Acts 8

1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

8 And there was great joy in that city.

9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.

11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.

24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

Christ living in us his sprit living in us makes us mighty men and woman of God. Laying of hands and only by Gods power are we able to heal. We are anointed. We should never take Gods glory it all belongs to him not us.

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

Even though they had repented and were baptized that was not enough they also had to have the the Spirit of God with in them

  3. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

Simon was looking for power and was willing to pay money for that power. Peter said unto him you are in the gall of bitterness, because you want power over people. His desire was not to help people, but for them to think he was some great one. Peter said you will have no part nor lot in this matter.
We need to always be humble and allow God to move in our lives, give God all the honor. When we get the honor we loose our reward.

    Matt 6:1
6:1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

  4. 3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

Perhaps the church was getting used to having church. Maybe they thought they had it made as long as they could have good church.

They were in an awakening. People were receiving miracles, but so many were not being reached.

So God allowed havoc to come upon the church. People were forced to flee for their lives. Though at first it seemed like just unfair persecution they were really being sent out on to the mission field.

Through the persecution other nations began to hear the preached word of God for the first time.

Calamity, chaos, and havoc isn’t always what we think it is.

  5. Vs. 26, “And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.”
Vs.27, “And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the chrarge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,”
Vs.28, “Was returning, and siting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.”
Vs.29, “Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.”
Vs.30, “And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?”
Vs.31, “And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he disired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.”

After they read the scriptures and the Ethiopian eunuch asked Philip a question, verse 35 says, “Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto thim Jesus.”

This passage of scripture made me think of Romans 10:14-15 & 17 which says, 14. “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” 15.”And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things.” 17.”So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

This is why it is so important to READ God’s word, STUDY God’s word, MEMORIZE God’s word, and KNOW God’s word, because God is going to SEND us out; he’s going to tell us to GO and be a witness for him. He’s going to send us to our jobs, to stores, resturants, to the park, or he may even have a specific place he tells us to GO, but where ever it is, we need to be ready. I had an opportunity yesterday at the Dollar Tree to share God’s word with the cashier. She was telling me how she was sharing some Bible stories with her son who is 5, but she was getting her Bible characters mixed up with her stories. This gave me an opportunity to share the TRUTH with her, and she even asked me about other people in the Bible.

  6. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

The ability to lay hands on someone and for them to receive the Holy Ghost is a gift that can’t be bought with cash. It is a gift that is given through a process of growth in the faith.

  7. vs 24 Simon did not hesitate to listen to the man of God in his rebuke of his request and asked that he pray to God for him. He did not understand that he himself could go to God as we all can and ask forgiveness of our sins.

  8. 30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

Eveytime we teach a Bible study we are following in these footsteps. We must take the time to make sure they understand the Word of God.

  9. 34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

This shows the importance of a bible study. If Philip had not taken the time out to teach this man and baptize him, he might have still been lost. Home bible studies are how souls are won to Christ. This word is not for saints to just hold on to, but we have got to get the message across to others. Let’s not ever forsake the power of a home bible study.

  10. PREACH JESUS

5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

While we live in a society that offers tremendous acts of religious entertainment and prosperity, feel good churches with greedy leaders. This is nothing new to the Kingdom of GOD. As we follow the path of Phillip we see that by preaching JESUS supernatural signs followed along with hunger for the word of GOD and salvation.

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

We need not attempt to impress the world with production as we pray, fast, increase our knowledge of the WORD of GOD we will witness the LORD impress the world through HIS great acts of supernatural LOVE and SALVATION.

  11. FAITH + OBEDIENCE = SALVATION

How uncommon for Philip to be instructed to go down certain road in the middle of nowhere. He found there not a beggar but a very successful man with great influence that was actively seeking answers. Philip wasted no time with attempting to impress the man of great influence, he simply shared JESUS.

May we all possess FAITH to live in this level of OBEDIENCE that we will GO and share JESUS that SALVATION may be experienced and witnessed by multitudes in the region of Fort Worth, TX

  12. The reason why we MUST have revival continuously!!!!!!

Hebrews 13:8 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
Number 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
Hebrew 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

So what does all this establishes? That God by all definition is TRUTH, that by HIS Word alone we are to live, and THAT ALL HIS PROMISES ARE TO COME TO BE. That is why we MUST continue to live in revival everyday, so many can be added and saved for the Glory and Honor of our Lord JESUS CHRIST.

  13. Blogging: Evangelism In Disguise

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

    Romans 10:14-17
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

The Word has gone out through the earth but the church must still minister the Word. But how can we minister if we don’t know it? Looking at this passage earlier, I realized how the POFW Blog is another evangelism tool in disguise. As we go through the Bible together, God prepares us for those souls we will encounter who are like the eunuch.

