Matthew 17

1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,

15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.

16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.

18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:

23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.

24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?

25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?

26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.

27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

  1. 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.

16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.

There is so many times in are life that are faith lacks, and I have found that we tend to have more faith for others then we do for ourself. Lord help me overcome my lack of faith. This scripture reiterate the importance of prayer and fasting.

  2. 2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

    WHAT A VISION!!

    Have you ever thought about being at this transfiguration and seeing what these disciples saw. Jesus, Moses and Elias;
1 Moses was buried and no one knows where
2 Elias was translated into heaven
3 Jesus born of a virgin and God his father

These were talking to each other, these disciples were so excited during this vision. Then a voice out of the cloud speaks to them. oh my they were afraid and Jesus lets them know it is OK, be not afraid.

Think about after the vision, they were told not to tell until after Jesus was risen.
This was a stepping stone for the disciples as we read the rest of the chapter.

21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

There will be some things that require more commitment than others! We must understand that we have to do what is required to rebuke some demons.
We should not be afraid, we got the power through Jesus Christ. We need experiences with God like this to increase our faith to the next level.

  3. Verses 1-13 MSG speak about how three of the disciples were witnesses to the glory of God and the revelation they received. Sometimes we too, need to just stop babbling and really listen, really SEE (seek) the greatness of our God to receive our revelation.

Verses 14-27 MSG talk about having a mere kernel of faith. Some wonder why they can’t get out of a situation, or why this always happens to them; why….why….why???? Well, verses 20-21 MSG say “Because you’re not yet taking God seriously,” said Jesus. “The simple truth is that if you had a mere kernel of faith, a poppy seed, say, you would tell this mountain, ‘Move!’ and it would move. There is nothing you wouldn’t be able to tackle.” Same verses in the AMP “He said to them, Because of the littleness of your faith [that is, your lack of [h]firmly relying trust]. For truly I say to you, if you have faith [[i]that is living] like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, Move from here to yonder place, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. [j]But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

  4. 3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.
4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

Have you ever been at church and experience the presence of God so strong that you keep lingering around church, hoping to just be able to stay around longer, until one of the brothers begin to shot off the lights, and then you have no other excuse, so you leave. It has happened to me before. Until one day I noticed that we can not wait around, or hang around, we need to go out, move, tell, teach, share the wonders our Lord is doing. It is when His presence shine on us that others notice, want it, and ask for it. We can not sit around waiting for God’s plan to take place, we must go about our Father’s Business and when it is time, He will step in and let you know. Until then, Go, Teach, makes disciples, for it is SHORT TIME and He will return soon.

  5. The hundred dollar bill in the ground.

    Matthew 17:27
However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.”

    Gods provision.

Whenever I find money on the ground, I like to think how it got there. Did God make it happen to be there by divine means or did someone simple lose it? The coin in the fish’s mouth appears to be divine. God was willing to do that for taxes. I believe he is willing to do that for other situations too.

  6. iLove to eat the Word

    “Sounds Fishy”

Matthew 17:27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

There are a lot of things in life that sound fishy and are hard to believe. For example, its hard to believe all the “Get Rich Quick” scams out there. (It’s also hard to believe that someone should give us a hand out if we are unwilling to work for it.) The truth of the matter is, “ill-gotten gains do not profit anyone, but righteousness rescues from death.” Proverbs 10:2 Holman Christian Standard Bible.

We can always believe the Word of God even if it literally sounds a little fishy…”take up the fish that first cometh up.” Notice that Jesus wasn’t worried how he was going to pay the bill. He knew the principle that if it was, “God’s Will”, then it would be “God’s Bill.”

God is not broke and his people shouldn’t be worried about being broke either. There are principles however. Peter was a fisherman before he retired and followed Jesus. So Jesus told Peter to go work at something he was familiar at in order to provide the money for the tax. Always remember, even though God is able to easily provide our every need, HE WILL ALWAYS REQUIRE US TO WORK TO RECEIVE THEM. “go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.”

2 Thessalonians 3:10 Holman Christian Standard Bible
In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you: “If anyone isn’t willing to work, he should not eat.”

