Hebrews 5

1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.

3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.

4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

  1. 11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

    Paul said there are many things that needs to be said, yes some of them are hard sayings. Some of you being dull of hearing will have a hard time accepting this message.
    We need to understand the word of God more today than we do anytime. Paul said the time we should be teachers, we are still in need to be taught even the first principles of the oracles of God. My prayer God help us grow up and let your Spirit work in our lives. I want to be able to eat meat and not just milk only, where I will be unskillful in the Word.
    Lord let us step up to the next level and see what God can do!

  2. 7. When Jesus was on the earth, a man of flesh and blood, He offered up prayers and pleas, groans and tears to the One who could save Him from death. He was heard because He approached God with reverence. Voice

    It matters how we approach God with our prayers. If we demand our wants with arrogance and think He has to answer because of who we are, we are in for a long wait! On the other hand, if we approach Him with humility because of who He is, we are much more likely to receive what we ask for.

    2 Chronicles 7:14
    If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. KJV

    Matthew 7:11
    If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? KJV

  3. I truly love the Word of God!

    We at POFW are strong meat eaters! We are presented with the most bountiful and powerful men of God with His Word as any other congregation on this planet; I truly believe this. I understand He is pouring out His Spirit on all flesh and He is no respecter of persons. Consider this verse: Mathew 25:16 – 18 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.

    What a blessed people we are!

  4. Verses 11-14 NLT captions these verses with “A Call to Spiritual Growth”: “There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word.[c] You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.” In today’s world there are so many in such a rush to say they are mature and they don’t have to listen; when in fact, their disobedience shows how immature they are. Heed the warnings…..don’t become so dull that you cannot discern where you are.

  5. The cup of suffering.

    While he lived on earth, anticipating death, Jesus cried out in pain and wept in sorrow as he offered up priestly prayers to God. Because he honored God, God answered him. Though he was God’s Son, he learned trusting-obedience by what he suffered, just as we do. Then, having arrived at the full stature of his maturity and having been announced by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who believingly obey him. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭5‬:‭7-10‬ MSG)

    Jesus was God in flesh and because he flesh did not want to die he would cry out. It’s not because he was a lesser part of God, son, calling out to the bigger God, daddy. How ever he showed us an example to crucifying our flesh to get things done. Throught the crucifying of his flesh in pain and weeping of prayer he was able to walk in the authority that he should as God. When we follow his example and pray through the pain and weeping of our spirit we too are able to walk in the authority of Christ Jesus. I long daily to be a good example of him.

  6. 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

    You have the only name by which we can and must be saved. He has been so good and is so worthy, how can you help but serve Him with all gladness and obedience?!

  7. Babe in Christ.

    I know that ive only known the true gospel for 10yrs. And before that 40 years to know of Jesus. I pray that I will know the meat and milk of the Word. Thanking You, Jesus.

  8. hebrews 5:1
    For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to god that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

    god wants us to forgive and let go and also he wants you to forgive for all your sins and we can not for get that he sacrificed on the cross for are sins and to forgive as well. AMEN

  9. iLove to eat MORE Word

    Hebrews 5:12 NLT You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. 13For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.

    This is discipleship 101. The only way to grow and mature in the Word of God is to daily eat and digest His Word. We must become mature and overcome the temptations of unrighteousness. If we want to eat the meat of the Word, we must be able to digest it with all its correction.

  10. 1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

    2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.

    3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.

    4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

    This reminds me of how we as the church are called to stand in the gap. People in the world who don’t know God can’t do it for themselves, people who have walked away from God and are trapped in their sin aren’t in position to help themselves either. They need us to intercede for them, not because we are better than them but because we ourselves are human only saved by Gods amazing grace.

  11. but strong meat belonged to them that are full of age …

    The more grounded you become in the WORD, the better you handle the sharpness the words sometimes bear. When you are not grounded in spirit sometimes the WORD can hit you and you not deal with it properly. It can make you bitter and defensive.

  12. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

    Before becoming a teacher, one must be taught first.

