Acts 11

1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,

3 Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.

4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,

5 I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:

6 Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

7 And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.

8 But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.

9 But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

10 And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.

11 And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me.

12 And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house:

13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;

14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.

20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.

21 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.

22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.

23 Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.

24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.

25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:

26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

27 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.

28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:

30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

30 thoughts on “Acts Chapter 11

  1. 18. When the others heard this, they stopped objecting and began praising God. They said, “We can see that God has also given the Gentiles the privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life.”

    20. However, some of the believers who went to Antioch from Cyprus and Cyrene began preaching to the Gentiles about the Lord Jesus.

    21. The power of the Lord was with them, and a large number of these Gentiles believed and turned to the Lord. NLT

1.) They stopped objecting to what the man of God had done (in obedience to God, no less)

2.) They praised God for what He was doing for someone else

3.) They started preaching to all people, not just their own kind

4.) Many people turned to God

…A plan that will still work today

  2. 5 I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:

Being protected at all cost. By the Savior….

I thankyou Lord for Your protection and direction. I follow you earnestly my Jesus. Bless You, Jesus.

  3. 29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:

People always ask me why we do what we do, that if we did tracks it will take less time and inform them just as well. I just tell them that we prefer outreach on the personal level.
When we first arrive at POfW, we were personally visited by the Pastor and although people don’t mind the visit it makes them feel like they are important to the Pastor. I am happy to say that our church has always reached out and helped the community when the need is there. That and the fact that they love everyone without looking at the color of their skin that is what makes POFW great and the best church in town to go to. I learned the real kind of fellowship and love at POFW. Thank you Jesus for POFW!!!!

  4. 16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

Then I remembered the word of the Lord. Yes the Holy Ghost has now fell on the Gentiles as well as the Jews. The Gentiles now can approach God and be just like the Jews.

  5. 9 But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

What God has cleaned is not common.
We were born in sin. Dirty, broken, and unholy just like everyone else. But God called us out. He washed away our sins. He cleansed us and set us apart, we will never be like everyone else again. We don’t fit in with the world, we are a peculiar people.

  6. Are YOU a Christian?
    MORE Jesus LESS Me

    Acts 11:26 (KJV Strong’s)
26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

Christian- (CWSB Dictionary) 5546. Χριστιανός Christianós; gen. Christianoú, masc. noun from Christós (G5547), Christ. A name given to the disciples or followers of Christ, first adopted at Antioch. It does not occur in the NT as a name commonly used by Christians themselves (Acts 11:26; 26:28; 1 Pet. 4:16). The believers first became known as Christians as an appellation of ridicule.

(Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary) As applied by Gentiles there was no doubt an implication of scorn, as in Agrippa’s statement in Acts 26:28. Tacitus, writing near the end of the first century, says, “The vulgar call them Christians. The author or origin of this denomination, Christus, had, in the reign of Tiberius, been executed by the procurator, Pontius Pilate” (Annals xv. 44). From the second century onward the term was accepted by believers as a title of honor.

“It comes from Χριστός (christos) meaning “the anointed one”, with an adjectival ending borrowed from Latin to denote adhering to, or even belonging to, as in slave ownership. ‘Ianos has nothing to do with the verb following. The Greek suffix is used to denote “possession” such as slaves.”

Are YOU A Christian? From these definitions it becomes very clear that the word Christian has lost much of its original meaning. Literally the word means Slaves of Christ.

The mockers were saying that the disciples, and believers had no time for themselves, no control, no say, they were slaves. To unbelievers they were slaves to a dead man. This was meant to be ridicule, and scorn but actually reveals the will of God.

We are not free moral agents in the kingdom. HE is the KING. All we are, have, do is determined by the King.

Saying “I believe in Jesus” doesn’t make anyone a Christian. Jesus said “if you love me, keep my commandments.” If we love him we will be his slaves. Yet remember that the Lord came to give life, and it more abundantly. The key to abundant life is death to self, slavery, and surrendering complete control of OUR WHOLE LIVES to Jesus.

How do we get MORE Jesus?
    LESS SELF.

A christian is not a church goer. A Christian is not a believer, a Christian isn’t even someone who is born again.

