John 18

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not.

18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.

26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

  1. 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

That’s right, we do not war against flesh and blood because we are an army for a heavanly kingdom. Thank you Jesus because you are not of this world so you can not be defined by the laws of this world. You are holy.

  2. BETRAYED IN A FAMIALAR PLACE

How frequent in life have we found ourselves in a FAMILIAR PLACE only to be betrayed or taken advantage of. In and at a PLACE where we typically relax, share time and make memories we find ourselves in the midst of conflict and betrayal.

JESUS led the disciples to Cedron (a dusky place) a PLACE they resorted (a common meeting place). This is the PLACE where the follower/friend of JESUS chose to betray him. Could have been a family gathering or a church service.

Remember to always guard your heart and keep your eyes fixed on the prize of eternal reward.

  3. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

Jesus knew what his future held because He had spent time in the garden in prayer. He knew the cup He had to drink in order to bring true salvation to the world. The avenue of prayer will prepare us for things to come and give us the strength to walk through those things to come.

  4. Judas knew the place

    John 18:2 (KJV Strong’s)
2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

Judas whose name meant praise was well acquainted with the garden. Here many night they would follow Jesus to this place and he would pray.

It is not recorded that Judas prayed but that he knew the place. He sang the songs, he dressed the part, he even gave offering but something wasn’t quite right.

He may have even lived up to his name and praised God daily. Sadly Judas saw the place of prayer, the place of communion with God, the place of strengthening, solitude, and serenity, and many times a warzone in the spirit.

    Yet Judas still betrayed.

Our connection to God is vital. It cannot be stressed enough the need for prayer, and fellowship with him. We may go to the same place Jesus goes, and walk the same walk, and talk the same talk.

Judas knew the place. Judas didn’t know the connection that could be gained in that place.

    Psalms 16:11 (KJV Strong’s)
11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life:
    in thy presence is fulness of joy;
at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

    Psalms 140:12-13 (KJV Strong’s)
12 I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted,
and the right of the poor.
13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name:
the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

If we come to the place but not to his presence, to his spirit, to the connection then we have simply visited. God wants more than visitation rights. He wants us to be in his presence all throughout the day.

  5. I love to eat the Word,

    What is the Truth?

38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

When the truth is brought forth, it is often more harder to believe than fiction. Most find it easier to believe that there are 3 gods rather than to believe there is 1 God. When the truth comes out, it’s hard to argue the fact, but many still crucify the messenger and the message. This probably has to do more with pride

  6. 28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

Greek translation: 3392 miaínō – properly, to stain (with paint or dye); (figuratively) to stain (defile) the soul, i.e. like when sin taints by its polluting effects (“moral, spiritual stains”).

The root mia- (“tainted at the source”) shows everything passing through it also becomes stained (“reconstituted,” polluted).

[3392 (miaínō) literally means “to dye, stain with color.” Figuratively, it refers to rendering something morally (spiritually) defiled.]

The accusers wanted Jesus arrested, tried and persecuted, but at the same did not want to be associated with the trial. The hypocrisy of the accusers who did not to enter the judgement hall so they could partake in Passover celebration. At the same time they did not want to be morally stained and held responsible for the execution of Jesus, an innocent man.

  7. Verses 37-38 MSG “Then Pilate said, “So, are you a king or not?” Jesus answered, “You tell me. Because I am King, I was born and entered the world so that I could witness to the truth. Everyone who cares for truth, who has any feeling for the truth, recognizes my voice.” Pilate said, “What is truth?” Then he went back out to the Jews and told them, “I find nothing wrong in this man.”

Same verses AMP “Pilate said to Him, Then You are a King? Jesus answered, You say it! [You speak correctly!] For I am a King. [Certainly I am a King!] This is why I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the Truth. Everyone who is of the Truth [who is a friend of the Truth, who belongs to the Truth] hears and listens to My voice. Pilate said to Him, What is Truth? On saying this he went out to the Jews again and told them, I find no fault in Him.”

Once again this chapter reiterates the need for Truth. There are still so many asking as Pilate “What is Truth?” and we need to witness to the Truth.

