1 Timothy 5

1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.

4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.

6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.

7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.

8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man.

10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.

11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;

12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.

13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.

16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

18 For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.

20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.

23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.

24 Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.

25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.

  1. 1. Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

    2. The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

    It bothers and frustrates me the way many young people today treat their elders as equals or even subordinates. What happened to showing respect to age and wisdom? Lord, help us teach ourselves and the next generation how you would have us treat those you call worthy of double honor.

  2. Honor is expensive

    17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

    These elders and our Pastor are well deserving of honor but their knowledge to lead us didn’t come cheap. These men paid the price of life over and over again to be able to speak in the authority that they speak. We should honor them with double honor as they have paid a double price for it. Let us keep them in our prayers and lift them up with honor every chance we get.

  3. Verses 1-5 MSG “Don’t be harsh or impatient with an older man. Talk to him as you would your own father, and to the younger men as your brothers. Reverently honor an older woman as you would your mother, and the younger women as sisters. Take care of widows who are destitute. If a widow has family members to take care of her, let them learn that religion begins at their own doorstep and that they should pay back with gratitude some of what they have received. This pleases God immensely. You can tell a legitimate widow by the way she has put all her hope in God, praying to him constantly for the needs of others as well as her own.”

    Same verses NKJV “Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity. Honor widows who are really widows. But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and[a] acceptable before God. Now she who is really a widow, and left alone, trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.”

    I thank God for a Mom who has shown me what true “Honor” means. I only pray Lord that you help me to instill the same into my children.

  4. 17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
    18 For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
    19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.

    We should always honor the elders/leaders in the church of the living God and those that are ministers in the word double honor. The ministers of the word in our lives should be honored very highly because we are depending on them to lead us in the path to heaven. Honor them with substance, do not muzzle them, stop them from delivering the message by withholding our support.
    We are taught not to even let someone accuse an Elder with an evil report without proof of what they are saying.
    This chapter talks of younger women what they are suppose conduct their lives and not be busy bodies.
    So much here to write about God bless POFW!!

    14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

    15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.

  5. iLove to eat MORE Word

    1 Timothy 5:3 Take care of any widow who has no one else to care for her. 4But if she has children or grandchildren, their first responsibility is to show godliness at home and repay their parents by taking care of them. This is something that pleases God.

    This scripture makes me chuckle…you might say, “Why?” Ok, glad you asked.

    One day I was talking to Selah and I told her, “Selah, please never grow up.” Well, she momentarily thought about it and then proceeded to tell me that she had to grow up because I was getting old and if she stayed young who in the world would take care of me when I was real old? That made me feel good and ties this scripture into real world application…but even more recently, she just declared that she wanted her own house so she could make her own rules…uhhh life goes full circle…I wonder what kind of rules she will have for me? “Dad, didn’t I tell you to stay away from the chocolate?” :/

  6. Remember, the sins of some people are obvious, leading them to certain judgment. But there are others whose sins will not be revealed until later. In the same way, the good deeds of some people are obvious. And the good deeds done in secret will someday come to light. (‭1 Timothy‬ ‭5‬:‭24-25‬ NLT)

    The things we do is no secret. No matter if we do evil or good on purpose. The fruit of our labour will show. And one day we will be judged. Secrets always find ways to the light.

  7. 21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality

    We must observe the things of God equally and with due diligence realizing we are doing the work unto God and not man.

    Colossians 3:23-24
    And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

  8. 1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

    2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

    Where has the respect gone these days? I was brought up saying yes ma’am and no ma’am, yes sir and no sir. In todays world the young have no respect for the elders. I have seen young people cut in front of an elder to get thru the door first or what ever the case may be. We need to respect of Elders and help them if they need help. The older women need to help the younger women. We have several young married couples they are watching the way the older women handle things. Why not reach out to a younger sister and be their mentor, we (I) don’t claim to know all but together we can find the answers. Let’s be an example for our younger women.

  9. 1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
    2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
    3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.

    I am saddened to say that I am apart of a generation that somehow has lost the true meaning of honoring and respecting those that are widows and elders. A generation that uses technology to rob from the generation that with the help of the Lord built the solid foundation that they could stand on. Yet they desire to shun the principles of the Word of God and seek “a new way” with “more state of the art , cutting edge ideas.” A generation that would video acts of hate and violence toward widows and men and women who has gained wisdom through years of living life that cannot be taught in a text book or found on Google.

