Acts 12

1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.

2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.

7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.

14 And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.

20 And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king’s country.

21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.

  1. Ruling love for God rather than man or ourselves.

Thanku Lord for this passage and allowing me to read Your Word everyday. I love You, JESUS.

  2. 4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
A quaternion is a group of 4 soldiers, fear was over them that they were to make sure that he wouldn’t run away. But not even the quaternion was able to stop him when the angel of God came to his rescue. He walk right on out of that jail and no one saw or heard anything. TO GOD BE ALL HONOR AND GLORY!!!!!! 1 Cor 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

  3. “Prayer Changes Things”

4, “And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaterions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.”
5, “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.”
11, “And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.”
12, “And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.”

Four quaterions of soldiers (16) was put in place to keep Peter from getting out of prison. His situation was bleak, but because he had a church and a people who prayed without ceasing (didn’t stop), earnestly (serious and intense; zealous and sincere), effectually (producing, or capable of producing; the desired effect), and fervently (showing great warmth of feeling, intensely, earnest, ardent) for him, God delivered him.

I am so thankful for POFW. There have been times in my life that seemed bleak, but because of a CHURCH who prayed without ceasing, earnestly, effectually, and fervently for my situation, God delivered.
And I know this is why we are seeing God do great things in our CHURCH. People are being saved, people are being healed, and miracles are taking place because of a CHURCH that knows how to PRAY. (Without ceasing, earnestly, effectually, and fervently)

Thank You JESUS for answering Prayers!! “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding (surpassing, extraordinary, extreme) abundantly (very plentiful, MORE than sufficient; ample) above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” “Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” Eph. 5:20-21

  4. Verse 16 KJV “But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.” Sometimes we pray and pray for the Lord to answer our prayers, make a way or open the doors for opportunity; all the while, the answer is standing right in front of us! We are so caught up with life, the cares of this world and do not realize/see or want the answer we are getting. Sometimes the answer is keep knocking, sometimes its a matter of opening yourself up; but, it is always, always in His time…..not ours! So, don’t stop praying…….your answer might just be on the other side of the door.

  5. 18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.

Herod hated the church so much that he not only wanted Peter put to death, but anyone that would help him. The keepers of the prison were even put to death. Now see what happens when we do not give God the Glory!

Herod wanted to get all the honor he could get and the people said he was A God and then God smote him and he died because he gave not God the Glory and Honor due to him.
What I like most is with all this persecution going on against the church The Word of God not only just grew it MULTIPLIED! Think about this not just small growth, but being able to multiply in a chaotic atmosphere with persecution coming against the Church.
What do you say we MULTIPLY!!!

  6. “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.” They were in unity, praying for Peter. However they had sought for so long that doubt had entered in; “But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.” When there is unity, things happen, however one must not grow weary for the Lord’s (Jesus) will, shall happen, at the right time. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  7. 12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

The power of fervent, effectual prayer. Why are we dismayed when God answers? If we have the faith enough to ask it in prayer, we should have faith enough to believe it is going to happen, and not be shocked when it does. I’m praying circles around situations today that I believe God is providing an answer for and going to respond, and when He does, I will be prepared to rejoice!

  8. 4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

When you’re stuck in a troubled time, don’t ever stop praying and don’t ever stop believing that God will bring you out of your situation. It was because that Peter kept on praying that God heard him where he was at and he answered him by sending an angel to help deliver him from the situation he was in.

If you need God to deliver you from a situation in your life then just remember to never stop praying, pray without ceasing, seeking God and God will find you where you are at

  9. ALL GLORY BELONGS TO GOD

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

It is very dangerous to accept glory for anything, we learn form Herod that even the unbeliever is judged by GOD when GLORY is misappropriated. We see a divine contrast in how to respond to and treat GLORY in this chapter.

Peter when deliver from an impossible situation chose to give GLORY to GOD and he was saved from death.

17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

We see the contrast here in GLORY, when Peter could have taken credit, it was his testimony, he chose to give GLORY to the LORD. Herod on the other hand when lifted up chose to take the GLORY for himself and pride caused him to self destruct by the hand of the LORD.

    iRepent
    iPray
    iPraise
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  10. 4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

This is why it is so important to develop a life of prayer! Peter never stopped praying and believing that God would bring him out. No matter what we’re going through in life, no matter how busy our schedule is there is ALWAYS time to pray! Lord I pray that you help me to develop a stronger prayer life!