There are many people in Fort Worth “reading Isaiah” but lacking understanding. Like Bro Cornwell said, Texas doesn’t have “unsaved” folk, but somehow the Word must get through the false doctrine and twisting of scriptures and deceptions so the truth of the gospel can reach them. We don’t have to be Bible scholars to reach a soul, but someone needed to teach that eunuch about what Isaiah was talking about; somebody has to be there to teach, so why not eat the Word?

It’s not enough to just know Acts 2:38 for ourselves; we are called to reach the lost and we never know what God may use from personal Bible studying to reach a soul, but we gotta be getting in the Word first for that to happen. Blogging blesses us, it blesses the church, and it can even bless the lost as “evangelism in disguise.”

    2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

  14. “If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest”. They believed, and as such they acted. One can, and one will, if one believes; “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth”. What a mighty God we serve, thank God for his word! God bless Jerusalem and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  15. 26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

Phillip is sensitive to the leading of the Holy Ghost in this chapter when he is instructed to go down unto Gaza. There he finds a hungry soul, readying the word and needing further clarification for truth to be imparted into his life. Because of the obedience of Phillip, the man not over received revelation, but acted up on that revelation and was baptized.

God is calling us to become that sensitive to His spirit that He can continually direct our steps to people that are hungry, reading the word, but needing more understanding of what they are reading to be given to them, by Spirit filled, Holy Ghost led people. Who will God send me to today? I must listen intently to follow the leading of His spirit. Souls are waiting to be set free, they are waiting further instructions. It’s up to us.

  16. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

    Wow God is good.

I have been dwelling on this thought for about two weeks and didn’t even know it.

What are you willing to do for your blessing? When we hear this question ,we think of how much work or how much money? But what if it was time. We all have heard the saying,” You feel as though when you take one step forward, the enemy pushes you two or three steps back.”
Now this is a two story thought. The first story is Job. In Job 1:8,”And The Lord said unto satan, hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?” What if the reason your being tested is because God is allowing your enemies to see what you will do because of your hardship? So that’s the one step forward ,two steps back. But now from the passage of scripture that is on top. When Philip did what God told him to do. I looks as though it might have been our of the way from where he was going. But as a true servant he did as God said. So now it was going to be more time on the road for Philip. Now some would have said I’m too busy to do what God is telling me to do I have to be at …. But maybe it’s the test that will allow your blessing to come. My thought is this. If I get pushed two steps back and I’m fight with all that I have, maybe it’s the two steps that locks the catapult into position to rocket you further and fast than you would have gone by yourself. God transported Philip ,so why not us? When the enemy pushes two steps ,God picks up and moves 4 or more steps. Be not deceived God is not mocked.

  17. You can’t buy the Holy Ghost, and he’s not for sale. How can you buy a gift, given by God. Besides God knows what’s in your heart, and also the motive in your heart. He thouht he could use it for sorcery work. Only with a repentant heart and beliving with your whole heart.

  18. 31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

    Preach Jesus…
At all times, at every situation, to all people. I see here tremendous need for bible studies even at a greater degree now. Back then it seemed like the Holy Ghost was being recieved and sought after and it was not so intimidating as it is to some people now. There is always an opportunity for a bible study, wether formal or informal and we the church must be ready to respond with the Words of God and explain it to them. It is right, not all of us are called to pulpit ministry, but we all ate to “Go and make desciples” we must have the word in us to be able to share it with others. Just today during outreach I got the opportunity to speak to a soul that seemed to be troubled. We got talking and I introduced myself and my outreach pratner and told him what church we are inviting to and he seemed to know some about God and church, and pentecostal churches, but mentioned that the whole speaking in tongues was some what intimidating to him because he did not understand all that. I was faced with the opportunity of an impromptu, on the spot, quick bible study. After explaining some, I asked him he would like some prayer on anything to which he gladly accepted. We prayed for the man and his needs and ended with an invitation to church again. He was glad that we stopped by and shared Jesus…all glory to God. However, I feel even more convicted to prepare myself even more, to teach and share more… To go and preach Jesus, to whomever, whenever.

  19. 21 You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God. (NLT)

We must insure that we have the right heart and intentions in doing His will. Have a humbled spirit that keeps in heart the best intentions for all souls who need to be saved. All glory to God!

  20. 1-4

This first persecution had positive results as persecutions often have throughout church history. The scattered believers preached Christ and the gospel message spread as the church father tertullian said The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.

