Acts 17

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

33 So Paul departed from among them.

34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

  1. 23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you
    to the unknown God…
    Paul after seeing the inscription on the altar realized that the people of Mars Hill was worshipping a god they truly did not know. it’s important for us to understand who you are worshipping and to whom we are pledging our spiritual allegiance to. we should be serving the one and only true God Jesus Christ. as the command says ”you shall love the Lord thy God with all thine heart and only him shalt thy serve”

  2. 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

    God hath made one way to get to God, one blood of all nations. We should seek after him and feel after him because he is not far from any of us.
    We should allow God access to all parts of our lives, because in him we live and move and have our beings.
    The word here teaches us that God is not like gold or silver in value, not an imagine that we can see. God has told us not to worship idols, but worship the Lord our God only.
    We are told not to put things ahead of God in our lives, but to place God where he should be in our lives.
    First

  3. For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. (Acts 17:28 KJV)

  4. HALELUJAH!!
    6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

    These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
    THIS IS WHAT US, THE POFW WILL DO!!! THEY TURNED THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN!!! HALELUJAH!!!
    WE GOT THE VICTORY!!! HALELUJAH!!! THANK YOU JESUS!!! I BELIEVE IT!!! DO YOU???
    I PRAISE YOU JESUS, THERE IS NO ONE LIKE YOU!!! I PRAISE YOU OHHH LORD!!! THANK YOU DADDY!!!

  5. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

    Readiness of mind – eagerness, a predisposition

    Searched the scriptures daily – investigate, scrutinize, interrogate

    The people of Berea were open to learn new things, and not willing to accept anything that wasn’t the God’s honest scripture. They had the heart of a student.

    They refused to just listen, and be entertained. They were uninterested in just good preaching. They heard the word, took note, and then found it for themselves!

    2 Timothy 2:15
    Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

  6. 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

    He is our Father; without him we can’t live, move, or even be.

  7. 6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

    What would it take for us to shake our world? We can be world changers, we just have to have the want to do so. The past month we have heard many great teachings and preachings of how to do this. Now it is up to us to do so.

  8. I pray that the same can be said about POFW, that we have turned the world up side down.
    6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
    30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

    31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

    The time has come when all ignorance must end and the Lord will come judge us accordingly.

  9. WE ARE NOTHING WITHOUT JESUS

    We learn through the BOLDNESS of Paul and the POWER of the WORD of GOD that TRUTH provokes results. Some are moved to repentance, some are angered with reality while others attempt to escape, ducking and dodging the reality of TRUTH.

    Verse 27 teaches us that we are simply 1 PRAISE away from a MIRACLE!

    Verse 28 teaches us that WE ARE NOTHING WITHOUT JESUS!

    NLT
    28 For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

    We call HIM Father in Creation, Son in Redemption and the Holy Ghost in us TODAY!

    I cannot LIVE without HIM, I cannot make a move without HIM, I could not even be without HIM. This is one of the greatest TRUTH’s GOD has revealed to me. Pride and sin attempt to deceive us into believing that we can exist outside of the will of GOD, however TRUTH is we cannot. Loneliness leads to sin, frustration leads to anger, pride leads to destruction, and a haughty spirit to the fall.

    Get IN JESUS today, LIVE in HIM, make every MOVE in HIS WILL (WORD) and BE (Exist) IN HIS HOLY SPIRIT.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  10. I heard it said once during a traffic stop the speeder asked the police why he was singled out and the police did not stop all the speeders. The police responded when you go fishing do you catch all the fish?

    I was reminded of that story this morning. Paul spoke/taught/preached to the Jewish community in Thessalonica, Berea and Athens. According the scripture, there were some who converted and some who were outraged by his words. We as current disciples for the Lord should not get discouraged by rejection. Remember, it is not about us.

  11. iLove to eat the Word

    Acts 17:26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

    27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

    There are alot of crazy ideas and beliefs out there. This scripture makes a very statement if we catch it, and that statement is that we ALL came from one blood. God created Adam and from him all the other people of the earth came from. No matter what color or nationality we are, we all are brothers and sisters because we call all trace our family tree back to Adam…That kinda takes away all racial pride doesn’t it? yep.

  12. 9 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

    20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

    It is evident in this chapter to me that there are hungry people, just waiting for someone to introduce them to a Jesus they have never known. In addition there are people that curious about the christian ways, and if we are sensitive, like Paul, in this chapter to perceive that they are watching and waiting for someone to tell them the truth God will allow us the opportunity to minister to them the good news of the Gospel. Our question today is: Do you want to go Heaven? Lord let me find a hungry soul to compel them today to Your Kingdom!

