Acts 17

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

33 So Paul departed from among them.

34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

  1. v21 ( For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

They were seeking a new thought to discuss among themselves, they desired to hear the complete story of Paul’s message.

Praise GOD !!!! JESUS conquered sin and death
HE WAS GOD, the eternal Creator manifested in flesh, and only through JESUS CHRIST do we have victory over sin and the assurance of eternal life
It’s through HIM we enter the VICTORY HE WON for us .

I am victorious through CHRIST JESUS !!!

  2. 21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

So, you like to talk and gossip? Here’s something worth talking about: I know the Name of the Unknown God…I declare unto you Jesus!

  3. Verse 11 KJV “These were MORE noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Same verse AMP “Now these [Jews] were better disposed and MORE noble than those in Thessalonica, for they were entirely ready and accepted and welcomed the message [[a]concerning the attainment through Christ of eternal salvation in the kingdom of God] with inclination of mind and eagerness, searching and examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” This verse of scripture speak to me about knowing the word MORE. We can’t just read it….we have to live it, breathe it and know it.

Verse 26 AMP “And He made from one [common origin, one source, one blood] all nations of men to settle on the face of the earth, having definitely determined [their] allotted periods of time and the fixed boundaries of their habitation (their settlements, lands, and abodes),” This verse reminds me about what Pastor Sam Emory spoke about last night. It’s a blood thing….His blood….the God of creation and Lord of all.

  4. 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

This scripture says it best in him (Jesus) we live and move and have our being. We give God all the honor and understand we are the offspring of God. We would have nothing and not be anything if it were not for the Lord. We give God all the credit in our lives, as to what we are and have become.
The Godhead is not measured as gold or any precious stone. God is a God unlike any other and we give him all the honor we can in praise and worship.

  5. iLove to eat MORE Word

    “More Noble”
11 These were “more noble” than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

    NOBLE
    a : possessing outstanding qualities : illustrious
    b : famous, notable
    2
: of high birth or exalted rank : aristocratic
    3
a : possessing very high or excellent qualities or properties
b : very good or excellent
    4
: grand or impressive especially in appearance
    5
: possessing, characterized by, or arising from superiority of mind or character or of ideals or morals : lofty

How do we become “More Noble?” How do we move up in the kingdom of Heaven?

Receive the word with all readiness of mind, and search the scriptures daily! Daily blogging moves up our rank in the city of Fort Worth. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

  6. MORE Yielding

Acts 17:16 (Wuest – The New Testament: An Expanded Translation)
16 Now, while Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was constantly provoked and irritated in him, viewing with a critical eye the city which was full of idols.

Acts 17:16 (Amplified Bible – AMP)
16 Now while Paul was awaiting them at Athens, his spirit was grieved and roused to anger as he saw that the city was full of idols.

    Acts 17:16 (The Message)
    Athens
16 The longer Paul waited in Athens for Silas and Timothy, the angrier he got—all those idols! The city was a junkyard of idols.

Athens, the city of amazing man made architecture. Some of the best philosophical, and theological worldly thinkers came to this Areopagus.

(Archaeological Study Bible Notes) The Areopagus (see “The Areopagus”) was the main administrative body and chief court in Athens, representing that society’s intellectual elite. The Council of the Areopagus had ruled Athens before it had become a democracy in 620 b.c. By New Testament times the Areopagus retained authority only in the areas of religion and morals and met in the Royal Portico at the northwestern corner of the agora. Its members considered themselves the custodians of teachings that introduced new religions and foreign gods.

Paul looked around Athens and something in him was stirred up. He couldn’t sit back and watch people give themselves to idolatry.

Today we have idolatry on a highly sophisticated level. Most of the entertainment industry admits to occult practices, possession, and even satanism. They say they become the characters they play on the screen when they act. They yield themselves to spiritual influences, and play roles that teach knowledge, morals, and concepts contrary to the word of God.

It does not take much research to discover actors, and actresses confess these things from their own mouths.

We know the enemy can only imitate God. When Jesus filled us with his spirit we spoke in tongues because we YIELDED to him.

The same way we received the Holy Ghost is the same way we are to live our lives, YIELDED.

God wants us to submit to him. He wants to possess us. He wants our every word, action, and deed to be led by him. Just like Jesus, he only did the things he saw the father do, and say the things he heard the father say. (John 5:19)

What this world needs is Jesus. We are vehicles of him, instruments used by him. We have what this world needs, and if we listen, and read the word we have what this world needs to hear.

    1 John 2:17 (KJV Strong’s)
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

The more we YIELD the more his WILL will be accomplished!

  7. V2 sometimes it takes a lot of teaching and debate before someone believes and others never will give up on their traditional way of thinking. All we can do is pray for them and love them.

