Acts 15

1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

3 And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

4 And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.

5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

13 And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:

14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:

17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.

18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.

19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:

20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, chief men among the brethren:

23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia.

24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.

28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

30 So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle:

31 Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.

32 And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

33 And after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.

34 Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.

35 Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

36 And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.

37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.

38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

  1. Verse 9 CEV “God treated them in the same way that he treated us. They put their faith in him, and he made their hearts pure.” In the MSG version a portion of the same verses 6-9 says “And God, who can’t be fooled by any pretense on our part but always knows a person’s thoughts, gave them the Holy Spirit exactly as he gave him to us. He treated the outsiders exactly as he treated us, beginning at the very center of who they were and working from that center outward, cleaning up their lives as they trusted and believed him.” This gospel and the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ is for all people and all nations, as we heard this past Wednesday night.

  2. 18. Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.

    God knew from the beginning of the world what He was going to do, He didn’t just decide to do something at the last minute.
    I noticed it didn’t say that known unto man were all God’s works…we often don’t know what God has planned for us next, we just have to remember:
    And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
    Romans 8:28

  3. 16. After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:

    God speaking through the prophets said the tabernacle IS fallen, not WAS fallen. It is apparent more and more that the church as a whole is in ruins. Even churches who seem to be doing good are preaching and teaching lies and “half truths”. They are leading people astray from the sanctity of God’s word and disarming the POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT in the church. They are blinded. Lord, GOD, be with them. HELP US TO ARISE STRONG AND UNITED IN YOUR TRUTH!!

  4. 28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

    29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

    The message is today is as always repent, God will show you what you should do through teaching and moving of the spirit. We must have a heart that is ready to change and accept the directions of the Lord to higher heights. It was not then and is now not to put more on us than we need to obey to live for God!

  5. A slow change is more permanent than an immediate change although both are possible with God.

    Debates are out of how long does it really take to change a habit from a negative to a positive or vise versa. The problem is that some people resist change harder than others. According to Psychology Today, new study shows ” According to a recent study (link is external), a daily action like eating fruit at lunch or running for fifteen minutes took an average of sixty-six days to become as much of a habit as it would ever become.
    However, there was a lot of variation, both among people and among habits – some people are more habit-resistant than others, and some habits are harder to pick up than others.”

    So as Christians we should be very careful NEVER to put a stumbling block to our Brothers and Sisters that are just beginning. YES, we must always be prepared to answer the regular questions, like: Why do the girls always wear skirts? Deuteronomy 22:5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.
    Why the girls don’t cut their hair? And men has short hair? 1 Corinthians 11:14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
    Most of the questions are focused on the Women for the changes are more noticeable, we stand out, separate from the fashions of today’s world.
    So the question remains what is best a gradual change by learning the word of God and following the conviction of your heart given by the Holy Ghost or an immediate change looking to fit in??? The answer lies within themselves. Some will fight the change and the conviction, and if we are hard on them they will flee; others as they educate themselves and with help of bible studies find the Truth the gradual change begins from inside out, and becomes more of a permanent change. I am a true believer that GOD CAN DO BOTH. SEEN IT SEVERAL TIMES. WE JUST GOT TO KEEP IN MIND THAT NOT ALL ARE THE SAME AND WE HAVE NO PLACE MAKING IT HARDER FOR OUR BABES IN CHRIST. Love them in Jesus Name. Teach them in Jesus Name, then stand back and let God be God. AMEN.

    When you limit God you are also limiting the people if God. The theologies of this world tries to put enough limits on God, and we have to battle against it. Why add leverage to the opposing team? We need to break away from traditional thinking and let God be God and every man a lie.

  7. Acts 15:19-20 (Message)
    19 “So here is my decision: We’re not going to unnecessarily burden non-Jewish people who turn to the Master. 20 We’ll write them a letter and tell them, ‘Be careful to not get involved in activities connected with idols, to guard the morality of sex and marriage, to not serve food offensive to Jewish Christians—blood, for instance.’

    It’s amazing how our motives reveal themselves in moments like this. Once the council had decided to not enforce circumcision anyone who wanted to any way, or got upset by the decision was not interested in seeing these gentile brothers saved.

    They were interested in control.

    When we are upset about the decisions of those in authority it shows how much we are submitted. I heard a preacher say that you don’t know how submitted you really are until you disagree.