  13. 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

    I couldn’t imagaine my life without Jesus. Nor do I plan on finding out. When we have Jesus on our side we are the winners.

  14. 27 “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us.
    28 For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ (NLT)

  15. 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

    Stir us up oh, Lord! Give us a burning desire to speak Your Word in our city. Let us call upon Your name publicly and testify of You. Paul didn’t just sit by and do nothing when he saw what was going on in the city. He was stirred into action. He was just as public with his confession of Christ as they were with their idolatry. We cannot just go on our way feeling safe in our freedom to worship Jesus. Unless we win our city for Christ, it’s only a matter of time before the sinful majority continues to press Satan’s agenda and restrict our rights to worship and profess Christ. Remember Lot didn’t win his city it overtook him and he had to flee with divine assistance. WAKE UP!!! and work while it is yet day for the night is coming!

  16. Self-Made Or God-Made?

    24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

    28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

    Psalm 127:1
    Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

    Reading v24 gave me an interesting perspective on:

    1 Corinthians 6:19
    What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

    The temples God dwells in are not our self-made temples of religiosity, but God-made temples of His grace and Spirit at work in our lives. Just as we people cannot say we make even our own children (yes our bodies are used in the process but it is God who gives us the breath of life and knits us together in the womb according to His plan, Psalm 139), so can we cannot say that we have made ourselves as His temple. We can do workouts, take supplements, even medicine, etc to improve our physical health and appearance, and we can go through all sort of religious rigors to try to look and feel “spiritually fit,” but we can’t do the work that is required without God. One clear example: we make choices in being born again (repentance, baptism) but it is God who washes us and gives His Spirit to us.

    Ephesians 2:8-10
    8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

    9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

    10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

    Being born again is a God thing, and living in His Kingdom is a God thing too. We can never go as far being self-made as we can being God-made:

    Galatians 2:20-21
    20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

    21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

    John 1:12-13
    12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

    13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

    We can’t get it right in the flesh, but God gives us power by His Spirit to *become* who we need to be by His grace. Through the process of sanctification, we learn to get *us* out of the way so He can lead us in maturing in right actions, right thinking, right speaking, right living… Doing it all in the flesh puts us in a self-defeating religious yoke, but depending on God allows us to *become* His children. It does not diminish the need for our right choices and repentence, but rather empowers them through reliance upon God. Being self-made can look good for a while, but what we need to finish the race and be truly transformed is to be God-made.

  17. 22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
    23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
    24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

    One LORD!

    No matter who or where you are, God has placed in each and every person the desire to seek out a “higher power”. Even the souls that have been decieved into thinking that there is no higher power, know deep inside that there is so much more to life than what they are expierencing currently.

    No one will argue that a life lived according to the principals of the Bible, is a blessed life. Even athiest believe that. But the struggle that so many people, even those of us in church, is to without question, do as He is directing us through His Word, and through the man of God in our lives.

    When we finially realize that Jesus has only the best for us, and His desires are for our best, then we will trust Him. Until then which god are we serving, money? Greed? Selfishness? Pride? Lust? We laugh about “To The Unknown God”, but do we really know what god we are putting first in our lives?

  18. vs-11
    The Jews were more noble because they v4alued truth and tested Pauls teaching against the standard of the truth the O.T. The Thessalonian Jews had been more concerned with the number of Greeks who showed respect for Judaism than with truth.

  19. Vs.10, “And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.”
    Vs.11, “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so,”

    Not only were the Jews prepared and willing in mind to receive the Word, but they searched the scriptures DAILY to make sure that the things they were being taught were TRUE.

    We too must be ready, prepared and willing, to receive the Word when it is taught or preached to us, and we must go search the scriptures for ourselves, EVERYDAY, to make sure that the Word we hear is TRUTH.

    We need to Read the Word of God for ourselves EVERYDAY, Study it, and Know it, so that…
    1. It can convict and correct us.
    2. It can heal us.
    3. It can protect and stregthen us during times of battle.
    4. We can stand upon the promises of it.
    5. Most importantly, we can share it with others.

  20. “Moved with envy”. There were many that were spiteful with hearing the truth. One must be vigilant as the deceiver has, and will continue to disrupt the word of God (Jesus), while he can; “If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life”. What a mighty God we serve, thank God for his word! God bless Jerusalem and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  21. 32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

    There’s always gonna be people who mock what you do or say or what you believe in. But the question is will you believe them and change to fit in or are you gonna stay strong and believe what’s right by the word of God and continue on and ignore the ones who mock and pray for them?

  22. Readiness of mind…..one word comes to mind “Study”.

    11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
    ——————————————————————

    34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

    Even when you do your best to witness or bring them to Jesus Christ. There are some that just won’t come, but don’t give up on them. Turn them over to the Lord and press on.

