Acts 6

6 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

11 Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.

12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,

13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

15 And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

  1. Verse 8 AMP “Now Stephen, full of grace (divine blessing and favor) and power (strength and ability) worked great wonders and signs (miracles) among the people.” Same verse MSG “Stephen, brimming with God’s grace and energy, was doing wonderful things among the people, unmistakable signs that God was among them.” When your in the will of God, there is no question about it. Yes Lord to your will and to your way….we just have to be willing vessels. Stephen reminds me of a bible point I learned in VBS a long time ago…”God gives us the power to be brave”.

  2. 9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

The Jews did not want to admit that Jesus was the messiah sent to the world. The time had come for the power of God to move in the midst of the people. We can still have the Acts of the Apostles every week in our lives, if we turn everything over to God. We must put our trust in God!

  3. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

A verse that automatically made me mare things so differently because of what were meant to do to see the harvest. Without Prayer or the Word we will not see the harvest. We must pray without ceasing and eat the Word. If we want to see miracles and wonders, people coming to Christ, we must walk under the Holy Ghost!!! I recieve it Jesus!!! Dedication to Prayer and The Word!!!! MORE PRAYER, MORE WORD, MORE JESUS, MORE HARVEST!!! Hallelujah!!!!

  4. In verse 4 it says that we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. This is present tense, signifying to me the application is still just as important today! It is what the disciples said to the multitude. As they practiced this the word of God increased and the number of disciples increased. As we study the word and hide it in our heart we will grow in faith and authority, so when we are scoffed at and persecuted the same will happen as in verse 10 ” and they were unable to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.”

  5. “And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.”

In today’s society of instant gratification please use wisdom before ranting about social or personal issues in public forums such as Facebook, Twitter, etc… It seems every couple of weeks someone somewhere is loosing their job due to rants and raves on social media that has nothing to do with their jobs. However, due to public perception employers are bowing to the whims of public perception rather than defending their employees.

I am not saying the church must be silent during the onslaught of this perverted generation but we must choose our words and medium wisely.

  6. MORE COMMITTED TO SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES

4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

Life is filled with choices and decisions. Some make us weaker and some stronger, some thinner and some fat, some wise and some foolish, some spiritual and some carnal. Some decisions are time savers while others are time wasters, some are temporal and others eternal.

Understanding the complexity of life and a growing church, decisions must be made. A tired mind is usually a dull mind, a dull mind is vulnerable to deceit. As spiritual leaders we must be sharp minded. Allowing our mind to be continually cluttered with games, conflict, conspiracy theories, bills, debt, family conflict and the many other agendas that arise in life. We need someone in our lives that has been with JESUS to bring us to a clearer understanding of the ways of GOD; which are not always easily understood.

Support teams and staff are imperative to this process. Allowing spiritual leaders to spend time in study and prayer is a wise investment. Rather than be burdened with all of the decisions that must be made to physically operate a church, in a critical time of spiritual need we can receive a WORD from the LORD.

GOD Bless all that understand this process and allow those that have been delegated authority to assist in the care of and to the church. We must GROW his Kingdom.

  7. iLove to eat More Word

2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

What the Church needs is more good and faithful table servers. When the Apostles chose these men, it is evident that there were leadership qualifications in which they had to meet.

The qualifications are found in verse :3
    *honest report
    *full of the Holy Ghost
    *wisdom

These men had to qualify just to serve tables, but don’t get me wrong, these are no ordinary waiters. They remove unnecessary burdens from the Apostles by serving the Leadership so that they can have time in study of the Word of God.

God granted these table servers great power, signs, and wonders. 8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

I am a table server at The Pentecostals of Fort Worth, and just as the First Church of Jerusalem’s table servers received great power to assist their leaders, I too receive that same anointing. I wonder who would like to serve tables with me? God leaves great tips😃💰

  8. Gentiles with the Holy Spirit

3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch

Nicolas is a proselyte, which is a Gentile convert to Judaism. He was selected to be one of the seven, so he must have been full of the Spirit. I was always taught that Acts 10 was the first outpouring of the Spirit for the Gentiles. This text seems to suggest otherwise.

