Acts 12

1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.

2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.

7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.

14 And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.

20 And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king’s country.

21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.

  1. 12. And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

    13. And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.

    14. And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

When the answer to your prayers comes knocking, don’t be so shocked that God answered your prayers that you neglect to receive it.

  2. 7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly.

Love it when the word of God really fills you up with good as a strong meal even before the flesh is fed. Here we witness a Miracle completely based upon obedience, even Peter himself had his doubts for he believed it was just imagination or a vision, none the less he was obedience to the end. If it was his dream, he would at least escape reality through his dream. The king command a centurion of soldiers over Peter, a whole unit of soldiers dedicated to stand guard and keep Peter in jail. Let’s take it from the very top! It says that the angel “SMOTE” him on his side. The word smote past tense of smite is 1. to strike or hit hard, with or as with the hand, a stick, or other weapon. Ok, so we begin this Miracle of Obedience with pain. He awoke being in pain and now he has to obey everything he is being told. The angel instructs him into girding himself, which means Peter was somewhat unprepared “naked”. Peter is mesmerize as he passes gate, after gate, after gate until he reaches his destination, the was the outside of the prison. Discipline, obedience, submission all three of this are painful in the flesh but at the same time it brings out blessings, deliverance, and joy!!!!!!!!!! Find it in your heart to ALWAYS BE OBEDIENT TO OUR GOD AND HOLY GHOST.

  3. 19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death.

Herod was a man full of hatred toward God and the teachings of the church. He thought himself to be a god of some kind and when he would not give God the glory he was smote by God.
We should never think ourselves to be more than what we are. To God be the Glory!

  4. Acts 12:4-10
Besides the angel releasing him, the reason why Peter was released from “his prison” and “his chains fell off” was because of a continuously, effectually, fervently, and earnestly praying church.

KJV “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.”
NLT “But while Peter was in prison, the churched prayed earnestly for him.”
AMP “So Peter was kept in prison, but fervent prayer for him was persistenly made to God by the church (assembly).”

When we Pray MORE Continously, MORE Effectuallly, MORE Fervently, and MORE Earnestly for people, we too will see people being delivered from “their prison” and see “their chains fall off.”

James 5:16b says, “… The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

    MORE Prayer!!

  5. People Pleaser or God Pleaser

3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

I have used this expression many times as a parent trying to get my children to understand that in some cases you cannot be people and God pleaser. We must choose whom we will serve. I try to instruct that just because we dedicate our lives to the Lord does not exempt us from human contact and the ebb and flow of human relationships. I have learned that people come and go. The one constant in this life is the Lord. It may seem at times the Lord has forsaken us but it is only a test and the purpose of the test is to strengthen us and prepare us for the future.

  6. Acts 12:5
Peter therfore was kept in prison but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

We must stay in the church and not get into trouble and not get in prison for crazy things always pray to help the people who are in prison More prayer. AMEN

  7. MORE DOOR KNOCKING

16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

Determination is key to success. Every successful individual has passed up several good opportunities to quit, give up or turn back. The delivered apostle Peter gives us great illustration of determination. His desire to share his miracle was great than the rejection he faced.

Dont quit, don’t give up. Keep knocking, someone is bound to answer.

“Determination today leads to success tomorrow.”
“The difference between the possible and the impossible lies in a person’s determination.”

    iRepent
    IPraise
    iPray
    iWork

  8. No more handcuffs

7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

As I read this I was reminded of a testimony. Somewhere in or around Houston, there was a prisoner that wanted to be baptized in Jesus name. The prison refused to allow him to go the church, so the ministers brought in a horse trough, filled it with water, and baptized him. Both the prisoner’s hands and feet were cuffed and there was cuff that linked his cuffs together. Everything was in place, and they baptized him in Jesus name. When he came out of the water, all of his handcuffs were off. Both guards got baptized as well.

When we have an encounter with God, He sets us free from our captivity.

  9. iLove to eat More Word

Psalms 34:7 KJV The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

Is there anything too hard for God to do? We don’t always know the plan of God (why did God allow one Apostle to die and send an angel to deliver the other), but one thing we do know is that God is able. Not only that, but we win regardless. Our reward in Heaven is far greater than life here on earth. Thank You Jesus for this blessed hope in you.

