Acts 22

1 Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.

2 (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)

3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

4 And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

5 As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

6 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

7 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

10 And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

13 Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;

18 And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.

19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

20 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.

21 And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.

22 And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,

24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.

25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.

27 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

30 On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.

  1. 28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

    “But I was born free”
America is the land of the free, yet noting is truly free, there was a price made somewhere down the line.
I believe Paul was not only talking about the natural birth but hinting at his spiritual birth.

  2. Verses 19-21 MSG made me think about how we too sometimes try to argue with God’s plan as Paul did. Some things are just beyond our comprehension and we tend to argue or question when we don’t understand. This is why we have to get “personally acquainted with God” as the end of verse 16 MSG says. We have to trust in the Lord and let Him lead us, instead of trying to do our own thing or try to figure it out on our own. Proverbs 3:5-12 MSG says:

    “Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
    Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track.
Don’t assume that you know it all.
Run to God! Run from evil!
Your body will glow with health,
your very bones will vibrate with life!
    Honor God with everything you own;
give him the first and the best.
    Your barns will burst,
your wine vats will brim over.
    But don’t, dear friend, resent God’s discipline;
don’t sulk under his loving correction.
    It’s the child he loves that God corrects;
a father’s delight is behind all this.”

  3. When asking:
I thank the Lord that He answers my prayers. He is a good and loving God. When I’m in distress he’s in the fire with me…as with you too. Thankyou Lord for waking mr up today. And letting me see your glory alive in my life. Thankyou for the many blessings you, dear JESUS.
Well don’t have much else to say except that I love Jesus. Thankyou.

  4. 19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

Paul was at the martyr of Stephen consenting unto his death, and God gave him forgiveness when he asked. I have heard people say I have been to bad for God to forgive me, no one can be too bad God will forgive. We must repent and be willing to give up our past. Most people are not willing to give up their past, move on and become a new creature. This is all up to us, can we move on and let God work a miracle in us like he did Paul.

  5. 12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

Could it be the same Ananias that lied about the sale of his land? Here Ananias is introduced as a devout man. In chapter 9 Ananias is introduced as a disciple. He must have had a relationship with the Lord to be called a disciple. However, there was doubt in his heart. In chapter 9 he questioned the Lord; “Master, you can’t be serious.” 9:13 MSG. God responded; “Don’t argue. Go!” 9:15 MSG.

Have we argued with God? I have. I have felt on occasion the Lord urging me to say or do something. I question, Are you sure? How many blessings have we missed through doubt? What if Ananias had not gone to Paul? Maybe there was another that would have but what if?

  6. MORE TESTIMONY

1 Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.

The apostle teaches us the power of sharing our testimony. A testimony is a statement about or in regards to something, restating the fact of something, a Rehersing the account of something. As we tell others of the LOVE of JESUS and the power of HIS WORD we are also empowered by our own testimony. Nobody can share the good news of what has happened to us like we can.

Our defense and our offense are both in the words of our testimony. We are empowered by the testimony of what JESUS has done for each of us personally.

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

MORE TESTIMONY – when was the last time you shared your testimony about the LOVE of JESUS in your life?

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iTestify
    iWork
    iGIve
    iReap

  7. iLove to eat more Word

25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemn

It pays not to be ignorant! Paul knows his rights as a citizen of the great Roman Empire and here he clearly exercises those rights. It’s ok to suffer for Jesus, however according to this passage of scripture it is also ok to use some wisdom!

  8. 15 For you are to be his witness, telling everyone what you have seen and heard.

We call become a living witness once we accept Christ as our Savior. We are to be ready and giver our personal testimony when someone ask us about God. We cant keep our testimony to our selves. When we were carnal and living for the world, we we witnesses for Satan and had no problem talking about it to others. Now its our duty as Christians to talk about our Lord and Savior!

  9. 22 And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

Racism is a very old concept. The Jews were so against the Gentiles the felt that Saul should be killed for extending Gods love and salvation towards them. It’s not our job to decide who can be saved. God doesn’t just love the jew or the Christian, the black or the white. He loves all his creation. The atheist, agnostic, pagan, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, and so on. Our job is to extend Gods love to everyone we meet.

  10. We all have a testimony! If you say oh well I haven’t done anything wrong, then there you go, you just lied haha. None of us are perfect! But at the same time if you recognize your “small” sins (i.e. Lying, disobedience, etc. for lack of better explanation I’m saying “small” because a sin is a sin, no shades of grey) and praise God maybe you were one who was raised in church and never experimented with the world’s “big” sins. I say that’s the best testimony there is! To be able to say to the devil, “Ha! I may not be perfect and yes I’ve messed up but I resisted all the temptations put before me. Jesus Christ is the solid rock I have always stuck to.” Hallelujah!

