Zephaniah 2

1 Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired;

2 Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the Lord come upon you, before the day of the Lord’s anger come upon you.

3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.

4 For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall drive out Ashdod at the noon day, and Ekron shall be rooted up.

5 Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the Lord is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant.

6 And the sea coast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks.

7 And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening: for the Lord their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity.

8 I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border.

9 Therefore as I live, saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.

10 This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the Lord of hosts.

11 The Lord will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.

12 Ye Ethiopians also, ye shall be slain by my sword.

13 And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness.

14 And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds; for he shall uncover the cedar work.

15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

  1. 5 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.
    The folly of pride…
In this chapter we see pride lifted up in the people and God judged them quickly. They were foolish enough to say “there is none beside me” I dont understand how anyone could be that foolish to make such a statement. I say your just asking for trouble. However they did and God made them desolate and people passed by these foolish people and pointed and shook their hand at them.

  2. 3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.

  3. Seek the Lord
    Judgement on the Nations

2:1-12 Zephaniah calls upon the meek of the earth to seek the Lord. Then he lists the nations that Babylon will conquer. The cities of the Philistines (Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Ekron) will be destroyed. Moab will be reduced to rubble. The Ethiopians will be slain by the sword.

Psalm 105:4 Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face evermore.

  4. 10 This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the Lord of hosts.

These days it seems to be ok to make fun of the Christians, but any other ‘religion’ or far-fetched set of beliefs is off limits. Don’t get discouraged, God protects His own and this is nothing new, let’s see how He has dealt with it in the past…

  5. Once again God is calling his people to repentance before his coming judgment as shown in the following verses. God must be sought early and earnestly while there is still time.

  6. 3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.

Seek ye the Lord, it did not say look for him but seek him.

    seek
verb (used with object), sought, seek·ing.
1.to go in search or quest of: to seek the truth.
2.to try to find or discover by searching or questioning: to seek the solution to a problem.
3.to try to obtain: to seek fame.
4.to try or attempt (usually followed by an infinitive): to seek to convince a person.
5.to go to: to seek a place to rest.

To seek for to me means more than a casual search, but is far more important! This a through , more definite search, looking in more hidden places. Not that God is hidden, but maybe we have hidden things that we have not presented to God to repent.
Notice the prophet said also to seek righteousness and meekness. I find these things do not just show up one day, but require us to seek them with an honest heart. All things God show us will not always make us happy, especially if it crosses our way of life. Reveals what is really in our hearts. This is why we should take the search light of the word of God and search our lives to see if there is any hidden thing in there.
I would like to bring a question to mind, while the man of God is preaching do we see him as preaching to others, or are we wiling to turn the search light on us and see if he is preaching to me.

I believe it is time to SEEK THE LORD while he may be found!!!!l

  7. Pride = self idolatry

10 This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the Lord of hosts.

Could they be such thing as self idolatry or the worship of ones self? Absolutely yes!!!!! If all we care is about how anything is going to affect us, what is in it for us, and all the time is consumed by our self appearance or needs. Well, here is your sign, you are a self worshiper.
What does all those nations named in this chapter have in common? They worship many gods, they are self absorbed, arrogant, with air of superiority, and pride. The good thing is that God ALWAYS gives us a way out. ALWAYS gives us the answer, the remedy to our problem.

3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.

So rectify yourselves, let go of the pride and arrogance, and seek righteousness, and meekness. It is not only good to be righteous but if you are righteous and always flaunting it, then you are not meek. You must be meek in all your right doings.

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Here it is again, it is not only sufficient to seek His face but we must do it humbly…

  8. people will come and say things to us and about the way we dress talk walk or even about our God but although that happens we have to know that the Lord will be there through it all with us. he knows why were going through this and wants us to be the light in this mad and evil world and not drag ourselfs into what hes bring us through so far. he helps us to remember the things he pulled us through to make us stronger through hymns we paint let pride come and take over thank you Jesus for everything ❤ we love you

  9. ILove to eat the Word

15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

Pride comes before destruction. No matter what situation in life comes your way always remember to be humble and put humble people in positions of leadership.

God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

  10. RECOGNIZING OUR DESPERATE NEED OF GOD

3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.

The 2 words in verse 3 seem to me to be the fruit of each other.

    SEEK and MEEK

SEEK – to search for (someone or something)
: to try to find (someone or something)
: to ask for (help, advice, etc.)
: to try to get or achieve (something)

MEEK – having or showing a quiet and gentle nature
: not wanting to fight or argue with other people

A MEEK spirit accompanies the SEEKER and the SEEKER possesses a MEEK spirit.

When a person is searching for or seeking someone or something, they are enquiring at every opportunity. NOT acting as a “know it all”, but more like a “know nothing”.

Psalms 37:11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Psalms 149:4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.

