Psalm 42

1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

8 Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.

9 I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

10 As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?

11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

People have asked me that question before. Where is your God when a kid has cancer or when a dysfunctional parent kills a child. Is a hard question to answer. I thank God that I see Him in EVERYTHING, that all I do is lift my voice in praise and immediately I am in His presence with a heart full of thanksgiving.

  3. Thank you Lord for making me thirst for You Jesus.
I will always be thankful for Your sacrifices You’ve done for me.
Like when I was the filth of this world you cleansed me with the Holy Ghost. Nobody can do that but You Jesus. This Is why I love you Jesus. This Is why You’re my friend whom I trust. Thank you for giving me a testimony that You can only give.
    Thank you for yourWord today.

I went with them to the House of God, this is the place to go and carry your problems. If you cannot feel God? You should still go to the House of God and praise God with Joy and keep the holy day to allow God to bless you.
We must put ourselves in position for God to bless us and no better place to be than in the House of God.
God will never turn his back on us, we must understand this and allow him to take control of our lives!!!!

  5. 5. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

    11. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Sometimes you have to ask yourself, “Self, why are you so sad? God is still God; He is your hope and your health and you will praise Him anyway!”

    1 Samuel 30:6 KJV
…but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.

    I AM VICTORIOUS
Psalms 41:11 KJV By this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.

How do we know that we are favoured of the Lord…We know because we have the victory and we triumph over the enemy.

    The word triumph is #H7321
    רוּע
    rûa‛
    roo-ah’
A primitive root; to mar (especially by breaking); figuratively to split the ears (with sound), that is, shout (for alarm or joy): – blow an alarm, cry (alarm, aloud, out), destroy, make a joyful noise, smart, shout (for joy), sound an alarm, triumph.

Whoever shouts the loudest is the victor. Is the enemy shouting in your mind so loud you cannot worship or pray…or do you shout and praise and so loud it breaks chains? It’s all up to us, but I claim I AM VICTORIOUS.

  7. YES LORD,
3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.
5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
Regardless of the circumstances, regardless of how we feel, we must always praise GOD!!! MY GOD CAN DO ANYTHING!!! NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR MY GOD!!! HALELUJAH!!! THANK YOU JESUS!!! I PRAISE YOU JESUS!!!

  8. PRECIOUS MEMORIES

4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holiday.

In times of trouble and feelings of loneliness and fear, our strength and encouragement are found in our PRECIOUS MEMORIES of times of Worship with GOD’s people and the promises GOD made in that season, the VICTORIES gained in Christ JESUS.

Making every Sunday memorable is the key to PRECIOUS MEMORIES. The was discouraged and found JOY and PRAISE in remembering what beautiful experiences he had in times of corporate worship.

Somebody needs to tell sin, satan and fear. “NOT IN THIS HOUSE, NOT ANY MORE”

    I AM VICTORIOUS!

  9. 11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

When we really trust in God for our strength and our health, we have nothing to fear. We have no reason to be quiet, and no reason to be down trodden. When we really trust, He becomes our everything.

  10. 1 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

We find David in this chapter giving himself a pep talk. Sometimes we just have to sit ourselves down and talk to ourselves. Why be discouraged? Why be despondent? Maybe there are situations we would rather have turned out a different way. We must evaluate did we make the wrong choice and are suffering the consequences because of that choice? Or perhaps is God using this situation to mold and make us into a better disciple?

Regardless of the answer, we have hope that He will never leave us forsake us, therefore we have hope, yet shall we praise Him, in whatsoever state we find ourselves in.

  11. Winter

    Psalms 42:2
My inner self thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God?

    Ecclesiastes 3:1
TO EVERYTHING there is a season, and a time for every matter or purpose under heaven:

As we transition from spring to summer nature teaches us once again the principles of God.

We remember the cold chilly mornings, ice on the ground, and our breath floating in the air. We recollect the feel of the coat, and extra blanket. Perhaps even the grumbling of uncomfortableness that resonated within.

Yet while the season of cold, and death rested upon us something was happening in the ground.

The extreme cold may help raise low water, protect shorelines and wetlands from erosion, kill insect pests and slow the migration of invasive species. Plants become dormant and quit growing to protect themselves from damage, and freezing. Plants that died go into the ground providing nutrients for plants, humans, and animals. There isn’t much harvest and growth but much preparation for the next season.