  13. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

    13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

    God desires his people to grow up spiritually and be used to help and teach others not to be babes forever. We must eat solid spiritual food so that we can grow and as we grow we can help others.

  14. 9, “And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.”

    Acts 4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

    JESUS is the author (captian – Heb. 2:10) of our salvation, and it is only in His name that we can and must be saved.

  15. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

    13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

    14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

    Everyone when they start out is like a “baby” in Christ as they try to grow in his word, in prayer and in the things of God. But some people don’t want to get out of this stage and they want to keep themselves bottle fed because it is easier.

    But that is not what God wants for us, he wants us to grow in him and in his word, so that he can work through us to help other people who are in need, in need to hear God’s word.

    Ephesians 4:11-14 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepards, and the teachers, to equip the saints for the work of the ministry, for the building up to the body of Christ. Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. So that we may no longer be children tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

  16. MORE DISCERNMENT

    There is grave danger in sitting and sucking your thumb when we have been BLESSED with many opportunities to gain deep knowledge of the WORKS of Christ through the WORD of GOD. Our response to GOD determines our spiritual maturity. When served a ribeye steak if it is not chewed properly it will not digest and the great source of strength will be rejected.

    It is he goal of every parent to get their child off of the bottle that eventually does not satisfy their hunger level and teach them to EAT, beginning with food that is already prepared to digest, however the next step is to teach them to chew their own food.

    The epistle teaches us here that we establish our maturity level by how we respond to the WORD of GOD. If we spit it out or reject it then we are still babes in Christ. If we listen, heed and apply the WORD to our lives then we are becoming of full age to consistently digest the meat of the WORD of GOD and are equipped, prepared and able to discern good and evil in every aspect of life.

    My prayer today is that GOD grant us MORE DISCERNMENT to separate good from evil and follow after the LORD.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  17. 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

    We too must learn obedience through suffering.

  18. And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; (‭Hebrews‬ ‭5‬:‭9‬ KJV)

    We are indebted to Christ for his sacrifice. He has given us salvation. He conquered death, hell and the grave to give us life more abundantly.

    The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (‭John‬ ‭10‬:‭10‬ KJV)

  19. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
    14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

    Hallelujah Jesus! We all go through the milk stage spiritually but there comes a time when we have to stop being fed and grow up and start eating by yourself. Time to stop only recieving and start giving! I love how here at POFW Everything is lined up for you to learn all about the gospel. All the different classes that are provided and preachings are to make us bold in Christ so we may have the wisdom and knowledge to differentiate between God and the devil. I have been baptized for 7 years but for all those years I was drinking milk until I came to POFW and realized it’s not about recieving anymore it’s time to start giving. Thank you Jesus for leading us to POFW, where we have matured spiritually! We were bound but now I am MORE than a conqueror!!! 🙂

  20. 7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

    When we pray, we need to pray with a heart of sincerity and thankfulness, not arrogance. Lord help me to pray passionately!

  21. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

    As Bro. Wright so blunted stated a few weeks ago, it’s time for the Saints of God to grow up and get off the milk, and into the meat of the Word. Too many are content to just drink the milk, feel good and go about their daily life. This walk of faith is a consecrated, sacrificial life and we must process the meat of the Word in order to grow and mature in Him. If we can look back and we are the same place spiritually we were a year ago, 6 months ago, 1 month ago, we are not progressing. We must grow so that we give to others the things we have learned.

  22. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

    13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

    14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

    It is not enough to just go to church and get from God. We must grow in Him and share with others what God has done, can do and will do for those that will follow and obey his word.

  23. MORE GROWTH

    There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭5‬:‭11-12‬ NLT)

    We( I ) sometimes like to stay where we are at we allow ourselfs to be content in the relationship with Jesus. We just like to be average believers. Just as long as we make it to heaven. We don’t want to be more or even do more for him.
    Some should have more wisdom and understanding but some just don’t want it.
    I want MORE.

    For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭5‬:‭13-14‬ NLT)

    It’s time to grow up and to get i his word. And eat.

