Acts 20

1 And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them, and departed for to go into Macedonia.

2 And when he had gone over those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece,

3 And there abode three months. And when the Jews laid wait for him, as he was about to sail into Syria, he purposed to return through Macedonia.

4 And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.

5 These going before tarried for us at Troas.

6 And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days.

7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

8 And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together.

9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.

10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.

11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.

12 And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.

13 And we went before to ship, and sailed unto Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, minding himself to go afoot.

14 And when he met with us at Assos, we took him in, and came to Mitylene.

15 And we sailed thence, and came the next day over against Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus.

16 For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.

17 And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.

18 And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons,

19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:

20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house,

21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

22 And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:

23 Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.

24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

25 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.

26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.

27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel.

34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.

35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

36 And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all.

37 And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him,

38 Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship.

  1. 26. Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.

His departing speech had to have been difficult, but at least it was made slightly easier by having no regrets…washed in the blood of Jesus, and free from the blood of everyone else.

  2. The beginning of this chapter in verse 2 MSG spoke to me about encouragement. “Traveling through the country, passing from one gathering to another, he gave constant encouragement, lifting their spirits and charging them with fresh hope.”

In verses 7-12, the story of Eutychus spoke to me about being alert. This young man fell asleep (literally); but, so many are seeming to fall asleep spiritually. If you begin to allow things into your life (things that you know you shouldn’t), little by little you begin to die.

The end of the chapter spoke to me about giving. Not only monetarily; but, of yourself. Verse 28 MSG says “Now it’s up to you. Be on your toes—both for yourselves and your congregation of sheep. The Holy Spirit has put you in charge of these people—God’s people they are—to guard and protect them. God himself thought they were worth dying for. Verse 32 MSG “Now I’m turning you over to God, our marvelous God whose gracious Word can make you into what he wants you to be and give you everything you could possibly need in this community of holy friends.”

  3. 20 I never shrank back from telling you what you needed to hear, either publicly or in your homes.

That’s what we need in our lives, thank God we have a Pastor who tells us what we need to hear, preaching straight from the bible. Unlike other churches, where the pastor has to preach from selected verses and ignore other verses. Yes at times, I have my heart pricked by the message being delivered, but it causes me to search myself. It is wise to listen what is being preached and being obedient to the Word of God.

  4. TAKE A LEAP TO WHAT REALLY MATTERS

24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

This verse is dear to my heart. You see, no matter what comes our way HIS WORD AND SPREADING THE GOSPEL IS THE ONLY IMPORTANT THING. Everything else doesn’t matter. SERVE OTHERS AS HE SERVED, LOVE OTHERS AS HE LOVED, BE MERCIFUL FOR HE IS MERCIFUL. TEACH, TEACH, AND TEACH SOME MORE. NOTHING AND I MEAN NOTHING SHOULD STOP YOU FROM SERVING GOD WITH YOUR GIVEN TALENT. WE SERVE A LOVING GOD. THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

The Apostle Paul was willing to declare that he had preached the truth to his generation. We should all as ministers of this gospel be willing to preach what God has gave us. Let’s be bold and declare the whole council of God.

  6. 33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel.

34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.

Today people seek welfare, charity, government hand outs, anything that can get their hands on and they call it entitlement. People don’t realize how costly the benefits we have are. This is true with, not only this country but also the church. The Word we read daily was written in blood, the blood of the prophet, the blood of the israelites, the blood of the apostles and the blood of JESUS.
While there is life in the blood, you have to give it. We have to share the Word at all costs.
The day is coming, the Bible tells us, where we will be persecuted and killed for our faith, but hold true, we will be blessed because we too will have given all.

  7. 24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

I pray that we all finish the course with joy and ministry. For our life will have been in vain if we try to live for Jesus but in the end we decide to just give up. Don’t ever give up and keep on going, for God has a great reward for his children who follow after his steps.

