Zephaniah 3

1 Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city!

2 She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God.

3 Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.

4 Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.

5 The just Lord is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.

6 I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant.

7 I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

8 Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the Lord, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent.

10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering.

11 In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.

12 I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the Lord.

13 The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

14 Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.

15 The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.

16 In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.

17 The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

18 I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.

19 Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.

20 At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.

  1. 13 The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

  2. Vs 9 The purest language today is that heavenly language of the Holy Ghost. To speak it is to speak what we may otherwise not know what to say to God.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

  3. Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem! For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” On that day I will gather you together and bring you home again. I will give you a good name, a name of distinction, among all the nations of the earth, as I restore your fortunes before their very eyes. I, the Lord, have spoken!” (Zephaniah 3:14, 17, 20 NLT)

  4. 5 The just Lord is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.

This verse is so complex and true, notice the Lord is in the midst looking for us and watching what we are doing. The Lord is everywhere as many people think because it is night God cannot see them. Because of the darkness our deeds go unnoticed, but God faileth not and brings our works into light every morning.
The part here that appalls me is the unjust know no shame. It does not bother them that God sees them.

7 I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

Just as these people have no fear of God. He thought they had received instructions, but they must not have because they rose early and continued to do evil.
I see people today that go about their life thinking God does not see. They know no shame, go about doing their own thing. Do not listen to the word of God. We have to be careful that we never think because we are going to church God will give us a little slack. Actually right the opposite, we need to allow God to move in or lives and us give him all.
God wants us to pray, fast, be faithful, truthful, and meek. We have to allow him to be LORD of our lives, not just a part of our lives. Many people are willing to let God be a part of their lives, but is God, LORD of your life.

  5. 14 Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.

  6. 17 The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

I love the portrayal of God this verse brings to mind:

He is in our midst – He is right here with us, ready to help us when we call on Him

He is mighty – He has all power and no enemy can withstand Him

He will save – He doesn’t want anyone to be lost (2 Peter 3:9)

He will rejoice over thee with joy – He rejoices when a sinner repents

He will rest in His love – perfect love casteth out all fear, and when there is no fear, there is rest

He will joy over thee with singing – I can just picture Him using the Book of Life as a hymn book, singing out every name written there, rejoicing over every one that won’t spend eternity in the lake of fire.

  7. LET THE REDEEMED OF THE LORD SAY SO!

This passage is the PROMISE to EVERY New Testament believer that has been Born Again of the Water and SPIRIT (John 3:5) who has sincerely REPENTED of all sin, Baptized in the name of JESUS and gloriously FILLED with the Holy SPIRIT. (Acts 2:38)

The disposition of the church should be that of JOY and GLADNESS,
the attitude should be REJOICING ALWAY,
the posture should be UPRIGHT WITH HANDS UP
    the sound should be REJOICING

The New Birth experience means that GOD has indeed taken away the judgements we deserve and covered us with HIS BLOOD and empowered us with HIS SPIRIT.

2Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

This day I pray we boldly proclaim the LORD JESUS and HIS LOVE for humanity.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  8. 17 The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

With God on our side who can be against us?

  9. 19 Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.

20 At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.

Todays chapter speaks to me a promise from the Lord that He knows exactly where we are, and what we are going through, as well as the storms that assail us, but HE will deliver us, bring us out victorious, as overcomers!

  10. iLove to eat the Word

    Obedience
2 She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God.

We must always listen to the voice of the Lord. Thank You Pastor for preaching the Word on Wednesday. It really flowed in the Holy Ghost and was anointed.

20 At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.

There is a chance to be redeemed even when we do fail to listen to the voice of God. The Word came to Jonah the second time. However, it would be better to obey than to be swallowed up by the situation that we are facing.