    If there was one thing I could say to my generation this morning, it would be “Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:” Proverbs 23:10 Instead of shunning them and calling them old fashion. Give ear to their council and guidance. Yes, you live in a age that has the possibility to become millionaires by the age of 22 and retire by 45. Yet, something you learn in life by giving ear to those that have been on the road your walking and I’m not talking about the road to riches but the road of “life”

  10. MORE honor

    1 Timothy 5:17 (KJV Strong’s)
    17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

    Double – g1362. διπλοῦς diplous; from 1364 and (probably) the base of 4119; two-fold: — double, two-fold more.

    Honor – (Mounce’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and) [5507] τιμή timē 41x a pricing, estimate of worth; price, value, Mt. 27:9; price paid, Mt. 27:6; meton. a thing of price, and collectively, precious things, Rev. 21:24, 26; preciousness, 1 Pet. 2:7; substantial value, real worth, Col. 2:23; careful regard, honor, state of honor, dignity, Rom. 9:21; Heb. 5:4; honor conferred, observance, veneration, Rom. 2:7, 10; 12,10; mark of favor and consideration, Acts 28:10, honorarium, compensation, 1 Tim. 5:7 [5092] See honor; price; respect; value.

    1 Timothy 5:17 (Amplified Bible – AMP)
    17 Let the elders who perform the duties of their office well be considered doubly worthy of honor [and of adequatefinancial support], especially those who labor faithfully in preaching and teaching.

    We are to honor those who labor in the word and who do well. We are to give them more honor. Two-fold regard, compensation, veneration, price, value go to our Elders.

    Our elders have the experience, wisdom, and knowledge that we need to listen to a glean from. The word tells us to ask for the old paths.

    Elders in the faith will tell us their story so we can make the right decisions and avoid learning the hard way.

  11. She must be well respected by everyone because of the good she has done. Has she brought up her children well? Has she been kind to strangers and served other believers humbly? Has she helped those who are in trouble? Has she always been ready to do good? (‭1 Timothy‬ ‭5‬:‭10‬ NLT)

    The testimony of a wife is important. I often hear some ladies say “I’m just a stay at home mother” like its not an important role. Whatever the situation you find yourself in we most be the best at it. Give it our all. We may feel that our role or contribution is small and insignificant but every member of the body is important and their role is needed for unity and effectiveness.

  12. MORE RESPECT

    22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.

    There are ministers that exhibit extreme eagerness to show everyone how spiritual they think they are, by laying hands on everyone they can, however they can and when they can. They are eager to be the answer everyone is looking and become a distraction to the work of GOD. They are eager to chase down rumors to see if they are true to obtain information. These ministers lack respect and are riding an EGO trip.

    The greatest revelation a minister can receive is to understand that we are the conduit, vessel or cord that supplies and provides the power, healing or answer. We are not the source and the less we know about a situation the better off we are. Doubt and unbelief fueled by carnality is what causes men and women to seek to know everything. We must have FAITH in GOD and TRUST the man of GOD that we are submitted to.

    To the aspiring ministers.

    1. Be sensitive to the voice of GOD and you will never miss the will of GOD.
    2. Slow DOWN in laying hands on people. (Lazarus was dead 3 days)
    3. Dont conduct interviews to find out what is going on so you can “Pray”.
    4. Keep yourself away from sin, including gossip, chasing rumors is a deadly sport.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  13. 1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
    2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

    I had never seen so much respect for an elder till I came to POFW which I am so thankful for. We have lost that respect for the elders because we just see them as old but elders are full of wisdom and knowledge. I am blessed for every elder we have at POFW because they are their fathers/mothers. Their the ones that give us advise, suggestions, wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Elders play an important role in our lives which I am very grteful for. Sometimes the younger generation may think they don’t know anything but they sure do know more than us. Help us Jesus not be ignorant or proud flu but thankful for everything in Jesus Name 🙂

  14. 1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
    2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
    3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.
    4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

    This is the will of God. As I listen to the news, we see the exact opposite. You see mothers killing their babies, sons killing their father, and daughter killing their mother. You see both kind of killing, physical and mental. In this last days we will see this and so much more. Luke 12:53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
    It is up to us to build our children up to love and honor. Thank you Jesus for your lessons are clear and perfect in every way.

  15. 1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

    2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

    3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.

