Psalm 140

1 Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;

2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.

3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.

4 Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.

6 I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.

7 O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

8 Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

9 As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

10 Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

12 I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

  1. 7. O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

    8. Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

    10. Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

    13. Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

“Jesus, today you will save me…and destroy my enemy…and receive the praise.”

  2. 13. Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so! It is important to tell of the things God is doing for us. It is equally important to thank Him for what he is doing for us.

  3. 1 Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.

The wepons here in this scripture is not swords or spears but words be careful of the words we speak against someone.

  4. Purpose

    1 Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;

2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.

    Proverbs 18:21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

    Luke 6:45
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

The actions of the violent and wicked are not accidental or random but the result of their thinking and what they have purposed in their heart. Each of us has power over our actions and the choices we make and it starts in our minds and where our thinking leads us. Life and death are in there power of the tongue, but our words start from what’s in our hearts. If we are continually dwelling on evil and sin against others, then our lives will begin to follow suit and be shaped by our thinking and the words and actions that flow from it.

    Proverbs 23:7
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

We can only put on an act for so long; the reality of what we purpose inside becomes the reality of what’s outside.

  5. LIVE RIGHT

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

In the midst of abounding iniquity and evil, we are challenged and charged to keep the WORD of GOD near and dear to our hearts. We are called to live upright and righteous, which means doing what is RIGHT in the sight of the LORD regardless of the circumstances surrounding us.

A heart that is in RIGHT standing with the LORD, will always have a PRAISE on their lips to give thanks to the LORD for all HIS benefits. The promise abides that we may dwell with the LORD in HIS HOLY presence.

As we choose to LIVE RIGHT before GOD everyday we prepare ourselves for the promised destiny of abiding, living, dwelling in the presence of the LORD.

  6. “Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves.” One need only to open one’s eyes and ears and observe the worldly events, as now is the time for such a prayer. What a mighty God we serve, thank God for his word! God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all, in Jesus name, Amen.

  7. O Lord , shelter me from the power of the wicked! Protect me from violent men, who plan to knock me over. -Psalms 140:4

Proud men hide a snare for me; evil men spread a net by the path; they set traps for me. (Selah) -Psalms 140:5

The Lord is our protection! He keeps us from those who don’t seek the best for his people.

O Lord my God, in you I have taken shelter. Deliver me from all who chase me! Rescue me! -Psalms 7:1

Jesus, Today you will save me!

  8. 13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

We must give God all the praise and thanks for what he is doing and what he is going to do!

  9. How quickly perspectives in life can change. Yesterday David’s song was one of confidence in the Lord that everywhere he went and everything he did God saw all and knew all. Today we find him perplexed by the evil one who has compassed him about.

As challenging as life is, we must keep a “victory” mentality at all times. In the good or the bad, Jesus is by our side and we must never let our guard down for the enemy to bring discouragement.

“Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with…..”

  10. I said to the LORD, “You are my God!” Listen, O LORD, to my cries for mercy! (‭Psalms‬ ‭140‬:‭6‬ NLT)

Knowing that my GOD, hears my prayer, is comforting. I know that I can go to the rock of my salvation, and he will save me!!!
Take all your burdens to Him. And He shall be your strength, and comforter!!
My Heavenly Father loves me, and He will always take care of His own. Isn’t that what a Father does? He embraces you when you hurt, He picks you up, when you are down, He’ll wipe away all of your tears, He knows how to take care of His own!!! I am a child of THE KING…. Jesus!!!!
Through my deepest pain, the hardest decisions in my life, the greatest fear, HE is there!!!!
A FATHER, never leaves a child alone. Thank you JESUS, for Never leaving me, nor forsaking me!

  11. 12 I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.
13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

Live for Christ and no matter what circumstances come your way you are secure in His Holy Hands and NO WEAPON FORMED AGAINST YOU SHALL PROSPER. THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!!

  12. Keep me oh Lord! Let me not wander away but stay in that place you have placed me in. Put a hedge around about me.
4 Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

  13. 10 Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

    Let it burn

The fire will burn if your not carful. Many times in church we hear how the fire purifies us. This is true. But first the fire must burn off that which is dead and hinders us to be our best. So first let the fire burn ,then let it purify. The Holy Ghost fire.

  14. 3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.

As the scripture says, there is life and death in the power of the tongue, we must all be careful what comes out of mouth, for it can be used either for good or for evil purposes.

And we also must be careful on what we let other people tell us, cause it can affect our attitude, whether it be good or bad. Don’t be surrounded by negative people and let them influence your life.

  15. Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; Preserve me from violent men, Who have purposed to make my steps stumble. (‭Psalms‬ ‭140‬:‭4‬ NKJV)

If you want God to help you and keep you from harms way. If you really want his help and protection.
Then you have to really want it! You cant be partially wanting help(would you want partial help from him) you need to have a burden for his protection a true wanting. Give all of you to him. He will give all of him to you.

  16. 5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me.
Selah.

The proud have hid a snare for me: many people do not like to see the people of God prosper. They will set any kind of snare against them and their agenda is more important than anything else.
The Psalmist did what all children of God should do and what should become natural. He went to prayer (called my supplication) nothing in this world will replace prayer, for the problems we face.
We should pray first and then after we have prayed with supplication,

    supplication:
an act or instance of supplicating; humble prayer, entreaty, or petition.