  21. Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. (Acts 8:29-31 KJV)

    Home Bible studies!
The man did not understand the scriptures so he asked someone to help him to understand what he read. What a joy to do the will of The Lord. It is God’s will that we would understand what is written in the Bible. We should ask God to open the scriptures to us. We should also pray to see who God wants us to speak to about the scriptures as well.

  22. 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

When people find Jesus and their lives are changed, there is great joy. But someone must go & teach Jesus to them. Go is what we must do…go teach. We have materials at our fingertips to use…why wait?

  23. iLove to eat the Word

As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

Amen, They were scattered abroad and preached the Word. Most would have scattered abroad and complained. But God had a greater plan than to cater to their comfort. God would allow the enemy to attack but in turn the gospel would spread like wildfire.

  24. Acts 8:14-17. The ministry of and John must be understood in the light of the unique historical situation. As at Pentecost, God is initiating a new work–the beginning of the church among a distinct ethnic group. The Samaritans were Jews of mixed blood whom the other Jews despised. At Pentecost, no human instrument was involved in the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Here God delays the outpouring until after the arrival of Peter and the laying on of his hands. Thus, the Jerusalem church and the Samaritan church are united into one work, one body. Without Peter’s involvement, this work may may not have been accepted by some jews. Thus schism was avoided from the start.

  25. for there was great joy in the city, dispite persecution of the church and sorcery , people responded to the word of God and believed and gret miracles and signs and wonders happened

  26. 3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

His ways and thoughts are higher than ours. We should always trust that He is working things together for the good, even when it seems like everything is falling apart. They were persecuted and scattered, but the gospel was spread.

  27. 31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

What a testament to the teaching of the word of God! You never know the extent of the effects of your teaching the Word!

Philip was caught away but his efforts I’m sure went far beyond the eunuch.

  28. The martyrdom of Stephen brings about a wave of persecution against the church. The eruption of conflict drives the Christians out of Jerusalem into Judea and Samaria. The same locations mentioned after resurrection and time before asscension in Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Coincidence I think not. Look even more closely at what happens and we see: :”Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.” (Acts 8:4). The early followers of Christ could easily have become discouraged. Instead, they are driven out of their homes, forced to settle in unfamiliar places, and react by spreading the gospel wherever they go.

Luke, the author of both the gospel Luke and the book of Acts, makes a historical observation in Acts 11:19:21. He looks back and sees the persecution and death of Stephen as the impetus for the spreading of the gospel. Stephen was a catalyst. Stephen’s passion is to see the Good News of Jesus Christ spread to the ends of the earth. His passion is accomplished through both life and death.

  29. Pray for me preacher

    Acts 8:24
But Simon answered and said, “ Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”

Most of the interpretations I have heard from this passage suggest that Simon the sorcerer turned his back on Christianity, but to me his story correlates with those in contemporary Christianity that ask the preacher to pray for them. They have a need and they say, “pastor can you pray for me?” This is the lesson that I favor.

People ask others to pray for a variety if reasons but two reasons with a positive connotation for the petitioning party are 1) they lack the faith or 2) they feel like the don’t deserve to receive an answer from God.

I chose the second for simon. He became a believer and was baptized but when he learned of the Holy Spirit he offered to buy it with money bc he digressed to his sinful ways. He saw an opportunity for profit. Peter discerned this and rejected him and told him to repent. Simons realization of his folly petitions him to ask for peter to pray for him so that judgement doesn’t befall him. The argument that Simon got his feelings hurt and turned away from God has no evidence supporting it.

Does nothing in v 24 mean forgiveness or is it referring to not receiving forgiveness?

It is plausible that he is petitioning peter to intercede on his behalf and we must remember to pray for those who are in bondage.

  30. Lord shine on me, help me to reach the lost and bring them to you Lord. I give you the glory Lord because it’s your Holy Spirit in me that humbles me to do your works. May your will be done.

  31. A Great Persecution against the church 1. And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Je-ru’-sa-lem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judae’-a and Sa-ma’-ri-a, except the apostles. 2. And devout men carried Ste’-phen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. 3. As for Saul, he made havockof the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison. 4. Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. 5. Then Phil’-ip went down to the city of Sa-ma’-ri-a, and preached Christ unto them. 6. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Phil’-ip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. 8. And there was great joy in that city.

  32. Verses 34-35 MSG “The eunuch said, “Tell me, who is the prophet talking about: himself or some other?” Philip grabbed his chance. Using this passage as his text, he preached Jesus to him.” We must also grab every chance we get to preach Jesus to someone. For as we see in this chapter, this gospel is for everyone.