    Our attitudes give us real insight into why we do what we are doing. Can we hear a decision we don’t agree with and still smile, and submit? If not then we create division and the spirit of the Lord is grieved with us even if our side is really what should happen.

    It is better to remain in alignment than to be right. God will work it out, and bless us for our submission and refusal to sacrifice unity.

  8. 5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

    6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

    Be careful of Pharisees in your life that try to add or subtract rules into your life trying to make it seem as though that they are teaching from the word of God when they really aren’t, they are just trying to lead you into false doctrine.

    And there will be people will try to impose opinions rather proven words straight from the bible. It can be easy to get caught up in opinions and try to make one of your own, but the one opinion we should have is God’s opinion for it is the one that matters.

  9. Acts 15:6
    And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

    We must respect are elders and the house of God and we must help the house of God and are elders More helping. Amen

  10. 28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

    The burden for the lost is great.

    It should challenge us to see seats bare on any given service. The gospel is to true not to have a full house. We must receive the vision , that pastor so deliberately tries to share every service, so that this great city is won. It is a heavy burden. This is why we must work together as one body.
    Work hard for the burden is heavy.

  11. iLove to eat the Word

    8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

    This is a great scripture to show how God gives witness to a persons heart no matter if there Jewish, or Gentile. You could be the biggest pagan the world is ever seen, then when your heart gets right God will fill you with the Holy Ghost. The only catch is, once you get the Holy Ghost you need to renew your mind on a daily basis. It’s not about a bunch of laws but it’s about a relationship with Jesus . We have a God who knows our heart, just like Cain and Abel. God bears witness , still today , to the sacrifice of and the intents of the heart

    KJV, “And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.”
    MSG, “After they were sent off and on their way, they told everyone they met as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria about the breakthrough to the Gentile outsiders. Everyone who heard the news cheered – it was terrific news!”

    We, as a body of believers, should always take “great joy in” and “cheer,” when Pastor or another minister comes to our church and tells us about the souls being saved in other cities, others states, or other countries.

    It’s Terrific News!

    Reading how the church came together to resolve their issues and differences of opinions reminds me that in Proverbs 11:14 it tells us there is safety in the multitude of couselors. When you gather the elders and great leaders together and couple their knowledge with the Spirit and prayer, you can safely make decisions based on the word. Isaiah 1:18 ” Come let us reason together saith the Lord…”

  14. 10 So why are you now challenging God by burdening the Gentile believers with a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors were able to bear? (NLT)

    Why try to fix something that doesn’t need fixing? Why carry an extra load that’s so unnecessary? I’d have to say, “Ha, pass. No thanks!” A verse prior to this says that God knows everyone’s hearts, if we maintain a sincere and true relationship with Him, He will never give us more than we can bear.

  15. 2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

    UNITY – dissension, disputation are all synonyms of discord, disunity, grudges, bitterness etc. They had unity among them. Imagine traveling by foot from city to city. It gets tiring, hot, you get disgruntled with each other, and things start getting on your nerves. However, they did not allow anything, the scripture says “small” things come between them to cause disunity. The bible says it is the small foxes that spoil the vine. We must be sensitive to the Lord and when small things rub us the wrong the way, to check our attitude and our spirit and get rid of it. I heard an old-time preacher say, you can’t control what comes into your mind, but you can control what you allow to stay there.

    Lord help me to purify my mind that so that immediately I will recognize if something is going to bring strife and disunity, so that I can remove it from my heart, mind and spirit so that I can be pure.

    Psalms 51:10 – Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

  16. 9 He treated the outsiders exactly as he treated us, beginning at the very center of who they were and working from that center outward, cleaning up their lives as they trusted and believed him.

    10 “So why are you now trying to out-god God, loading these new believers down with rules that crushed our ancestors and crushed us, too?MSG
    God treats us all the same. We are the ones that treat others different for instance: if someone comes to our church and they don’t smell good, don’t have name brand clothes, ragged out car, etc we don’t want nothing to with them. We are not the judge of people. We need to show our new converts that they are loved and welcomed to our church.
    I am thankful that we have the OI dinners for our new believers cause that shows them that we want them at the church and as our friends. We are not to clean up the sinner, let God fill them with the Holy Ghost and then clean them up. Its not our job to judge them if they don’t dress like us. God forbid if we are doing this. I have been to churches that where when the sinner comes in the church/pastor trys to clean them up on the outside, well let God do the cleaning from the inside out. If we start judging the new believers they will not stay around, we don’t want to run anyone off. God help us to have a serving heart and be friends with the new believers.

