Acts 11

1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,

3 Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.

4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,

5 I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:

6 Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

7 And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.

8 But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.

9 But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

10 And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.

11 And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me.

12 And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house:

13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;

14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.

20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.

21 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.

22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.

23 Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.

24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.

25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:

26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

27 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.

28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:

30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

  1. Immediately great news for us with the very first verse of this chapter. Without this development we might have missed our chance to be saved…..

1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

“Stand”,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,”Receive Jesus Christ”…..the Word of God.

  2. 18. When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

There’s nothing like a personal, first-hand, eye-witness account of an event to dispel doubt.
I’ve been told that the Holy Ghost and speaking in tongues was only for those back in the “Bible days”…but when I told them that I have the Holy Ghost and speak in tongues myself, their thought no longer had a leg to stand on.

  3. Can you imagine if God decided to be selfish and kept his salvation to only the Jews? What would had happen to us? We would never have a chance of salvation.
Thankful he decided to spread it to the Gentiles the Americans and the crazy Mexicans.

  4. The First Church of Antioch

26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

27 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.

The joy of being able to trace our church all the way to the First Church of Antioch, our church as gentiles, as Hispanics, as anything. We are now identified by one Name, applied at Baptism, and with the gift of the Holy Ghost. CHRISTIANS, BELONGING AND BEING LIKE CHRIST. OUR FIRST CHURCH CALLED CHRISTIANS FIRST OF IN ANTIOCH. Thank you Jesus for your allowing your grace to extend to us the gentiles, for making us clean; although they called us uncleaned. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME.

  5. Acts 11:18 (NLT)
18 When the others heard this, they stopped objecting and began praising God. They said, “We can see that God has also given the Gentiles the privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life.”

The Jewish people lived with the knowledge that all dogs go to hell. To them gentiles were considered dogs. They were the lowest of the low, a barbaric people separated from God.

The laws purpose to keep them separated was misinterpreted and the Jewish people became prejudiced. They practiced segregation, and wouldn’t even eat with one.

However Jesus healed a Roman’s Servant, and would have went to his house. Jesus spoke with a Samaritan woman who was half Jew and gentile.

This scripture challenges me. As children of God we need to look past our separation and see the soul destined for flames. No we are not allowed to participate in the sins they do but everyone we meet is a potential rescue.

  6. 18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

The Gentiles received the Holy Ghost as well as the Jews. This great Holy Ghost is given to anyone who will repent of their sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ! We need a Holy Ghost revival in our day to add to the Acts of this day as God wants to give.

  7. iLove to eat More Word

12 And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house:

Sometimes you just have to trust leadership. The six men had probably never eaten with Gentiles before. Notice in verse three, that there was total amazement that Jewish people would eat with Gentiles. With that being said, it took a lot of faith for the six man to follow their leader. Sometimes PASTOR is going to ask us to do something that goes beyond our comfort zone. Just like the six men that follow Peter, we should follow and ask questions later.

  8. Gentile of Jew

1-3 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.

Paul must not have written to the letter to the Ephesians yet…
Ephesians 2:11-13 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

I never want to forget where God brought me from. I never want to look at someone and think why are they here and what do think God will do for them.

1 Timothy 2:-4 1I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

  9. Acts 11:28-30
28, And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughtout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.
29, Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined (having a made up mind, decided) to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea.
30, Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Verse 29 is a good verse on Giving.
We know that these men were “true disciples” of the Lord because they saw a need, and they had a “made up mind” that they were going to give, they were going to help. They not only gave according to their ability of their resources, but I believe they gave according to their ability of their faith, trusting that their gift to God’s work and His people was a worthy investment in His kingdom.
Another thing that stood out in this scripture was their determination to give. They had already “made up in their minds” to help send relief to their other brothers in the Lord. If a person isn’t determined (having a made up mind, decided) to give, then he probably won’t give.

So what we need is a Made Up Mind to Give MORE to the Work of the Kingdom of God. MORE GIVING!

  10. MORE REVIVAL

21 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.

The LORD was with them. What a biblical theme. It seems that every time we read these words something good results. The hand of the LORD was with them because they were preaching JESUS. May our words and our actions match to confirm the message of JESUS among us.

LORD JESUS be with us today as we seek your face, I pray that others would see you as the result of our seeking you. I pray for the harvest and that souls are added to your Kingdom today in JESUS name.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  11. When questioned why we the circumcised went to Joppa to an uncircumcised man’s home and enter there, and eat with them, Peter was able to give explanation because he had been obedient to the voice of the Lord that sent him.

Can we give an account for our actions? Are we acting on our behalf of because we are sensitive to the Spirit of the Lord? Evaluation of the whys we do what we do and why we say what we say sometimes could be beneficial on our part. Maybe we do something out of tradition but don’t know why we do it? Maybe we don’t do something because our parents didn’t do it, but God is asking us to do it anyway?
This is why our personal relationship with the Lord is so important. Because of Peter’s obedience to the voice of the Lord an entire family was brought salvation.

Lord I am listening ……speak to me!