  8. 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

It is important to daily pray for our region, our nation, and this world. Just as Paul our spirit should be stirred up when we read the news. It should concern us that lives are wholly given to sin. The very though should drive us to prayer.

Father, we surrender to you that you may use us to reach someone today.

  9. 29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

I was raised Catholic and I would worship graven images. I didn’t know better because I hadn’t been explained or taught who Jesus was. All I knew was that you had to pray to Mary and the do the rosary for certain amount of times and go to church only on Sundays!!! But thank you Jesus for taking me out of that bond that I was in because those images can’t even help themselves much less me. I carry that burden inside me for this region that are still blind and don’t know who Jesus really is. We have been told since we came here to POFW that we take things to serious and that were always busy at church but I praise God for that because not until they get revealed who I serve they won’t understand why I do the things that I do. I am proud to be part of this church and to work for Gods kingdom in any way 🙂 there is a joy in me now that God has given me and ready to keep testifying the great works that God has done for me!!! I AM A WITNESS!!!! Hallelujah!!!

  10. For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭17‬:‭28‬ NLT)

It’s in you Jesus that I live for cause you have given me new life. Thanks you for your love and mercy and grace.
    ———————————————–

    “Turned the world upside down.”

“I want to do nothing short of changing this world. ”

    Amen.

  11. Reaching those with misguided faith.

    Acts 17:22
    Sermon on Mars Hill
So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects.

Thus he begins his sermon relating their belief in an unknown God to his faith. He contestd that Jesus is the Almighty that they believe is unknown.

We can take notes from this in dealing with our fellow believers in Christ from different theological backgrounds. Rather than argue about baptism we can leverge their faith in a manner that gains trust and love not strife and contention. We reach them on their level. We bring them in by sculptung their beliefs into the truth. Some will see it, some wont.

  12. Feeling lonely…

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

I have felt that the Lord has left me alone. Of course, looking back now, I was the one who left the Lord. I pushed him away with my action and sometimes inaction. However, seek Him, find Him, search for Him, call His name, He is there. I remember a song…

    Whisper His name
    Whisper His name
    Whisper His name
    And He will answer you

    Call out His name (Jesus)
    Call out His name (Jesus)
    Call out His name (Jesus)
And He will come to you

    Shout out His name (Jesus)
    Shout out His name (Jesus)
    Shout out His name (Jesus)
And He will run to you

For when we lose our selfish pride
And when we fall down on our knees
For when we lift our hands
And say You’re all I need

  13. NLT 18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. 19 Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.”

Just like today, new comers to the church want to hear the Word of God. Some may have never heard of Jesus, to them it may sound if Pastor is just babbling on and on. But they are drawn to the church by God, and want to know more about Jesus. Like Bro Emory said, “you aren’t drawn to the church by accident, but for a purpose”.

  14. 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

We live in the fastest growing city in United States, but not everyone knows or has been given the opportunity to know truth. Our hearts must continually be looking for someone that we can tell them who Jesus is. When we begin to see and feel like Jesus our spirits too will grieve when we see people steeped in false doctrine , idolatry and addictions. We have the key to their freedom. Through prayer, fasting and giving of ourselves to lead them to Jesus we can unlock their chains and set them free through the power of the name JESUS!

  15. MORE NOBLE

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

In our quest for MORE at The Pentecostals, my hope is that we can identify some areas of potential and focus our energy, effort and exhortation to expand, increase and strengthen those areas MORE and MORE.

Here in Acts 17 we find a unique comparison of the people in Berea to those of Thessalonica, stating that the people of Berea were MORE noble.

NOBLE – 2104. eugenes, yoog-en´-ace; well born, high in rank, or (figuratively) generous: — more noble, nobleman.

NOBLE – 1a: possessing outstanding qualities : illustrious
    b: famous, notable
2: of high birth or exalted rank :aristocratic
3a: possessing very high or excellent qualities or properties
    b: very good or excellent
4: grand or impressive especially in appearance
5: possessing, characterized by, or arising from superiority of mind or character or of ideals or morals

First Impressions are important. It is obvious by the definitions that to be MORE NOBLE is something that is characterized on the inside and revealed on the outside. Others should be able to identify this trait and quality at a glance.

    Evidenced once again at Athens

Acts 17:22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

Paul identifies them as IGNORANT based on his perception of them and what he observed of their worship practices.

In summary: Our attitude, actions and activities reveal to GOD, the devil and others who and what we worship. Lets purpose in our hearts and lives to be MORE NOBLE than ever before that we may present our WORSHIP of the ONE TRUL LIVING GOD JESUS to others in a MORE excellent, grand, impressive, high, pure, moral way that others will recognize that we have been with JESUS.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  16. 11, “And these were MORE noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

This is why it is important for us to read and search the Word of God daily, so that, we can know that the things being taught and preached to us are Truth from God’s Word.

