Acts 14

1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.

2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.

3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

4 But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.

5 And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them,

6 They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about:

7 And there they preached the gospel.

8 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked:

9 The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

10 Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.

11 And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.

12 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.

13 Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.

14 Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,

15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:

16 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.

17 Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

18 And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.

19 And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.

20 Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,

22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

24 And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.

25 And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia:

26 And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled.

27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.

28 And there they abode long time with the disciples.

  1. Well…will the real disciples stand up??

The apostle Paul came by and prayed for the lame man who was lame from birth. Wow!what faith. JESUS HAS CALLED US TO HAVE THE SAME FAITH.
People may not like us like they did Paul, but Oh Well. When we listen to God first all things work good for all those that believe in Jesus. What a good life. Happiness and joy.
Love Godx love people, love yourself in Jesus Name Amen.

  2. 15. And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:

We are not here to bring attention and glory to ourselves; Jesus is the One who died for our sins and does the miraculous…all glory belongs to Him, we are just His servants.

    2 Corinthians 4:5 KJV
For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.

  3. Acts 14:10
Said with a loud voice stand upright on thy foot and he leaped and walked.

We must speak with a loud voice and walk towards him thy Lord and teach people about the word of God More Jesus . Amen

9 and listening as Paul preached. Looking straight at him, Paul realized he had faith to be healed.

The Apostles Paul and Barnabas went through alot here in just a short time amount of time. But through it all they kept praying, preaching, and believing. This lame man had faith to be healed. We can pray for folks until we turn blue, but they must have faith to be healed. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of the Lord.

  5. 21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,

22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

The word from the apostles was that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. There is no way to miss tribulation if we live for God. Most people do not want to suffer tribulation in this life, but all good things comes with a price. The price of living for God will cost us some persecution, but the reward will be worth the cost. Life eternal with Jesus Christ and heaven.

  6. 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.

It is ok to get angry about things. We need to be careful where the urge to anger is coming from though. We can all likely quote Ephesians 4:6 but I am referring to the urge that starts the anger. Getting angry is a temptation. What we do after that can lead to sin. Try and determine the motives of the person who is creating the anger within us. Is it our spouse? Likely, there is a lack of communication between the two spouses and one may be retaliating for a previous injustice or it could be an actual misunderstanding. Is it our Pastor? Likely, he is speaking against something in our lives that should not have a place in our lives in the first place. Maybe the Word of God is pricking our hearts concerning a situation in our lives and we are easily offended over this situation and cannot see the love in which the correction was given.

God does not leave standing around like lost sheep. Matthew 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. We are to protect ourselves without stooping to the level of our attackers. An angry outburst accomplishes little, besides satisfying our emotions. It also gratifies those who believe all Christians are hypocrites. Jesus told us to expect persecution. The nature of today’s world is that someone is always trying to find an advantage in every situation. If we are shrewd yet innocent, we will not be as shocked when it happens and will be better prepared to deal with it calmly.

  7. The Culture Phenomenon

I called this the Culture Phenomenon because I have seen it happened a lot in the Hispanic Community. This is a phenomenon that happens when people are so rooted in their culture traditions that although they do believe in the word they are unwilling or resisted to change of their culture traditions. Change is hard, and when people tend to resist change it is even harder. That is why God Himself has difficulties because here He is trying with all His Heart to change us, mold us at his likeness but we as human place too much value to our tradition and cultures to let go. In the Hispanic tradition there are certain things that makes it difficult to a complete change to the likeness of God. Women prefer to wear jewelry as in the word of God in 1 Peter 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: 6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are , as long as ye do well , and are not afraid with any amazement. 7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered .
The debate still active today is it or not a sin??? I couldn’t answer it, all I know is that the word of God is true and I know my God takes Joy in our obedience to His word.
So let it be a sacrifice of animals, or just something as silly as jewelry they are culture traditions which men and women are unable or do not desire to let go for the Glory of the Only One that matters Jesus Christ our Lord. Help us God identify with in ourselves those things that we are unable to let go in sake of our culture, rituals, and traditions. Allow us to make the change to please you, to rejoice in you, and to be able to surrender all for a change in you. Mold us to your likeness and make us an instrument of your will. In Jesus Name AMEN.

  8. 22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

The NLT says the souls of the disciples were strengthened. We shouldn’t be afraid of the tribulation we must face and run away, instead be strengthened and trust God that He will see you through.