  12. I’ve always heard, “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” To me this fits right along with this story. Peter didn’t question God, he didn’t say, “but God look at them, they’re Gentiles!” We too must never judge an individual by their “cover.” You never know what someone has been through or what kind of major incident just occurred in their life. Think about your first visit to church, and how you felt. We must be sensitive to the Spirit and obey Gods call when He says.

  13. Acts 11:23When he arrived and saw the grace of God had done he was gald and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man full of the Holy Spirit and faith and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

  14. 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

God clearly orchestrated the Gentiles receiving the word of their salvation, then poured it out upon them! Paul had 6 men to witness it all with him. The Jews could see the hand of God and rejoiced. Today, we must be careful to not judge who God brings to the church to receive the word and salvation. The church is for all: great and small, rich and poor. We must love them all and be willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with them!

  15. By which you will be saved

14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

Verse 14 in Greek is: hos lalesei heremata pros se en hois sothese
who will speak words to you by which you will be saved

(Swthese is in the Strongs Dictionary as Sozo #G4982. It means to save or deliver; to cause someone to experience divine salvation)

Peter retells the story to defend why he broke customs. Cornelius, a religious, tithe-paying God fearer, had an experience with God that led to this event. The question we must ask ourselves is, “Was Cornelius saved prior to receiving the Holy Spirit?” There is not a 100% consensus with an answer. Some say no; some say yes.

The evidence available to us strongly suggests that Cornelius was “saved” (for illustrated purposes, the Paul believed salvation was a process that could only be completed in eternity) after Peter came to him. “By which you shall be saved” is the key term in this text. As Peter preached, the whole house received the Holy Spirit just as the apostles did on the day of Pentecost. This appears to be the experience the angle of the Lord was speaking. Some argue that this was a one time event to break the religious prejudices and show that the Gentiles were able to receive the Holy Spirit just like the Jews. This argument seems inadequate based on the fact that Nicolas (Acts 6) was a proselyte, a Gentile convert to Judaism who was filled with the Holy Spirit, and from Acts 10:14. This is one of the many points that supports the Pentecostal belief that the book of Acts is normative (what is expected to happen normally within the church, as opposed to events for the 1st century only, which some believe).

  16. Acts 11:14
Who shall tell thee words whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

We must be careful what we say and do so we can enter into heaven with Jesus and live with him forever and ever More Jesus. Amen

  17. 18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Praise God we can be black, white, brown, yellow, pink, male, female, young, old, educated, illiterate…its for everyone! No boundaries! The gift of salvation is for each and every one of us!

  18. 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

And the promise was unto them, and their children, and to all who were afar off. Thank you Jesus

  19. 29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:

I’m glad to be part of a church that truly acts out the apostolic duties and doctrine. We are also a giving church. Whenever the need arises the church, the people of God, respond to-like it says here- give according to people’s ability. This is truly showing the love of God. Let’s keep acting apostolic in all areas and we will see the book of acts revival.

  20. 23When he arrived and saw this evidence of God’s blessing, he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord.

To stay true to the Lord, we must hear the truth be spoken, just as Pastor preached. We believe what we hear but we must also search for the truth. Our daily reading of the word provides us the evidence of the truth.

  21. 18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.”

It doesn’t matter who you are, what you look like or what you did God will always forgive you and love you. Just because you may have done something in the pass doesn’t mean you can’t be forgiven and change your ways of living. Thank you Jesus that you will always be there with open arms to forgive are sins and you will always be there to pick us up when we fall. 🙂

  22. It’s not about what others think you should do. It’s about what God wants you to do. We will not be able to please everybody as there are too many different opinions floating around. However, we can please God by doing what his word instructs us to do. It’s alot easier to please one than to try to please many.

  23. When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Thank you Jesus for repentance for the Gentiles. We’re would we be if not for his grace to all flesh.

  24. 18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

    Repentance unto life……
Daily repentance because if we don’t live a repentive life we will not be able to live life abundantly. All it takes is one area of you life where a small seed of doubt, bitterness, arrogancy, unforgiveness ect…gets in and it could take 40 yrs before you realize what’s grown up in your heart. God help us.
Thank you Jesus for your grace and mercy.

  25. Acts 11:1-18

Jesus must have been serious when he told the church to go to Gentiles! Perter reported to his peers how God had led him to a whole new audience. By the time they heard the story, they glorify God for the new ministry. They remained teachable.
THE MOMENT WE STOP LEARNING, WE STOP LEADING!!!

  26. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.

We will know when we are ministering with expectation when we grow great in number those who turn to the Lord. Growth creates a need for more to help minister. The fields are ripe for harvest but the workers are few. Lord give us a burden for souls.

  27. 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

  28. 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

Hallelujah!!! One thing that I had never seen before coming to POFW was children beig filled with the HG. It’s beautiful to see children cry out to God and for God to fill them with His power! I see people leaving their dead churches because they just want MORE!!! No better place than being in the presence of God 🙂 Thank You Jesus for dying for me at the cross!!!

  29. 12 And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house:

when the Spirit tells us to do something, we should obey. We will know hat it is the Holy Ghost by continuing a daily walk and communion with Jesus.