    We are made for More.

  24. Hebrews 5:12 in fact though by this time you ought to be teachers you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milknoit solid food! Anyone who lives on mil being still an infant is notacquinted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the nature who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

  25. 4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

    This verse is saying that no one can become a priest because he wants to be seen by everybody he has to be called by God.

  26. 11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn.
    12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
    13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
    14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. NIV
    God help us to grow up and do what you have us to do. It’s time we have the babes in the church and make sure they graduate to meat and not just milk.

  27. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

    13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

    14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
    Let us grow strong in Jesus so that we can eat meat, not just milk. Our strength comes from Him

  28. 11-14 I have a lot more to say about this, but it is hard to get it across to you since you’ve picked up this bad habit of not listening. By this time you ought to be teachers yourselves, yet here I find you need someone to sit down with you and go over the basics on God again, starting from square one—baby’s milk, when you should have been on solid food long ago! Milk is for beginners, inexperienced in God’s ways; solid food is for the mature, who have some practice in telling right from wrong.

    I read this chapter this morning and could not get passed these verses because of Bro. Shatwells message then I read it in the message version.

  29. In order to grow, we must learn. The ‘teens’ and ‘adults’ in Christ have to teach and walk with the babes in Christ. We should comfort and teach the babes so that they can grow and bring others to God!

  30. vs-11
    Reading this verse the thought of Pastor Watts came to mind im sure when our great Pastor is preaching or teaching this vs has to be in his thought process a time or two

    vs-11
    Ther is much more i would like to say about this but it is difficult to explain especially since you are spiritually dull and dont seem to listen.

  31. IN sunday nights great service at the end when we prayed over a dog i was wondering what kind of pooch it was? Then i had a reverlation it had to be a GERMAN SHEPARD OR A SHEEPDOG
    A SHEPARD OR A SHEEP

  32. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
    14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

    How do we learn? Through faults. Through failures. Through teaching. How is a child to leant how to eat meat? By first giving them cereal in the milk Nd making it thicker. Then soft sold food. Then harder more complex foods. To the point of by that when we become teens and adults. Our palets become sensitive to tastes that are good and bad. But it starts with milk. If we are the caregivers to the babies of te church then we must know when to give the stringer meals. So many times I have seen where the caregiver becomes scared to give them anything other than milk. Yet how are they to grow? If not challenged. If not tasting things that they like or don’t like. Yes we ourselves must be sensitive to the Spirit. And allow our pastor to do his calling. But with the growth that our church sees. We must be ready to be used to care for all kinds of people.

    More revival.
    More 440.
    More Now.
    More of Him.
    More meat.

  33. Hebrews 5: 13-14
    For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
    verse 14
    But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

    Time to STOP drinking milk and start eating the real stuff SOME GOOD MEAT. Its time to mature in the word of God. Time for us to help feed the babies that are been born in our church and help them grow.

  34. “Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.” Paul had to be blunt as there were some that would not listen. Dear God, help me to grow more in you and less in self; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  35. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

    13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

    14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

    The sheep that eat the meat are the ones that produce milk for the babies. We need to care of each other and keep the babies alive!!!

  36. 6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

    Melchizedec was not a Jew

    He was not a Levite or from the Levitical linage of Aaron.

    There are no records of his birth or death.

    Some think he was Jesus

    He is a mysterious one in the bible. I have looked all over and cannot find any definate answers on him.

    The preistly order of Melchizedec doesn’t depend on linage.

    This is a very cool study. Does anyone else have anything about him?

  37. 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

    9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

    In our trails and tribulations is where we learn to be patient and obedient. We suffer during this process, but God knows how much we can handle. We grow stronger and more mature in the Lord and when it’s over we will be rewarded with His Blessing.

  38. Discerning shows maturity

    14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

    The mature are defined by those have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

    verb (used with object)
    1. to perceive by the sight or some other sense or by the intellect; see, recognize, or apprehend:
    They discerned a sail on the horizon.

