Zechariah 7

1 And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the Lord came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chisleu;

2 When they had sent unto the house of God Sherezer and Regemmelech, and their men, to pray before the Lord,

3 And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?

4 Then came the word of the Lord of hosts unto me, saying,

5 Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?

6 And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

7 Should ye not hear the words which the Lord hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain?

8 And the word of the Lord came unto Zechariah, saying,

9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:

10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts.

13 Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts:

14 But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

  1. 9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:

10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

  2. 11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

These people were still filled with rebellion, They were sent a Prophet, but would not hearken. The old saying shrugged their shoulder and stopped their ears. they did not want to hear what God had to tell them.
Now the sad part of all this is their is consequences to not listening to God. If we do not hear it does not change the law or the prophecy. We will still pay the price of our rebellion.
They made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear and God sent judgement to them. When these people cried The Lord did not hear when they cried also!

  3. Zechariah 7:4-6 MSG
[4-6] God-of-the-Angel-Armies gave me this Message for them, for all the people and for the priests: “When you held days of fasting every fifth and seventh month all these seventy years, were you doing it for me? And when you held feasts, was that for me? Hardly. You’re interested in religion, I’m interested in people.

God isn’t impressed with empty rituals, he came to save the lost.

  4. 12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts.

    Ezekiel 11:19
19 I will give them a new heart and a new mind. I will take away their stubborn heart of stone and will give them an obedient heart.

    Matthew 13:5-6
Some of it fell on rocky ground, where there was little soil. The seeds soon sprouted, because the soil wasn’t deep. But when the sun came up, it burned the young plants; and because the roots had not grown deep enough, the plants soon dried up.

A stony heart is self willed, stubborn, and set in its ways. The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh and he refused to let the people go.

The only way to remain sensitive to the voice of God, and have a soft heart is through humility, and submission.

Pride and rebellion quickly hardens the heart. A soft heart receives the word of The Lord.

    2 Corinthians 3:3
Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

  5. Remember January? Remember the week long fast? What was your personal purpose for fasting? Was it because everyone else was doing it? Was it a competition between you and your family/friends to determine who could hold out the longest?

Fasting is a spiritual discipline intended to draw us closer to God. The first part is to spend extra time with in prayer with the Lord. Instead of eating during a lunch hour/half-hour, one should pray. Denying the flesh, what it craves (food), builds one’s resolve to be about the Kings business and be more heavenly minded. Fasting should direct our hunger towards Jesus; who said in John 4:32 “But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.”

Pastor has said it many times; if you fasted for any other reason you were simply starving yourself. Here the leaders of Bethel’s intent of previous fasts were questioned. If we were questioned would we be found wanting? Fasting for spiritual growth should be part of our lives; not limited to the first week in January.

  6. “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other. (Zechariah 7:9, 10 NLT)

This seems like an easy commandment. In fact most of us in the church today would probably think are keeping this passage of scripture. The fact of the matter is, this scripture is speaking about pure unity among the brethren and pure motives during outreach.

Lord I pray that we would all evoluate our plans and attitudes and that we could achieve true unity and true outreach in your kingdom.

  7. In reading this chapter I see that these people were so into the motions and full of pride that they were even decieving themsleves. It was time to fast so as always they did, but they had the wrong intentions if they had any at all and didn’t give God the glory He deserves. They were so numbed by their routines that they couldn’t even hear the voice of The Lord, even worse, God wouldn’t have it to hear them.

I pray that we would never get so caught up in the motions of ministry that we forget the reason we’re doing it all for. The ministries we involve ourselves in are not for our own pride but all for the glory of God and His kingdom.

  8. THE PATH TO A HARD HEART

For years I have been challenged to comprehend how GOD fearing, people loving, church attending, faithful followers of the LORD JESUS can become hardened, calloussed and non responsive. We find understanding in todays passage.

    They refused to harken.

Hearken – 1: listen 2: to give respectful attention
7181. bÅv∂q qashab, kaw-shab´; a primitive root; to prick up the ears, i.e. hearken:—attend, (cause to) hear(-ken), give heed, incline, mark (well), regard.

They were distracted by their own selfish desires rather than trusting the Plan, Path and Process of GOD for their lives.

    CEV
11-12 But everyone who heard those prophets, stubbornly refused to obey. Instead, they turned their backs on everything my Spirit[d] had commanded the earlier prophets to preach. So I, the Lord, became angry 13 and said, “You people paid no attention when I called out to you, and now I’ll pay no attention when you call out to me.”

