John 19

1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

9 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews.

20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

  1. 7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;…

…19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross.

Pilate seems to believe in who Jesus is more than the religious leaders of the day. Do we believe In him the way that we should or are we complacent and maybe even deny the truth of his word.

  2. THE TRIAL

As we gain understanding and exercise revelation in regards to the POWER of GOD working in and through us, we learn the process and purpose of THE TRIAL. THE TRIAL could happen at any time, at any place, though any one, in any situation. We find a principal in this chapter; THE TRIAL will usually be revealed on our journey to fulfilling our PURPOSE in the Kingdom of GOD.

Pilate went to great lengths to challenge JESUS to confess or state his case in THE TRIAL. The silence of JESUS frustrated Pilate and those around him. Pilate then revealed his ignorance in regards to the deity of JESUS stating that he had the power to crucify or release JESUS. However JESUS revealed that the Kingdom of GOD had total authority in regards to life and death.

THE TRIAL was lengthy, frustrating and opportunistic for JESUS as they are in our lives.

The apostle Peter gives great revelation and insight into the power and purpose of THE TRIAL in our lives.

1Peter 1:7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

1Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

THE TRIAL is part of the process that brings us to our PURPOSE and Spiritual destiny.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGIve
    iReap

  3. Although Pilate could find no fault in Jesus he allowed the pressure of colleagues and peers to persuade him to crucify the Lord. We must be careful of the influence that we allow into our lives. Positive, Godky influence in very important. We must recognize carnal influence and be able to cut it off so that we are not persuaded to do something our heart is telling us not to do.

  4. 7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

    8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

The Jews said he made himself the Son of God therefore he ought to die.
This made Pilate more afraid because he knew, he could find no fault in this man. Then when Pilate asked Jesus who he was and where do you come from.
Pilate talking about the power he had, Jesus telling Pilate you would have no power at all if it was not for God. This is a lesson we all must learn, we have no power at all if it was not for God.
All power in heaven and earth is given unto God! If we do anything in life God will be the one that allows that to happen. We can do these things with the respect of God or in rebellion against God.
The question today is How will we move forward from today?

  5. 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Thank you Jesus for dying for us on the cross so that we may live. So that our sins could be forgiven and with your stripes we are healed and delivered in your name!

  6. This chapter reveals the importance of every detail being fulfilled in the scriptures. Details are important, even the chief priests wanted Pilate to change the wording of the sign he had made….why??…because they wanted to make a point. So it is very important that every aspect of your life reveal who you are in Christ. You cannot allow people’s looks, people’s words, or anything of this world change who you are in Him.

  7. 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

The significance of blood & water flowing from his body. The blood that covers ours sins, for when we repent, And the water–signifies baptism that washes away our sins.

  8. iLove to eat the Word

11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

Authority always comes from God. This Roman governor was told by Jesus that his power and authority came from above. The fact is, when we oppose the government we oppose God’s authority.

    Respect for Authority

Romans 13:1 Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. 2So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. 3For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. 4The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. 5So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience.

6Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. 7Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.

  9. Sad His own did not know Him, but Pilate knew CHRIST identified Him as The King of the Jews. He knew he was innocent, he tried so hard to get CHRIST Free but JESUS knew His destiny was to Save us from eternal life in hell. THANK YOU JESUS FOR SHEDDING YOUR PRECIOUS BLOOD TO SAVE US, TO WASH US WHITE AS SNOW, TO HEAL US, THANK YOU JESUS YOU ARE MY EVERYTHING!!!!!!!

  10. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
    The power of prophecy…
Over 2000 years before the death of Jesus these two prophetic scriptures were penned by a prophet. At the time the wrote it its likely they had no idea what these words meant. But the word of God will never return void and so 2000 years later the words are fufilled one by one in the scriptures. This is further proof that Gods promises are true and He will do what He says!

  11. John 19:15 (KJV Strong’s)
15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

Caesar was the symbol of the state.

Roman society even venerated their Ceasars as gods. Rome at the time exhibited the height of human accomplishment. They had a functioning democratic society. They built roads, and were steeped in the arts.

They had conquered the known world, and the Jews were in bondage.

The admission of the priests that they had no king but Ceasar reveals the true state of their hearts, and lives.

Romans were immoral. They were public about their affections, and even had large baths constructed with hundreds publicly bathing. They worshipped many different gods. They have themselves over to debauchery, and lifestyles contrary to Jewish tradition, and the word.

The priests said they had no king but Ceasar. The priests were the liaison between God and man. They were the ones who were purported to serve the King. Yet their admission reveals they were only going through the motions.

Kingship doesn’t end by our choice. The king rules and reigns forever.

    Just a thought.

  12. “After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst”. The God (Jesus) of all was obedient to, and waited until, his own word was fulfilled. Everything is done in order, and according to God’s word, as such one would be wise to be observant of the season, for surely the King’s return is at hand. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  13. 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
If it is written in the Word of God then you can believe it !! It will come to pass!!
I’m thankful for God’s word, that if we will read it , it will be our road map to heaven. It will also tell us about the bad curves that are in our path so that we can be able to go around them with out re cking our lives and come out Victorious at the end of our journey!!