  10. 5 But while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him. (NLT)

His blood still works, your prayers to God are still heard, and there is still no other name like Jesus that had such power; don’t let anyone or anything convince you otherwise!

  11. Prayer chains. 25 power hours of prayer.

Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

Prayer chains still work. When we have our monthly chains. We must know that when we chain up together, chains are broken for others. Break every chain.

  12. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

It’s how you handle your dilemma. Are you going to cry and “woe is me”? Or are you going to be like the Church of Acts. Prayer was made without ceasing!

The Lord will hear our cry, He will be our strong rock in our time of need.

Psalm 61:1-2 “Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

  13. 5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.

Prayer works! The church never stopped praying they had faith in God to
know that he with protect Peter. But when God answered there prayers they didn’t believe it. Don’t lose faith when your answer is right at the door, don’t close the door and shut the miracle out. But rejoice and thank God that he hears your prayers! Thank you God that you will always be my provider! 🙂

  14. But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place. (‭Acts‬ ‭12‬:‭17‬ KJV)

The lord can do things that we will never fully understand all we can do is stand there with awe. The lord is good to much. Lol

And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. (‭Acts‬ ‭12‬:‭22-23‬ KJV)

King Herod thought he was god. But no we are just men with mortal bodies. Give only praise to the one true living God.

  15. Acts 12:5
So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.

There is power and freedom when the church gets together in one accord to pray for our pastor and leaders. There is a supernatural covering over them that strengthens, protects, and even liberates them in what ever situation they are in or going through. MORE PRAYER!

  16. 23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

On psalms 24 it is clearly written:
“The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.”
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭24:1-2‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Why then should any man take any credit? Even the air that we breathe is His. We should be careful to always know whom deserves all credit. It is by God’s grace and mercy that we live and accomplish things in life. We are stewards of what He gives us. Remember to give God the glory. Thank you Jesus. To you be all the glory and honor.

  17. 4Then he imprisoned him, placing him under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring Peter out for public trial after the Passover.

Just like the present day, the unrighteous want the righteous to be jailed for not agreeing with there views. They like to publicly ridicule the righteous also. We the church must continue to stay encouraged and stand up for our views and not let the few out shout us.

  18. Acts of the Apostles 12:6 NLT
In this scripture we learn that Peter is not worried about tomorrow. He wasn’t afraid or worried or fretting of the fate of his life. He didn’t stay up all night with anxiety and fear. But he rested and slept with full confidence and assurance in Christ Jesus
“The night before Peter was to be placed on trial, he was asleep, fastened with two chains between two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison gate.”

    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭12:6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

  19. Acts 12:23 (Message)
23 That was the last straw. God had had enough of Herod’s arrogance and sent an angel to strike him down. Herod had given God no credit for anything. Down he went. Rotten to the core, a maggoty old man if there ever was one, he died.

Herod took credit for what God had done. He only had the position that he occupied because it was to bring to pass the will and the purposes of God.

Arrogance is a one way ticket to destruction. We must stay in an attitude of gratitude and humility for all that God has done.

  20. 6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

When I read this I saw when I used to be bound and trapped and thinking that there was no way out, Jesus came to free me. Every chain that I was bonded to Jesus broke them and because of His Spirit I am FREE now 🙂 I gave all my burdens and worries to Jesus and delivered me from the chains of sin. The devil is after us like a roaring lion, but I am MORE THAN A CONQUOER!!!! So the devil is under my feet!!! In you I trust Jesus:) Thank You Jesus!!!

  21. 21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

We must be careful to listen to the voice of God, when we don’t, even if we don’t feel it right or die on the spot, eventually God take care of those who don’t obey his word.

  22. God is definitely worthy of all praise. To ignore the one who is truly deserving of it can lead to death. Our hearts and minds should continually be turned towards God always. It is because of Jesus that we have the ability to even stand. Lets not forget where our help comes from.

  23. 10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

In our darkest hour our prayers are so focused on the situation and praying for deliverance, that when it occurs so fast, our heads are reeling & spinning-so to speak. Peter had to stop, take it all in, then go rejoicing! Pray and believe-God is able to do exceeding abundantly MORE than we can ask or think. Are we praying BIG enough? God has so much for POFW! Get ready to receive it! Financial blessings are waiting too.

  24. 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also.

Herod was a people pleaser, do what was right in the eyes of people for position and prestige, however the people of God appealed to a higher court, through prayer and Peter was delivered by angels from that prison cell.