In our spiritual winters we face similar things. We may not be producing harvest but we can plant. The seed will begin to grow when the season is right. Each season has a purpose.

    Is prayer difficult?

Then perhaps your season is to saturate yourself in the word more.

    Soul winning seems stifled?

    Teach bible studies.

    Not many to teach?

    Soul winning.

Learn the season and take advantage of where God has you.

  12. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? (Psalms 42:2 NKJV)

God I’m hungry for your Love, Mercy, and your Grace. Only you know how much I want you and how I thirst for you. I will never be satisfied. I want more an more of you!!!! I know your well never stops running. I got a hunger in my stomach for you God. A hunger only you truly know how I feel.

  13. Psalm 42:11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

    Encourage yourselves in the Word.

Many times we will go through trails but it is what we do through them that tells God our maturity level in our walk with him. As I read this psalm a couple of times and meditated on it, I remembered one of pastor’s recent messages and which he explained why we look in the mirror and say “I am victorious!” We are to pick up the bread and feed ourselves that we may not grow weary and faint. We need energy for our daily lives, how could we go with out spiritual food for a day. I am thankful for His Word that guides, instructs, and answers all issues of life.

Acts 26:2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews:

    Ephesians 5:19-20 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

    I AM VICTORIOUS!!

  14. 11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
When we have God on our side why would we want to be going around having pity parties and singing to the tune why me oh Lord what have I done to deserve this. Well wake up cause it rains on the just and the unjust alike. Sometimes we bring things on us that if we had listened to God we wouldn’t be in the situation where we are. God doesn’t expect us or want us to go around with a sad face and poor me attitude. I want my light to shine to all around me. You would be surprised who is watching you and taking notes on how you handle things.

  15. 4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

Having a habit of serving The Lord and living for Him gives us a foundation we can stand upon in hard times. If we only seek God during the hard times we have nothing to cling to telling us we have hope in Him. But when we serve The Lord continually, through ups and downs we see His mighty works in our lives and others as well.

  16. Face To Face

5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

That word “countenance” refers to God’s face or presence. We are familiar with the admonition to seek God’s face and not just His hand, that with seeking His face you get His hand as well, but tucked in this Psalm is the promise that seeking His face is not simply for the benefit of touching His heart or getting His hand but it is good for us as well. It says that it is His presence, not His hand, that supplies our help here. But how?

    Psalm 16:11
Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

    Psalm 42:11
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

We find being in the health of God’s presence becomes the health of our countenance. Perhaps a way to simplify it: when we get face to face with God, His smile becomes our smile. The thing about trouble is that it has a way of clouding our view of God, like a veil that keeps us from having full access to His presence. But when we keep pushing and break through that and cast off our cares and any sins that would separate us from Him, we get that face-to-face encounter that changes us and our outlook.

    Psalm 27:8
When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek.

    Jeremiah 29:13
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

  17. God your love never fails! It is bigger than any trouble we have. Your love lifts us up when we’re at the bottom. Thank you Jesus for a love that never dies!

  18. 11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Jesus you are the lifter of my soul, when my heart is hurting, my tears are many and my prayers are few you are always there. Oh my soul hope in my God for he is mighty to save and capeable in all things. Praise him for he is good during all tests and trials. Hope in him, trust in him for he will keep you in troubled times and high waters. Keep my heart buried in yours, heal my soul and bring me closer to you God. You are all I need.

  19. These are the things I go over and over, emptying out the pockets of my life. I was always at the head of the worshiping crowd, right out in front, Leading them all, eager to arrive and worship, Shouting praises, singing thanksgiving— celebrating, all of us, God’s feast! Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God— soon I’ll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God. (Psalm 42:4, 5 MSG)
There have been times where I’ve felt like this, but through it all The Lord has allowed me to stand! My relationship with Him can not be based on what God can do for me, that’s a one way relationship that never grows any roots. My relationship is based on Love. I can never forget how The Lord took me out of my deepest darkest moment of my life! I have a reason to worship and praise my GOD.