    2. to distinguish mentally; recognize as distinct or different; discriminate:
    He is incapable of discerning right from wrong.

    Mounce lexicon defines:
    GK G1360 | S G1253   διάκρισις   diakrisis   3x
    a separation; a distinction, or, doubt, Rom. 14:1; a discerning, the act of discerning or distinguishing, Heb. 5:14; the faculty of distinguishing and estimating, 1 Cor. 12:10*

    1Cor. 12:10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ABILITY TO DISTINGUISH (discern) BETWEEN SPIRITS, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. (ESV)

    1 Cor 12:29-30 lists many gifts that not all people have and makes no mention of the gift of discerning of spirits.

    In my opinion, spiritual maturity can be measured by the proficiency of this gift. This level maturity merely shows that one is ready for the deep meat of the word.

  39. 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

    Jesus I come to you father, that you are the son of God,for that we your children Jesus, have leaned obedience from you Jesus, that you have left us an example,that we should learn humble obedience to the will of God, by all our afflictions. … of the law, which you did Jesus; but unto death: through sufferings you Jesus became obedient to death.

    Matthew 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you do ye even so to them for this is the law and the prophets.

    2 Corinthians 7:16 I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things.

  40. 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

    9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

    We have to die daily, Jesus gave his life so we could live. We have to suffer and sacrifice our flesh just like Jesus. Obedience is what God is looking for.

  41. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

    Being a babe is normal in the growth process, but staying a babe is not normal in the natural world or the spiritual world. Babes need feeding, burping, diaper changing, and cannot be left alone. They need protection from parents 24/7. They cannot stand, walk much less withstand the pressures of life. So, naturally & spiritually, we must grow past this stage and learn to stand, walk and run…even get into waters deep enough to swim in as Pastor preached! Growing is accomplished by reading his word, hearing the word preached, prayer and the continual renewing of our minds.

  42. Hebrews 5:7 In the days of His flesh Jesus offered up definite, special petitions for that which He not only wanted but needed and supplications with strong crying and tears to Him Who was always able to save Him out from death, and He was heard because of His reverence toward God His godly fear, His piety, in that He shrank from the horrors of separation from the bright presence of the Father.

    Another version reads it this way

    Hebrews 5:7 Yet while Christ was here on earth he pleaded with God, praying with tears and agony of soul to the only one who would save him from premature death. And God heard his prayers because of his strong desire to obey God at all times.

    We see how by example our Lord Jesus shows what prayers are heard.  Sometimes when trouble comes or a situation, we first must go to the One who can save and deliver and pray, speak, to Him.  Then we see why he was heard.  Because of his fear, reverent respect, and the other version reads it, strong desire to obey God.  Forthermore, we see the form in which he prayed… It says tears and agony of soul.  KJV says strong crying and tears into him that is able to save him from death.

    We aren’t advised, “we should pray” but it is expected. The bible says “when you pray”.

    We have to have this Godly respect to approach God when we approach him in prayer and know that he is able to save us from death.

    If sin produces death that is more that enough reason to pray to Him that can save you.

    There are so many examples of prayers in the bible.  Prayers for the saints, prayers for the authorities, supplications..

    Let’s not forget who has absolute complete authority our Lord Jesus and approach Him with that respect.

    Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

  43. Have you ever heard God, call you SON? What a glorious thing to hear from the Almighty God!

    5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

    What an awesome God we have, to do all this for us! Eternal Salvation, for those who obey him! “OBEY”…………………………………………………………………………..

    Revelation of his word, inspiration by the Holy Spirit, enlightened wisdom, or the gift of prophesy, are sources of that strong meat. God promised in his word, that he gives wisdom liberally, so ask him in Jesus name, wait, watch, observe, and don’t forget to seek him too. “He will do his word, and reward you!”………………….

    14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

    “Lean on his WORD”…………………………………………………………….

  44. 12) For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have heed that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have heed of milk , and not of strong meat.

  45. Milk and strong meat !!!! 12. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13. For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised !!!!