  17. 6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also

That’s what we will be known as, those who turned the world upside down. And we would be fools to not want to be a part of it… i want to be a part of it.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

God sees when we’re being ignorant and he doesn’t dwell over it because he knew it would happen just like he knew that David would fall. He moves past it just like we should and he calls us to repentance because the day is soon tobcome when he will return for his bride and he wants us to be ready. He is faithful to his word and his promises and we would be wise to think on them daily.

  18. “Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.” Paul was stirred because he understood the truth. One that knows the truth should also be stirred, as one can see what has, and can take place following an idol/false god. As such the need for prayer to the one true God (Jesus) has never been greater. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

    More;

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

  19. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Noble peace prize winners spend years mastering their craft, studing, working, building, growing etc. Thomas Edison said “I have not failed. I’ve found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” The noble people mentioned in vs 11, “recieved the word with all readiness of mind” because they were willing to understand and accept. Philosophy and theology are growing and clashing in this era. They prove their station as noble by “searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” They studied to show themselves approved. This is the same character we need to hold on to be called noble, honorable, righteous. Search and be ready to recieve.

  20. 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

Every day, thank God that we are his children and give thanks to God for giving us another day to live on this earth and for giving us another breath so that we may praise his name and spread his name among the people

  21. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

    Ready,Set,Search

It’s good enough just to hear the word. But search it out. Dig deeper. A great composer once said that we must press our way through an art. To gain it’s secrets. Because that and knowledge raise men to the Devine. So we must search it out. Aam is known by what he knows. But how do we gain the knowledge? By searching it out.

  22. Spiritual Authority

I thank the Lord for the pastor and wife who has an authority over me. I pray that I listen to them with serenity and with the fullness of the gospel. Like Paul preached some people listened and some didnt. But where are the people who didnt listen are they lost sheep because of that they didnt listen?? I love the Lord and I listen ti them Lord. Thankyou for Your Word,Lord .

  23. 4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

“and of the chief women not a few.”

meaning it wasn’t just a few women, it was a lot of women! off the top of my head i can remember certain scriptures that talked about groups of women doing good things. this scripture always gives me the chills. all that is said is that many women believed. but still after they believed, what did they do next? brought their families to church? their children? husbands?

  24. 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

    25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
There is no doubt what my God can do he made the heavens and the earth.

  25. 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us.

We can rest assured that our great God is never far from us. This is a wonderful comfort:-)

  26. “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.” (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭17‬:‭30-31‬ NLT)

No if, ands or buts! It’s a commandment that all repent and turn to Him. It’s time for a lifestyle change, out with the old and in with the new!

  27. “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries. (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭17‬:‭24-26‬ NLT)

What a might God we serve.

  28. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

Yes we see a comparison here, and there is one thing that will always tell one off, which is exactly what the more noble people did; they searched the scriptures daily. If we are honest to ourselves, we can tell when one has been nurished by the Word daily…how? Because the fruit will show. More peace, more joy, more trust in The Lord, more faith. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. We must be in our daily source of life with a readiness of mind to recieve the word into our hearts and let it bring forth fruits changing is from the inside out.

  29. Acts 17:24 The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and doesn’t live in temples built by human hands. And he I is not served by human hands as if he needed anything. Rather he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.

  30. 6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

What testimony to have, to be a world changer. A catalyst for positive influence in the midst of darkness. If we surrender ourselves completely to Jesus, we can also turn this world upside down!

  31. 24) God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

  32. Gather more
And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. (‭Acts‬ ‭17‬:‭4-5, 12‬ KJV)

They had to fight to get and keep the more that they gathered. It wasn’t just that they told the more and they came. They had to continue to work on it because of the adversities around them. Fight through adversity and MORE will come.

  33. NLT
10 That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.
11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.
12 As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men.

If we could all believe in God’s word and trust in Him and if we have doubt in anything we have heard from a preacher or anyone that is to be in the will of God, then search the scriptures. Don’t always rely on what you here sometimes, the Bible says seek your own salvation.
    Philippians 2:12King James Version (KJV)
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Thank you Jesus always for your wonderful words to live by!!!
    I love you Jesus.

  34. Association

    6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

Jason and those with him were associated with Paul and Silas and the revolutionary teachings they preached, all because they received them. Those we receive are the ones we become associated with. There is coming a time when revival and harvest will not only be present in this region of Fort Worth but this region will become associated with the Church in its Apostolic power and authority. As Los Angelos became associated with the Azusa Street Revival, it’s wasn’t that all of Los Angelos was converted but for the season while it lasted, it became known as a place that had revival, where the supernatural was the norm.

    Luke 10:1-2, 8-9
1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.

2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:

9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