    “Be blessed”…………………………………….

  23. 32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

    33 So Paul departed from among them.

    34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

    The message must go on. As Paul waited in Athens his spirit was stirred up because of how that city was given unto idolatry. We can sense the emotions and passion building up in the preacher. His passion for righteousness kindled. I can almost see as he as soon as he got the opportunity, he preached his heart out….but what happens when the people don’t quite respond? At least like you’d like, whit that same intensity and seal.. The Lord tells us that His Word will give fruit. The Lord is the one which will make it happen. Just like we see here, some mocked others didn’t respond right away but others did react to the Word that was spoken over their lives. The message shall go on. The truth must be preached. I can almost think how preaches may feel to a non-responsive crowd. However as long as they did the will of God and obeyed Him, it is up to the people and The Lord. The work will not be in vain and God will give the fruit of the labor, the witnessing, the invitations, the testimonies given, the prayers, the message must go on.

    Isaiah 55:11 It is the same with my word.I send it out, and it always produces fruit.It will accomplish all I want it to,and it will prosper everywhere I send it.

  24. 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

    25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

    Thanks be to God that we can understand who He is. The more I learn about Him the more I reverence and respect Him. That He created the world and still has time to take care of us individually. Knowing that each of us have our own personality and likes. Hes so amazing.

  25. 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

    29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

    30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

  26. v6 ” These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also”

    In the face of obstacles, a mismatch group of undereducated new believers had a testimony of turning the world upside down.
    The early Church was divinely successful .
    We would be well served by examining and mirroring some basic aspects of the early church described in the Book of Acts.

  27. 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

    Paul new something about stirring up the gift of God that was in him. He encouraged Timothy to do the same.

    Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. -2 Timothy 1:6

    Each of us has a gift and calling of God. Not everybody has the same gifts, but everybody has something. Never feel intimidated by others and their gifts. Use what God has given you!

    For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. -Romans 11:29

  28. Vs 16 We too should have our spirits stirred when we see the wickedness of the world around us and stand up for what is right in God’s sight and preach his word.

  29. Which are you

    And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

    OR

    And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. (Acts 17:2, 3, 10-12 KJV)

    Would you fight for three days or search the scriptures yourself?

  30. Relate to the crowd as to not offend

    Sermon on Mars Hill

    Paul related to the people’s religion by proclaiming facts about their culture and their worship and preaching Jesus to them. We should try to find as much common ground with those who need the Holy Spirit as well. Rather than tell a Baptist seminary student he or she isn’t saved and that they need the Holy Spirit to make it to heaven, approach it in a manner that positions it as an opportunity to have a deeper walk with God. Even if it is rejected, you will avoid heated discussions just as Paul did in this passage. It is intriguing to see the evolving of Paul’s approach throughout the entire chapter. You can see he learns from previous experiences and implements that knowledge in future sermons. The same still happens today.

  31. Paul at Thessalonica 1. Now when they had passed through Am- phip’-o-lis and Apol-lo’-ni-a, they came to Thes-sa-lo-ni’-ca, where was a synagogue of the Jews: 2. And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, 3. Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Je’-sus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. 4. And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Si’-las; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. 5. But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Ja’-son, and sought to bring them out to the people. 6. And when they found them not, they drew Ja’-son and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; 7. Whom Ja’-son hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cae’-sar, saying that there is another king, one Je’-sus. 8. And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

  32. The Bereans

    As we grow mature in faith, we learn that it is healthy and responsible to ask hard questions nad dig deep into God’s Word. The Bearans set a marvelous example for us today. Their response is twofold. They recieve the message gladly and with eagerness. Yet they also examine the Scriptures to be sure that Paul’s teachings line up with the truths of God’s Word. Their searching, seeking, studying and willingness to dig deep and ask the tough questions does not drive them away from truth. It actually leads may to faith. We can affirm those who ask honest questions, and we can recognize the value of questioning the teachings of any person to be certain they are consistent with the Word. The Bearans provide us with an example to follow.

  33. 32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

    Some people have heard the gospel and still dont believe. Some doubt the end time is near because we have been saying that the end is near for so long. We have to first lead them to a relationship with Jesus Christ before they can ever understand what the word is saying. We cant put the cart in front of the horse and tell him to push. God is only revealed when a person sets their heart on finding him. If their heart is not calling out for the truth then they will not find it. I pray that God will cause our city to hunger for the truth and when we show up with it they will eat freely.

  34. 6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

    They will know we’re coming to turn this world upside down. In fact I’m ready for Fort Worth to not be the only city we impact, I want the world to know POFW is ready to impact everywhere! We are world changers !