    BOOM

  7. Matthew 17:20
If you have the smallest or feeblest faith that is genuine , you can do all things. The mustard-seed produced the largest of all herbs.

Hebrews 11:1 Now fairh is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

  8. 20 “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” (NLT)

Ouch, to be flat out told by God you don’t have enough faith must have been a hard pill for his disciples to swallow. We can never forget to exercise and evaluate our “faith meter.” Sometimes we forget and sit back when an opportunity comes and just say well God knows and if God wants to and He feels like it… No, we need to show God we have faith enough to boldly say “Lord move this mountain!” And then praise Him and give Him the glory whether it’s done or not yet, because He still is an on time God and the one in control.

  9. Let your light shine

Matthew 17:2 (Wuest – The New Testament: An Expanded Translation)
2 And the manner of His outward expression was changed before them, that expression coming from and being representative of His inner being. And His face took on a different appearance so that it shone like the sun, and His outer garments became white like its light.

This translation gives a clearer description of what took place. The inner light within Jesus showed on the outside of him.

Jesus gave us the example. When we are waking with him and living right and doing the right things we will shine.

Matthew 5:16 (Amplified Bible – AMP)
16 Let your light so shine before men that they may see yourmoral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds andrecognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven.

The word shine means to beam and radiate brilliancy. We will shine what is on the inside.

    Ephesians 3:16 (KJV Strong’s)
    16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

  10. 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Do you have faith? You got to have faith. Can’t do nothing without faith. In the name of Jesus my sister will be saved. I have faith that God will bring her home.

  11. “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible. ” (‭Matthew‬ ‭17‬:‭20‬ NLT)

Just as long as we keep our faith and believe. It’s our faith that pleases God. With little faith we can do anything. We bigger faith there is no doubt in out hearts so anything is impossible and it pleases God. I learned to put my total trust in him. Thank you Jesus for letting me know.

  12. “But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed.” They knew him not because of self. One must pray and seek God (Jesus), read and seek God, and heed the man of God, elsewise one might not know him. What a mighty God we serve, thank God for his word! God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all, in Jesus name, Amen.

  13. 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

We can do all things through God as long as we have faith. Never lose faith in God! He has a plan for each and everyone of us and as long as we never stop believing in him we will see the plan he has for our life.

  14. MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

How often over the past 26 years have I prayed and longed for miraculous demonstrations through prayer over bereaved, bound individuals. I have longed to see the bound sinner delivered and the fearful set free from their prison of pain. I have longed to see those handicapped by infirmity healed of the disease that torments them.

To know that my FAITH in GOD is Key to their deliverance is humbling and burdensome. Praying and Fasting must become more than christian duty. We are storing up FAITH and POWER through JESUS to effectively execute the miraculous.

JESUS clearly identifies the POWER problem as UNBELIEF.

20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief:

    Have FAITH in GOD!

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iBelieve
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  15. 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

For it is written Faith can move mountains, Jesus said to the disciples because you have so little faith you couldn’t rebuke demons. Nothing is impossible through God even faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains from here to there.

    Lord I seek you.

  16. Then Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of him, and the boy was healed from that moment. -Matthew 17:18

This chapter once again reveals to us that when we come down from our mountain top experiences we need to be ready to minister to the needs of others.

  17. 1-2
This unique display of Jesus glory was restricted to those who already reconized hi as Gods Son. As we we trust Christ we can exspect more and greater relationships of his presence and power.

  18. 27. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

Why did He tell Peter to go fishing to get the money? Because Peter knew how to fish. God doesn’t ask us to do things we can’t do, He just wants us to be obedient and do what we know how to do…that’s all He needs to do the miraculous through us.

  19. 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

A lot of us pray, but do we also fast as well in our lives? It can be a important part of our walk with God, especially when we are battling against evil spirits and strongholds that our trying to hold our families, our neighborhoods and our cities. We act against them by praying and through fasting.

  20. 5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

At what point does a person decide to listen to the creator of the universe? Is it when a cloud settles upon them and a voice booms from heaven, or is it when they are on their knees crying out to the only real God, and they hear that still small voice?