Isaiah 29:19 The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

We learn through the WORD of GOD that BLESSING, JOY, SALVATION, REST and PEACE are found through the MEEK as we SEEK the LORD.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  11. 3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.
If we will seek The Lord and let Him talk to us then we won’t have a problem with being meek, but a lot of times we are not seeking for what God wants us to do,but for what we want to do that will make us look good!
God help me to do my best in all that I do for your kingdom for your glory and not mine. I want my life to be a light to others and not a stumbling block . We must always watch our attitude, our speach and our actions, because we never know who is watching and will make a mental note of that is the kind of Christian I want to be or if that is the way Christians act I want no part of it !
God help us to let our light shine!!

  12. All that and a bag of ships

10 This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the Lord of hosts.

15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

The issue pride is dealt again here in chapter 2. The Word is very clear on God’s view and stance of pride.

    Proverbs 16:18
Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

    Job 40:12
Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.

    Proverbs 21:14
An high look, and a proud heart, and the loosing of the wicked, is sin.

    Proverbs 8:13
The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

From whatever angle you look at it pride has a bad smell. If one wants to be big, he must be the lower himself and be humble and a servant to all. God did not come with titles, I am this, I am that, but rather Him whom I should serve, came to serve me. To give examples of great love. I’m reminded of the foot washing service. What heart and love is this? That of our Master. I guess it may be good to pray for God to keep us humble, and remind us constantly who we are.

The truth is I, we, are nothing without Him.

    Acts 17:28
    King James Version (KJV)
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring

  13. 3 Seek the Lord, all who are humble, and follow his commands. Seek to do what is right and to live humbly. Perhaps even yet the Lord will protect you — protect you from his anger on that day of destruction. (NLT)

We should diligently seek The Lord with a sincere and humble heart – In seeking Him we must also be obedient.

  14. 3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.

The meek shall inherit the earth.

meek[ meek ]adjective [meek·er, meek·est.]1. humbly patient or docile, as under provocation from others.2. overly submissive or compliant; tame.3. gentle; kind.

15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

Carelessness of their attitude toward God & his kingdom brought them to a place of judgement. We must not compare ourselves to others & only compare ourselves to his word.

  15. Vs.10, “This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts.”
Vs.11, “The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.” (KJV)

Vs.10-11 (MSG), “This is what they get for their gloated pride, their taunts and mockeries of the people of God-of-the-Angel-Armies. God will be seen as truely terrible – a Holy Terror. All earth-made gods will shrivel up and blow away; And everyone, wherever they are, far or near, will fall to the ground and worship him.”

It doesn’t matter how important man thinks he is or what he is, Pride will destroy him. God has a way of bringing man to his knees and showing them that He is God.

2 other passages of scriptures came to mind as I read this.
Romans 14:10-12, “But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”
Philippians 2:9-11, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in the heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

  16. Never let a rock cry out in my place. He’s worthy of all my praise!

God I search you with a hungry heart! Fill me with your spirit! Thank you Jesus!

  17. Act NOW

    Zephaniah 2:1-3 NLT
1 Gather together—yes, gather together, you shameless nation.

2 Gather before judgment begins, before your time to repent is blown away like chaff. Act now, before the fierce fury of the Lord falls and the terrible day of the Lord’s anger begins.

3 Seek the Lord, all who are humble, and follow his commands. Seek to do what is right and to live humbly. Perhaps even yet the Lord will protect you—protect you from his anger on that day of destruction.

“But wait, there’s more! Act now and…”

Do these words sound familiar? A popular sales pitch that’s turned into the anthem of infomercials in particular, I think it’s safe to say most of us have been exposed to this line at some point in our lives. But here in this chapter we have a different sort of call. God is not giving away free ShamWows as a bonus but something that can’t be sold in those infomercials:

    Isaiah 55:1-9
1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

4 Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.

5 Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the Lord thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee.

6 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

    Hebrews 3:12-15
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

    14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

    2 Corinthians 6:2
For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Jesus gives us salvation but He also tells us that the time to act is NOW. Our today is the day of our salvation, and we are wise not to wait but seek Him while He may be found…

  18. Seek Jesus

3 Seek ye Jehovah, all ye meek of the earth, that have kept his ordinances; seek righteousness, seek meekness:it may be ye will be hid in the day of Jehovah’s anger
    (Zephaniah 2:3 ASV)

When we seek Jesus everything else falls into place. First fruits of the day. Amen. Time to do not talk about doing.

33 But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you
    (Matthew 6:33 ASV)

  19. 15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

The verse that says that pride goeth before destruction came to mind. We must be careful not to put our noses up to high, because they will get caught by the branches of the trees. We must be confident, yet humble.

  20. Zephaniah 2:11
The Lord will be awesome to them,
    For He will reduce to nothing all the gods of the earth;
    People shall worship Him,
    Each one from his place,
Indeed all the shores of the nations.