    Elders are pillars of the church. They have gained wisdom and insight and strength in the Lord. Their prayers give strength to the body and hold up the hands of the Pastor, they are a formidable offense & defense against the enemy in protecting the church. Pray for the elders to stay strong in the Lord.

    WIDOW. 1 a : a woman who has lost her husband by death and usually has not remarried.

    Single mothers can also be classified as a widow as they are abandoned/left desolate by their husbands, to support their children alone so many times. Scripture shows that assisting the widow – even these fatherless children – is a much needed ministry. Through our Bus ministry we have the opportunity to bless many of these families.

  16. 17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
    It is our duty to treat the elders of the church and those in ministry with the utmost respect and honor. Especially our Pastor and wife who give so much of themselves to the work of the kingdom. Let us give honor to whom honor is due.

  17. 1-2 Don’t be harsh or impatient with an older man. Talk to him as you would your own father, and to the younger men as your brothers. Reverently honor an older woman as you would your mother, and the younger women as sisters. (MSG)

    Now I’m not perfect but I am able to recognize disrespect. Whether it’s of myself where I have to bite my tongue or of others which bothers me all the more. I find myself to be right in the middle of this lost generation. I see the perspective of those older than I where I understand respect and honor and to whom and how it should be implemented. Also as I said though, I’m not perfect!

    Just recently my uncle was speaking and posed the question, “what will happen once our elders move on to their reward? What are we doing to step into their shoes? If we are at all?” He simply stated he has yet to find the answer and that’s sad to me. We as those under our elders must take in every bit of knowledge and wisdom our elders have to offer. Beyond that we must pray for this generation that there would be a burden to carry on the gospel and proclaim it as excellently as our elders have.

  18. 5:1Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers. 2 Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters. (NLT)

    Reading these verses remind me of the song,

    You’re my brother, you’re my sister
    So take me by the hand
    Together we will work until He comes
    There’s no foe that can defeat us
    When we’re walking side by side
    As long as there is love
    We will stand

    Unity is key! More Respect, More Unity!

  19. 1, “REBUKE not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;”
    2, “The elder women as mothers; the younger as sister, with all purity.”
    3, “Honour widows that are widows indeed.”
    17, “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.”

    MORE Respect and MORE Honour!

  20. 1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

    2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

    When we are in unity, it not only means that we are working together for one purpose, but it also compels us to treat one another with respect. When we have respect we are showing others that we have a high opinion of them, that we esteem them, admire them. RESPECT is something that is not used these days in our society, which is why there is so much disfunction and fighting in our world today and ultimately nothing can get accomplished. If our church is going to function as a unit, there must be respect fore one another and that will bring us in unity even more. MORE UNITY!

  21. 1 Timthy 4:7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives tales rather train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value but godliness has value for all things holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. That is why we loiabor and strive because we have put our hope in the living God who is the Savior of all people and especially of those who believe.

  22. 1 Timothy 5:1
    Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

    When my Grandma was alive, my mother cared for her in her last days. The way she used to be patient, feed her, bathe her, combed her hair, I saw the love she had for my grandma. Because of my Mom I learn to take care of my grandma the same way she did. I remember I used to read the bible for her and sit by her side for hours. That 1 year with her, was the best year of my life, I learn so much from her. She was a wise woman of God.

    Because of how I saw my Mother’s tender love her for Mother, I learn to respect the elderly people with love. We can learn so much from them!!!

  23. 1Timothy 5: 16 If any woman who is abeliver has widows in her care she should continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.

  24. 21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

    God orders us to be fair with everyone and not have favorites. We are to love one another jut like Jesus loves us.

  25. 24The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.

    When God rebuked David through the prophet Nathan he said “For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.” At a cost to his family. (2Sam 12:12).

    After Adam and Eve had eaten from the apple, they came to the realizaion of sin. It was obvious to them that they were naked, and uncovered by God. What they were oblivious to was what their sin would cost and how it would “trail behind them” (vs25) for generations to come. The obvious doesn’t always seem so obvious. Just like common sense is not so common. Nothing can be hidden from God, and it’s foolish to think that it can. Both good and sinful deeds maybe noticable or hidden, but God sees everything.

  26. This chapter is talking of a great deal of respecting our elders and all of us should even if we don’t always agree we shouldn’t disrespect them.