  17. Gentile Believers

    20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

    This scripture is why I am hesitate to adopt a literal following of the OT law. I support the principal/application method. It is where the OT law is influenced by a certain underlying principal. That principal is applied to present day for application. Circumcision is no longer literal. The principal was a ritual to be set apart or cleansed. We have that today with true, saving faith in Jesus Christ. Some may argue that baptism suffices this, but is more likely that the faith that causes one to be moved to baptism is the root of it.

  18. 7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

    9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

    So thankful for a God that knows my heart and what I have need of. Create in me a clean heart, renew in me a right spirit.

  19. Whose Report Will You Believe?

    2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

    3 And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

    On their way to resolving the dispute of doctrine, Paul and Barnabas did not pass up the opportunity to take up the good report of the gentile disciples in Penice and Samaria. When things go wrong, it’s easy to get so caught up in the negative situation that we are not able receive good reports. But the report of the Lord is always good, and we must look for His report as our bottom line no matter what we are facing. There will always be bad news, but with God there will always be better news.

    Philippians 4:8
    Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

    It’s really a matter of the heart. You can do all the rituals and act out all that is told but your heart is what the Lord is after.

  21. Being able to work with a fellow laborer in the ministry is rewarding. You will be able to encourage one another in Christ and pray for each other when things are not going right.

  22. 7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

    8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

    9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
    The jews weren’t too happy about the gentiles getting the same treatment or opportunity to know God so Peter had to remind them thats not what God want us to act towards our brothers and sister’s.

  23. MORE UNITY = MORE INVOLVEMENT

    22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, chief men among the brethren:
    23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia.
    24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
    25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

    As UNITY prevailed in the church, the church was empowered to dispatch ministers to assist in the teaching/preaching of the gospel. We are called to be witnesses in all areas of our lives. There is no great display and demonstration of being a WITNESS than to operate with UNITY.

    Working together empowers the church to gain and maintain victory.

    There are certain restrictions that come with living a life turned to God. As a leader it is not appropriate to force feed standards in a new believer. These things come after building a relationship with God and a hunger to be more like Him. We need to encourage new believers when we see them striving to be closer to God, not judging them for looking different.

  25. “And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.” Although they were faced with opposition, they remained positive and spoke of all the good God (Jesus) had done. One that is right with God and the man of God, and remains positive will prevail. Dear God, help me too mindful and speak of your goodness more; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  26. Act 15:7 — Act 15:9
    And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.
    And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us,
    and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.

    We can sometimes do everthing we have to on the outside but if our heart isn’t in it, then it doesn’t matter because God wants your heart and faith.

  27. We don’t need any heavy yokes to carry, and we can give God thanks for the new covenant. The old has passed away, now we have a new life in Christ Jesus……

  28. Questions will arise whenever we are learning, more so when we are learning about salvation. It’s the reason why we have discipleship classes and bible studies to learn doctrine. The question here is addressed of what is necessary for salvation? Do we need to add anything to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross? This same issue is at the heart of the argument here. Some people argue that adherence to the Jewish law as a prequisite for salvation. In particular, some say that that circumcision is mandatory. This council in Jerusalem is a gathering of leaders who address this critical issue and come to a conclusion through Paul that salvation is through the grace of Jesus alone. This is true for the Jews and to the Gentiles. Nothing can, or should, be added to the finished work of the cross.

  29. “God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith.”(‭‭Acts‬ ‭15:8-9‬ ‭NIV‬‬)

    We seek revelation of your vision the same way the council here does. Paul reveals the need for purifying our hearts by faith, and justification by faith, and sanctification by the Holy Ghost, cannot be separated; and that both are the gift of God. May we have that faith the Searcher of hearts approves of . Then our hearts and consciences will be purified from the guilt of sin, and we shall be freed from the burdens some try to lay upon the disciples.

    Ps 139: 23 “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

  30. 8: And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

    He knows our hearts and still gave us the precious gift of the Holy Ghost!

  31.  Once saved not always saved. Follow-up is very important. We must encourage each other and lift each other up. I wonder what Paul would do if he had access to all methods of communication that we have today? I have no doubt that he would utilize each and everyone of them to follow up on every believer.
    “After some time Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s go back and visit each city where we previously preached the word of the Lord, to see how the new believers are doing.””
