Amos 8

1 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit.

2 And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the Lord unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.

3 And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord God: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.

4 Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,

5 Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?

6 That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat?

7 The Lord hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

8 Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.

9 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:

10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

13 In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.

14 They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, Thy god, O Dan, liveth; and, The manner of Beersheba liveth; even they shall fall, and never rise up again.

  1. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

This does not say there were no Prophets, but the people would not hear, better said listen. I know in my life time I saw a lot of people who could look you in the eye, but never heard a word you said. As a matter of fact in working with people everyday I tell them things and immediately see they wasn’t listening to what I said because strait way they went on like I had said nothing. They did right the opposite of what I said.
God would have labeled them rebellious and wild donkey’s going about doing their own thing. The problem of this day was hearing the word’s of The Lord, of which I am convinced that there is Also a famine of our day for hearing the Word. Look at the population of Tarrant county and see how many are filled with the Holy Ghost. My guess is less than 1% are filled, so do the math there is still a famine in the land. Not that everybody does not hear just most people does not hear .
These people wander around every where from sea to sea, north to the East trying to find the Word of The Lord. Are we truly seeking his word and his way or trying to find a way to get God to accept us the way we are rather than change our ways.
We need to sharpen our hearing skills and give us the ability to hear what is God saying to us.
He that hath ears to hear let him hear, use your ears for what they were intended for hearing. We think the best use Is to hold our glasses, but that is second use the first is to hear what God is saying to the church.
Now POFW let us listen to the Pastor/ any Man Of God that is placed in the pulpit to deliver the Word. Where we can see what God can do for us let’s move forward!!!!

  2. 4 Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,

Nothing gets past God. We are never so cunning that The Lord doesn’t notice. He is never caught unaware, or off guard.

He asks for righteous balances. A life of purity and no deceit.

Honesty is the best policy. It doesn’t just help people, it satisfies God.

When we deal fair with others he deals fair with us. If we refuse to trick and deceive then we will avoid much deception ourselves.

  3. a day of judgment is coming. Repentance should be done before it is too late. God gives us our chance to repent but there will come a time when he will not listen if we do not change.

  4. 9 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:

I wondered how people back then could refuse to acknowledge and worship the God that could control the sun until I realized that people today still refuse to acknowledge that He even created the sun. He still has the power to control it and is still worthy of all worship and praise!

  5. Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit.

2 And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the Lord unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.

3 And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord God: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.
just as the day of the LORD was then so is it now thank you GOD for giving your life for me so even the dogs would have a way out

  6. ILove to eat the Word

The day is coming there will be a famine of hearing the words of God.

I know it might seem hard to believe that there will be a famine of hearing the Word of The Lord with the good preaching we’re accustomed to hearing at POFW, but the truth of the matter is there’s more to just hearing the Word, but there’s doing it. A person can hear with the natural ear but can be deaf in the spiritual realm.

That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. (Mark 4:12 KJV)
Let’s repent and listen to the Word of God and be changed.

  7. Verse 11 is sobering. Are we not in a famine of hearing the words of the Lord right now? It highlights how important it is for us to hide God’s word in our hearts.

  8. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:
Lord I never want to lose the word

  9. Ran too far

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

Here we are not talking about the one that don’t want the word of God. It is speaking about the one that is seeking His word; but can not find it. So I ask myself, why they can not find it? Did they ran too far away from Him? Or is it no longer available? May be man has missed used it for so long or has distorted so much that the Truth can not be found. Whatever the case may be the word says “they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.” I love to blog everyday, could not begin my day without it. My grandmother never learn to read or write, but she will have the kids read the bible to her to the point that she hid the word in her heart and could recite the bible. We need to hide His word in our heart in such way that when the moment comes and people are searching but not finding His word, we can sit and recite it for ALL TO HEAR THE TRUTH. So read the word, blog the word, learn the word, devour the word, and hide it in your heart where no one can take it away.

  10. 11 “The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread or water but of hearing the words of the Lord.
12 People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from border to border searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it.
13 Beautiful girls and strong young men will grow faint in that day, thirsting for the Lord’s word. (NLT)

Will it really take the Lord’s silence just to get our attention? We need to have a hunger for God and His word. I’ve heard before and see that it’s not much of coincidence – the words ‘silent’ and ‘listen’ are spelled with the same letters. Sometimes we just need to quit blabbing about the things of this world and just sit and silently listen to what God has to speak to us.

  11. Listening is key in any relationship.
A professor and student: you don’t listen to his lecture, you fail the test.
A husband and wife: you don’t listen to his apology, you hold a grudge.
God and His children: we don’t listen to His voice, we’re lost.
Listening and repentance go hand in hand. When you listen to what God has to say we should immediately do a 360 repentance.

