Psalm 56

1 Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me.

2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.

3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

5 Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.

6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.

7 Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.

8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?

9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.

10 In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word.

11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

  1. For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living.

Lord help me to live for you every day, hour, minute and second. Keep my feet planted on the road that leads to you.

“8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?”

I found the following article on the internet and found it very interesting

Perhaps one of the most strangest requests recorded in the Bible, at least to our western minds, is for God to put our tears in His bottle. In the King James version, Psalm 56:8 reads: Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? Think about it–our tears in God’s bottle. What does this mean? I’m sure that all of God’s children, from the beginning of time when sin first entered into the world till the present time, have cried oceans and rivers of tears of grief and sorrow as well as tears of happiness and joy. Is Heaven, then, full of bottled tears?

It is a known fact that in Bible lands and other middle eastern countries there was a tradition that when someone died, tears of those present were collected and placed in a bottle. This bottle was considered sacred for it represented all the sorrow of the family and was buried with the deceased. Many of these bottles have been found in ancient tombs. In ancient Rome, mourners filled small glass vials or cups with tears and placed them in burial tombs as symbols of love and respect. Sometimes people were even paid to cry into cups, as they walked along the mourning procession. Those crying the loudest and producing the most tears received the most compensation. The more anguish and tears produced, the more important and valued the deceased person was perceived to be. In some war stories, women were said to have cried into tear bottles and saved them until their husbands returned. Their collected tears would show the men how much they were loved and missed.

So, the psalmist David was not a stranger to the ‘Tears in a Bottle’ phraseology. I think, that for the most part it is for our benefit that he uses such a strange expression–yet at the same time beautiful, endearing, and even poetic–to let us know that God cares and takes notice of us not only when we cry tears of sorrow, pain, anguish, repentance, confession, and joy but in everything we do and say. God notices all our wanderings in this short earthly pilgrimage of ours. He loves us so much and is ever touched by our burdens, our anguish of heart, and feelings of infirmities.

The New International Bible renders Psalm 56:8 more in keeping with modern-day thought and expression. Here’s what it says: Record my lament; list my tears on your scroll–are they not in your record? This document describes the things that are written in the Book of Remembrance, God’s exhaustive database, so that we can prepare now to have a part in it.

“A book of remembrance” is written before God, in which are recorded the good deeds of “them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.” Mal. 3:16. Their words of faith, their acts of love, are registered in Heaven. Nehemiah refers to this when he says, “Remember me, O my God, . . . and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God.” Neh. 13:14. In the book of God’s remembrance every deed of righteousness is immortalized. There every temptation resisted, every evil overcome, every word of tender pity expressed, is faithfully chronicled. And every act of sacrifice, every suffering and sorrow endured for Christ’s sake, is recorded. –The Great Controversy, Page 481.

The relation between God and each soul is distinct. His care to you is as minute as though there were no other soul to claim his attention. The psalmist says, “Thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. There is not a word in my tongue, but lo, O Lord, Thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me,” “Thou tellest my wanderings; put Thou my tears in thy bottle; are they not in thy book?” In the words of the psalmist is expressed the intimacy and tenderness with which God cares for his creatures. “For we have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” –The Bible Echo, February 1, 1893.

  3. 8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
None of my tears are wasted, He keeps every single one of them. He knows ALL my sorrows. All my pains. I Love You Lord!!!!!!

  4. 9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.
If God be for us who can be against us!!

  5. 11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

When we put our trust in God, we will not be afraid what man will do unto us. We must have our complete trust placed in God and remember that our vows are unto God.
We must always praise the Lord in all circumstances! God is so great in all our lives and we must allow him to bless us with living for him.

  6. Trust and be not afraid

    Psalms 56:3-4
When I am afraid, O LORD Almighty, I put my trust in you. I trust in God and am not afraid; I praise him for what he has promised. What can a mere human being do to me?

Trust is a legal term as well as a term of confidence.

“In common law legal systems, a trust is a relationship whereby property is held by one party for the benefit of another. A trust is created by a settlor, who transfers some or all of his or her property to a trustee. The trustee holds that property for the trust’s beneficiaries. Trusts have existed since Roman times and have become one of the most important innovations in property law.”

We have placed our trust in God. When we received the Holy Ghost we got the down payment, on the down payment.

    Ephesians 1:13-14
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation:in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

God is holding onto the rest of our inheritance until we are ready for it. All we need to do is meet the qualifications as a beneficiary.

