Psalm 78

1 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

9 The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.

10 They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

11 And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.

12 Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.

14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.

16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

21 Therefore the Lord heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;

22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,

24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

25 Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full.

26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.

27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:

28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;

30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,

31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.

32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.

33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.

34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.

35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.

38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!

41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.

42 They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.

43 How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan.

44 And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.

45 He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.

46 He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.

47 He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.

48 He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.

49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.

50 He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;

51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:

52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

53 And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

55 He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

57 But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

59 When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:

60 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;

61 And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy’s hand.

62 He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.

63 The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.

64 Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.

65 Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.

66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.

67 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:

68 But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.

69 And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.

70 He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:

71 From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.

72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

  1. Our undeserved direction

God continues to guide his people despite their rebellion. This Psalm reminds us of that by illustrating an outline of the mentality of the redeemed of Egypt. Likewise, in our lives, God’s direction is upon His saints regardless of their commitment to Him. His guidance at times may be in wrath in order to bring us into a place of repentance. Regardless of the situation, if God has not forsaken us in our rebellion, He is there illustrating a scenario that will lead us to redemption and give him the glory. Even while we were dead in sin, He died for us. His sacrifice on the cross, though undeserved, gave us direction to eternal life.

vss. 70-72. He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance .
So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfuliness of his hands.

GOD chose David from the least in his family. David knew GOD’S delivering power as a shepherd . He also was a leader that understood the heartbeat of GOD; he fought giants who threatened his people and internal failures that seemed to threaten the promises of GOD.
Yet the sovereign LORD’s WORDS are always yea and amen .

So what are we waiting for?
    Claim tour promises TODAY !!!

HE IS FAITHFUL and RIGHTEOUS .

JESUS IS WILLING TO REDEEM US . HE paid the full price at Calvary . To set us free from the bondage of sin.

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in CHRIST JESUS:
    Whom God had set forth to be a propitiaton through faith in his blood, to declare his righteouness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God ;
To declare , I say, at this time his righteousness : that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in JESUS..

  3. TEACH

Last night as my husband was working on the buses I had the great privilege to sit with the youth group during their bible study. During the fellowship time, in front of me there were sitting 2 young men; Joseph Daniel and Joshua Jacob, since I did not know them I asked their names. To which I reply, Oh my you guys got some strong names, so they asked me why? I reply telling them the story behind their names. They have heard about Joseph, but didn’t remember Daniels, Joshua, and Jacob. At the end both of them were talking to each other boasting about their name. Why am I telling you this? Because, we should take every opportunity to teach our children about God, and what the men of God have done. When this boy grow up, if they name their boys after themselves, they will be able to tell them who they are name after and the experiences that they went through to serve God. I LOVE TEACHING.

  4. 53 And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

God is telling how he kept the children of Israeli and guided them and comforted them through all their trials. God brought his people out of Egypt but never got Egypt out of his people. They were kept by the great providence of God, and yet they had no faith. God brought them to the border of the promised land and they never passed over because of their faith or should I say no faith.
These people provoked the Lord God of Israeli and could not keep his testimony. We need to make sure of all things, the word teaches us to make our calling and election sure. Let’s step up to the plate and do what God wants us to do with faith in God.

  5. iLove to eat the Word

The following verses are very interesting

4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

***These verses are interesting for the fact that if we do not take the time to teach our children the word of God then whole generations will forget God. This is where America is today. There really are people in America that have no clue who Jesus is. There are people that have never heard the Bible at all. We are commanded to teach our children about God.

  6. 1 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

This chapter is very powerful, God wants everyone to know that he is the Lord of Lord, King of Kings, follow his commandments and have faith in him. Sin is where the Egytians turned to, Israel worshipped other God’s because they had no faith. What they were doing wasn’t what God commanded, they wanted solutions right now when it didn’t come to pass they turned away from God in disbelief and turned to sin. God loves his people, but people don’t follow his commandments nor teach their own people about God.

Our children learn from us we must be the example that God wants us to be and teach them to love God with all their hearts and soul and to always have faith and trust in God.

  7. He brought them to the border of his holy land, to this land of hills he had won for them. He drove out the nations before them; he gave them their inheritance by lot. He settled the tribes of Israel into their homes. But they kept testing and rebelling against God Most High. They did not obey his laws. They turned back and were as faithless as their parents. They were as undependable as a crooked bow. (Psalms 78:54-57 NLT)

*Wow after all that God brought them through they still couldn’t believe in him or even depend on him to feed them. He destroyed opposing countries that came against you. He lead you out of slavery and captivity.