THE PATH TO A HARD HEART is just don’t listen or pay attention to what GOD is saying through HIS preachers.

I encourage us to respond to GOD, his WORD and his PREACHERS. Even if we don’t understand why or even think it is necessary, our response of obedience reveals to GOD that we are willing to follow and move into the supernatural (doesn’t make much sense) which goes beyond the natural (ordinary – makes sense).

I pray for and seek the SUPERNATURAL acts, power and demonstration of the SPIRIT of GOD.

  9. 9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:
10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

I’m reminded of the song,’ Your my brother , your my sister.’ Why would you want to do someone harm? Hate the sin, not the sinner. Why do we think that when we get the Holy Ghost , we are better than others? First- Jesus was came to seek and to save that which is lost. That means that we all have been lost. Second- Do we forget where God brought us from? We shouldn’t. We all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. And yet he is faithful and just to forgive us. I thank God for a pastor who teaches us to treat others all the same. Yes respect is earned ,but the quickest way to gain some is with a smile and a “howdy do.” This world says you have to be tough in order to have respect. Well one answer to that. My Heavenly Father went Hell and back so that I might live. So your my brother, your my sister. So take me by the hand. Together we will work until He comes. There’s no fo that can defeat us. When were walking side by side. Together in unity walking towards Gods will.

  10. 9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:
10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

  11. Take care of your own affairs and have yourself on the right path. Help others and be uplifting to them. This is your greatest testimony!

  12. 12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts.

13 Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts:

Wow! When God sends a word through the man of God and we don’t listen, God doesn’t listen to us. God takes it very seriously when we ignore Him! Listen to the men of God in our lives! Pastor, prophets, evangelists, all come with a word from God after spending time in prayer. Once they do their part and deliver Gods message it’s our job to hear it and receive it.

  13. Attitude is everything

9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:

10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

What is the use to fast if you are not going to have God in your heart and pray? It is just a waste of time and hunger. We must be aware of God, pray, and act according to His word. What is the use to fast and be grievous if we don’t change our ways? It is a waste of time, if we don’t repent and follow the word of God. When we do things, just to do them, because is tradition, and we leave the true repenting heart out of it; it is just religion without base.
James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
James 2: 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

God is not looking for a religion but for a relationship.

  14. 10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

There comes a time when God has to say enough is enough. When we won’t heed the voice of God through His word spoken to us, He has to take His hands off us and allow whatever will happen, happen. Once we recognize that we are all on our own, then we have the choice to repent and seek Him and His ways again, or continue in our ways which will lead to destruction. We must recognize when we have allowed our heart to become a stone, and cry out to the Lord to replace our stony heart with a heart of flesh that we can again feel the conviction of His spirit leading and guiding us.

    John 16:13
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

  15. God is hungry for a relationship with all of His children and has a desire to draw us near. It should be a daily act for us (me) to participate in getting closer to God. He is the one who gave us life and is allowing us to breathe. Why would we not want to give praise to the one who is worthy?

  16. Heart ❤️Service

“Say to all your people and your priests, ‘During these seventy years of exile, when you fasted and mourned in the summer and in early autumn, was it really for me that you were fasting? And even now in your holy festivals, aren’t you eating and drinking just to please yourselves? (Zechariah 7:5, 6 NLT)

“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other. (Zechariah 7:9, 10 NLT)

These scriptures remind of the verse in Matthew ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. (Matthew 15:8 NLT). We are to love the Lord with ALL our heart soul and mind. And with the same love, love our neighbor as ourselves. This makes the prefect cross Love the Lord- vertically. And love your neighbors- horizontal. When people see us they must see the cross. If our love for The Lord or each other begin to become unbalanced all that will display is an “❌”

Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” (Mark 12:29-31 NLT)

  17. Vs. 8, “And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying,”
Vs.9, “Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:”
Vs.10, “Oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.”
Vs.11, “But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.”
Vs.12, “Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant (to hard to be broken; unyielding, firm) stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.”

The Principles that God expected his children to live by back then are the same Principles he expects us to live by today. His word has NEVER changed. “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” Ps.119:89
He expects us to judge rightly, have mercy and compassion towards our brothers, help the widows and fatherless, reach out to the strangers, the poor, and needy, and not to imagine evil in our hearts towards our brother, but to pray for one another.