The Word says “my sheep know my voice”, yet it took a cloud and a loud voice before the closest of the twelve disciples were able to know that Jesus was the One. So, if the disciples , who walked with Jesus, struggled with faith, and with knowing that they correctly heard what Jesus had said, do we really think that we are anymore special, that we would know His voice automatically.

  21. Mistaken Identity

11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

In each of these stories, we see Jesus address mistaken identity. For a child of God, a case of mistaken identity can be eternally deadly. They address as following: 1) not recognizing who Jesus is to us, 2) not knowing Him accurately, 3) not understanding who we are in Him. The third calls out the issue of sonship more clearly but the other two also point to the root of mistaken identity: not having clear picture of God, ourselves, and what it is to have that Father/child relationship with Him.

We see three levels of consequences from not grasping these three areas properly: 1) an unknowing rejection of God, 2) an inability to live in the full potential of the Kingdom, 3) a religious form of Christianity that strips away relationship and replaces it with rote and rigor, which becomes a breeding ground for resentment and eventual rebellion.

    Romans 12:1-2
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

When God first breathed the breath of life into Adam, the first thing he saw was the face, the reality, the heart, the presence of God. But after the fall, mankind was not born facing God but facing the separation from Him because of original sin. Our minds require not only an initial revelation of the truth of God, ourself, and life in Him, but a continual renewal, a transition from glory to glory to grow into maturity in this.

    2 Corinthians 3:15-18 NLT
15 Yes, even today when they read Moses’ writings, their hearts are covered with that veil, and they do not understand.

16 But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

18 So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

Just as a natural person must grow in understanding during their time developing from an infant to a mature adult, so must we mature as Christians. But not only for the sake of growth but that we would not slip back. Just as truth is planted in our hearts to lead us in the way that pleases God, so can the enemy bring to us tares to sow among the wheat in hopes that we would receive the instruction of the deceptive tares and forsake the truth of the wheat. But with security in identity in the three areas touched on in this chapter, there is victorious Kingdom living.

    John 10:10
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

  22. 21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

I’m thankful for a church that still believes in prayer and fasting. We are seeing the results of it. Big victories only come to those who prepare to win big.

  23. 17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

Why do we constantly try to do things on our own? We have someone on our side that has all power. What make us think that we can do it without help? Many times we think that God needs our help or that we don’t have to ask. In those cases we get to a place where we see in over our heads. We need more then than before. It isn’t until we rely on him that these things are settled. Our flesh gets in the way. We have to learn how to think and understand like JESUS. Then we will see through his eyes and understand. Killing the flesh, and pride,is what causes the Vision and understanding to come to light.

  24. A quick fix.

As time has gone on. People have always looked for the quick fix to things. Working in the remodeling business for 5 months. I have come to the conclusion that many people take the easy way out. And then they call us to fix the problem that arose from the quick fix. Now how do we do the right way? Be years of experience and teaching. But how do we do that in the spirit? Jesus answers this in vs.
Faith,Prayer ,and Fasting. These are the keys. Let us learn from the disciples. And what Jesus taught them.

  25. 27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

Gods provision is great, sometimes miraculous… Something that jumped out to me in this last verse is that the order wasn’t changed. Jesus was speaking and said “give unto them for me and thee.” The Lord always comes first in our lives. No matter if its the taxes or giving or whatever…the first fruit is always give for The Lord. God first

  26. 8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

If we can get our eyes off of ourselves, and off of our problems, and lift up our eyes, we will see things the way Jesus sees them.

  27. OUR HEALER !!!! 15. Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. 16.And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. 17. Then Je’-sus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you ? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18. And Je’-sus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19. Then came the disciples to Je’-sus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20. And Je’-sus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Matt. 21 : 21 Luke 17 : 6 I AM VICTORIOUS THROUGH CHRIST JESUS !!!! JESUS YOU ARE MY HEALER !!!! THANK YOU FOR TAKING THOSE STRIPES ON YOUR BACK JESUS !! I LOVE YOU JESUS !!
