our lives that give glory to another other than Jesus, then we have some idols to tear down.

  40. 12 Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:

In our life there is many paths that we can take and choose to follow, wherever we choose to go in our life tells us how our life is gonna end up. Whatever path we choose to take, gives us whatever obstacles we have to get through.

If you choose a clear path that God has already been craved out for you and goes to where you need to be, then God will bless you for it. But if you choose to go off the beaten trail and decide to crave your own path through the wilderness, then you have to walk through whatever the wilderness has to throw out you.

When you become in tune with God and his plan for your life, it helps develop you good judgment in telling which path you need to follow in your life. Don’t throw away that good judgment just to go your own patth because you’re not happy with the path God has laid out for you.

God can’t help you from the consequences of your decision which I believe this scripture also tells here. People wonder why bad things happen, or why there is evil in the world. But if you choose to go down the path of sin, then these bad things are what you’re gonna reap from it. God can’t change a person’s free will to choose what they wanna do and who they want to believe in, we lost that choose when Adam and Eve disobeyed the Lord in the garden.

But that doesn’t mean things have to be the same way with us, Jesus died for us on the cross so that way we would have a path to heaven, all we have to do is trust our spiritual senses that God has given unto us and follow in the footsteps of Christ.

Sure there will be trials and tribulations that we will have to go through in our life even we do follow the path of God, he didn’t promise that it would be easy for us. It’s like hiking a trail through the mountains, if don’t expect to encounter some dangerous wildlife or surprises along the way, then it’s gonna take you by surprise. But God gives us the power to endure through these things and as long as we stay on his trail, we can go up to heaven and confidently tell him that we lived our life for him.

Psalms 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life in thy presence is fulness of joy, at thy right hand there are pleasures evermore.

Hebrews 12:13 And make straight paths for your feet lest that which is lame be turned out of the way but let it rather be healed.

  41. Complacency

The Israelites eat, drink, and make merry, and God is angry- not because of their prosperity but because they are set on satisfying themselves rather than seeking God for satisfaction. Look closely at the verbs listed in Amos 6:3-7. They show complacency at its finest. The people are lying in beds of ivory and dining on the finest of foods when really, God says, they should be grieving over the state of their nation (Am 6:6).

Complacency is not confined to that time or people. In good times, smugness and pride can creep in, and people forget God. Yet, God warns, the “feasting and lounging will end.” (Am 6:7). God’s favor will then be extended only to those who have learned to dine on his love and rest in his mercy.

  42. You sing trivial songs to the sound of the harp and fancy yourselves to be great musicians like David. (Amos 6:5 NLT)

The praise team can not sing songs of victory and yet still be bound. We need to be leaders fasting, praying and seeking His word to lead by example. Let’s break things! Leaders are warriors and we need to break down the bonds so the word can reach not just our hearts but every person that walks into the church. We can’t get cocky/lazy about worship! We have a city to reach!!!