  12. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

Don’t take for granted the word of God. When God speaks we should listen and listen wholly, no matter the means it comes through ( preaching, bible reading). One day the right to have all that may be taken from us, what lengths would we take to seek out the word from God?
It’ll be one thing when man tries to remove God but when God removes himself there will be no room left for complacency. Souls will be left dry and barren. Seek out The Lord while there is still time.

  13. v 7The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

Which brings to my mind Psalms 94:9
It inspires our faith to bring our needs to HIM. It also reminds us of the LORD’S
judgments concerning all actions that HE observes.
From GODS point of view there are no big sins as opposed to little sins.
    GOD hates all sins!
” There to him that kmoweth to do good, and forth it not, to him it is sin”
    James 4:17

Although GOD LOVES the sinner HIS intolerance of sin forces a person to choose between sin and salvation between hell and heaven .
We should choose everlasting life through obedience to HIS plan for our redemption .

    • Psalm 94:9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?

Proverbs 24:12. If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his working?

  14. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

Thank you Jesus we know the truth. We can hear the Word of The Lord. We must hide Gods word in our hearts, so when the day comes that we will no longer have a physical bible to read. His return in nearer every day.

  15. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

This is why we must hide the word of God in our heart, so that it is so inbread in us that we would not sin against the Lord, but also that we would have the word to use and pray in every situation. There is power in the living breathing word of God, and when it is spoken in faith believing it shall come to pass.

  16. 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

We need to get an unique chance thirst for the word of The Lord while we have the chance. We are in a great time that the word is flowing freely through great men of God and the bible is readily available on thousands of websites and hundreds of translations. We are truly in the days of abundance. Reap while the harvest of the word is available and put it in the storehouse of your heart that when you hunger it will be satisfying and quench your hunger. Let it overflow the storehouse that you may be able to feed the hungry around you.

  17. VEHEMENT HUNGER

A famine is a lack or absence of something valuable or necessary or “a ravenous appetite”.

The most frequently and highest recommended diet is to eat 5 – 6 times a day. I have attempted this a few times and found that I never really got hungry, but it seems to be the most health way to eat.

When we consider the judgement of GOD on Israel, we must remember and maintain that HE is had already attempted to starve them in the natural and they still refused to respond and recognize HIM. The next step is to starve them spiritually.

We must remember and consider that at any time GOD could withhold HIS spirit and presence from any person or group of people. It is my hope and desire to maintain an attitude of VEHEMENT HUNGER for GOD, his presence and HIS WORD.

The old saying is that “you don’t realize how much you need something until it is gone”. I hope to carefully consider when and how much I NEED a WORD from GOD everyday and how thankful I am that HE speaks to me daily through this POFW Blog and through HIS HOLY SPIRIT.

This process of famine is aborted by our obedience to HIS WORD given NOW.

  18. A Basket of Summer Fruit
Amos 8:1:14 The vision of the summer fruit shows that Israel is ripe for judgment, which will come very soon.

8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the
    Lord:
I Samuel 3:1 And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

  19. 2 And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the Lord unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.

The day God stops working through us and moving in our services is the day life would not be worth living.

  20. Not the type of fast you’d ever want to experience. No longer hearing the word, “Remember”, Jesus said he would never leave us nor forsake us. He is the “Word” made flesh, bread of life. Never he said! “New Covenant”………better promises.

    “Keep the Faith”………………………………….

  21. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:
The word of God is preached over and over at our church, our pastor and other great men of God that Bro. Watts brings to the church, but are we all really listening to all that is preached?? You can have a feast sitting on the table but if no one eats any thing they will still leave hungry. Was it the one who prepared it at fault? I think not !! When the word is delivered to us we must take heed and obey!!

  22. This chapter illustrates separation. Their actions would be costly; “they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it”. There can be nothing more terrifying, which is why one must seek the Lord (Jesus); “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon”. What a mighty God we serve! God bless Jerusalem and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  23. Vs.11, “Behold the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:”
Vs.12, “And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.”

God has been taken out of so many things in our society today. I often wonder if one day even the Word of God may be taken from us. What saddens me is to know that their are “christians” out there today who do not open the “good book” the BIBLE and read it, nor do they even bring it to church any more. I remember my former pastor back in Illinios asking one time, “How dusty is your Bible?” In other words, he wanted to know how often we picked it up and read it or did we just leave it on a shelf to get dusty.

    Everyday – – –
We need to READ the word of God.
We need to SPEAK the word of God.
We need to LIVE the word of God.
We need to HIDE the word of God in our heart.
We need to TREASURE the word of God.

2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

  24. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

In the middle of the noise can our ears be in tune to what the Spirit is saying? I pray that I get a hunger for His word that I may recognize His voice and His tones.

  25. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

Does it seem like when you tell your friends about God, or the things you do at church, does it seem to hit a wall? Like they either don’t understand or they push it away cause they seem to not want to hear about it?