  20. 1-2 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

Certain studies show that 60% of the human body is made up of water. The same studies indicate a human can only survive three days without water. With that knowledge it is easy to understand the verses above. When the body is deprived of such a prominent factor as water the natural reaction is thirst. So, in comparison if the soul is deprived of the presence of the Lord it panteth also.

Some other interesting facts about water:
    • A vital nutrient to the life of every cell, acts first as a building material.
    • It regulates our internal body temperature by sweating and respiration
    • The carbohydrates and proteins that our bodies use as food are metabolized and transported by water in the bloodstream;
    • It assists in flushing waste mainly through urination
    • acts as a shock absorber for brain, spinal cord, and fetus
    • forms saliva
    • lubricates joints

  21. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God”. One should continually praise God (Jesus), and all the more when feels there is no hope. What a mighty God we serve, thank God for his word! God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  22. 5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

When I am discouraged, I will encourage myself in the Lord. I will think of past victories and remember that you dug me from a pit and breathed your spirit into me although I deserved punishment. You are a great God and nothing is impossible for you.

    Ephesians 3:20

King James Version (KJV)20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen

  23. 1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God! -Psalms 42:1

And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! -2 Samuel 23:15
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. -Matthew 5:6
The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. -John 4:15

There is nothing that can quench the thrusting of the spirit of man like the Holy Ghost.

    Here’s my cup Lord!

Drink daily from the well that springs up within!

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. -John 7:37
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. -John 7:38
(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) -John 7:39

  24. vss. 1-2 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

v2 My soul thirseth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

    Longing For GOD’S Presence

The Psalamist had a great desire and longing to know GOD, and to walk more closely with HIM.
A hunger and thirst after GOD will cause us to be more passionate for HIM . A seeking spirit will always make time for GOD no matter the sacrifice .
The Psalamist had a seeking spirit after GOD and prayed ” UNTILL” he found that relationship he longed for GOD.
So thankful it’s available for those that hunger and thirst after GOD.

  25. This chapter is summed up in the last verse.

11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

No matter how things look, we are always to be looking, happy, praising God our creator. Thank you Jesus that as we walk through the stuff of life that your name is greater and your blood is more powerful.

  26. So panteth my soul 1. AS the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. 2. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? Ps. 63 : 1 3. My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? 4. When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. Job 30 : 16 I Am Victorious through Jesus Christ Amen !!!! You Reign Jesus

  27. 11 Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues?
Fix my eyes on God—soon I’ll be praising again.
He puts a smile on my face.
    He’s my God.
:)When I’m down I know I can count on my God to raise me up!

  28. Verses 1-2 CEV “As a deer gets thirsty for streams of water, I truly am thirsty for you, my God. In my heart, I am thirsty for you, the living God. When will I see your face?”

Same verses AMP “A white-tailed deer drinks from the creek; I want to drink God, deep draughts of God. I’m thirsty for God-alive. I wonder, “Will I ever make it— arrive and drink in God’s presence?”

Just as when your really thirsty and nothing else will satisfy your thirst but water; we too should have that same thirst for the things of God to where nothing else will do until we are in His awesome presence.

  29. Verse 1.

    We need God.

Our desire for God should be like a desire to quench thirst. God, just like water, is essential for life.

He is the reason we live. We need him. May my soul throat for a relationship with him like my body thirsts for water.

  30. Psalms 42:1-2 NLT

As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?

We should always want more of God and seek more of Him, because we can always learn more. But we don’t have to stop getting more of Him when we leave church, we can get to know Him more even at home and continue the relationship. Where’s your relationship at with God?

  31. These are the things I go over and over, emptying out the pockets of my life. I was always at the head of the worshiping crowd, right out in front, Leading them all, eager to arrive and worship, Shouting praises, singing thanksgiving— celebrating, all of us, God’s feast! (Psalm 42:4 MSG)

We must never lose our praise. And we must refuse to live in the graveyard of “remember when”.

Come, let’s shout praises to GOD, raise the roof for the Rock who saved us! Let’s march into his presence singing praises, lifting the rafters with our hymns!

And why? Because GOD is the best, High King over all the gods. In one hand he holds deep caves and caverns, in the other hand grasps the high mountains. He made Ocean—he owns it! His hands sculpted Earth! (Psalm 95:1-5 MSG)