  11. REjoice

17 The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

    MW’s definition of Rejoice:

    “re·joice” \ri-ˈjȯis\

    (verb)
: to feel or show that you are very happy about something

    (transitive verb)
:  to give joy to :  gladden

    (intransitive verb)
:  to feel joy or great delight

There’s a mutual joy that comes in our relationship with God. He shows us how He is not one-sided but holds a standard of reciprocation in relationship. Calvary shows His willingness to love without return but Creation displays His intention for mutual participation and benefit. It’s amazing to think God, who does not need us to exist, not only created us but did so with the intention of sharing joy with us. To truly REjoice in the Lord, we find the wonderful opportunity for us to have joy and joy again with both us and the Lord enjoying the benefits of reciprocating relationship.

    Philippians 4:4
Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.

  12. 7 I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

Despite all of God’s correction, some will be unjust and even the Lord cannot change them. That is very sad but Rev 22:11 says “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.” It all boils down to our choices we make each & every day. My prayer is to be more like him everyday so that I can hear “Well done my good and faithful servant”.

  13. NLT 5 But the LORD is still there in the city, 5 and he does no wrong. Day by day he hands down justice, and he does not fail. But the wicked know no shame.
God continues to work in our city and its up to us to reach it.

  14. (KJV) Vs. 9, “For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with on consent.”

(MSG) Vs. 9, “In the end I will turn things around for the people. I’ll give them a language undistorted, unpolluted, Words to address God in worship and, united, to serve me with their shoulders to the wheel.”

God has given us the Holy Ghost, a heavenly language, to worship him with, and it UNITES us, so that, we can work together for his kingdom.

  15. These are things to come even today!

1 Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city!

2 She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God.

4 Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.

God is a jealous God, and he will not put up with Idolatry…..

So, being rich isn’t all that! Remember to gain the whole world but loose your soul.

12 I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the Lord.

Wait upon Jesus Christ, and you won’t go wrong!

20 At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.

    “Holdfast”………………………………………………………………..

  16. 9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent.
10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering.

What is that pure language? I believe it is the Holy Ghost. Thank you Jesus that we have the opprotunity to speak in that language. Thank you for the promise.

  17. 1 Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city!

2 She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God.

    The Loving Voice
The love of a father is sometimes hard to comprehend…one may feel and say “you just want to control my life, and tell me what to do all the time”. The reality is that under the strictness and correction, lies the voice of the father that is just trying to show his love by guiding one’s life.
The Word says that if men can give
good things to their children how much more will the Heavenly Father not give..

Matthew 7:11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

When I was young the first scripture that I memorized was

    Proverbs 4:1
    Hear, my children, the instruction of a father,And give attention to know understanding;

Sometimes when we get corrected we feel as if everything is against us and a sense of frustration comes in, but I noticed something in verse 2 that caught my attention. Besides not obeying the voice, it is “she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God.” Makes me think, what caused the disobedience can be the fact of not trusting in the Lord. Not trusting that He has the best interest for you. When correction comes I see here what was expected “she drew not near to her God.” How many blessings can be forfeited by taking the wrong action and not hearing the voice? If instead of running the opposite and “doing your thing” one would rather draw near to God, one does not know what God can do or how He could just amaze you because the opportunity was not given for Him to glorify on the situation. Now I think of your Heavenly Father, your spiritual father and those in authority over you. The bible teaches me that obedience is better than sacrifice, therefore the road to success is to listen to the voice and obey. Now I don’t know all things but the bible teaches you of some examples of what not to do. In the end I am reminded of this I learned from pastor. Is it going up glorify God, glorify me, or glorify the devil?
I thank The Lord that He has placed, and I have allowed those that can speak over my life. The Lord loves us..oh how He loves us…how He loves me..!

  18. 15 The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.

  19. 11 In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.

Gods presence, mercy, favor, in our lives should never bring a prideful and haughty spirit. We should keep a humble attitude, remembering where we once were and extend that to others around us.

    Proverbs 16:18-19
    Pride goeth before destruction,
and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly,
than to divide the spoil with the proud.

  20. 20 At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.

Everyone tries to make a name for themselves in this life but here we see that if we wait on The Lord he will make a name for us. He is the one who can set up kings and take them down so if he makes me a name it will last.

