Acts 17

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

33 So Paul departed from among them.

34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

  1. 22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

    23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

    24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

    25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

    26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

    Paul stood in Mars hill and preached Jesus unto them. We do not need to be in superstitions but the message of the truth. Jesus Christ and him crucified, this is the message the world needs to hear. Jesus will forgive our sins, if we will repent. The cross was not in vain, but our sins can be forgiven, washed away from baptism in Jesus name.
    When Paul preached of Jesus being our King in the kingdom of God these people used it to cause strife with the prevailing government . There is still strife today when Jesus is preached as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
    These disciples of Jesus was turning the world upside down and causing turmoil inside out with their message. I wonder what would happen today if we worked with the same fever these disciples. Could we turn our world upside down and cause a great turmoil.

  2. MORE WORLD CHANGERS

    5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
    6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
    7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

    Often the doctrines of JESUS oppose the decrees of man. As we witness here the testimony of the disciples preceeded them in the fact that they were recognized as WORLD CHANGERS. They preached King JESUS and were recognized for their doctrine.

    Our generation is craving MORE WORLD CHANGERS for the last days. Will we stand up and speak TRUTH to a lost and confused world. May GOD help us to preach JESUS to others today.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGIve

  3. 23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

    This scripture here takes me back in my mind to when i was struggling with my addiction to drugs. In NA/AA and Ala-non . They do serve and UNKNOWN God. Because they dont want to offend any one ,everyone has their own higher power.

  4. Just keep talking and walking!

    At the phrase “raising him from the dead,” the listeners split: Some laughed at him and walked off making jokes; others said, “Let’s do this again. We want to hear more.” But that was it for the day, and Paul left. There were still others, it turned out, who were convinced then and there, and stuck with Paul—among them Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris. (‭Acts‬ ‭17‬:‭32-34‬ MSG)

    Many people will walk away from truth and simply ignore it. And that’s ok. They will answer to The Lord. Keep preaching and praying for their souls.
    And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. (‭Matthew‬ ‭10‬:‭14-15‬ KJV)

  5. iLove to eat more Word

    And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men. (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭17‬:‭11-12‬ NLT)

    This scripture is key to making more disciples. The key is home Bible studies. As we teach our new disciples to read and study the Scriptures, the Scriptures will reveal more and more light. The light of the word of God will lead the believers into a more secure relationship with Jesus

  6. 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

    When we see the people in our city giving themselves to other false Gods, we should also be stirred, to want them brough to the gospel of Jesus. For he is the one true word that people can live by and be saved. But we need a hunger and passion for people that are lost so that we can help them be brought over to see the truth.

  7. 25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

    26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

    27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

    28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

    We do not need to be boastful in ourselves, for when there is a move of God it is not because of us, it is all because of him! We must remember that he does not need us to move, but rather he wants to use us!! For it is only through him that we live and breathe!!

  8. 5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

    6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
    Make an uproar, turn this word upside down, change the atmosphere, by bringing down His Glory By His Holy Ghost. How can this be accomplished PRAYER & PRAISE!!!!! Make a change better yet BE THE CHANGE THIS WORLD NEEDS!!!!

  9. 22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
    23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

    We share the gospel with all. Because there are those even today that Prague and worship but don’t know truly who they are doing that too. When we understand and realize the true power that we have that God has give us.

  10. 6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

    Pastor quoted this verse today, “World Changer”. What does your testimony say of you? Do the people around you see Christ when they see you? Can you say, be a imitator of me as I am if Christ?
    We are living in a age that is in desprit need of God. This country on a daily basis is becoming more and more a Godless Country. This is now, when the true worshippers will worship God in spirt and in truth. Stand up people of God, rise up and stand up to the enemy and say I will bow down to conformity and this world!

  11. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.
    26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.
    28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’[b] As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’[c]

    God doesn’t need us but we need God!!! We may think we know everything but we don’t and we need to give our life in his hands. We are his children, He is our example and we need to run after him! He has a plan for each and everyone one of us and he will lead the way for you! 🙂

  12. The Jews who did not believe caused trouble for the Christians. They persecuted them. The Christians broke tradition. They taught a side of God that was missed previously. The Jews expect the messiah to be and act a certain way and when Jesus did not fit that mold they disregarded him. They were bound by their religious traditions. A spirit of religion. It’s easy to see from our prospective that even if they chose not to believe they were still not acting in the likeness and teaching of God. God is not the author of confusion. Stirring up others to cause panic/chaos/division is not the will of God. Even though these Jews are not a great example of how to be they can be a reminder to us to check our personal relationship with God to make sure we are acting in accordance with him no matter what others are doing.