  8. 37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

Pilate in his arrogance, not wanting to be involved, like many people today. He was willing to allow whatever happened happen, just do not blame me.
Jesus said my kingdom is not of this world, Pilate asked art thou a King. Jesus is more than a King, creator of all things. Pilate would have been better off if he would have googled Jesus to be sure who he was.
Truth was important in that day and it is important today! Jesus said for this cause I came into the world, yes Jesus was here for a purpose. I bear witness of the truth, and everyone of the truth will hear my voice. Does this mean Pilate was not of the truth? Evidently not because he asked: What is Truth?
My question for you today is do you know the TRUTH?
    JESUS CHRIST IS TRUTH!!!!!

  9. vs 37

If you love truth you will follow Jesus Crist
Jesus said I was born for this purpose and i come to bring truth to the world. All who love the truth are my FOLLPWERS.

  10. 3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

He didn’t try to run away or resist, but He loved us so much that He went willingly, knowing that what was to come.

  11. 37 Pilate said to Him, Then You are a King? Jesus answered, You say it! [You speak correctly!] For I am a King. [Certainly I am a King!] This is why I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the Truth. Everyone who is of the Truth [who is a friend of the Truth, who belongs to the Truth] hears and listens to My voice. (AMP)

In this AMP version it basically sounds like Jesus is telling Pilate, “Duh! Of course I’m a king, if you only knew my truth and who I was!” Jesus is so holy and came to this world with purpose – to shed His blood for us all and share the truth of His salvation. I am so thankful to be a part of His glorious kingdom to love His truth and hear His voice – there is nothing greater!

  12. 14, “Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.”
EXPEDIENT means useful for effecting a desired result; suited to the circumstances or the occasion; advantageous; convenient. Based on or offering what is of use or advantage rather than what is right or just; guided by self-interest; advisable; politic.

35, “Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?”
38, “Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.”
39, “But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?”
40, “Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.”

Barabbas was a robber. JESUS was faultless. Yet, because of custom, convenience, a desired result, advantage, self-interest, politics, they wanted Jesus to die.

This made me think of the scriptures found in Romans 5:6-8 and 18-19. “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” and “Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.”

Thank You JESUS that even thou you were faultless, You loved us (sinners) so much that you died for us. And because you did, we are forgiven and made free from sin and can live an abundant life in you.

  13. What is truth?

38 Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”
And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and *said to them, “ I find no guilt in Him.
    (John 18:38 NASBStr)

Pilate asked the most important question of his life, but rather than get into a philosophical discussion with Jesus, he went out to the Jews. Jesus’ claim that he was a king from “another realm” would not be far fetched for Pilate to believe. He was a Roman and as such he believed in many gods. At that time, it is very likely that Pilate could have been confused by all of the philosophies and religious ideas at that time.

Pilate is one of the many who ask without intentions of fervently seeking an answer. Today people have their own perceived truths. You may have heard perception is reality, but that is far from the truth. Reality is absolute truth. Perception is one’s interpretation of reality. It is a known fact that Pilate was a biggot toward the Jews. He placed the sign KING OF THE JEWS over Jesus’ head during the crucifixion as a mockery to the Jewish people. Less than seven years after this time, Pilate was removed from office as a procurator for being extremely cruel to the Jewish people.

The folly of Pilate is that he asked a question without getting the answer. It would behoove us not to allow others to be in the same situation. When people ask, “what is truth?” we can’t let them not get the answer.

  14. v 38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews , and saith unto them, I find in him no falt at all .

The only words uttered by our LORD were words that admitted truth.
Truth is the total absence of fault .

  15. 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Reminds me of the song. This world is not my home im just passing thru. Don’t lay your treasures up in this world cause out Lord is returning to this earth again to take his church home

  16. 25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself.