  11. Acts12:4 after arresting him he put him in prison handing Hoover to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herodotus intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover. So Peter was kept in prison but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. The night before Herodotus was to bring him to trail Peter was sleeeping between two soldiers bound with two chains and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and alight shone in the cell. HE struck Peter on the side and woke him up. Quick get up he said and the chains fell off Peter s wrists.

  12. 12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

Many times we pray for something and then are astonished when God answers. I need to build my faith to where I am only astonished when I don’t see the answer.

  13. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed that, instead of opening the door, she ran back inside and told everyone, “Peter is standing at the door!”

When we receive good news, have a miracle happen for us, we too should go crazy, shouting, and rejoicing to tell everyone about it.

  14. iLove to eat the Word

15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

They were there praying and when their prayer was answered, they couldn’t believe it. The word says that there was “prayer made without ceasing.”

While Peter’s life was spared, there were many soldiers that day that lost their lives. Mothers lost sons, wives lost husbands, children lost fathers, and souls met their eternal destination. “19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death.”

While it was a miracle that Peter was released, it was also sad for the ones who had to pay for that escape.

  15. 4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

Herod had four sets of four soldiers to guard Peter. Herod knew that Peter was powerful because of the God he protected by. The church, being in unison, prayed for deliverance and BOOM! It happened!
I have no doubt that Peter, being a great man of God, told those soldiers about the Truth. Even though it isn’t recorded, I would be highly surprised if good ol’ Petey missed out on another chance to spread the Gospel. We can only pray that those soldiers listened and followed through before they were executed. This situation does bring a great reminder of Isaiah 54:17 “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.” BOOM!!!!!!!!!

  16. 9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

    When vision becomes reality.

I have a dream…. Became an iconic statement. But with power. Everyone one of us have had a dream at some point in time. And if we work towards those dreams they then can become reality.
But here’s the real reality. Jesus is in the thrown. He is alive and well. Through him we can do all things. But it starts with a dream. The lightbulb started as that someone got burned to many times holding a fire stick. Do dream. Dream big. Dream MORE.

  17. Remember Jesus when you are praying

Acts 12:15-16 (Wuest – The New Testament: An Expanded Translation)
15 But they said to her, You are raving mad. But she strongly and consistently asserted that thus it was. But they kept on saying, It is his angel [his guardian angel, assuming his form and voice, a Jewish belief]. 16 But Peter remained and kept on knocking. And having opened the door, they saw him and were beside themselves with astonishment.

Astonished – g1839. ἐξίστημι existēmi; from 1537 and 2476; to put (stand) out of wits, i.e. astound, or (reflexively) become astounded, insane: — amaze, be (make) astonished, be beside self (selves), bewitch, wonder.

Thayer’s – to throw out of position

(CWSB Dictionary) To remove out of a place or state. In the NT applied only to the mind, meaning to be out of one’s mind, beside oneself

How many times have we gotten down to pray, and made it a ritual? Have you ever gotten done, and felt unchanged, unmoved, or unaffected.

Here we have the church praying for Peter, but when the answer comes they continue to pray. They just kept doing the same thing.

This happens when we move from the spirit to the flesh.

When they realized that it really was Peter they were completely thrown off. They had assumed a position of control in their prayers. So much that they had answered the prayer themselves.

They answered “it is his angel.” They believed he was never coming out more than they could believe he was going to be delivered. Even though they were praying the words their hearts were not where they should have been.

This challenges us to remember Jesus when we are praying. Stay in the spirit and let him do things in his own time he will even let us know when the answer knocks on the door if we are listening.

  18. v11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

To GOD BE ALL THE GLORY !!!
HIS POWER still protects, empowers, and defends.
Every miracle glorifies God and creates an opportunity for us stand up and testify of
    HIS GREATNESS !!!!!

  19. Acts 12:3 & 5 New Living Translation (NLT)
3 When Herod saw how much this pleased the Jewish people, he also arrested Peter. (This took place during the Passover celebration.
5 But while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him.

    Acts 12:6-7New Living Translation (NLT)
    Peter’s Miraculous Escape from Prison
6 The night before Peter was to be placed on trial, he was asleep, fastened with two chains between two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison gate.
7 Suddenly, there was a bright light in the cell, and an angel of the Lord stood before Peter. The angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said, “Quick! Get up!” And the chains fell off his wrists.

    Acts 12:11-12New Living Translation (NLT)
11 Peter finally came to his senses. “It’s really true!” he said. “The Lord has sent his angel and saved me from Herod and from what the Jewish leaders[a] had planned to do to me!”
12 When he realized this, he went to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many were gathered for prayer.
    vs. 16(NLT)
16 Meanwhile, Peter continued knocking. When they finally opened the door and saw him, they were amazed.