It gives me reason to believe that many of the proselytes (and possible the God-fearers, Gentile’s who sacrificed to Jehovah but did not fully abide by the law of Moses, whereas proselyte would abide by the law of Moses-even in circumcision) probably received the Holy Spirit prior to the event recorded in Acts 10. If this is true, perhaps the Jews figured that the Holy Spirit was for those who accepted Judaism prior to the Acts 10 revelation.

I also thought that the Nicolas in verse 5 was the same one mentioned in Revelation. The timeline seems highly unlikely. There is at least a 50 years difference between these two events, which makes it more likely that it was another man with a similar name rather then the same man.

  9. 10 None of them could stand against the wisdom and the Spirit with which Stephen spoke. (NLT)

Just speak the truth and don’t worry about what others say. Lies and rumors rose against Stephen and just the same does this happen today, but we know the truth and that’s all that matters. As long as we speak truth, God will always be there for us.

  10. A man chosen.

5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

And Stephen , a man full of faith and if the Holy Ghost…. This is the type of men we need in our church. Let’s no only imagine and dream of what The Lord can do, let’s activate our faith, and be filled with the Holy Ghost and watch what The Lord can and will do at POFW!

  11. Acts 6:6-7
Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

It was after delegating to submissive men who followed God that the apostles were free to focus on their part of the ministry and revival happened! Insomuch that priests began to believe. The key here is not position but the filling of Gods spirit of those individuals given the position and their willingness to serve. Revival will happen, we just need to be filled with His spirit and be willing to serve where we are.

  12. 10 But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.

You can’t go against the men of God for God is with them and nothing can come against them! God has given them his anointing and that is more powerful than any lie or trick someone puts against them. For only the anointing can come onto you is when you respect your man of God. Your lie you thing you got away with will come back because God protects his anointed! 🙂

  13. 11 So they persuaded some men to lie about Stephen, saying, “We heard him blaspheme Moses, and even God.” 12 This roused the people, the elders, and the teachers of religious law. So they arrested Stephen and brought him before the high council.

  14. Acts 6:5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas from Antioch a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid their hands on them.

  15. Acts 6:1-7
The first few verses of this chapter teaches us, as the children of God, that if we will be faithful and take on responsibility of other ministries in the church, this will allow Pastor and the other ministers to have time to spend in prayer and teaching of the word.
And WOW, What God will do! The word of God will increase, and the number of the disciples will multiply in Fort Worth greatly.

So help “lighten the load” by being MORE Faithful and MORE Responsible in your ministry.

  16. Acts 6:8
And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.

When you have the attitude of a servant, pray, and read his word God’s Spirit takes care of the rest. You don’t need a pulpit or A crowd just be a servant and let the Lord use you.

  17. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

    Is your report honest?

To be found worth, to take care of people. This is a job for many, yet few are willing to sacrifice the time to do it. God has called all of us to labors for him. Answer the call.

  18. 9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

We mustn’t go against the man of God! God has placed them in our life for a reason. We must respect them, for they are anointed men of God. And God will protect his anointed!!

  19. In the account of the lying witnesses (vs 3-14) their are two words that stand out “law” and “customs”. The religious leaders show that they are not interested in an Almighty God but want to put God in a box. It sounds like they are looking at what they can control. The thought of salvation through Christ Jesus sounds so outrageous that they count it as blasphemy. Jesus said “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.” (Matt 5:17). Declaring the God’s Word will irritate the souls content with blindness. What good is it to have eyes when the mind is blind? When the light of Stephen’s face shown like than of an agel they only grew more violent. Some people will not enjoy when you let your light shine for Jesus. Stephen shows us It’s okay, Shine on! (Matt 5:16)

  20. 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

We should not underestimate small beginnings. What ever ministry wether small of big is ministry. We see how these men were chosen and their qualifications are quite good. We should know that our daily desicions will affect. We are chosen because of our choices. And when we are, we will have to prove ourselves faithful in the small. Every opportunity is a great way to do something in the Kingdom of God and honor him.