    In the same way, the good deeds of some people are obvious. And the good deeds done in secret will someday come to light. (‭1 Timothy‬ ‭5‬:‭25‬ NLT)

    We should also examine our walk and we should know that if we do sin and try to hide it….you CANT hide it. God see’s everything and sooner or later what you are doing will come into the light. If you are doing good don’t focus on getting credit of the applause of what you did we do good things because it’s right not to get the so called “pat on the back” or the “gold sticker” from people.

    Respect & Examine

  27. 1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
    2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
    3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.
    4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

    This is a very true statement. When my father passed away. I sought out the older brotheren of the church. And many came to help. Now that I am older I too understand this when youth are hurting. Thank God for the men in my life to guild me in the truth.

  28. vs-3
    Paul is saying honor your parents by meeting thier needs in an old age when they are truly destitute.
    Reading this verse makes me fill better. In the last few years my wife and i have taken care of my parents lately the out come of my parents has not been good PRAISE GOD the lord is in control.

  29. 1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
    2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
    Not only do we become a body in Christ, but we become family!

  30. 20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

    I have been at churches that do not practice this. I didn’t understand how important accountability and commitment was in ministry until POFW. I wholeheartedly believe this is why we are so successful and have been chosen for such a great harvest of souls. We hold God and His Word to the highest regard, claim congruence to the Book of Acts, being THE continuance of the church that the apostles established.
    Being the avenue, or vessel that God uses, being separate, one who has had a line of definition drawn around them consecrating themselves, and all they are and do, to the purposes of God, we need draw a line of separation to holiness to God.

    Thank you Jesus
    More Commitment
    More Jesus

  31. The Word teach and demands us to give honor to the elders, and to the parents, because said first the family has to take care of their elders and widows., returning back with love and gratitude.

  32. 1) Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father;and the younger men as brethren.

    I thank God that I am growing up in a house that has taught me to respect elders.

  33. 17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

    I can say that I’m thankful for the man of God in my life, my pastor, and other elders in the church who dedicate their lives for God and ministry, serving others. They are truly channels of blessing that the Lord JESUS has blessed us with.

    Romans 13:7New King James Version (NKJV)

    7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due,customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

  34. Don’t do anything half way. It sounds a lot like sports, but it’s in one of the verses from tonight.

    21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

  35. Bishop Foster.

    1 Timothy 5:17
    Concerning Elders
    The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.

    Tonight, we practiced this at DFC as Pastor Tom Foster was Bishoped. POFW will see the results of during 440. 440 May appear to have a slow start to some, but just as the hand of the Lord bright Elijah to the city gate before King Ahab, so shall the hand of the Lord bring revival before the Panther.

    The anointing rolls from the head down. Prepare to see a new level of authority in POFW and this region.

    Everything done in secret, whether it be good or bad, will come to light in due time. God sees all and He plans to reveal all. So don’t think because people can’t point you out right away means you are getting by without recognition of your deeds. Saying that, let’s play it safe and only do the good deeds rather than the bad

  37. Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. (‭1 Timothy‬ ‭6‬:‭6-7‬ NLT)

    Life isn’t living. Life is knowing God.

    So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. (‭1 Timothy‬ ‭6‬:‭8-9‬ NLT)

    What is true joy or hope? Where can it be found? Is it a promise of golden streets? Is it in escaping the fires of hell? No. All things are worthless in view of the surpassing value of simply knowing God and being known by Him. Oh, that I may know Him! To one day
    see the Savior who purchased my life by His very own blood, to see the King who suffered to die for a sinner like me…

    He is enough

  38. 22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.

    we have a hard enough time battling our own flesh but lets not be so dumb as to fall because of another mans sin.

  39. Rebuke not an elder !!!! 1. REBUKE not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 2. The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. 3. Honour widows that are widows indeed. 1 Tim. 5 ; 5 4. But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. 5. Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. I PRAISE YOU JESUS !!!! YOU ARE THE LIFTER OF MY HEAD !!!! YOU ARE JEHOVAH AND I WORSHIP YOU !!!!

  40. “I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.” Paul gave instruction, which was and still is relevant today. Dear God, help me to observant and obedient; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  41. 24 Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.

    I’m thankful for the blood of Jesus that washes away our sins, and the opportunity for true repentance if we have sinned since baptism. This proves the importance of foot washing. When we have our feet washed it is a representation of being baptized over again, and once again we are sin free, and all sins placed under the blood. This is what is represented in this scripture, the sins that go before us are those that have been put under the blood, those that follow after are sins that are unrepented sins and we will be judged for them on judgement day.

  42. 21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

    22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.
