Acts 12

1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.

2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.

7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.

14 And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.

20 And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king’s country.

21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.

  1. 5. Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

Peter was kept in prison ‘except for the fact’ prayer was made…

We can insert any situation and prayer makes all the difference:

I didn’t have a job ‘except for the fact’ prayer was made…

I had lost loved ones ‘except for the fact’ prayer was made…

My children were sick ‘except for the fact’ prayer was made…

    1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJV
    Pray without ceasing.

  2. That was the last straw. God had had enough of Herod’s arrogance and sent an angel to strike him down. Herod had given God no credit for anything. Down he went. Rotten to the core, a maggoty old man if there ever was one, he died. (Acts 12:23 MSG)
Just remember that in all things you give GOD all GLORY, it’s never about you , it’s about His KINGDOM! Your kingdom will never stand against The Lord. Exalt His name and not yours!

  3. Peter could not believe what was happening, but those praying could not believe it even more. When we pray we should not be surprised at the outcome. If we are, then why pray in the first place. Nothing is impossible for God.

  4. 19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death.

Herod was bring persecution on the church, but thought himself to be more than he was. These people gave him much respect, even called him a god.
You would think with the kind of revival that was going on in the land no man would be against God or bring persecution against the church. Some people just don’t get it, my God is real and will not allow another to take his glory.
Herod was planning on bring more persecution to God’s people, even wanted those that were watching Peter put to death. Herod was a very wicked man, he knew about Jesus and his disciples, he just chose not to be right.
Look closely at verse 23 God smote him because he gave not God the glory and he was eaten of worms and then died, he suffered a horrible death. This happened because he would not acknowledge God and give him the Glory he deserved.
Persecution did not stop God the word of God Kept growing and
MULTIPLIED. Not just added but multiplied.

  5. Two disciples shared two destinies. One was captured, imprisoned, and killed. The other had a supernatural angelic visitation

Both happening was the will of God.

Both served a purpose. James went to his reward while Peter pursued his destiny.

No matter how bad it looks we are to always trust in The Lord. Whether good or bad he knows what he is doing.

  6. This chapter made me think of how we too sometimes pray for a miracle and pray for the miraculous; but, when we don’t get the instant response we want….we quit, not realizing that our answer is right outside the door. Everything is in God’s time, which is always on time. When you receive your miracle, remember to give God all glory and all honor; don’t be a Herod.

  7. A time to listen

It wasn’t until the angel had departed that Peter said anything at all.
When we are getting instruction from The Lord it is no time to talk but a time to listen. The angel said do and Peter did. The angel said go and Peter went. It never said that Peter talked to the angel at all. He thought he was in a vision. Our visions are just a glimpse if what Gods will is in out lives. It was Gods will that Peter go free but Peter had a chance to fowl it up with his mouth. We do good to study to be quiet and let God take us his way.

  8. YES!!!
12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying

House of prayer, We need more of these houses, better yet, our house should be a house of prayer, worship and praise……….
Thank you JESUS for a house of prayer, worship and praise!!! Only YOU are Worthy of ALL praise!!! I love you JESUS!!! HALELUJAH!!!

  9. Prayer still changes things. There is power in the name of Jesus to break every chain. Even physical ones. Why do we so often deny the power of Holy Ghost? We are afraid of power. Everyone one that I’ve talked to says that they want more power. Well you have the greatest power, the Holy Ghost. Use it. It’s a gift from God. It is God living inside you. Be blessed and use it. The power of the Holy Ghost and prayer are two great powers. And both changes lives everyday.

  10. Peter went out and followed him; he did not realize that what was happening through the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. -Acts 12:9

How amazing of a miracle, during the miracle to believe that it was all a vision. Kind of one of those “pinch me I’m dreaming” moments.

  11. From a fan to Idolatry

21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.
22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

Be careful who you admire, you can easily go from being a fan to idolizing it and becomes a sin. In the same way, ALWAYS give God ALL GLORY, ALL HONOR, AND ALL PRAISE for HE alone is worth it.

  12. SPIRIT LED DELIVERANCE

Reading this testimony again today, GOD brought me to a deeper understanding of how important obedience really is. One single act of disobedience or a moment of doubt would have cost Peter his life. However through total and complete obedience Peter found himself delivered and set free from the prison bars of bondage and the sentence of death.

Our deliverance and the deliverance of others that GOD will lead us to are as simple as FAITH and OBEDIENCE.