  9. Greek statues of Zeus he was know as a large powerful figure. This suggest of how Barnabous Pauls companion and one of the most attractive of the N.T. people may have looked

  10. 22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

22 where they strengthened the believers. They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them that we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God. (NLT)

In order for us to be an Acts church, we must ensure the believers are strengthened. We are only as strong as our weakest member. Encourage those around you, encourage yourself. Remember we go through the trials and tribulations to make us stronger!

  11. Acts 14:13-15
13, Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.
14, Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,
15, And saying, We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities (any thing or act that is vain, futile, idle, or worthless) unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein.

These people were pagan worshipers and they worshipped and sacrificed to false gods. Barnabas and Paul were trying to tell them to turn from their worthless, idle, futile ways and worship the one True Living God.
There is much worship to false gods in our world today. We need to share with people the One True Living God, JESUS Christ.

  12. MORE TO DO

    (DONT COUNT ME OUT YET)

A quote that I have heard all of my life seems applicable here.

“You can’t keep a good man down”.

I will add to that quote.

“You can’t keep GOD’s man down”.

Paul got STONED and they though he was done, but the disciples witnessed another MIRACLE. Paul got UP and preached!

He trained and encouraged believers as he commended them to the LORD for HIS service.

Get up Man of GOD! You may be stoned but your not done! GO Teach! GO Preach! GO Lead! Go Train!

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  13. 21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,

22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

In living for God there will be many test and trials, there will always be people putting you down and ridiculing you. This is just the small price we must pay to have freedom, for freedom isn’t free! But the reward we will receive in the end for staying faithful is so much sweeter!!

  14. 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.

Which side are we on? Do we truly believe what we say believe? Do we know why we believe that way? It is because of revelation we have received from the Word of God or because someone told us what to believe?

The spirit of deception is alive and running rampant trying to destroy the unity of the Church. We must know what and why we believe what we do so that we are not swayed with every wind of unbelief that comes our way.

Unbelief breeds doubt, discord, distractions and breaks the bonds of unity. We must know the Word of God so we can refute anything the enemy would bring to our minds that is not true. The Word of God is our weapon which we cannot use to it’s fullest extent if we don’t know.

We must get in the Word….. We must stay in the Word….. We must live the Word and we must know allow it to teach and lead us so that we do not become deceived and let unbelief stir up evil against the brethren.

  15. Acts 14:21 They preached the gospel in the city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.

  16. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” ‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭1:7‬ ‭KJV‬‬. We should not fear what comes against us because God will have our back. Even if we don’t hear him there’s only a semicolon in our lives. That means there is more to come! We are victorious!

  17. 3 so they stayed there for some time and spoke boldly, in reliance on the Lord…
When we minister, we are in reliance on the Lord. It is not our word that we should speak but His!

  18. 9 The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,
10 Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked

Our testimony give others faith…faith in the things that they might think it’s over. Faith in the one who can do anything and everything because He is Jesus and His name reigns forever.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” Rom 1:16
Like Pastor said don’t be ashamed to tell others about Jesus even if you think their not interested. Going and telling others of the great things that Jesus has done. Thank you Jesus for your mercy and love 🙂

  19. 19Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe

The sudden change of feeling is almost as startling as that which transformed the hosannas of the multitudes at Jerusalem into the cry of “Crucify Him!” (Mat21:9; Mat 27:22.) It is not difficult, however, to understand these feeling in a barbarous and superstitious people. We find a like sudden change in an opposite direction in the people of Melita (Acts 28:6). If the strangers who were endowed with such mysterious powers were not “gods in the likeness of men,” they might be sorcerers, or even demons, in the evil sense of that word. The Jews, ever ready to impute signs and wonders to Beelzebub, the chief of the demons ( Mat 10:34; Matt12:24), would readily work on this feeling, and terrify the people into the cruel ferocity of panic.

We read here in two verses how quickly people can turn on you. One moment the people are sacrificing to you and calling youa god, the next your ride or die in the gospel Barnabas is not even made mention of being around when you are getting stoned and presumed dead. Your “friends” can be nowhere to be found when you need them the most, and some trails are meant only for you to go through on your own. Those who foolishly praise you can leave you high and dry in a moments notice. The beauty of it all is the last sentence of vs 20 “The next day he and Barabas left for Derbe” it doesn’t say he gave up, it doesn’t say he chewed out Barabas for not being their for him, it doesn’t say he put out hit men to kill those who stoned him. No. He got up and kept moving for the Gospel’s sake. “You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!” (Rocky Balboa-Sylvester Stalone) This is the mentality we need to adopt to keep pushing forward.