When we began a prayer of supplication, an humble prayer. God not by my might, but by the strength you have given me.
Notice how the prayer goes Lord , the strength of my salvation, you covered my head in the day of battle. In other words, Lord I know you see what I am facing and I need your help, as a matter of fact you are the only one who can help me.
My prayer today is God let me never forget where you brought me from and help me remember where my help comes from.
    PRAYER

  17. God is faithful and never leaves me, he gives me the strength to go on. Thank you Jesus for saving me and never walking out on me.

  18. David calls to thwart the plots of the wicked and penalize them severely sure that he is committed to the righteous poor.

  19. This is a very good chapter to read before I walk into the halls of school where there are daily temptations and decisions that I have to make. And this will help me to be a light unto the hallways of my school and gear up for this battle

  20. 1 Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;

Thank you God because I can trust you to keep me ❤

  21. 1 Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;

2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.

3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.

    ….

11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

Words that destroy.  We see how no evil words are pleasant in the sight of The Lord or anyone.  We need to continually ask God to check our motives and examine our heart and put His words in us that we may speak life.  I’m reminded how the scripture stresses to bless those that curse us.  Despite of what is being done or said negatively, God commands to speak a blessing, speak life… After all He is not willing that any should perish but that all may come to repentance.  Therefore we must not be like them because God listens to everything we say.

    Matthew 12:36King James Version (KJV)

36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

  22. Psalms 140:5
    5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords;
    they have spread a net by the wayside;
they have set gins for me. Selah.

A gin is a snare, a trap, or a noose. How are traps set?
    Usually with bait.

What kind of bait would the devil use to set traps with?

Whatever desire he knows you fight off.

    James 1:14
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

    The word enticed means trapped.

He isn’t going to use something gross, or ugly, but something we are drawn to.

    Weymouth says in James 1:14-15
14 But when a man is tempted, it is his own passions that carry him away and serve as a bait. 15 Then the passion conceives, and becomes the parent of sin; and sin, when fully matured, gives birth to death.

This is why we must stand on the word, and obey God’s voice more than things we feel, or see.

  23. iLove to eat the Word

    Hedge of Protection
Psalms 140:4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

The word “Keep” in the verse is as follows:
    keep #8104
    shâmar
    shaw-mar’
A primitive root; properly to hedge about (as with thorns), that is, guard; generally to protect, attend to, etc.: – beware, be circumspect, take heed (to self), keep (-er, self), mark, look narrowly, observe, preserve, regard, reserve, save (self), sure, (that lay) wait (for), watch (-man).

The Lord keeps a hedge of protection around those who are his. He keeps the enemy from taking our lives, but we must fight for the promises of God.

  24. 4 O Lord, keep me out of the hands of the wicked. Protect me from those who are violent, for they are plotting against me. (NLT)

As school is starting up again I pray that You oh Lord would keep Your children in Your arms of protection and love. Help us to the positive influence in this world and not the world on us; greater is He that is in me than He that is in the world!

  25. v7 O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

Our faith and trust in GOD will keep us faithful and on the way of righteouness
    even when things go wrong.
We need each others prayers church family
It’s vital to our deliverance and the prayers of GOD’s people do bring results

    We serve a GREAT GOD!!!!!

  26. 4 Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

Such a great God we serve, who will keep the evil things away from us. You can’t fight evil with carnality , you must have a righteous mind and heart. No matter what the devil throws at me, my God is able to preserve me. Thank you Jesus for your love.

  27. My prayer

    Psalms 140:9-10
“As for the head of those who surround me,
May the mischief of their lips cover them.
    “May burning coals fall upon them;
May they be cast into the fire,
Into deep pits from which they cannot rise.

I pray this often in my prayers. I pray this over my life, my fiance’s, and Pastor and his wife. I pray this aimed at those who surround me that speak negativity or slander. It is important that we pray this for ourselves and each other. Let our enemies reap what they sew.

  28. 6 I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.

The Lord hears the cry of the righteous. His ear is not heavy nor his arm short and he is able to deliver his own! Keep a hedge around your people and keep our childrensafe & strong in you as they return to school! Thank you Jesus!

  29. The covering in time of war

7 O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

The military doesn’t wait until the battle is raging to cover themselves. They take every precaution known to modern warfare to protect themselves lest their weakness be found. The same goes for us as believers. Our Pastor is our covering for the spiritual battles that we face. If we don’t submit and fall under his authority we are uncovered. No one wants to be naked on the battlefield so why would we think we can go uncovered in our spiritual battles.

Take cover saints we are going into war.

  30. 7 O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

Almost every time someone is defeated, they first lose the battle in their head. We must guard our thoughts, because through Christ we are more than overcommers …

  31. 9 As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

The fruit of our lips will either be our build up or our undoing. What we say speaks volumes into our lives and others around us. There is power of life and death in our tongues.

    Matthew 12:36-37
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

It’s a wise practice to self examine the fruit of our lips today before we give an account for them on judgement day.

  32. 13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

If we become lukewarm then we are no longer living upright so this verse doesn’t apply.

    Fan the flame inside JESUS!

  33. Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;

2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered
3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.
God will deliver us from evil and evil speaking people. It doesn’t matter what they may do to you or even think about doing. God got it under control.

  34. Thou art my God 6. I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD. 7. O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle. 12. I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor. 13. Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence. I AM VICTORIOUS THROUGH CHRIST JESUS !!!! JESUS YOU STRENGHTHEN ME !!!!!!

  35. 9 As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

  36. God hears the cry of the poor immediately…

12 I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.