  13. iLove to eat the Word

I thought it would be good to clarify who this King Herod is since there were several mentioned in the Bible.

Herod Agrippa, also known as Herod or Agrippa I (10 BC – 44 AD), was a Judean monarch during the 1st century AD. The grandson of Herod the Great and son of Aristobulus IV and Berenice.[1] He was born Marcus Julius Agrippa, so named in honour of Roman statesman Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. He is the king named Herod in the Acts of the Apostles, in the Bible, “Herod (Agrippa)” (Ἡρώδης Ἀγρίππας). He was, according to Josephus, known in his time as “Agrippa the Great”.[2] Christian and Jewish historiography take different views of this king, with the Christians largely opposing Agrippa and the Jews largely favoring Agrippa.

  14. We must never stop praying and interceding for souls, lost or saved, because we don’t know situations that they may be facing. We never know when our prayers are breaking chains, even if it’s just one chain at a time, the time is all in God’s plan, they will be set free. There is Power in The Name of Jesus!

  15. When we pray miracles can and will happen. Our loved ones are depending on us to pray for them.It is our job to get serious in prayer asking God for miracles for people in need, believing that it will be done in Jesus Name .
We need to praise God and give Him all the glory for the things He is doing for us and around us.If you are a vessel that God can use make sure you give God all the credit for working thru you, we are only sinners saved by grace and we must reach other sinners so that God’s Grace can use them. I am truly blessed to be a part of God’s great church!!

  16. Reminds me of the song “There’s a promise coming up that dusty road”. We all have prayed for miracles and are waiting on some to come to past. Don’t give up hope for that miracle God is an on time God its his timing and not ours.

  17. Acts 12-16 Though the prayer of the church was fervent due to Peter’s situation (v.5 ), there was a deficiency in faith (vv.15,16). Evidently they did not believe God would answer in this miraculous way, or so soon.

v.5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

Thank God for a praying church!!!

  18. Plagiarism. An act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author.

21- 23 “And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him…”

Herod plagiarized God. We need to ensure that when we speak to someone on God’s behalf we give credit where the credit is due. If we tell someone the Lord says thus… We better be sure the Lord instructed us to say thus. On the opposite hand if the Lord urges us to say thus and we either do say anything or change what the Lord instructed; we stand in judgment.

Herod prepared for his speech. The scripture states he was arrayed in royal apparel. The scripture does detail what his speech was about. Likely, it was something about how he allowed Peter to go free, that Peter was a witch of some sort or that Peter was already dead. Any of these types of speeches or variations of these speeches are likely. Either way, the crowd loved it. They claimed the speech as divine or “It is the voice of god, and not of a man.” Herod thought, yea sure, why not. He paid the price for claiming Gods glory/mercy as his own.

  19. 7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

Even in the darkest times, in our lowest places where God is there is light. He’s our hope, our direction. Some are attracted to the light, others blinded, and some reject it. Regardless of the choice of others we need to share the light and live by the light.

  20. Vs.5, “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.”

Vs.12, “And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.”

Vs.16, “But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.”

This just goes to prove, when a church PRAYS CONTINUEOUSLY and BELIEVES together, MIRACLES are going to happen. Let’s not be shocked at what God does through the power of prayer, but let’s give Him ALL the Glory and Honour due unto His Name.

  21. 24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

Just like it says in the scripture, we need to do the same. We need to let the word grow in us and we can read it more and more and it will continue to grow. Because each time we read the word we will get a new revulatoin. Then how we let it multiply is by sharing the word with others. Which will create an abundance of growth in our world.

  22. v22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of man.
v23 And immediately the angel of the LORD smote him, because he gave not GOD the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and and gave up the ghost.

    Power of GOD’S Wrath
As powerful as he was he soon experienced a greater power of judgment and wrath.
The response of the crowd was flattering as they exclaimed ” It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.” Becoming lifted up in himself. Herod did not acknowledge. GOD and give HIM the glory .
Death came to Herod while Peter enjoyed deliverance . Freedom to minister
for Barnabas, Saul ( Paul ) and John Mark.
I say it was ” Revival Time” growing in number and influence addition became multiplication …… GOD ‘S WORD changing lives.

Thank GOD for HIS POWER today the Holy Ghost dwells in with the Church today.
We can exist and expand in victory through the power of the SPIRIT of GOD.

” Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world”. 1 John 4:4

  23. But while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him. (Acts of the Apostles 12:5 NLT)

The importance of a praying church is so critical and crucial. We need each other we need one another’s prayers, on another’s encouragement we need the church body it’s very important.

So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” (John 13:34, 35 NLT)

  24. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

    The prayer room…
I could not help but to think of the prayer room over and over as I read this verses a couple of times. It says that prayer was made continually without ceasing. Why were they praying? Peter was kept in prison. How many of God’s people are in such place? A spiritual prison, our visitors at church, family members, friends, even the ones already in church… “But”, except for the fact that, prayer was made. I can just imagine the effects of a fervent prayer room just before service. Prayers that set forth the atmosphere for God’s glory to come in the angels to stand ready for the voice of the master waiting for the command. Touch that individual and that person in a response of praise, moving in faith their chains are immediately broken loose! They’re free. Except for the fact, that it starts with prayer.

    James 5:16
    New King James Version (NKJV)
16 Confess your trespasses[a] to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

    All Glory to God

21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

We must remember at all times who the creator is. Who has power over your life. To Him all honor and glory and praise. Those accomplishments or how God uses you as a vessel the great things He does or the Words He puts in your mouth that have a great effect, it is all Him. Without Him we are only dust.
La Gloria es tuya Señor! The Glory is Yours Lord!

  25. Herod’s Death

Herod’s sudden and shocking death raises two imediate questions: Why? and How? As for the why, Luke helps us understand by letting us know that this is a divine judgment by the hand of God through an angel. Interestingly, the first-century Jewish historian Josephus gives a similar account of Herod Aprippa’s death in A.D. 44. Both Luke and Josephus are clear that his death is a sign of divine judgment against Herod’s ungodliness.
Luke is even specific about the way God’s righteous judgment falls on. Herod, stating that Herod dies from an infestation of some sort of worm, probably intestinal roundworms. If this was the case, Herod’s body would have been infested by worms that causing an excruciating painful death. All because He would not give praise to God. Spiritual death can happen when we don’t give God praise. If we hold back our praise the stones will cry out. Never let a rock cry out in your place. Live and give God the praise He is due.

  26. The power of prayer ! When we feel like we have done it before and nothing seem to happen do it again! P.U.SH my God is a miracle working God. Your Labour is not in vain!

  27. 16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

Just keep knocking, stay consistent, do what is right and God will open up the door.

17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

Cause others to see how he opened the prison doors for you. If he did it for you he can do it for them. Testify and tell the world of the goodness of Jesus!

  28. loved reading it my favorite verse was Acts 12:17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place. keep posting new chapters love the blog ;]

  29. Prayer!

    Acts 12:5
So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God.

Prayer releases people from prison. It loosens the chains from people. It breaks bondage, frees captives, and leads them to the saints of God.

  30. Break-Out

7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

God’s light can break-out in a situation even when we don’t expect it. Peter was asleep for one, but even so the recent murder of James might have left him questioning if his end would be escape or death. But God had a destiny for Peter that called for his deliverance. As God’s light broke out in the middle of it all, Peter’s break-out from captivity was set into play. Things may look discouraging and even hopeless in the natural but our trust should be in God and we should wait on His light to reveal our path.

    Psalm 27:14
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

  31. 1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. 2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

We cannot be a man-pleaser. Scripture says you cannot serve God and mammon. We must make a choice whose voice we will listen to and who we will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

  32. “But prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him”. There was a need, and as such they united, and prayed together. One can see how; chains can be loosed, prison gates can be open, and souls can be delivered when there is a unity. The impossible is still possible, when there is unity and prayer without ceasing. What a mighty God we serve, thank God for his word! God bless Jerusalem and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  33. 16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

The church was having an all night prayer meeting for Peter but were astonished when Peter showed up at the door. After having lost James to Herod’s evil plan they were fearful for Peter now too.

Sometimes our prayers are answered so quickly we can’t believe it…while other prayers have not been answered although we’ve prayed them a long time. Either way, God is on the throne & he knows exactly what he’s doing! In his timing he will answer our heart’s cry. Thank you Jesus for hearing & answering all my prayers…even the ones that are in the works now!

  34. 23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

Be careful who you are glorifying. God is the maker of all things, without Him we are nothing. We need to give Him all the glory!

  35. Peter delivered from prison 4. And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. 5. Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. 6. And when Her’-od would have brought him forth, the same night Pe’-ter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. 7. And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Pe’-ter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. 8. And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me, 9. And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. 10. When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.