They angered God by building shrines to other gods; they made him jealous with their idols. (Psalms 78:58 NLT)

*Then you decide to praise a different God. After everything God has done for you just for you can be protected and happy. You turn away from the one true living God. He owe him your life.
So now when there’s horrible tribulations in your life you know exactly why cause your turned from the helping hand that was there all along.

You should praise him everyday for the rest of your life cause you owe it to him for bringing you out of Egypt and for taking care of you. Don’t abandon God cause he could easily abandon you. Which is even worst then you abandon him. You don’t want the wrath of God.

  8. The psalm begins with a call to learn from the nation’s mistakes in the past(vv.1:11). Verse 7 especially expresses the main point if the psalm: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God.

    Teach Children God’s Laws

God was Good to Israel in Spite of Unbelief

  9. What’s really important to you?

Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy. (Psalms 78:41, 42 KJV)

With our lustful desires we have “limited” the hand of God in our lives, the body, the church. We are living in a generation that feel they need to keep up with the jones , as pastor would say”give me, give me, my name is jimmy.” That is not a true relationship, that’s a conditional relationship. As for me I don’t want to hinder the hand of God in our lives! It’s my desire to have a true relationship with my Savior, to know him in my heart, to worship Him in Spirit and in truth, to grow in the knowledge of our Lord, to lay aside my will, and to submit to Him. It’s my desire that my children will do the same, as I told my son on Sunday after church that one day he’s going to be a father, not just any father, but, a Godly one, and he will teach his children too. He’s seen us in our ups and downs, but I hope that he sees our faithfulness through it all. In Jesus name!!

  10. CHOSEN

70 He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:

One of the most inspiring testimonies of the bible come from the unique way that David the 2nd King of Israel was CHOSEN. While his brothers were preparing for the prophet with their father, David was SERVING his father by tending, keeping and leading his sheep. This is a biblical look at the way the humble servant is CHOSEN, not for the gifts, talent or charisma they may offer but for the heart and passion by which they serve.

The message in verse 70 is be FAITHFUL in your call of responsibility, and SERVE, BE there and DO work. This is the field of disciples that the CHOSEN of GOD are selected from.

JESUS declared in Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

My prayer today is that GOD give us great desire to be his CHOSEN!

While being ever eternally thankful for being called, let there rise in our hearts the desire, passion and determination to SERVE until we are CHOSEN and promoted by GOD not by manipulation or man.

  11. 7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

I don’t want to forget all that my God has done for me. I don’t want to be as the people before me. I wwant to hope in God, trust in him and seek him with my whole heart because after all that he has done for me he deserves all of that and more!!!

  12. 5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

God help me to never turn my back on you and forgot all the things you have done for me. I will tell all generations about you Lord!

  13. Psalms 78:7-8
So each generation should set its hope anew on God,
    not forgetting his glorious miracles
    and obeying his commands.
Then they will not be like their ancestors—
    stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful,
refusing to give their hearts to God.

The only way that they will know is if we tell them. It is our responsibility to help them to set their minds on God.

What a tragedy for God to tell us the reason our children do not know him is because we refused to tell them about him,and what he has done.

  14. Verses 3-7
Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandements.

It’s important for us to teach our children the Word of God and tell them about the wonderful things He has done, and I love being a Sunday School Teacher. There’s nothing like teaching children the Word of God, telling them about His mighty acts, praising the Lord together, and giving them hope for their future. Then seeing them grow up and become great men and women of God (youth leaders, ministers and ministers wives, going out on the mission field, becoming teachers) and teaching others about Jesus. It’s exciting to know that you had a part in their training. It is so rewarding.

2 Timothy 3:14-15 says, “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which is able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

  15. 35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

This is a good statement. Remember what God has done for you. He is the altogether lovely.

  16. vs 32
It is not enough to be open about who God is and what he has done for us. It is also necessary to be honest about are own failings. How important for our children to know that he is loving forgiving God. His diciplines us when we sin but never withdraws his love.

  17. 72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

What a Mighty God we serve.
God knows everything and he said He would never leave us or forsake us.
Bless the Lord. Thankyou Jesus for taking care of me… I Praise YOUR HOLY NAME.