  30. One heard a voice the other saw an angel yet each play a vital role in the saving of many. How God gets our attention is less important than if we obey what He is leading us to do.

  31. 1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

The circumstances surrounding Cornelius and his household being saved stretched the faith of the disciples. The move of God crossed social and religious boundaries. Salvation of the Gentiles was prophesied in Isaiah

    Isaiah 49:6
And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant
to raise up the tribes of Jacob,
and to restore the preserved of Israel:
I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles,
that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

Even with the prophesy the believers were not open to the new thing God did.
    Isaiah 43:19
    Behold, I will do a new thing;
now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?
I will even make a way in the wilderness,
    and rivers in the desert.

The end time revival will be a new thing. A revival like none has ever seen! God will do the work. It will stretch our faith to see it happen but it has been written, let it be so!

  32. “Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.” The word of God (Jesus) was remembered, as it did happen, just like it was said it would. The word of God shall happen, which is all the more why one should read the word of God, listen to the man of God, and assemble so one can hear and remember. Dear God, help me too truly hear; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  33. “Those who had been scattered by the persecution triggered by Stephen’s death traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, but they were still only speaking and dealing with their fellow Jews. Then some of the men from Cyprus and Cyrene who had come to Antioch started talking to Greeks, giving them the Message of the Master Jesus. God was pleased with what they were doing and put his stamp of approval on it—quite a number of the Greeks believed and turned to the Master.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭11:19-21‬ ‭MSG‬‬

I like how the end of this Section stated that God “put his stamp
Of approval on it”. I want everything I do to have His stamp of approval on it. Let’s be aware that every action we make is being overlooked by God. Let’s be like Christ in everything we do in life.

  34. 17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.

20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.
Im so grateful to be given the precious gift of the holy ghost. Thank you lord for allowing us gentiles to receive salvation.

  35. “So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?””(Acts‬ ‭11:17‬ ‭NIV‬‬)

We would be nowhere without God opening the door to us Gentiles. He has accepted us as his heirs by pouring out His Spirit upon Cornelius after he was baptized. They are agreeing that they should accept who the Lord accepts. No one can stand in the Lord’s way when he makes a decision. When new guest in the church we should be accepting them for we have been accepted.

  36. 1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.
2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,

I can only imagine how confused and upset the Jews felt when they heard what Peter had done. After all of the work they had been doing, how could he go in the company of the common? These people are unclean, Peter! How could you?!

You think you can see to the end. You think you can see what God’s plan is. Even with His omniscient, omnipotent self, you think you can predict what the Lord is going to do in a situation…..but He ALWAYS surprises us, doesn’t He?
For the promises is unto you, and your children, and to all that are far off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. For this I am eternally grateful and owe my life to you, my King!

  37. Act 11:2 — Act 11:3
So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying,
“You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.”

We always have an opportunity to be obedient and show God’s love. Sometimes we can be to quick to judge as we see people on the outside, the way they look, dressed, act, or even speak. Just because they don’t look, behave, speak, or are even in the same level ( spiritually), doesn’t mean that we should not speak, or socialize with them. We must remember that the Gospel is for all. Don’t loose out on a blessing masterclass they don’t lol like us.

  38.  There’s power in our testimony. We just have to share it
“And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God’s way?” When the others heard this, they stopped objecting and began praising God. They said, “We can see that God has also given the Gentiles the privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life.””

    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭11:17-18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    http://bible.com/116/act.11.17-18.nlt

  39. 26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

It’s funny to see that people claim to have there roots in the first church, the bible is very clear in saying that the first people to be called Christians were apostolic.

With this reference its is very clear to me that if you claim to be a Christian you can only do so if your apostolic.

A simple thought but if you want to be a true Christian your need to go back to the origins, the apostolic faith.

  40. Antioch

26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

Antioch was something of an accidental evangelistic outreach point. Persecution drove the church there among other places, yet it was there that the church grew and thrived such that the believers were first called Christians (CHRIST-like) there at Antioch. Persecution is not meant to be an end of revival, instead we see examples when it distinctly became a mechanism of revival and harvest. I can only imagine the rejoicing in heaven over the victory of the church rising up and growing in spite of opposition and through the means of it. Jesus set the precedence on the cross, a place of persecution and crushing; His suffering brought about restoration and salvation for all mankind, and allowed for the birth and growth of the church.

    Romans 8:35-37
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

  41. Peter !!!! 5. I was in the city of Jop’-pa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me: 6. Unto the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beast and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 7. And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Pe’-ter: slay and eat. YOU ARE A GREAT GOD !!!! I HONOR YOU !!!!

  42. “And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭11:15-17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

What a testimony. When he gave is testimony the Holy Ghost fell on everyone.

  43. “And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.”
    ‭‭
Rhoda was remembered because she knew the voice of Peter. How much more will we be remembered if we know the voice of the Father? Think of how the chapter would have changed if she would have opened the door immediately when she head his voice. They would have immediately known their prayers were answered and that he was alive. Instead they argued, called Rhoda names, and stayed in disbelief. It never does say who opened the door, but when it was opened, they all had a great surprise. Let’s not just let our miracle stand at the door and knock. Let’s let our miracle in.