My prayer today is “That our ears would not be deaf nor our hearts be hardened to the word of God, but that we have ears to hear, and our hearts would be good ground for the word of God to fall upon.

  18. 5 Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?

6 And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

7 Should ye not hear the words which the Lord hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain?

    When you fast..
After reading this chapter made meditate about the purpose of fasting. I asked myself what are some of the purposes that we do? To consecrate, to cleanse, to kill the flesh and get closer to God, to be sensitive up the spirit to better hear and obey the word of the Lord…then I see some of the other examples in which it talks about fasting. When Jesus told his deciples after they couldn’t cast out a demon, “this kind only comes out through fasting and prayer, then another more elaborate example given in Isaiah
    58

    Isaiah 58:5-7 NLT
You humble yourselvesby going through the motions of penance, bowing your headslike reeds bending in the wind. You dress in burlapand cover yourselves with ashes. Is this what you call fasting?Do you really think this will please the Lord? “No, this is the kind of fasting I want:Free those who are wrongly imprisoned;lighten the burden of those who work for you.Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless.Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.

And we see here what The Lord required of, and requires today, of the people..

9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:

10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

So you can really just say that a fasting is not merely for you but to to minister or serve better. After all God is into souls. What are we trying to gain out of a fast if its not to do His will… Going back to Isaiah here the blessing of a fast the pleases The Lord.

    Isaiah 58:8-14 NLT
“Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal.Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind. Then when you call, the Lord will answer.‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply.“Remove the heavy yoke of oppression.Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors! Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dryand restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring. Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known as a rebuilder of wallsand a restorer of homes. “Keep the Sabbath day holy.Don’t pursue your own interests on that day,but enjoy the Sabbathand speak of it with delight as the Lord’s holy day.Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day,and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly. Then the Lord will be your delight.I will give you great honorand satisfy you with the inheritance I promised to your ancestor Jacob.I, the Lord, have spoken!”

  19. 9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:

10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

  20. 11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

I have seen this happen time and time again. In the ever day life of people and in the church. There are people that are just not going to listen. They are going to do things their way even though the man of God has warned them time after time of the price they will have to pay down the road, but they harden their hearts and do it any way.
Reminds me of the song that says sin will take you further than you wanted to go and cost you more than you wanted to pay.
Jesus,I pray that I will listen to your word and soften my heart and do your perfect will !!

  21. 12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts.

Many times we as people tend to not listen when the man of God is preaching strong conviction, because… it does’t feel good. Today’s society pushes us to go by our “feelings”, and just to do whatever it is that feels good. The Word of God says just the opposite though.

David even penned it as asking God to write His laws on the stoney tablets of his heart, that he might not sin against Him. (KBV)

If we don’t listen and obey the man of God in our lives, we end up in grave danger…

  22. 8-10
This is one of the clearest of Scriptures many expressions of Gods heart. Its not in ritual but in relationships that we honor the Lord. Its not in religion but compassion that his love is sensed by others

  23. Lord, don’t allow our hears to be stopped, nor allow hearts to become hardened!

    “Be Blessed”…………………………………………………………………………

  24. This chapter illustrates intentions. Their intentions were questionable. God (Jesus) sees the sincerity and motive of ones intentions, as such one should desire to please God. One is wise to heed what sayeth the word of God, and the man of God. What a mighty God we serve! God bless Jerusalem and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  25. 9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:
10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.
11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.
We need to listen to God and not do our own thing.
God let me hear your voice and listen to your voice!:)

  26. “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. (Zechariah 7:9 NLT)

  27. 11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts.

13 Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts
Yes God is a God of love but he is also a God of vengeance! If we don’t want to listen to God’s word we can’t expect him to listen when we call on him for help. Be a friend to God the way you want him to be a friend to you.

  28. 11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

This is what the world does today. They do not want to be told that they live according to what is called sin. They could care less about God’s ways. In fact it makes people mad if you mention Biblical principles – especially if their livestyles don’t add up to them. Nonetheless, there is a God whose word is forever settled in heaven & there is a payday coming. Help us reach those that oppose you God.

  29. 9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:

  30. Verses 8-13 NIV “And the word of the Lord came again to Zechariah: “This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.’ “But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and covered their ears. They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the Lord Almighty was very angry. “‘When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,’ says the Lord Almighty.”