  18. 5 For He established a testimony (an express precept) in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, commanding our fathers that they should make [the great facts of God’s dealings with Israel] known to their children,
6 That the generation to come might know them, that the children still to be born might arise and recount them to their children,
7 That they might set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but might keep His commandments

We have been given such a responsibility to pass on to the generations to come the commandments give to our forefathers. Many have removed the ancient landmarks, because they didn’t understand the meaning thereof, or perhaps felt like they were no longer necessary, because they didn’t truly understand what they meant to past generations. We must take the time to teach our children, and our children children’s, less they should add to or take away from the commands of the Lord to please their flesh. If we don’t reiterate to them what God has done, and where He has brought us from they will never know the price that has been paid for their salvation, and if it didn’t cost you anything, you’re more apt to not take proper care of the treasures you’ve been given.

  19. “They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy”. They had witnessed many miracles, yet they remembered not, and it cost them. Let one remember, as there have been many miracles that have taken place today, just as there are many more that will take place. What a mighty God we serve, thank God for his word! God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all, in Jesus name, Amen

  20. 35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

These verses show the mercy of God in a great way. Did knew the people’s heart was not right before Him. He even knew they were telling him lies about their intentions. But He remembered they were just flesh and needed his mercy and understanding so he forgave them in his infinite mercy. What a merciful God! As David said over and over again ” His mercy endureth forever”

  21. Stay in line

52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

There is a reason for order, like in a fire drill we have an orderly plan of assembled excape. When we are led of the Holy Ghost we will fall in to line with our leaders and church to be led to safety . Those that want to go their own way will be caught in the fire.
Help us Lord to stay in line through the wilderness so that we make it through safely to the promise land.

  22. Importance of remembering

That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: (Psalms 78:6, 7 KJV)

Remembering the good works of Gid leads to salvation. It is like the gospel. It is good news. It us the good that Jesus has done for us. That is why we tell the testimonies of the past. That is why it is such great value for our children today to learn of Noah, Moses, David, Joseph, and Adam. There are so many great deliverances in the old testimony! Let us not forget the testimonies old the Old Testament. Let us not forget our own testimonies of how God delivered us and our families!

    Hebrews 3:5 (KJV)
    And Moses verily [was] faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

Tell of his great world to increase his mighty kingdom!

  23. 5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

Our children must be taught the truth about the ways of God and the things that can trip them up.There are things out in the world that the devil will use to trip them up, but they need to know we are over comers ,we can live a clean and victorious life with the help of God and the saints of God that will help them along the way .
Saints let’s show compassion for the sinners that come in and help them find there way to God, then we can help nurse them along until they are able walk in this truth and be Victorous over sin!!

  24. Pass It On

5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments

The life of covenant we live and the gospel we preach sets a foundation for the next generation to build from. We can either pass on the foundation of Christ given to us or a broken altar cluttered with the debris of sin and this world; one teaches them where to build, the other leaves them to dig and clean and pick up the pieces, if they choose to get that far. We cannot choose for them whether they will serve Jesus, but we are responsible for leading them there and teaching them what’s been given to us.

    Deuteronomy 11:18-21
18 Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.

19 And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

20 And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates:

21 That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.

  25. I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old— things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us. We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.

so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands. They would not be like their ancestors— a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him. (Psalm 78:2-4, 6-8 NIV)

Through reading this chapter it reminded me of how very important it is for us to teach. Wether you like education or not, we are all teachers and yet we are all students. It is our responsibity to teach the word of God to the generations below us. We need to consistently challenge our minds to grow so others may grow.

Someone is always learning from the choices you make.

  26. Children 1. GIVE ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth. Isa. 51 : 4 2. I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: 3. Which we have heard and known, and our and our fathers have told us. 4. We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. Exod. 12 : 26 Josh. 4 : 6 5. For he established a testimony in Ja’-cob, and appointed a law Is’-ra-el, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: Deut. 4 : 9 6. That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: Ps. 102 : 18 I AM VICTORIOUS THROUGH CHRIST JESUS !!!!! Jesus you love your children Hallelujah!!!!! I am Blessed to call you friend!

  27. Psalm 78:41, 68 Yes, again and again they tempted God,And limited the Holy One of Israel.

But chose the tribe of Judah,Mount Zion which He loved.

Our actions can be the ones that limit God to act on our behalf. I pray The Lord will not be hindered in my life and anything that hinders God in my life and me getting close to Him may be removed

I will yet praise and exalt His name