  8. 29-30 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

We must guard our minds. Paul states that men shall arise from our selves. I take this to mean that some of the POFW people might fall victim to the grievous wolves. Years ago Bro Greene preached about these wolves. Wolf Killers, I believe was the subject. I believe with the progress that we are making into the enemies camp that satan will release more of his demons, tricks and deceit to dissuade and distract us from our goals.

POFW – Stay the course. Run your race. Stand on the promises of God. Do not listen to the howling of the wolves.

  9. iLove to eat More Word

except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead. (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭20‬:‭23‬ NLT)

Some might think the Holy Ghost was revealing to him the things to come to avoid them, but in this case the Holy Ghost was showing him what he was going to go through and he still decided to go through it.

Paul is a great example of doing what he knew God wanted him to do, even when prophets and prophetess we’re trying to warn him of the pain suffering he would go through.

  10. 24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

24 But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God. (NLT)

What a way to live your one life! What a guide line to follow…

“But none of these things move me…”
We see the troubles and trials but don’t give them glory, make nothing of them.
Peter saw troubles arise, yet he never allowed it to stop him from preaching the gospel and spreading the love of Jesus.

“neither count I my life dear unto myself…
Paul being human new his life was dear to himself but as according to Luke 14:26 we are to hate our own life, in a submission and obedience to the Will of God.

    Luke 14:26 (KJV)
26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

“so that I might finish my course with joy…”
If we are filled with the spirit, we will show fruits of the spirit; joy. We must run this race with the fruits of the spirit!

    Hebrews 12:1 (KJV)
12 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

“and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus…”
Thank God, He has trusted us with ministry. We will receive strength through Him.

and lastly “to testify the gospel of the grace of God.”
Our main goal, our number one ministry, our life line. Testifying the Grace of God, sharing His love, proclaiming his Glory, proving His works!

    Luke 14:23 (KJV)
23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

  11. 21 I have had one message for Jews and Greeks alike—the necessity of repenting from sin and turning to God, and of having faith in our Lord Jesus.
22 “And now I am bound by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem. I don’t know what awaits me,
23 except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead. (NLT)

Paul knew the importance of God’s word, he had burden to teach lost souls because he understood that it was their souls that weighed in the balance of eternity. He didn’t always know exactly what was to come, but he knew that for the glory of God, he would continue to face trial after trial.

Like Paul, we should have no fear in proclaiming God’s word, no fear when an unlikely circumstance comes our way. Rather, rest assured that all we do, whether it seems good or bad, is all to the glory of God. You may suffer and endure some pain, but always remember verse 24, as Paul said it best: “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God. (NLT)”

  12. FINISH STRONG

24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

Anybody can START, but who is going to FINISH STRONG. The apostle gives us great revelation into the determination and source by which he entered the Ministry. In his ministerial testimony of the many perils the LORD had brought him through, Paul recognized that the LORD JESUS himself had granted him the opportunity to be in ministry.

As believers and ministers of the GOSPEL we must be of the mindset that nothing can or will move us from the calling of JESUS to fulfill and complete HIS Kingdom work here on earth.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iCommit
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  13. 23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. 24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.

Even when Paul knew what may happen to him he put his life in Gods hands and let him take control. Everday of his life he took a leap of faith to go out and preach to the lost and God was always with him. I started asking myself this question, I know God is always with me but when was the last time I took a leap of faith? When was the last time you took a leap of faith? Was it like Paul, everyday or is it when you hear Gods voice but you ignore it and don’t have faith? Just remember God is always with you and when we give our life to him he will carry us ever step and leap we take! 🙂

  14. Acts 20:17 From Miletus Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church. When they arrived he said to them. You know how I lived the whole time I was with you from the first day I came into the province of Asia. I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots ofmyJewish opponents. You know that I have no it hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.

  15. 27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
We should be a witness unto all. It is not our place to decide who should know the truth and who shouldn’t.