Sometimes looks can be deceiving, this can be another such a case. For in mentions in verse 12 that they are seeking the word of God, but yet they cannot find it. It’s not that they don’t wanna hear about… but it’s more like a spiritual presence is clouding their spiritual senses, making them see through a worldly perspective, while at the same time they are searching for answers to their questions when it’s really right in front of them.

Don’t give up on people who don’t seem to want anything to do with the message you’re trying to give them, God is speaking to their hearts, but it’s not only a word that they need to hear, but pray and fasting to break spiritual dark cloud that’s hanging over them.

Once the veil is lifted from their eyes, they’ll be able to hear and perceive the words of God more and you’ll find things to be easier to reach them to bring them back to their heavenly father who wants them to come back home.

  26. 1 Then the Sovereign Lord showed me another vision. In it I saw a basket filled with ripe fruit. 2 “What do you see, Amos?” he asked. I replied, “A basket full of ripe fruit.” Then the Lord said, “Like this fruit, Israel is ripe for punishment! I will not delay their punishment again.

God tells us he is ready for punishment, for those that disobey. Are you ripe for punishment? Is your fruit (heart) riped for punishment or for a blessing? A ripe fruit, will bring forth a holy spirit and showcase the fruits of the Spirit.

  27. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

Matt5:6 Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are blessed, for they will be filled.

John 7:37 On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, he should come to Me, and drink! 38 The one who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.” 39 He said this about the Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus were going to receive the Spirit, for the Spirit had not yet been received, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

  28. People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from border to border searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it. (Amos 8:12 NLT)

What torture to search for the word of The Lord but won’t find it.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then will I teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted and return to You. (Psalm 51:10-13 AMP)

  29. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

We must the word in our hearts now.

  30. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

We must the word in our hearts.

  31. The penalty of no repentance.

    Amos 8:10
And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning for an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

Stubbornness and a love for sin leads to the same end. Judgment is bound to come. Their feasts (times of joy) become mourning and songs will become a grievance. I

  32. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

13 In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.
The need for a fresh word…
Everyday we need God to speak to us his fresh word. A Rhema word that can change our lives and our futures. We should never try to silence the word of our man of God in our lives because we need his words to give us direction for our lives.

  33. There were consequences to all the choices Israel made. The Lord tried to put sense in the sinners lives, but it turned out they worship other God’s and didn’t turn away from it. God is not willing to forgive Israel because they have crushed those in need and wiped out the poor. The Lord will not forget all the cruelty that Israel committed so he’s going to punish Israel by making them search for a message from God.

Lord I pray that every lost soul seeks you!

  34. Anxiously waiting

5 Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?
These people are waiting. Not for a time when they many seek Hod or come to God. No, they are waiting for a time when they may deceive others. Deceit happens when you trick someone into doing something. It is dishonest. We carefully need to examine ourselves. Sometimes the person we try to deceive is self. That is bad , especially when it works.
Dear God, help us to be honest with our brothers. Help us to be honest with ourselves. Jesus help us to seek after you. Amen

  35. Don’t Know What You’ve Got…

I think of the saying “you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone.” We can become calloused and indifferent to the blessings in front of us if we aren’t careful. God does so much for us that we take for granted every day. It is wise to spend time inventorying His goodness and blessing so we will not be guilty of not knowing (and appreciating) what we’ve got til it’s gone.

    Psalms 68:19
Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.

  36. This chapter makes me thankful that we have a church where the table of his Word is so abundant. Now whether you feast or starve spiritually is up to you. There are places right now in this world that they are not so fortunate as we heard about last week. We are a blessed people and must take advantage of the opportunity to storeup the Word in our hearts. Thank you Jesus for your Word.

  37. Dry, Cracked Souls

When we think of a famine, we imagine dry hillsides and cracked steambeds. Yet the famine Amos describes is of an entirely different sort- “a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.” (Amos 8:11). This is, in fact the sate the people bring in themselves. They don’t want to hear from the Lord and now the Lord will grant their wish. The refuse to listen to the prophets (God’s voice during that time), so God promises that prophecies will cease. The Israelites starve their souls by chasing after other false gods, as well as their own comfort and prosperity, so no hope of refreshement awaits on the horizon. Instead, God inflicts his greatest judgment on them- the absence of his presence. They will look for his peace and they will not find it. In hell their destined address since they refuse to repent and live sanctifed unto God, instead they will get a rude awakening of what hell might be like- where there will be no presence or word from God. Dry, cracked souls will die or flourish when surrendered to Jesus (John 7:37In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

  38. 11. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: 12. And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it. 13. In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.

  39. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

I pray I never ever get to a point where I can no longer here my Fathers words. Lord give us a hunger to hear you!!