    Zephaniah 2:9
    Therefore, as I live,”
Says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,
“Surely Moab shall be like Sodom,
And the people of Ammon like Gomorrah—
    Overrun with weeds and saltpits,
    And a perpetual desolation.
The residue of My people shall plunder them,
And the remnant of My people shall possess them.”

As the old saying goes “one and God is a majority.”

Trusting Jesus is all that really matters. We understand that he can fix anything, help anyone, and solve every problem. Yet in his love for us he sees the future. He cares what we will become, and not just who we are now.

  21. 15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

I was reminded this week that when God says He is the I am that it translates into the self existing one. There is no way that any person, city, people, nation, etc. can be self existing. We need God. With out God we would have no existence to begin with. How foolish it is to think we are something all our own. The dirt we are made of is nothing glorious. Anything we achieve here on earth is allowed only by God! We should remember to check ourselves continually to see we are not trying to self exist but rather depend upon God!

  22. This chapter illustrates settled. The time for reconciliation was approaching, as the window to make ready was fading. One is wise that makes ready, for the day of settlement approaches; “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand”. What a mighty God we serve! God bless Jerusalem and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  23. 3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.

When first reading you would ask why does the meek need to seek meekness? Well they are two different words. He is sayings those that are poor in spirit and seek righteousness and meekness that just maybe you will have a chance when theofit anger

  24. Nineveh’s Desolation

Ghost towns are remnants of glory days gone by. In our mind’s eye we picture windowless, empty buildings lining dusty streets. Yet can you imagine a magnificent city, once home to lovely temples, palaces, gardens so completely destroyed that scholars for a time question its very existence? Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, was once home to 120,000 people (Jhn 4:11), but it wasn’t until its ruins began to be explored in 1845 that many finally admitted it had existed at all. During the time of Zephaniah, Nineveh is so strong that she fears no evil (Zep 2:15). This spirit of arrogance and pride leads to her their ruin. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Pro 16:18). In Zephaniah 2:14 God declares that Nineveh will be home to screech owls. The Hebrew people considered the owl an unclean bird (Lev 11:13-18) and associated it with a scene of desolation. That’s exactly what becomes of Nineveh- the palaces of kings beome roosts for the owls.

  25. 15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

Woe to anyone who allows pride to rise up in their heart. This once rejoicing city now has become a city known of desolation. Likewise, those that get caught up in themselves, filled with the spirit of PRIDE, though they rejoice now thinking they have everything figured out, they will fall and become a city of desolation. Vengeance is mine saith the Lord, I will repay.

  26. Judgment against Ethiopia and Assyria 12. Ye E-thi- o’-pi-ans also, ye shall be slain by my sword. 13. And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy As-syr;-i-a; and will make Nin;-e-veh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness. 14. And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds; for he shall uncover the cedar work. This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand. Job 27:23; Lam. 2:15

  27. 15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

How is it that the great men and woman of the faith fall and backslide? They get their eyes off of what this is all about, a relationship with Him. Help us Lord to not find ourselves lost in our own desires that we loose touch of what is real.

  28. 3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.

How do you seek The Lord? Seek righteousness, meekness and The Lord. All else will be give to is after we seek Him

  29. Verses 2-3 AMP “[The time for repentance is speeding by like chaff whirled before the wind!] Therefore consider, before God’s decree brings forth [the curse upon you], before the time [to repent] is gone like the drifting chaff, before the fierce anger of the Lord comes upon you—yes, before the day of the wrath of the Lord comes upon you! Seek the Lord [inquire for Him, inquire of Him, and require Him as the foremost necessity of your life], all you humble of the land who have acted in compliance with His revealed will and have kept His commandments; seek righteousness, seek humility [inquire for them, require them as vital]. It may be you will be hidden in the day of the Lord’s anger.”

Same verses NLT “Gather before judgment begins, before your time to repent is blown away like chaff. Act now, before the fierce fury of the Lord falls and the terrible day of the Lord’s anger begins. Seek the Lord, all who are humble, and follow his commands. Seek to do what is right and to live humbly. Perhaps even yet the Lord will protect you—protect you from his anger on that day of destruction.” Don’t be lost in the threshing, NOW is the time to repent.

  30. Gather together—yes, gather together, you shameless nation. Gather before judgment begins, before your time to repent is blown away like chaff. Act now, before the fierce fury of the Lord falls and the terrible day of the Lord ’s anger begins. Seek the Lord, all who are humble, and follow his commands. Seek to do what is right and to live humbly. Perhaps even yet the Lord will protect you— protect you from his anger on that day of destruction. (Zephaniah 2:1-3 NLT)

Repent!!!!! You can’t keep running and expect Him to stay forever. It’s not God that changes, He’s the same yesterday today and forever but it’s us- we need to make sure our heart is in the right place. It’s not just the people who rarely come to church, it’s the people praising in the services. Where is your heart? You can be back sliden and still be shouting “Amen!” Where is your heart?
