Acts 5

1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.

9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.

13 And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.

14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)

15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.

16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

17 Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,

18 And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.

19 But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,

20 Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.

21 And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.

22 But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned and told,

23 Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.

24 Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.

25 Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people.

26 Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned.

27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,

28 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.

29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.

31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

33 When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.

34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;

35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.

36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.

37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.

38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:

39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

  1. CUT TO THE HEART VS PRICKED IN THEIR HEART.

The word cut in the concordance:

ACTS 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

**Have you ever spoken and shared the word of God, only to find an irate and offended reaction? Or may be so out right angry that they never speak to you again? This people were cut to the heart. No, it was nothing you did wrong, some just do not want to accept any wrong doing. They prefer to blame others and make others pay for their mistake; therefore, keeping their “superiority” over them.
While others you share the word and immediately you can see the tears of repentance, or a hunger in their eyes for more knowledge, and a desire to serve God. Those were pricked in their hearts. Although the Webster dictionary gives about the same definitions for both, to cut =
to penetrate with or as if with a sharp-edged instrument or object. While to prick = a mark or shallow hole made by a pointed instrument. The word of God will affect or penetrate people in different ways. Some will get offended to which I usually use Psalm 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. Others will open their hearts to God and can’t get enough. May we always deliver the word of God with boldness, but dignity. May it always prick and not cut and may it always bring forth fruit. IN JESUS NAME. AMEN.

  2. 11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

What brought revival here will bring revival everywhere, (GREAT FEAR FELL ON THE CHURCH) respect for God and the things of God. After this people saw that God knew everything, even what was in their heart, that was told to no man. Many signs and wonders were done by the hands of the apostles.
They were all in one accord, which brought many people to the church and caused super growth in as many as 5000 in one day. The answer is in (UNITY) they were all in one accord. Not a Honda but in the same mind, with the same intention, same purpose, we are going to reach the world with a message of hope, peace, and deliverance. We need to refocus on what our purpose is.

    Read these verses with purpose!!

After being beaten they left rejoicing, glad that they were counted worthy to suffer and daily. Teaching and preaching Jesus Christ.
What are we teaching people when we meet them on the streets?
Do they see Jesus in us?

  3. Why do we as humans try to hide things from God when we know God knows all and sees all. Husbands be aware of what your wife is bringing in the home and the same goes to the wife be careful what your husband is bringing in the home. If you know its wrong don’t lie on account you have to answer to God and no one is going to save you from the pits of hell for lieing. Time to man/woman up and do what is right in the sight of the Lord.

  4. after Gamaliel’s speech it seems strange that the council agreed with him that the apostles’ doctrine might possibly be of God, but yet they were not afraid enough of God’s possible wrath that they still had the apostles beaten.

  5. YES!!!
34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;-
37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.

That was GOD’S faithfulness towards HIS own, that HE would raise one person (a Pharisee) up to stand and speak for the apostles!!!
    GOD is faithful and just.
GOD gives us the victory every time we trust and obey HIM.
LORD, that I may COMPLETELY trust in YOU. I love you JESUS!!! Thank You for always loving me even while I am sooo undeserving….. Thank YOU.

  6. LET GOD ARISE

39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

We witness so many powerful revelations and demonstrations, concerning the Kingdom of GOD and HIS Church here in Chapter 5. I could comment on:

    LYING DISCIPLES DIE
    DECEIT NEVER WINS WITH GOD
    GREEDY PEOPLE COMMIT SPIRITUAL SUICIDE
    PRIDE ANGERS PHARISEES
FALSE ACCUSATIONS CANT CONTAIN THE RIGHTEOUS
    MIRACULOUS JAIL BREAKS
    COMMITTED TEACHERS
    WISDOM SPEAKS
    MINISTRY ABUSE
    RADICAL WORSHIPPERS

I choose LET GOD ARISE today, because this is the proving ground of our FAITH. Regardless of who or what opposes us, “IF IT be of GOD” IT cannot be overthrown!

Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

1John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

Psalms 68:1 Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.

Our KEY to VICTORY in every situation is to LET GOD ARISE and watch our enemies scatter and flee for fear of our great GOD and HIS defense of us.

  7. Our mission is to proclaim the gospel of Christ !!! GO!

Go, take your stand in the temple courts and declare to the people the whole doctrine concerning this Life (the eternal life which Christ revealed). Then Peter and the apostles replied, We must obey God rather than men. Yet [in spite of the threats] they never ceased for a single day, both in the temple area and at home, to teach and to proclaim the good news (Gospel) of Jesus [as] the Christ (the Messiah). (Acts 5:20, 29, 42 AMP)
We had a bible study last night here in Laredo. I was sure blessed to share the gospel with my mom, my sister, and my aunt. As they were asking me questions, tonight I will have a question for them. ” have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed.” In Jesus name!!!

  8. 2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

When I read it this time, I just caught that it did not say that he kept a part of the tithe. In fact it did not specify what part, he kept back.

Makes me wonder if he and his wife had talked about selling this possession and giving the money to the church, and kept enough to eat out on, or to do some repair on their house. The Word does not specify. But when we look at it in that sense it becomes even more applicable today.

Many times I have heard this scripture preached, and used for tithes and offerings, but what if it had been for a pledge? What if they said that they would sell their horse and give all the money to the church, but since they were being blessed and getting more, they kept the extra above what they had told their friends they were getting for the horse.

We , I, would be very wise to pay close attention to what we, I, say, and stick with it, that we not lie to the Holy Ghost.

    Authority VS Influence

In the following verses we have another example of how “Influence” is a more powerful force in the lives of humanity than that of “Authority”.

    34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;

I think we can all agree that the Apostles had great authority that came from God. They received boldness in the previous chapter and they exercised that boldness in this chapter. Even when questioned by the council, the Apostles spoke with such authority and boldness that the following happens in verse :33 “When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.”

    It was Influence that triumphed over authority that day that gave the Apostles another day to preach the gospel. 34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;

This man with his “Influence” was used by God to deliver the Apostles. There are a lot of things that can be learned from the Authority VS Influence principal. One lesson out of many is to be very careful what we allow to influence us and our children. There are good influences and negative ones. It really doesn’t matter if we’re the parent and we have the Authority or not, ultimately it is the influence in our childrens lives that will affect them the most.

1 Corinthians 15:33 “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character. 34Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning…”

  10. ” But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,”

He and his wife, right in the middle of the greatest move of God, when signs and wonders where literally taking place in front of their eyes, and the Spirit of God begin to move upon people to “make all things common” by selling their goods and giving it to the overseers of the Church to do what was needed. They purposed in their heart, so it seemed, to be part of the team, do what the others were doing, but it wasn’t really in their heart, it was for show, to be seen. Little did they know the spirit of God would call them out, and it would bring death.

God is doing great things in Fort Worth and He is using the people of POFW to loose the bands on lives that are in sin, to minister to the hurting, and bring deliverance to those bound by addictions. He is calling all of us to sacrifice for the Kingdom sake with Impacting Our Future Together. If all of us do our part, like they did in this chapter, not selling all we have, put everyone participating, wholehearted, God will take what we have and multiply. It is all in the attitude of the giving. I believe if Ananias and Sapphira had kept a portion for themselves, and been honest when Peter asked the question, that they would not have died. But it was deception in lying to the Holy Ghost. In October we all made commitments to IFT. I don’t want to be guilty of lying to the Holy Ghost, and keeping back apart of what God has blessed us with to bless His Kingdom, and fulfill my commitment.

  11. The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus. And every day, in the Temple and from house to house, they continued to teach and preach this message: “Jesus is the Messiah.” (Acts 5:41, 42 NLT)

    Count it all joy!