  16. The history of the church. I have been enjoying reading acts. It has showed us were we came from. But it also shows us where the true power comes from. The Holy Ghost. The power of God to us. Thank you Jesus for your spirit.

  17. 24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

Jesus loves us so much that he died on the cross for our mistakes, how can we not live out the plans he has for us? We cannot just simply say we love Jesus and not prove it, we must live a life pleasing to God, by spreading his word all across the nation telling people about his everlasting love!

  18. 18 And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons,

Everything that Paul did was so selfless, I’m sure there were days that he didn’t feel like teaching but he did it anyways. He knew what his prepared was, and it didn’t matter what came against him, he steadily matched toward his firewall. Unmoved, unshaken I pray we get ahold of this kind of determination in these last days.

  19. Acts 20:35 (NETFull)
35 By all these things, I have shown you that by working in this way we must help the weak, and remember the words of the Lord Jesus that he himself said, ʻIt is more blessed to give than to receive.ʼ”

    Acts 20:35 (AMP)
35 In everything I have pointed out to you [by example] that, by working diligently in this manner, we ought to assist the weak, being mindful of the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, It is more blessed (makes one happier and moreto be envied) to give than to receive.

Weak (Olive Tree Enhanced Strong’s Dictionary) g0770. ἀσθενέω astheneō; from 772; to be feeble (in any sense): — be diseased, impotent folk (man), (be) sick, (be, be made) weak.
    AV (36) – be weak 12, be sick 10, sick 7, weak 3, impotent man 1, be diseased 1, be made weak 1;
to be weak, feeble, to be without strength, powerlessto be weak in means, needy, poorto be feeble, sick

Though all men need Jesus there is special direction that we help those who are weak. We are to reach out to people who are sick, poor, frail, handicapped, and suffering.

Many ask the question of why things happen to them. Perhaps one reason is that God knows special care and effort will be made to that person who is now weak that they would have received had these things not happened.

God help us to reach the weak and lead them to you.

  20. A Time To Grow

31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

We will find ourselves going through seasons of learning in our walk with God where after a time we are testing with how we are able to apply the knowledge and wisdom presented to us during the time of teaching. Sometimes this teaching comes through a man of God, sometimes through private devotion, but other times through trials themselves. Not every trial is a test; some are lessons. When we go through challenges, it prepares us for what’s ahead, whether it be a difficult time or a blessed time or simply an important decision. Each day we are presented with a multitude of opportunities to learn and grow, what are we doing with those opportunities.

    Ecclesiastes 3:1
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

  21. One way out!

9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.

There is only one way out of the church.
It begins with a long fall and then death. I thank God for a Pastor that keeps one hand on me so that if I slip a little he is there to be sure I don’t fall. But if I do fall he has enough Holy Ghost to wake me back up! There is only one way out and that is death.

  22. “Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.” Paul (the man of God, after repentance and being changed by God) gave them Jesus (God) in his actions and speech; therefore he proclaimed that he would be pure, and ready for judgement day. Can we (I) say the same? Dear God, forgive me, so that my actions and speech may be acceptable also on my day of judgment; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. In God we trust! What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  23. Timing is everything. Some times it is hard to wait for it. Like the vision. We just have to sight.

And there abode three months. And when the Jews laid wait for him, as he was about to sail into Syria, he purposed to return through Macedonia. (‭Acts‬ ‭20‬:‭3‬ KJV)

  24. I remember when I used to fall asleep during preaching and I would fall in deep sleep when there was teaching. But now God has open his eyes to his words. And I seek wisdom and understanding from him! It’s food for my soul.

And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. (‭Acts‬ ‭20‬:‭9‬ KJV)

  25. But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God. (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭20‬:‭24‬ NLT)

We all need to have this verse burning inside of us. Our lives are worth nothing without Him! We were made to exalt and glorify Jesus everyday He blesses us with breath to breathe. We must do His work! We must reach others! We must reach the world!