  13. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

    30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth

    In my profession we come across many symptoms for failing machines. Unfortunately there are times when a symptom was treated and not the root of the issue. Today our world is filled with symptoms. There is a great display of immorality, sin, and iniquity. People are loving less, and less, and falling away more, and more. However we have to realize that treating the symptoms won’t fix the problems.

    The issue is the heart. If someone says they are sorry for their sins but heir heart doesn’t change then their repentance was futile. The heart must be turned to God. The way we reach the heart is by preaching Christ and him crucified. People need to hear about Jesus and not the problem they need to fix. Once they are born again the heart will be changed, and then the problem will be fixed.

  14. “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent”. The man of God told them what was to come. Dear God, let not my heart become hard to your word; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. “One nation under God”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  15. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (‭Acts‬ ‭17‬:‭11‬ KJV)

    Searching the scriptures daily. That is something that I can improve upon. While I read, I am not sure that I search for specific things in the word daily. Lord help me to be more of a seeker than a slimmer while I am reading.

  16. v11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

    Praise GOD that we can approach GOD in a positive way. Believing and excepting to receive our healing , miracle, our anointing.
    No need to live in a provaty mentality . We have HIS PROMISES.We have HIS WORD.
    ” Search the scriptures daily to see if its so.”

    Yes HE still fills with the Holy Ghost
    Yes HE still heals
    Yes HE IS STILL THE SAME YRSYERDAY TODAY AND FOREVER .
    and yes HE WILL BE THE BEST FRIEND WE HAVE EVER HAD AND HAVE.
    YES HE IS STILL FAITHFUL.
    YES HE STILL HAS A WORD FOR YOU AND ME
    GOD STILL SPEAKS.
    YES GOD STILL DOES MIRACLES.

    WE are not excused from NOT having FAITH.
    KEEP SEEKING KEEP BELIEVING don’t ever stop.
    There’s no place to stop. Go in the name of the LORD . THANK YOU JESUS FOR A RECEIPTED HEARTS . RECEIVE IN JESUS NAME!!!!
    THANK YOU LORD FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE AND ARE DOING AND ARE GOING TO DO
    AWESOME SERVICE TONIGHT !!!!
    THANK YOU JESUS FOR THE MOVING OF YOUR SPIRIT !!! THANK YOU CHURCH FOR RESPONDING TO HIS SPIRIT!!!!

    I RECEIVE MY MIRACLE IN JESUS NAME !!!

  17. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. (‭Acts‬ ‭17‬:‭11‬ ESV)

    My prayer is that our hunger for the kingdom of God would increase. We would have MORE prayer, MORE word and MORE soul winning.

  18. Verses 22-23 MSG “So Paul took his stand in the open space at the Areopagus and laid it out for them. “It is plain to see that you Athenians take your religion seriously. When I arrived here the other day, I was fascinated with all the shrines I came across. And then I found one inscribed, to the god nobody knows. I’m here to introduce you to this God so you can worship intelligently, know who you’re dealing with.” I am so thankful to know who my God is! We must share this gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ as there are so many who are still looking for that missing piece (peace) in their lives.

  19. 11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.

    The people were eager, yearning, and searching for God! How sad it is to think that there are times when we take it for granted to hear a powerful sermon and feel the move of God in a church building. While others are in basements or in hiding cause of the laws in the area. What a privilege we have to come into His House and sit in the presence of His Glory!

  20. 3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

    24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

    We see Paul here preaching Jesus and the resurrection and then giving them later on the revelation that some still have not seen. The 23rd verse tells you that the same God that made all of this is the one that they crucified. It’s not hard to find the truth if you just look for it. It’s right there.

  21. ound them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

    As we allow God to govern and lead our lives we become the world changers that this world desperately needs. To become world changers we must first be changed ourselves allowing God to make us into his image. We are to constantly grow in our knowledge of Jesus and be changed by the word of God.

  22. While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw everywhere in the city. (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭17‬:‭16‬ NLT)

    Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him, for Paul sense that he had preferred to wait until Timothy and Sailas arrived from Berea before Paul knew that he could have done anything to minister in Athens. But mean while when he saw that the city was given over to idols, for Paul knew that the city of Athens was desperately in need of the word of Jesus , for Paul compelled to preach to the city of Athens with the gospel of Christ.!!! In Jesus Name Amen!!!!

  23. Is Christ !!!! 1. NOW when they had passed through Am-phip’-o-lis and Ap-ol-lo’-ni-a, they came to Thes-sa-lo-ni’-ca, where was a synagogue of the Jews: 2. And Paul, as his mannerwas, went in unto them, and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, 3. Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Je’-sus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. I LOVE YOU JESUS !!!! I EXALT YOU !!!! I PRAISE YOU !!!!