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do. (James 1:2-8 NLT)

  12. Ananias and Sapphira 1. But a certain man named An-a-ni’-as, with Sap-phi’-ra his wife, sold a possession, 2. And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’feet. 3.But Pe’-ter said, An-a-ni’-as, why hath Sa’-tan filled thine heart to lie to the Ho’-ly Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4. Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. 5. And An-a-ni’-as hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. They should not have lied they new better, Did they not know the ” Ten Commandments ” where it says thou shalt not steal in Exodus Chapter 20 It caused them their death.

  13. 38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: 39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God. KJV

38-39 “So I am telling you: Hands off these men! Let them alone. If this program or this work is merely human, it will fall apart, but if it is of God, there is nothing you can do about it—and you better not be found fighting against God!” MSG

How many times have taken things into our own hands only to have it fall apart? Even though our intentions were good if God is not part of the plan, the results likely will be less than we expect.

Mathew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

  14. “We ought to obey God rather than men”. There were those that thought of self, and there were those that thought not of self. One may also have situations where one can think of self or not, as such it would be wise to obey God (Jesus). What a mighty God we serve, thank God for his word! God bless Jerusalem and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  15. Vs.28, “Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us..”

It doesn’t really matter what man says. It only matters what God says (Commands) us to do, and that is GO and TEACH. We need to fill (Saturate) the city of Fort Worth with the doctrine of Jesus Christ.

  16. In this scripture, you can see several things here. This World doesn’t want us using the name of Jesus Christ or preaching the Gospel. They simply would like for us Christians to disappear and they could continue in the their rebellion against God, and not have any accountability for their sin. Instead of accepting the fact that they need salvation, given by God. They accept a lie, by trying out bizaare religions or convincing themselves that they are a good person or moral. All other religions you must qualify through some kind of works or levels to reach God. Like becoming a martar/suicide bomber or by some other type of performance of good works trying to reach up to God. But, being a Christian is the only religion were God reaches down to you. You can’t measure up! Have faith in Christ Jesus for your salvation and him alone.

Don’t be like that married couple, and always pray for a guard upon those lips and do your best to keep your integrity with the Holy Ghost. Don’t give up the Holy Ghost, but give into him. “Surrender”………………………………………………….

    “Be blessed and Holdfast”………………………………………………………

  17. 39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

I heard an amazing thought today. The Bible says the gates of hell cannot prevail against the church. Since gates are defensive then the church is on the offensive.

This means the gates of hell cannot prevail against the attack of the church!

This is why he fights us so hard. He doesn’t want us to realize we are at war, and our attacks on him will prevail against him!

Spiritual warfare is effective against the adversary, and he knows it better than some do!

  18. 14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)

15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.

  19. World Changers

How far are willing to go for Jesus? Could we say that we would count it a joy to be persecuted for Him? Needless to say I think it would be safe to say that we think it a hardship if we get turned down by our friends. Who are we to say we know what it’s like to be truly tested. I am still at awe from the story of the young man who taught a bible study letter by letter. How many thousands of homes did he go to just to be turned down? For just the opportunity to teach a bible study about God. God help me, for I have not given my all to do your will. Why can’t we be world changers? Your world is around you. Change that. And as you meet new people your world expands. Why not be a planet shaker and rock your world around you with truth. We are so afraid of what people might say about us. Well just to let you know they will talk anyway , so why not about what God is doing. Be a world changer.

  20. 5:5 Though God does not judge every believer’s sin with death, in some situations God does(1 Cor.11:30; 1 John 5:16). As with Achan, this first act in a new era serves as an example (Josh.7:10-26).

  21. 28 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.

There is power in the name of Jesus. Let’s fill this city with his word and see the blood of Jesus cover the souls of many!

  22. Through all the punishment and heartache the apostles stood by Jesus and the doctrine. They had guts, they weren’t quitters. We can glean from this… How many times have we been in a situation that we had to stand up for our beliefs to the point of death or persecution? How many of us can really pass that test?

  23. 16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

Miracles and wonders came upon Jerusalem, the power of God heals those who receive him and believe in faith that Jesus is Lord. People knew God was powerful and able to do wonders. In Jesus Name all who preach and teach in his name are highly favored by God. I seek you Lord!