Peter thought he was in a dream then entire time, until he came to reality of the wonderful works Jesus was doing for him and escaping out of prision. If we could all have a little more trust in Jesus, then we would be able to finally see all the miraculous things he has and is doing for us.

Thank you Jesus, your always faithful and always good, I love you.

  20. Instantly, an angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness, because he accepted the people’s worship instead of giving the glory to God. So he was consumed with worms and died. (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭12‬:‭23‬ NLT)

Don’t get big headed! Without God you would be nothing, have nothing, know nothing. we should be grateful for the opportunities we have to worship the King of Kings.

  21. Jailbreak

7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

There are little children in the morning peeking out their windows waiting for that POFW bus to come. They are exited about the blessing of the Lord. It is as if the angel has smite their side and woke them up from prison and their about to jail break. This is some of these kids only time to touch God. We have bribed then with a small token but it’s only to enjoy the true treasure of a life touched and changed by Jesus.

  22. 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

It tells us that “then were the days of unleavened bread” But why does it tell use that?
From what i looked up I found that the eating of unleavened bread was done on the passover. But why is that phrase significant to be placed? Well I think it is because Jesus’s last supper was a passover, correct?

  23. Catalyst For Destiny

I’ve heard it preached that Peter was freed due to prayer, and the he was freed due to his destiny. But I believe it is a combination of both. His destiny aligned the situation with the will of God but prayer was the catalyst of change to being God into the midst of the circumstance. We must not underestimate the power of praying the will of God. We at POFW stand with one foot in the known and the other resting upon faith in the midst of unknown as we move forward into destiny. While we know the Lord is leading us and we are in His purpose, we cannot let off in prayer. And while we pray, we must not love faith but keep heart that destiny beckons us into the supernatural to rise above natural limitations to acheive the unachievable.

    Philippians 4:6-7, 19
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

  24. realty or vision

    Acts 12:9
And he went out and continued to follow, and he did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.

Peter was unsure whether h was seeing a vision or it was real he had expecting it was a vision his indicates that it was normal for Peter to have visions that seemed real. oh if we could get the church back to a walk with God like his.

  25. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church

The need for more prayer is always present to do great things. We know that God answers prayer and that he hears us when we call.. How many people we know are in their own prison waiting for an eternal death sentence? As a church and as believers we can call on behalf of them that need out of bondage. God will answer as we pray His will. And His will is not that any should perish, but that they all come to repentance.

  26. And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)‭ACTS 12‬:‭3

    The promises of old.
This was like when the Israelites were in Egypt and God told them about Passover. The Jewish people were still being faithful to the commandments of God–MORE COMMITMENT.

And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. (‭Acts‬ ‭12‬:‭7‬ KJV)

    Obedience is better than sacrifice.
The angel commanded and Peter did what he was told. His immediate obedience caused his situation to drastically change. He went from being a bound prisoner to someone who had the weights of their chains removed instantly because of his obedience. Peter’s sacrifice would have been his own life if he would not have obeyed so quickly.–MORE OVEDIANCE.

Peter’s sacrifice would have been his own life if he would not have obeyed so quickly.–MORE OBEDIENCE

  28. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

    Prayer
The amazing power of prayer. There is not telling what voice of a united body of believers can do. Pastor spoke about changing the song we sing. When I find a new song that I really like, I put it on reply for the first day. I once I’ve heard it too many times I find the need to change my tone because regardless who beautiful that song is or powerful, the perfect song will always be the one you receive in due season. Right at that exact moment, God uses that new song to bring new victory new life. If I stick that old victory or life, you miss out on the new blessing God wants for you.

  29. 11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

Wow!!! The amazing things that my God can do 🙂 he will deliver us from any bad situation that we may be in! God is able of EVERYTHING!!!!! We just have to surrender ourselves to him in EVEYTHING and he will take care of us BUT it is our choice to choose what path to take either go back or leave it behind and keep moving forward! Grateful to have somebody that I can lean on, trust, follow, depend on, tell him anything and everything, loving, forgiving, mighty, powerful, and so many more things!!! Thank You Jesus for loving me do much!!!

  30. 7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

The angel came and had Peter dress himself and put his shoes one because it was time to go. When God puts you on assignment “a mission” prison will not be able to hold you. It does not matter the nature of the prison your in… emotional or mental God is able to free you and put you to work just surrender.