A Christian is a Slave to Christ.

We can have been to the water, filled with his spirit, but hold onto our own wants, will, desires, and plans and never become real Christians.

It is one thing to claim to be a slave. It’s another thing entirely to live the life of a slave. We can say we are Christians all we want to, but unless we have surrendered self to him, and become his slaves we are misrepresenting the title.

  7. THE PERILS OF REVIVAL AND THE HARVEST

2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,
3 Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.

Obeying GOD is the greatest experience of personal accomplishment. Nothing makes the soul complete like hearing and obeying the voice of GOD. Evidenced here, everyone does not understand the work that GOD will do through us to grow HIS Kingdom. The contentions of other believers can some of the most challenging times we face. We glean from Peter here how to respond to such contentions.

4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,

Simply tell the TRUTH. Explain in detail the what, how and when of the GOD granted opportunity. The TRUTH will speak for itself.

    THE RESULT

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

We must be willing to LISTEN to and or EXPLAIN what happened to allow GOD ti judge the matter by HIS WORD and HIS SPIRIT. Thank you JESUS for the Harvest and Revival.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGIve
    iReap

  8. 14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

When Peter listened and obeyed the voice, the Holy Ghost responded by falling down upon all the people in the room. When we listen to the voice of God that’s when we attract the Holy Spirit into our lives and into our hearts. But when we don’t obey his word that’s when he starts to draw so be careful to obey and listen to the voice of God.

  9. Beyond belief

    Acts 11:17
Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?”

The gift of the Spirit came after believing. This shows that it takes more than just be living on the Lord. We need the gift of His Spirit.

  10. Because of the culture back in biblical days, Cornelius and his house was the most unlikely people for Peter to go and preach to and them receive the Holy Ghost and be baptized. But because of Peter’s obedience, and the obedience on Cornelius part, his entire household was saved.

God is seeking and searching for willing hearts that will love Him and be obedient. It might be the most unlikely person we can think of, but are we listening to the voice of the Lord for direction and guidance to lead us to someone hungry.

  11. iLove to eat the Word

    “More Believers”

The message of salvation was first preached to the Jews but was rejected by the majority of them. Our God doesn’t receive rejection too well and decided to open the floodgates of heaven to the pagan Gentiles. This was a great surprize to the Jewish believers and would continue to be an issue of controversy throughout the church.

Peter, having the keys to the kingdom, had the vision that God would use to allow “More Believers” into the kingdom. God is a merciful God and even though he received the Gentiles, they still had to receive the same Spirit the same way…Speaking in tongues was the evidence to the Jews that God had received them into the fold. This is the same way new disciples are added into the kingdom today.

  12. 17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

We should praise God when others get a blessing, just as much as we would when we receive our blessing! If we don’t how would God know that we would rejoice when he’s ready to give us our blessing!

  13. 27 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.

28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth (famine) throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:

30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

When we are in unison, we can do so much more than we realize! These people were able to help during a horrible famine that was truly terrible. Suetonius, a Roman historian, noted that the famine was so bad that Claudius, Roman Emperor, was publicly abused with (I’m assuming) words and pieces of bread. He narrowly escaped (Suetonius 18, Claudius). Kudos to the Church for taking care of their people! Praise God for turning us into loving, caring people for those around us!

  14. 9 But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

Amen! Everything God cleanse is not unclean! God can cleanse our sickness, food, wickedness, and SIN. 🙂 God is the only one who can cleanse us from impurity and transform us 🙂 thank you Jesus for washing my sins away and giving me breathe of fresh air!!!

  15. 26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

Antioch is were the church body assembled. We can see the 5 fold ministry coming together here. The disciples were called Christians, and the prophets came too and prophesied. The sent relief for those who lived in Judea by the evangelists. 30 “Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.” They operated in the order and in the Spirit, they obeyed the prophetic and sent relief. they flowed in the will of God, the same will we are to walk in today.