  24. 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Why do people think they are lying to a man? What makes us think we will get away with it? We know by this that we are not lying to a man but to the Holy Spirit. We also know that if you lie, the Holy Spirit will tell on you.

  25. Greed kills

    Acts 5:5
And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear came over all who heard of it.

Bc of greed they conspire to lie to the church and look good in the site of the people. they died for this lie. This event strengthened the faith of the witnesses. Greed will always create other sins to accompany it.

  26. 1 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
We should rejoice when others condemn us for our beliefs instead of getting angry

  27. 15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.

16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

Every one…what a testimony to their faith and God’s ability and willingness to heal!

17 Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,

We should rejoice with those that are being blessed, lest God withdraw the blessing He has in store for us.

  28. You may be able to deceive and lie to everyone else, but that won’t fly past the Holy Ghost. Sometimes we convince and deceive ourselves, but the Holy Ghost will bring out the truth. There is nothing better then knowing the truth. There is freedom in truth.

  29. The Shadow Of The Church

The works of the Lord became so sought that people desired even to have simply “the shadow of the church” as Peter passed by. Wherever we go is an opportunity to bring Jesus to those who need Him. It’s easy to look on big miracles and think of a wild Sunday night service with the Spirit moving and passionate prayer and worship, but even the passing by of the shadow of the church out on the streets brought hope and multitudes found miracles in the midst of the harvest.

I think of how even in our everyday lives, we have the opportunity to see God touch lives and bring about His mighty works. We must not underestimate what God can do even as we go about the mundane day-to-day parts of life. That trip to the bank, the after-work Walmart run, the hasty drivethrough lunch break… If God can use the shadow of the church for His work, then can’t He use even the parts of our lives that are less than glamorous and exciting for His purpose?

    Colossians 4:5 AMP
Behave yourselves wisely living prudently and with discretion in your relations with those of the outside world the non-Christians, making the very most of the time and seizing buying up the opportunity.

  30. 38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:

39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

The will of God will always prevail. The works of God’s kingdom will go forth and accomplish the desires of our Lord. This verse reminds me of what pastor said about a saying from bishop Foster, “you’re either part of the problem or part of the solution.” It is our choice to stand on one side but all must know that a work of God will alway have victory.

Matthew 16:18 Now I say to you that you are Peter which means ‘rock’, and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

  31. 38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.
42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

Even beating the disciples couldn’t keep them quiet. They already knew the Lord had given them a mission & that he could deliver them from the priests or from prison. The more they get delivered the more witnessing they can do! Persecution always spreads his word faster. We must be church no matter what.

  32. 29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Stop worrying about what people say. Your focus should be on Gods word.

  33. Ananias and Sapphira

The crime these early church members commit is a matter of the heart. The act is gracious from all outward appearances, not so different from the gift Barnabas offered (Acts 4: 36-37). Barnbas sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles. There is no commentary if the early church made an announcment to recogize Barnabas with a pat on the back for his large donation. Apparently the church leaders recieved the gift with joy. Ananias and Sapphira also sell a piece of their property and voluntarily bring ‘some’ of the money to the disciples. Sin enters the picture when they lie about their gift. Maybe they wanted the glory of being recognized like Barnabas. However, they present it as if they are giving the entire ammount, but in reality they are holding some back. In this they sin against God. They act one way, but in their hearts harbor deception.

The punishment is immediate and severe, providing a clear message to the young church on the dangers of deception and hypocrisy. Fear grips the whole church, and God’s purpose is fulfilled: They understand the message and take seriously the need for truth to reign in the new church.

  34. This chapter spoke to me about never letting anyone silence my praise. As Peter replied in verse 29 CEV “Peter and the apostles replied: We don’t obey people. We obey God.” We too must be like verse 42 CEV “Every day they spent time in the temple and in one home after another. They never stopped teaching and telling the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.”