Regardless of what we’ve all done, regardless of how “bad” the sins are your testimony holds, we must all come to terms with what we’ve done. Recognize the past is the past and move forward with Christ so we may some day like Paul share our testimony. You never know when someone is going through the same thing or maybe nothing in comparison to what you did, but when they hear your testimony they will see how great God is and be saved through the testimony God has blessed you with.

  11. 16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

    What are you waiting for?

Arise! I have been on a journey with God on this word. Its amazing how he says to the sinner arise yet throughout scripture He also says to the “saint” arise. This lets us know that if we are not carfull we will find ourselves asleep if we do not stay active in Him.

  12. Acts 22:21-22
21, And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
22, And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

Paul was sharing his testimony and the audience was listineing until he spoke “this word,” Gentiles. Once he said the word “Gentiles”, the audience was no longer listening but became angry.

This made me think of my late-former mother-in-law, Denise Martin. She was a Jew, but when she became a Holy Ghost filled, Godly, Christian woman, her family disowned her. They wouldn’t speak or associate with her for many, many, many, many years.

It’s sad to think that some people believe that not everyone can be saved. For God’s word tells us in 1 John 2:2, “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our’s only, but also for the sins of the whole world,” and 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slack concerining his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

Anyone can be saved. God doesn’t want anyone to perish. We need to share our Testimony and let others know that Jesus died for their sins, and He wants them to repent and be saved.

  13. The beauty of a changed life ….. Paul is given yet another opportunity to share his story of where the Lord has brought him from, and the difference Jesus made in his life. From murderer to disciple I’m sure was not an easy road, but he was able to overcome his past and move on to his future. Too many times, we are not able to overcome our past, but dwell there, and it causes us to not be able to become all we could be in Jesus Christ. Paul was changed, and it was only by living his testimony, living his example that people was going to see that difference, because in their minds that knew him as the old Paul. When Jesus comes into our lives, it is so important that we live what we say we are, and live it all day, every day, everywhere. We never know who is watching that is waiting to see if it is a life that is real and genuine.

  14. 27 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

A foreigner in your our land.

As we see Paul, a roman, is becoming a foreigner in his own land. As we are getting closer and closer to the end. We are seeing the same thing. America is turning away from its biblical principles. And as Holy Ghost filled Christians we are beginning to see and feel the effects. But as Paul we must stand our ground and stay strong. The lord will give us the strength to move forward. God is in control.

  15. ohh JESUS help us.

And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me. And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee: And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him. And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. (‭Acts‬ ‭22‬:‭18-21‬ KJV)

  16. Testimony everyone has one….we are overcomers by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony. Everyday we need to share our testimony with someone there are tons of souls dying and going to a devils hell.
If this gospel be hid it is hid to those that are lost.
We need to get out of our comfort zones. Dont let fear of rejection stop you, your a child of the King of Kings. Jesus will give you the words to speak. And if your giving your testimony, you will win some souls for Jesus.
Its not about us anyway, its all about Jesus.

  17. Persecutest !!!!! 6. And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Da- mas’-cus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. Acts 9 : 3 7. And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutes thou me? 8. And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Je’-sus of Naz’-areth, whom thou persecutes. 9. And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. Without you Jesus I am nothing Without you jesus I would not exist That’s why I Praise you !!!!

  18. 15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

What will your witness be? Will it help people and bring them to God to help save them? Or will it be a foolish witness that will turn people away? In Proverbs it says a true witness will deliver souls where a false witness only brings lies. Let us be a true witness to people

  19. Ananias was a devout man according to the law, and had good report with all the Jews.
God used a man who, later when Paul would be sharing his testimony, would strengthen the belief of the people. He was a man of character and integrity, so when Paul tells of the seemingly unbelievable story of his deliverance, Ananias’ accountability in the situation made it more concrete.

  20. 10 “‘What shall I do, Lord?’ I asked.
“ ‘Get up,’ the Lord said, ‘and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.’

“Get up” The Lord said. If you want to see The Lord move you, we must arise and listen and obey to God. First we must make the effort of arising and if you decide not to then we just missed out on the blessing that The Lord has for us. Awaken me Jesus!! I will ARISE and follow you Jesus!!!

  21. All things will told to you of what to do! Sometimes all we need is some personal instructions……..

10 And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

    “Be informed”……………..