  14. 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

His word is true, it always has been and it always will be

  15. 19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross.

It is written. No one can despite it now. Pilate made a declaration even the Jews didn’t understand at that time. What is written cannot be changed.
When Jesus was tempted by the devil he said “it is written”. Jesus knew that the devil would understand the word cannot be changed. No one can despute the written word of God. It is written he is the King!

  16. 19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews.

What a title to have…at least they acknowledged that he was a King. He’s always my King everyday. And I pray that when I go up to Glory w Jesus…that I will have a title that I was a true desciple of Christ. I love the Lord and I lean on Him for everything I need in this life. Thank yall and happy late Thanksgiving.:).

    In Jesus Name, Amen.

  17. Lord And Christ

7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

    Acts 2:36
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

The Jews rejected Jesus because they could not see past the surface things to realize His identity when He walked among them. Instead of seeing “Abba, Father” they saw a traitorous blasphemer. It wasn’t until after He took our place, suffering the cross and rising again victorious over death and hell, that they came to be confronted with Him again on the day of Pentecost. Jesus certainly did many notable miracles, but He did not come as they anticipated Messiah would and they missed Him.

We must be careful to not miss out on the visitation of the Lord in our day just because He comes in a way we aren’t expecting. The Jews crucified Him for the very same way that He revealed Himself to them. Our hunger for God must exceed our desire to remain in our comfort zone of understanding and convenience. Those who saw Jesus were the ones who were willing to drop everything to go follow Him. It’s when we seek after God and hold nothing back that we too can not only see Jesus in His time of visitation but truly encounter Him.

  18. 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Thank you Jesus for dying on the cross for me! You did not have to do it, but you did just so that I might make it to heaven one day and spend eternal life with you!!

  19. No shame for a royal burial.

    John 19:39
Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.

At first nicodemus approached Jesus at night. This time he does it openly with no shame. A hundred litra of 12 ounces each would equate 75lbs for us. The price per pound is unknown but this amount and type was equivalent to what was used for royalty. He sacrificed quite a bit monetarily to dress Jesus’s body for a burial.

  20. When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” “Take him yourselves and crucify him,” Pilate said. “I find him not guilty.” The Jewish leaders replied, “By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever. He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer. “Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?” Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, “If you release this man, you are no ‘friend of Caesar.’ Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.”

Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away. (‭John‬ ‭19‬:‭6-12, 16‬ NLT)

It’s interesting how people know they are making the wrong choice but they in turn do them regardless to satisfy the uneasiness of the situation. Doubt is not of God and if you come to a decision in life where you doubt God is in it, you probably shouldn’t do it. This ruler had a choice and instead of standing up for what he knew was right ,doubt crept in and he allowed others to cloud his mind. ..

  21. Verbiage

And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. (‭John‬ ‭19‬:‭19-22‬ KJV)

Pilate said he was the king of the Jews. The Jewish people denied this. His title was given and not changed to, “he said he was” because Pilate came to the revelation of the truth. The truth was he knew JESUS was more than just a man. He didn’t want to kill him, but the people called for his blood. pilate’s hands were tied in many ways, but he was able to provide the people, the ones who wanted to murder jesus who was innocent , with some truth. The truth was written in 3 languages so that all could know the truth of who JESUS was to the people who killed him.

  22. this Chapter reminds me of the phrase “pick up your cross and follow me” which in truth always frightened me. for a long time i was unsure why it did, but reading this showed me and reminded me my cross is heavy, and i have to take on the burden of my cross alone. on days where i am weak, the cross might slip. carrying the cross i could get bruises, cuts and splinters. with the weigh very great i could forget who i even am, but to know that the thing i carry is a cross, is a burden that i carry for this world just like my God did so long ago, that i will pick up my cross and follow Him.

  23. 17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

We all too have to carry our cross and crucify our flesh. There is no way we can follow Jesus without it.
And this is a process that must be done daily. We then shall suffer jointly with Him and be glorified with Him. We must die everyday to self will, to do what “I” want to do and do what The Lord desires that I do.

Luke 9:23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

  24. 10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

Thank you jesus for your greatness.

  25. 11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

Pilate was constrained by man to have him crucified as was ordained in scripture. If it were not to be, Jesus already said his disciples would fight. But it is written that he would suffer and die for the work of redemption. Jesus suffered a cruel death to purchase our salvation….how can it ever be repaid? I must accept it and follow him and help further his kingdom so that his death will benefit the millions yet to come.

  26. 7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

Perfect Example that God is one here! If he wasn’t one it would’ve said because he sent his Son but no it says “because he made himself the Son of God. 🙂 Hallelujah!!!! No greater name than the name of Jesus!!!

  27. v28 ” I thirst ”

JESUS thirst that we should never thirst.
Thank GOD for Calvary we are able to experience resurrection power in our lives because of the crucified and risen Savior.

  28. 12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

When someone is afraid of loosing their position or title, for doing the right thing and instead compromising the truth is the same as many preachers of today’s time. when asked if homosexuals will inherit the kingdom of God, and for the sake of political correctness you don’t speak the truth of the Word you will become like Pilate did.