  26. MSG of Acts 20:22-24
“But there is another urgency before me now. I feel compelled to go to Jerusalem. I’m completely in the dark about what will happen when I get there. I do know that it won’t be any picnic, for the Holy Spirit has let me know repeatedly and clearly that there are hard times and imprisonment ahead. But that matters little. What matters most to me is to finish what God started: the job the Master Jesus gave me of letting everyone I meet know all about this incredibly extravagant generosity of God.”

Paul didn’t let the “Buts” in his life keep him from doing what really matter to him, and that was sharing the gospel of the grace of God with everyone he met.
None of the “Buts” in this life should matter to us either. All that should matter to us, as a child of God, is sharing the gospel of the grace of God with everyone we met.

MORE Sharing the Gospel of the Grace of God!

  27. 24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

The life of the gospel is ministry or selflessly serving others, sharing te good news of salvation. Once we starting looking at ourselves, or holding our lives dear, that’s when it begin to become hard. It brings to discomfort, and becomes cumbersome and inconvenient. Then you start counting the pain and the struggle and the beatings and the cost. And the joy seems to go…away. But we must see the example of Paul and all the other apostles and prophets and teachers. It is well said that it is better to give than to receive. We have to finish and give ourselves away and loose our life that we may find it in Him. Jesus gave us the same example. He came to serve and minister to the needs and gave himself away that we may have life in Him.

  28. Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. (‭Acts‬ ‭20‬:‭28-31‬ ESV)

Lord I pray over my church family. Let’s us be in unity and have compassion for each other.

  29. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all. And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him, Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship. (‭Acts‬ ‭20‬:‭28-38‬ KJV)

  30. Not mine will, but thine be done.

And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done. (‭Acts‬ ‭21‬:‭11, 13-14‬ KJV)

We all pray prayers that seek the “will” of GOD, but as we see those prayers being answered we fear truth, we fear the unknown. Whether it concerns family issues, a job situation, or simply just relationships that you hope for. Sometimes the will of GOD doesnt feel right because its not according to what we want/desire at the time. But its when we truly need to trust in The Lord with all of our heart and lean not unto our own understanding….even when it hurts. He knows what is best for us, we just need to learn to accept with an open heart and an open mind.

  31. v28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

GOD has not only design the Church, bit also PSID the price that was necessary to bring it into existence. Like all construction projects, the price for building HIS Church was high, for it was purchase with HIS PRECIOUS BLOOD .
    Thank you JESUS!!!

  32. 24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

What can separate us from the love of God….neither height, not depth, not anything….we must have the same resolve as Paul that none of these things in life move us away from the calling, mission and purpose of God in our life.

  33. I believe when Paul said “Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.” (vs10) it was because he had heard of such power by the prophets Elijah and Elisha (1Ki 17:20& 2Ki 4:34) who had similar encounters. Jesus never streteched himself to raise the dead; He spoke life. We have His Spirit indwelling in us, also demonstrated by Paul here to be the vessel of such a miracle. Evey miracle is different, because each person and circumstance is diffent. I bet Eutychus will never fall asleep in the middle of preaching again, especially near a window.

  34. Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. (‭Acts‬ ‭20‬:‭21‬ KJV)

Paul testifies to the Jews and also the Greeks, for Paul didn’t limit his messages and he also didn’t limit his audience either, for Paul wanted to preach the word of God to all the people, for everything we do through the day of our trails, for our God well draw us and pull us from out of the situation we got ourselves into, why repentance was so in needed, and why it was so important to do and how it should show itself, what was involved in the statement that Jesus was the Christ our mighty God,and why men should believe in Him, and what works were the proper fruit of faith.!!!!! In Jesus Name Amen !!!!!!

  35. 28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

We must be in unity, lifting up the hands of our Pastor, praying for him as he watches over this flock, protecting our church from the ones the enemy would send in our midst.

  36. Break bread !!!! 7. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