It doesn’t matter if we are in situations that seem to please others, if we will appeal to the higher court – the Lord Jesus Christ, He will send deliverance.

  25. And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
Again we see a example in the word of God of Him breaking the chains of bondage and delivering Peter out of trouble. Just as Jesus did for Paul and Peter He can do the same thing for you! God is a chain breaker!

  26. “When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.” The gate was opened for him, and he was led out by the angel. Door’s (gate’s) can be opened and the path shown, if one is willing to heed God (Jesus) and the man of God. Dear God, let me observant of the gate; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  27. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

The church may experience problems of finance, or problems created by the lack of love and unity but these are all secondary and almost superficial; they only touch the surface of the situation. The real problem is the prayer life of the Church, and if that is solved every other problem at once finds solution. All of our difficulties would melt away a prayer life would become vital, powerful and revived. Prayer is the very life of the Church.

  28. 21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

Herod didn’t lift himself up, but he allowed others to exalt him. Giving honor where honor is due is one thing but taking credit for something we did nothing for is crossing the line. Especially if we are taking the credit from God.

  29. 3When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.

Herod was a people pleaser plain and simple. When he accepted the praise that belonged to God he was exceuted by an angel of the Lord. When we accept the praises that belong to God, and praise ourselves we put ourselves in the same position of Herod. I don’t ever want to take your praise.

  30. You know it when God has his hand upon your life, it comes with perks. You are his child and we are loaded with benefits. God can dispatch many Angels or just one to rescue or deliver you. His plan in your life isn’t over until he says it’s over….

11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

    “Pray for rescue when needed”………………

  31. “That was the last straw. God had had enough of Herod’s arrogance and sent an angel to strike him down. Herod had given God no credit for anything. Down he went. Rotten to the core, a maggoty old man if there ever was one, he died.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭12:23‬ ‭MSG‬‬

This is an example of how fed up God can get about people who know better and yet choose to do whatever they can to gain the attention for themselves. God is a jealous God. We should be careful about how we act and whom/what we worship because there will be a point where we are judged for it all.

  32. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

The church prayed for Peter in intercession and not in public assembly, for it was not safe to meet as a church because of such heavy persecution like the death of James. They would meet in little groups and in private houses, one of which was Mary’s (Ac 12:12). You cannot stop the power of prayer and the persecution by Herod does nothing but encourage the church to multiply.

  33. Peter was found between a rock and a hard place. He was in quite a desolate situation, bound with chains and surrounded by soldiers. Thanks to the power of prayer and unwavering faith, his situation dissolved before him and he was led back to God’s work.
It doesn’t matter how scary or impossible a situation may seem, it is nothing for God to deliver you out of.

  34. “And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.”
    ‭‭
Rhoda was remembered because she knew the voice of Peter. How much more will we be remembered if we know the voice of the Father? Think of how the chapter would have changed if she would have opened the door immediately when she head his voice. They would have immediately known their prayers were answered and that he was alive. Instead they argued, called Rhoda names, and stayed in disbelief. It never does say who opened the door, but when it was opened, they all had a great surprise. Let’s not just let our miracle stand at the door and knock. Let’s let our miracle in.

  35. Peter knocking !!!! 12. And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Ma’-ry the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. 13. And as Pe’-ter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rho’-da. 14. And when she knew Pe’-ter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Pe’-ter stood before the gate. 15. And they said unto her, Thou art mad, But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. 16. But Pe’-ter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished. I LOVE YOU JESUS !!!! YOU MAKE MY DAY !!!! I THANK YOU FOR BREATH ON THIS EARTH !!!!

  36. Acts 12:1-23
EGO DROVE king Hero’s just like it had driven his father and grandfather. They all desperately lacked character. Herod was the surname of a family of rulers who held power by permission of the Roman Empire. Herod on this chapter is the grandson of Herod the Great.

Herod gives us so many examples of what NOT to do as I kept reading.
I wonder how many of us Leader have a BIG EGO specially when we have a position or are the Directors of a ministry.
How many of us act irrationally in difficult times or harbored anger towards others, or make decisions based on popularity. Or mistreated others just because we are leaders?
Or use our position to control others , How many of us are blinded by EGO. and how many of us like to be worship for what we do?

Lord have mercy on us and forgive us if we have in anyway aged like Herod!!!