    Romans 8:15-17
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint- heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

This statement has a qualifier. We must suffer with him.

Suffer means to experience pain jointly, persecution, sympathize.

If we are living to meet the qualifications of a beneficiary, joint heirs with Christ then we have nothing to be afraid of.

    Psalms 56:13
For thou hast delivered my soul from death:wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling,
that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

A friend of mine is retired from the arch diocese of the Catholic Church in Chicago. He is 62 and works for my company. He plans to quit in about 5 years. He is practically fearless. In the back of his head he knows that he has nothing to worry about. His pension is waiting for him, and his retirement money is setting him up. All he has to do is turn 66 and he can get the money he worked for.

We have an eternal reward in heaven. We don’t have to be afraid! We have the best retirement package out there!

This tells me that God is a no fear God. He has it all worked out where if we will just trust, and obey him, walking in relationship with him, that everything is going to be ok.

The great thing is that he wants us to make it more than we want ourself to sometimes.

    Philippians 1:6
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

  7. NO FEAR IN PRAISE

3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

Fear is a natural instinct that every individual is born with. We all possess the unique responsibility to manage this fear. While we are taught to FEAR the LORD, we also reminded that the spirit of FEAR is not of the LORD. The instinct known as fear is to protect us from harm, not to keep us from operating in FAITH.

Our adversaries use FEAR to paralyze us and keep us from GOD ordained destinies. We as believers in Christ JESUS use fear to honor, reverence and respect GOD, his Holy WORD and his Holy SPIRIT.

At certain times and situations in our lives, we may find ourselves in similar situations to where the psalmist identifies here in chapter 56. We are wise to have a plan or escape from fear, to overcome it when it raises its ugly head. The intimidating fear that causes believers to stop moving forward. We must allow the FEAR of the LORD to overcome the fear of the world, its system and its influence. We OVERCOME fear through PRAISE.

When you feel afraid, stop what you are doing and lift your mind, heart and voice through PRAISE to the LORD that made heaven and earth. You will find that fear disappears in PRAISE, there is no room of fear in the presence of the LORD.

  8. In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? (Psalms 56:11 NKJV)

If God is for us who can be against us? This world can’t handle what God can do to them. Why shall we be scared the battle is already won the war is over. The victory is in our hands…who shall I fear there’s nothing they can do to me to harm me. I have my trust in Jesus. So therefor I am not afraid.

  9. Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me.

2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.

3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

  10. V1…he fighting daily oppresseth me.

V2. Mine enemies would daily swallow me up…

V5. Every day they wrest my words…

This is why we can’t live for God just one or two days a week: the enemy works every day and if we let up just one day, he will find a way in. We must have a daily walk with God to keep ourselves strong and to stay under His protection. Cry unto Him DAILY.

    9. When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.

  11. v10 In GOD will I praise his: in the LORD will I praise will I praise his word.

v11 In God have I put my trust : I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

The Psalmist knew the answer to fear.
His trust and Praise was in GOD.
    He knew HIM as GOD.
Who is touched by the feelings of our infirmities , and had faith that GOD would move in his behalf

GOD IS our deliverer. As we dedicate ourselves in sharing the fruits of HIS
SPIRIT to those still treading a parched
path.. GOD WILL DELIVERER THEM TOO.

GOD is willing and desirous to give good gifts to those who ask of HIM.
JESUS SAID,” That everyone who asked for the Holy Ghost would receive it.”

  12. 9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.

I know from where my help comes from, it comes from the Lord and only him will I praise, and only in him will I put my trust if God is for me who can be against me, he will wait to deliver me from my enemies, he will wait until I cry out and call on his name that he may get all the glory for saving me, which hr deserves. No one can save like he saves, I will trust in him, I will wait on him, I will praise him.

  13. 11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

I put my trust in you Lord!

  14. NLT – 8 You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.

    Joshua 4:7
Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

Just as the children of Israel built a memorial to remind them of the great miracle of crossing through the Red Sea, our prayers are building a memorial to the Lord. How bad do we want to see our miracle? Are we willing to intercede? Fast? Pray? Call those things that are not as tho they were? Our tears are never forgotten.

  15. Vs.9, “When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.”

WHAT do I know ? That mine enemies will turn back away from me.”
WHEN will this happen? When I cry out to God.
HOW do I know this? Because God is for me.