The captions in the NKJV for this chapter read “Obedience Better than Fasting” and “Disobedience Resulted in Captivity”. To be hard as flint is to be something very hard or unyielding. Obedience is key in doing His will and not your own.

  31. 9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:

10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

  32. Sacrifice is for Jesus

5 Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh month, even these seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? 6 And when ye eat, and when ye drink, do not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves
    (Zechariah 7:5-6 ASV)

Whatever we do must be for the glory of God. We must not do acts of righteousness or sacrifice for any other reason. If we do things simply because it is custom or to make ourselves feel better, then we are not right in the eyes of God.

Many people today go to church and do things for God to feel saved. They aren’t really seeking a relationship with God, but rather are justifying themselves. This behavior leads to dead religion.

  33. and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets:

There are plenty of “know it alls” out there who want to make their own way… The truth is that God has been saying the same things all this time and still many dont listen. Its not too hard to understand the will of God if you are about the fathers business.

  34. Deeper Within

3 And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?

The message here is painful but clear: just because you’re going through the motions of Christian living doesn’t mean your heart is right with God. I am reminded of lyrics from the song, “Heart Of Worship”:

I’ll bring You more than a song
    For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
    You search much deeper within
    Through the ways things appear
    You’re looking into my heart

It’s true that God looks beyond the surface to see things as they really are. A symptom of a hard heart is that of an obsession with the outside while ignoring the outside. The Pharisees exemplified this:

    Matthew 23:26-28

26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

We must be careful not to soothe our conscience with a clean outside so we can ignore the reality of what’s deeper within. Many times we cling to our obsession with the outer so we can try to cling to the sense of peace we can try to control, but the reality is that we will never experience the true peace that goes down to the deepest parts of us until we allow God to be our Prince of peace and have access to all of us.

Only God can bring the peace that passes all understanding to our soul and it is only in His light that we can find the treasure of being known and yet completely loved. Pride and lies keep the “fig leaves” over our hearts and over our eyes so that we blind ourselves to the reality of God’s love. But if we will step out on faith to answer His call instead of turning away, we can have the scales removed from our eyes to see His amazing love and receive a heart of flesh to love and obey Him.

    Ecclesiastes 12:13
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

    Ecclesiastes 12:13 AMP
All has been heard; the end of the matter is: Fear God [revere and worship Him, knowing that He is] and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man [the full, original purpose of his creation, the object of God’s providence, the root of character, the foundation of all happiness, the adjustment to all inharmonious circumstances and conditions under the sun] and the whole [duty] for every man.

  35. Indeed, they made their heart as hard as diamond, so that they could not obey the Torah and the other words the Lord who rules over all had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore, the Lord who rules over all had poured out great wrath. -Zechariah 7:12

Ignoring the word of God time and time again is a dangerous place to be. Hear the word of the Lord, but be not hear only but a doer as well.

Insensitivity can happen to anyone. Guard your heart, obey the word of God.

  36. God desires us to do all for his glory and not our own. We should not follow him for what we can get, but just to worship and adore him.

  37. Hearts of stone 11. But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. 12. Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. 2 Chron. 36:16 Ezek. 11: 19 13. Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:

    ;19

  38. Fasting for God / God’s Standard of Righteousness

Zechariah 7:9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:

Isaiah 58:6,7 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
v.7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him ; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

  39. 11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

We should never let ourselves get so bitter and prideful that God can’t speak to us. We need to have less of ourselves and more of Him

  40. “was it really for me that you fasted” (vs5). The Lord’s people followed His commands like fasting a mourning in the fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years. At this point it has been carried out as another mundane tradition. Yet they don’t follow other commands like administering true justice, and showing mercy and compassion to one another. He spoke through earlier prophets and warned them while Jerusalem was “at rest and prosperous” just like its hard to wake up from a comfortable bed to turn off a blarring alarm clock. Istead, God says that “they refused to pay attention; stubbornly turned their backs and stopped up their ears.” (vs11). Because they did not listen, God says now He won’t listen when they cry out to Him. This is how they made the pleasant land so desolate, by stopping up their ears to all the warnings and sirens God sent them through earlier prophets now they have be scattered by the whirlwind. All of this could have been prevented if they hadn’t gotten so complacent in the luxuries in life. Refusal to repent will end in spiritual and physical destruction. Do you hear the alarm?