  16. 15 “As I began to speak,” Peter continued, “the Holy Spirit fell on them, just as he fell on us at the beginning.
16 Then I thought of the Lord’s words when he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
17 And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God’s way?”
18 When the others heard this, they stopped objecting and began praising God. They said, “We can see that God has also given the Gentiles the privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life.” (NLT)

The gift of salvation is for everyone! Thank You Jesus! Reminds me of my Pastor back in Kansas, Bro. Cornwell, he always says there is room in the house of God for every body! And it is not our job to judge but welcome, accept, and help guide the new lives in Christ.

  17. v17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God ?

No room for prejudice and small thinking .
We must understand and obey HIS WORD .
Cross all barriers and take the gospel to every creature . To the whole wide world .

  18. “Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?” Peter obeyed God (Jesus), and souls were added. One that will obey God, and the man of God, regardless of tradition or circumstance, will be a help and not a hindrance to the Lord (Jesus). What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  19. Christians

26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch

To be a true Christian you have to be like Christ and be settled in the Apostles doctrine. The teaching that they recieved and the knowledge of Christ that was revealed to them made them Christains.

  20. 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

We cannot determine who should or should not be saved. Our part is to witness and it’s up to God who to save. Scripture says it’s for ‘whosoever will’. God is no respecter of persons and neither should we.

  21. And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God’s way?” (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭11‬:‭17‬ NLT)

Who are we to think that our ways are better than Gods? We need the Holy Spirit in our lives to help us detour right from wrong, to know His will over our own, to see truth.

  22. Acts 11:14 He will tell you how you and everyone in your household can be saved!’

We must pay attention and obey the voice of our man of God for he will listen to God for us and tells us the way to be saved, prospered, blessed, delivered…

  23. 26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

    We are Christians

  24. Verses 20-21 MSG “Then some of the men from Cyprus and Cyrene who had come to Antioch started talking to Greeks, giving them the Message of the Master Jesus. God was pleased with what they were doing and put his stamp of approval on it—quite a number of the Greeks believed and turned to the Master.” This gospel is for everybody….no matter your status, your color, your age….everybody means everybody (guaranteed by the Master).

  25. Acts11:15 as I began to speak the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said John baptized with water but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ who was I to think that i could stand un God s water.

  26. ONLY ONE IS TO JUDGE AND HE IS OUR JUDGE IN EVERYTHING WE DO, JESUS CHRIST

What a wonderful example of how we should be when we come in contact with all walks of life.
    Acts 11:2-3New Living Translation (NLT)
2 But when Peter arrived back in Jerusalem, the Jewish believers[a] criticized him.
3 “You entered the home of Gentiles[b] and even ate with them!” they said.
    Then Peter said to them…
    Acts 11:16-18 (NLT)
16 Then I thought of the Lord’s words when he said, ‘John baptized with[a] water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
17 And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God’s way?”
18 When the others heard this, they stopped objecting and began praising God. They said, “We can see that God has also given the Gentiles the privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life.”

If we could all focus on the problem at hand, that there are souls that are lost and they need to be saved. They need to hear God’s word, believe, repent, be baptized in Jesus name and receive the wonderful gift of the Holy Ghost. It doesn’t matter if they just came off the street or if they were Harlots, adulterers, fornicators, rapist, drug addicts, alcoholics, black, white, mexican, asian or any type of race or color. We are not to Judge them, we can only pray for them and that God leads them in the right way, to everlasting life.
Thank you God for your SPIRIT, thank you Jesus for your love and your mercy, Thank you Jesus for forgiving us all of being judgmental and clearing our mind and our SPIRIT.

1 John 5:21 New Living Translation (NLT)
21 Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.

THANK YOU JESUS, I LOVE YOU.

  27. And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord. Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord. (‭Acts‬ ‭11‬:‭21-24‬ KJV)

  28. Borderless

5 I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:

The borders of tradition and cultural boundaries is brought down the closer we draw the God. Drawing near to Him, we draw away from carnal thinking and reasoning and can receive the wisdom and ways of God. If we are truly to unite to be the unified church God has called us to be, it we require us casting aside our own understanding and being renewed in our minds to operate in the ways of God.

    Isaiah 55:8-9
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

  29. 4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,

Peter rehearsed the matter in himself. Sometime God uses people to do things they have to do a double take on. Yet it is best to simply surrender and obey.