  22. 21 And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. 22 And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

They listened until, he said he was sent unto the Gentiles. If Paul (man of God) had not obeyed then only the Jews would have heard (ALL that are not Jews, are Gentiles). One should thank God (Jesus) for a man of God that will heed God’s voice over the world. Dear God, bless the man of God, his family, and the path that you gave him; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. “One nation under God”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  23. Act 22:12 — Act 22:16
“And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there,
came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that very hour I received my sight and saw him.
    And he said, The God of our fathers appointed you to know his will, to see the Righteous One and to hear a voice from his mouth;
for you will be a witness for him to everyone of what you have seen and heard.
And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’

We at one point found ourselves blind not knowing right from wrong lost in a world of sin. Not going anywhere, not doing anything productive, but thanks to His Love and His mercy that He delivered us from that blindness and shared His Word with us. Know we have a purpose and a calling to share His Word. Thank you JESUS!

  24. 18 And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.

When God sets something up, it doesn’t matter what the past spells out. HE will get the glory!

  25. 25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.

27 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

Paul had certain rights because of his citizenship. We must pray for America so we can still have our rights regarding our beliefs and evangelism.

  26. Acts 22:26 (NLT)
26 When the officer heard this, he went to the commander and asked, “What are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen!”

I grew up listening to the old time Pentecostal songs. One of them says “this world is not my home, I’m just passing through.”

    Philippians 3:20 (NLT)
20 But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.

We are not of this world. When we are around people they should recognize our citizenship is elsewhere. We are aliens living in this country and we have the power of the realm we represent behind us.

Paul said he was a Roman citizen and they recognized he was bound by a different law. May this world recognize our citizenship as we represent heaven on earth.

  27. The crowd listened until Paul said that word. Then they all began to shout, “Away with such a fellow! He isn’t fit to live!” They yelled, threw off their coats, and tossed handfuls of dust into the air. (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭22‬:‭22-23‬ NLT)

Your testimony will not always be recieve day welcoming ears. Some people will find truth to be a lie because they have been deceived for so long. Keep preaching truth and testifying about all the good the lord has done. I’d rather hear the phrase “well done” than “why did you care more about what they thought than what I thought”…

  28. v16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Since we cannot improve GODS WORD, we should read it, believe it, accept it , and obey it.
We understand that JESUS IS THE NAME OF THE FATHER THE NAME OF THE SON, AND THE NAMR OF THE HOLY GHOST.

  29. (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,) (‭Acts‬ ‭22‬:‭2‬ KJV)

Speaking to someone in their native language is important. It allows them to listen and receive the message better that way than through broken words. This is why tongues is such an important part of being a believer. Speaking to Jesus in tongues might be someone else’s language that they hear and it draws them to Christ through the Spirit.

  30. 30 On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.

Paul’s past want easily forgotten in Jerusalem. He was arrested and judged and then was let go because he was legitimate Roman citizen. God chose him and he will have his back because he has the power to set him free.

  31. When they heard him speaking in their own language, the silence was even greater. (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭22‬:‭2‬ NLT)

Brethren and fathers, hear Paul speak about his great defense before the Jews also the same way Stephen did. They kept all the more silent once that the wild crowd heard Paul’s address them in Hebrew (Aramaic), for they became quiet and ready listen !!! In Jesus Name Amen!!!!

  32. 1 Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.

2 (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)

When Paul gave his testimony, he had the complete attention of his accusers. We may be accused when we stand up for this truth, and if we will share our testimony, God will use it to draw others to him. When testifying, we must allow the Lord to operate in us so that we minister the words that will help someone, not just vindicate ourselves.

  33. 15 You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard.

Speak to others about the miracles and testimonys you have seen or you have been through, 1 day it may change someone’s life! 🙂

What’s your story? We all have a testimony. Sometimes the best way to reach people for God is to share what he has done for you. Tell them what he brought you from who God has made you now. There is a great way to reach people by telling them your road to Damascus experience.. But the Lord!! If you haven’t done anything wrong that’s is a great story too. To God be the glory.

  35. Paul has only been in Jerusalem for a few days (vs27) and already the prophesy of the difficulties he will face (vs11) is coming true. He is seized by the crowd, and the uproar is so great and the people so inflamed that Paul must be carried away by Roman soldier for his own saftey (vs35). However, Paul is bold enough to want to stop and speak to this violent crowd. One word from Paul in their common language, Aramaic, silences the crowd. His command not only of Greek but of but also Aramaic impresses them. But Paul has more than just the language to give him credibility with the crowd. He is a student of the famous and wise teacher Gamaliel and has an impressive educational background. He uses what he has in common with these people to gain an opening for his conversion story and the truth of the gospel. In the midst of great affliction Paul boldly stands up and becomes transparent enough of his background to reach the lost. We have the same opportunity today to reach those who would otherwise be lost because we can share how we once were also.