  21. This chapter illustrates view. Those that had nothing to offer but praise and worship had the most. The carnal minded views wealth and status as the answer, whereas God (Jesus) desires sincere praise and worship. What a mighty God we serve! God bless Jerusalem and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  22. 17 The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him. -Psalms 68:1

God is in our midst, we have victory in Jesus! I am victorious through the power of the Holy Ghost!

Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him. -Psalms 68:1

  23. Gods timing

    Zephaniah 3:8
Therefore wait ye for me, saith Jehovah, until the day that I rise up to the prey; for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger; for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

Everything happens according to Gods plan. A lot of times we want to rush things but God has a a timeline in mind. We wait for Jesus to give the green light.

The promise is ahead of us and a lot of times we want the blessing without the breakthrough.

  24. God is with us
This passage show us that Gid will not leave us or let us down. Hallujah God reigns and we will never be alone!

  25. My God is a God who reigns forever and ever! He will never fail! Thank you Jesus for a constant presence of your love.

  26. 14 Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.

15 The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.

Just a little longer and God will do a great thing.

Though it seems like it is far off there is a pay day coming. God will avenge us of our adversaries. God will restore what the enemy has taken and add to it.

    Endurance will pay off!

  27. In reading this chapter, it reminded of the song “Standing on the Promises”:

Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

    Standing, standing,
    Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
    Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I now can see
    Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
List’ning every moment to the Spirit’s call,
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.

  28. When God Sings

This passage, written for the Daugther of Zion – Jerusalem (Zep 3:14) -is also for us as God’s daughters. I won’t discredit the men: we are all children of Christ if: “26For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

Whenever we pull through the tough trails of life God is right there to rejoice over us. In fact, the mere thought of us brings a song to his lips. The Hebrew word “singing” can also mean shouting with joy cheerfully. All of heaven rejoices when just one soul is baptized. Their is great promise of comfort in these verses, obviously comfort because the Lord knew the path he set for us was going to be a challenge. Fear, harm, and the ehaustion level will tempt our “hands to hang limp” in Scripture “hang limp” meant feeble and for example is used in Eze 30:25; Jer 47:3; Jer 50:43; Isa 13:7. Majority of the time its mentioned in times of judgment/battle or in challenges of strength. God assures us that we don’t have to worry about strength because he is mighty to save. In fact many of the battles the Lord conquered before his people he used only a handful of soldiers. If we are fighting for Him or He is fighting for us, He ultimately is the victor. It is no longer about us, but about us crossing the finish line. Perhaps even more precious is the knowledge that God is there during the dificult times -during the times we feel exiled from “home”, as are the people of Jerusalem in this passage. As a caring Father, God walks beside us, and his whispers of assurance are to ease our sorrows and quiet our fears.

    From Rags to Riches

At one time, Judah was praised above all nations. During the reign of Solomon gold was the most used metal, silver’s value was low. The Queen of Sheba actual journeyed to Israel just to confirm Solomon’s wealth and wisdom. Jerusalem’s beauty and majesty testified to the favor blessed to her from the Lord. Then, because of sinful choices, she became like a princess turned peasant. Like a peasant, she wandered, troubled and penniless. Yet even then she was neither alone neither forgotten. At her darkest moment, a happily-ever-after ending is promised. Someday, Zephaniah prophesies, Judah will be restored to her former glory. This senario is not only Judah but also for the church today. One day the church, too, will be restored and presented to Jesus Christ as His bride (Rev 19:7). As members of the church, we can know that God will heal any shame we encounter, bring balm for any pain and forget our poor choices when we repent of them. And he will welcome us home, into his kingdom. That makes this the ultimate rags-to-riches tale.

  29. Restoring Israel’s Remnant 13. The remnant of Is’-ra-el shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid. 14. Sing, O daughter of Zi’on; shout, O Is’-ra-el; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Je-ru’-sa-lem. 15. The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Is’-ra-el, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.

  30. Those who are left will be the lowly and humble, for it is they who trust in the name of the Lord. (Zephaniah 3:12 NLT)

When you are the only one who continues to live right, praising God and your friends have left you don’t take that as a sign you need to leave. You are there for a purpose and you were strong enough to overcome all the temptations that fled your way. Stand firm in God and everything will fall into place.