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” Ps.56:3
Thank You JESUS that you are my helper and deliverer!

  16. vs 3-5 with God on our side we have nothing to fear. Trust in him and he will protect and save you.

  17. 11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

Fear paralyzes, we should never be afraid of the gifts and callings of God placed in our lives. Trust & obey and he will lead you by his spirit.

Trust Him, follow the leading of the Man of God and see God work on your behalf.

    No weapon formed………..shall prosper!

  18. “In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me”. One would be wise to praise and put one’s trust in Jesus (God), with everything and with every situation. What a mighty God we serve, thank God for his word! God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  19. God, you did everything you promised, and I’m thanking you with all my heart. You pulled me from the brink of death, my feet from the cliff-edge of doom. Now I stroll at leisure with God in the sunlit fields of life. (Psalm 56:12, 13 MSG)
Thank you Jesus, for seeing me through every trial!!!!

  20. 9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.
10 In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word.
11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

What are you puting your trust in?

This is a question I have asked myself many times. I often wonder how a non-believer can deal with the things of this life without knowing God. Maybe the same way they think how can we live life always in fear of making an unseen God mad. When we put our trust in The Lord, we shouldn’t have to worry. Although it might be human nature to so this, yet does that mean when we we are in fear of …that we don’t have faith/trust? How can we not trust the creator of the universe. He is real. He is alive. He is The Lord

  21. 4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

That’s right people can’t mess with me because I trust in God

  22. In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? (Psalms 56:11 NASB)

The more I read the more I understand struggle .

  23. Assurance of God’s Protection
v.9 When I cry unto thee , then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.
v.10 In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word.
11.In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

  24. 4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

Oh search my heart oh Lord and let me know if I am holding unforgiveness. JESUS help me. When we trust God and allow Him to take care of all our situations, the we have NO FEAR! Oh that I would TRUST you and FORGIVE others that I would have NO FEAR or WORRY!

  25. For those of us that seems like life is chaotic and in disarray, this psalm should encourage us. God is able to deliver and we can be thankful for his guidance. We are able to give him our trust because we can rest assured that he cares for us.

Pray, fast, read his word. This builds a relationship with Christ that allows to have the mind of Christ so that we can sleep through the worst storms.

  26. 11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?
In God I put my trust…
In life we feel like God has put its in some situations we could not imagine but every time He does He comes through I’m a mighty way and proves to us that he can keep our feet from falling. We know God is a deliverer because he has delivered its many times, see knew he is a healer because he has healed us many times. We know he is mighty because he has come through mightily for us

  27. 9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.

Sometimes all the stuff that we are going through in our lives is just God trying to get our attention or our prayers. If we only trust in him or pray to him in the bad times, he just might let them continue.
We should cry to him always , even when things are at their best. God is for us but the thing he desires most is our relationship with him. The thing we should desire most is a relationship with him.

  28. For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. (Psalm 56:13 NIV)

There is so much that we do not see that God has saved us from. We moan and groan about how stressful life is and forget about what’s really important. We need to take time out of our days to exalt the name of the one who has laid His life down for us all. He has and continues to do more than we deserve. Praise Him, thank Him, love Him, worship Him!

  29. Safe

3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

No matter what comes our way, our hope and safety is in God. The Psalmist does not describe God’s refuge as limited by *what* comes against him but rather it is a matter of choice because he has *chosen* faith in God. We need not be intimidated by the storm when we can *chose* to remain victorious in Christ.

    Proverbs 18:10
The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

    Deuteronomy 33:27
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

  30. In God will I Praise 9. When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me. 10.In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word. 11. In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. 12. Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee. 13. For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living? I AM VICTORIOUS IN CHRIST JESUS !!!!!! THANK YOU JESUS FOR ANOTHER DAY TO PRAISE YOU !!!! I PRAISE YOU IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH THANK YOU FOR YOUR HOLY WORD

  31. We are victorious!! If God is for us, it doesn’t matter who is against us! Nothing can take us down with God on our side!

  32. 10 In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word.

11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

I praise His Word! I praise the Lord Jesus!
I will believe the report of The Lord. I will praise his word that says I am an overcomer. I will praise his word that says I am victorious and more that conqueror through Jesus. I will praise His word that says I am healed. I will praise His word that says that he paid the price for my salvation. I will praise the Word made flesh. I will praise Jesus just because he is