  21. Acts 6:12 (KJV Strong’s)
12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,

    1 Peter 3:15-17 (KJV Strong’s)
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. 17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

The enemy wants to accuse us and does so through people. So how do you combat it? Easy. Live a holy life of obedience towards God.

Our character, and integrity isn’t for right now. We choose to do what’s right not because of what happens now but because of our relationship with God.

Everyday we live our lives righteously not giving place to the devil so that when people accuse they don’t have a leg to stand on unless they lie.

  22. 6 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

I was told as a child don’t complain about something not being done if you are unwilling to do it.

  23. And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

Delegation of work is imperative! God has given us different skill sets for His glory and delegation in a ministry allows for opportunities for God to be glorified!!

  24. 8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

God was able to use Stephen in His kingdom because he was willing to serve.

  25. As a Christian, people will see you differently. They will judge you just because of how you look. This is the time for the people of God to stand tall and abide by his word even the more so.

  26. “And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council”. They were told many things with the primary intent of persuading them or convincing them of lies. The deceiver (satan) and his servants still are doing the same today, as such the urgency and need for the Holy Ghost (Jesus) should be self-explanatory. Dear God, I need more of you and less of self, to help avoid deception; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  27. 10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

This is what speaking with boldness is, which can only be done with the Holy Spirit. I could imagine his accusers getting upset being stumped by a man full of the Holy Ghost. It reminds of when trinitarians try to argue with Oneness Theologians. There is no contest, our boldness stumps lies straight from the pits of hell.

  28. “The Word of God prospered. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased dramatically. Not least, a great many priests submitted themselves to the faith.”
    Acts 6:7 MSG

We could never get too much of Gods Word in our lives. And as the Word increases more disciples birthed.

  29. “So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.””
    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭6:2-4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Delegation is an important asset in ministry, especially as it grows. It’s creates a better foundation for team building, learning to facilitate communication with others and building character. By delegating we are unified.

  30. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word
Praying and continually in the word . Jesus is there.

  31. 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Having opportunities for others to minister allowed the apostles to keep focused on the word and prayer and verse 7 is the result. Each person who ministers at POFW is allowing our Pastor to keep focused on prayer and the word!

  32. Several times in this chapter we hear “the number of the disciples mutiplied.” We must make more effort to mutiply disciples and not the crowd. We mutiplied the crowd by failing to teach, lead, and pray for the people until Christ is formed within them. This is a process that takes time and effort.

As divides of God if we mutiplied ourselves we multiply His Kingdom. We must first as the question are we living a life that is worthy to be mutiplied?

  33. 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

Serving for God’s kingdom is great work and privilege for us to do, when we help to spread the word, we make more disciples and when we make more disciples, more people get to hear the word of God. And we do this by continually being in prayer.

  34. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

When I consider giving of myself I think of making a commitment. Like mentioned here in prayer and ministry. We sign a covenant and we commit ourselves to come to church for prayer. We commit ourselves to pray every day and blog every day, sometimes the responsiblities of this life get in the way like they do for the disciples. When in prayer, we are not just praying only for ourselves we are praying for others. This will increase our ministry.

  35. “And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭6:15‬ ‭KJV‬‬

He spent so much time in the presence and glory of God that his face shone. All too often it seems today that people don’t necessarily want to spend the time to shine. Our world needs more people who shine with the light that Stephen shone with.

  36. Stephen !!!! 13. And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: 14. For we have heard him say, that this Je’-sus of Naz’-a-reth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Mo’-ses delivered us. 15. And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel. I LOVE YOU JESUS !!!!