Jesus knew Peter would deny him cause he knew Peter’s heart but didn’t listen to him and he ended up doing it anyway. When God tells us what’s wrong with our heart, we need to listen to it and let God work our heart so that we may improve in our spiritual walk with God

  17. The Betrayed by a loved one

Judas was loved by God, he had shared so much with JESUS. Jesus trusted him with the finances, Judas was his treasurer; but he was unhappy, he wanted JESUS to be not only the Savior, but the politician that Isarael need it at that moment. Jesus knew that His purpose was greater, Jesus knew His purpose was greater, He knew that He was the last sacrifice for our salvation. Judas was a tool of the purpose that had to happened but the betrail had to hurt for it did not come from an unknown person or from an enemy but from one of his beloved disciples. Judas repentance came too late, do not let that happened to you!!!! If you have hurt your brother or sister humble yourself, talk, love, forgive, and move on!!! In Jesus Name AMEN

  18. 3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

Jesus did not deny who he was, he knew what he had to do to save us that we might one day spend etenal life with him. This is why we should never deny who God is, or that we know God, what if he had denied who he really was we would not be able to have forgiveness! Thank you Jesus for dying on the cross for me! Help me to always proclaim who you are not deny you!

  19. Encountering I AM

    Genesis 28:10-17
10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.

11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.

12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

    13 And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.

17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

    Exodus 3:1-6
1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

2 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

4 And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

In the middle of just “doing life,” there are seasons where we will stumble into an encounter with God. Jacob sought a resting place; Moses sought a strange bush; the ones who came with Judas sought a man: but they all came face to face with the great I AM. We have a choice, however, when we face Him; we can continue with business as usual, or stop to worship and see Him for who He is.

  20. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
Jesus knew what all the suffering and pain he had to go thru for our sins, but he didn’t let it stop his plan to save us gentiles!
    Thank you Jesus

  21. 6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

Just the words that Jesus spoke proclaiming who he was, had so much power that those hearing it were pushed backward and fell. God’s words have power if we could only believe and understand how much so.

  22. John 18:37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

The enemy of this world has kept people from hearing the truth of God. The enemy has deceived people even with watered down doctrines and ideologies. Changing the “old land marks” of truth and apostolic doctrines. People are being enticed by “life coaches” and motivators and thus are not willing to submit themselves to the order established by God. It is by the Holy Spirit that we can hear Truth.

John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

  23. “Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.” God (Jesus) spoke the truth, unfortunately their hearts were hard, and they could not hear. One that truly wants to hear his voice will pray for ears that hear him, eyes that see him and a heart that recognizes him. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  24. Neither person in charge wanted to put JESUS to death. It was the people, those of this world who rejected him. JESUS stated several times that he was not of this world. Those who are of this world reject those of us who only live in this world. As rejection comes we need to remember Jesis who was rejected no the simple reason that he was not of this world.

  25. 6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

This verse means to me that my God in Christ is trying to tell us something that most of us out in this world don’t want to listen to him preach his word to us his words heal are temples and our hearts, He is are God that has so much love for us that his love is abundantly to us and forever, thoses whoever backslide will be punished by our God are God has died for us on the cross and Sheded his blood on us for that his blood covers us like white snow, we fall to are knees for many reasons to pray forgiveness to our God that are God is a mighty God and glorify God and that it doesn’t mean that we can do anything we want and sin everytime of the day it doesn’t go like that are God doesn’t like us playing hot and cold with him and absolutely doesn’t like when we tell him that we are very sorry for something that we did and that we want do it again no more and then lie to him because we did the same sin over again . In Jesus Name Amen!!!

  26. John 18:36 Jesus said My kingdom is not of this world. If it were my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.

  27. 17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not.

Theres sometimes we deny God by who we hang out with or deny holding the bible in public. I know Ive been critized for having God’s word with me in plain site. But keep on keeping on. God sees everything we do and talks to us…teach me Lord, not to be ashamed of standing up for You, my Savior.

  28. 37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

  29. 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

What is truth? This is what the world is searching for, yet is searching in the wrong places. Truth is found in his word, yet his word is not searched. His word will judge us and today they still seek to change it. From watered down doctrines to no doctrine at all, his word still unchangeable. We cannot change it to suit ourselves – nor ignore it! We must search it daily to see if we are in THE faith.

  30. 22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

Wow this struck me! As I was listening to this verse, I could imagine the story as it unfolds. To imagine this man striking Jesus, and Peter being there hiding blending into the crowd. He stood there and watched this happen, the one that smote the servant and cut off his ear.
Where are you oh brave Peter?

  31. The King of Jews 37. Pi’-late therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Je’-sus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. John 8 : 47 38. Pi’-late saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. 39.