  20. 21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,

22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

The path through the kingdom of God is not an easy, we all must go through tribulation and trials in life all along the way. The devil will try to fight against you and turn you away from your path with God by any means. But the good news is, no matter how much trouble the devil tries to put you through, in the end, you will, because when you follow Jesus, God is on your side.

But why do we go through tribulations? Without trials, we won’t have those moments in life where are character was shaped and strengthened. It’s through the tough times that we need to love the most and when we need God the most. After all, if nothing bad were to ever happen to you, it would be easy to say that you don’t need God anymore because everything in your life is good.

And when we go through trouble, God uses it in our lives to help teach us his ways and help us grow spiritually in him. How can we show compassion and mercy to other people, or receive it, when there is nothing to be compassionate for? Out of trouble is where love can blossom and be used to it’s greatest potential, that’s when we can show people the love of God through us.

  21. People will join together to stir up accusation against you. One of the enemy’s tactics is to try to confuse you with false accusation. He knows this will throw you off your guard if you get caught up in it. The truth has a way of revealing itself. Don’t get caught it in heresy, get caught up in what God is saying.

  22. We are all men.

15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:

There is only one God and his name is Jesus. We have the MAN of God over us to guide us. As the mouth piece. Thank you Jesus for the MAN of God in my life. Pastor. My prayer is that we would remember that pastor, too, is a man. That has a change from God to lead our church.

  23. 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.
    (Acts 14:2 KJVStrongs)

2 But the unbelieving Jews worked up a whispering campaign against Paul and Barnabas, sowing mistrust and suspicion in the minds of the people in the street.
    (Acts 14:2 Message)

We have a choice to make. We can either allow our minds to be used by the enemy, and speak death, or we can speak life. When we choose to speak life we will find ourselves edifying, and encouraging others. Speaking life always leads people to God, and never makes them feel shame, or worthless.

Speaking evil it literally killing them. Even scientists say that what we say has a direct impact on us, and the environment around us. Our words are powerful. What we believe can help us, or harm us.

“While the placebo effect demonstrates the power of positive thinking, expectation, hope, and nurturing care, the nocebo effect demonstrates the physiological effects of negative belief, fear, anxiety, and what Martin Seligman terms “learned helplessness.””
    http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-9690/scientific-proof-that-negative-beliefs-harm-your-health.html

Remember we think it before we speak it. If we think the right things we will speak the right things.

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
    (Philippians 4:8 KJVStrongs)

  24. Flee disunity flee deceit
    Acts 14The Message (MSG)

14 1-3 When they got to Iconium they went, as they always did, to the meeting place of the Jews and gave their message. The Message convinced both Jews and non-Jews—and not just a few, either. But the unbelieving Jews worked up a whispering campaign against Paul and Barnabas, sowing mistrust and suspicion in the minds of the people in the street. The two apostles were there a long time, speaking freely, openly, and confidently as they presented the clear evidence of God’s gifts, God corroborating their work with miracles and wonders.

4-7 But then there was a split in public opinion, some siding with the Jews, some with the apostles. One day, learning that both the Jews and non-Jews had been organized by their leaders to beat them up, they escaped as best they could to the next towns—Lyconia, Lystra, Derbe, and that neighborhood—but then were right back at it again, getting out the Message.

When you are walking in the spirit and doing the will of God. People will stir up things against you, try to deceive you, and possibly hurt you. Yet, it is important that you do not get involved and allow your feeling to get hurt but stay away from it.

“Peter do you love me? ” flee disunity
“Peter do you love me? ” flee hurt
“Peter do you love me? ” stop feeding goats and feed My sheep.

Strif and discord are all characteristic of goats. God called us to feed sheep and not goats. This is why the disciples left. For we are called to spread the gospel unto death.

  25. “After preaching the Good News in Derbe and making many disciples, Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch of Pisidia, where they strengthened the believers.

When the Good News is shared disciples are increased.

  26. 27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.

Thanks be to God for the obedience of the apostles. God opened the door of faith unto us Gentiles but he used human vessels to deliver the message of the gospel. Here we see how they tell all that God had done, giving God the glory for it.

May we pray and head to the leading of the Spirit that may send us to a people that God may be opening a door that they may come to the faith.

  27. 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.

We should love one another, because God loves us all.

  28. 14 Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, 15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein.

To say they were concerned would be an understatement “they rent their clothes”. One that is foolish enough to present a “look at me” attitude or statement and not give God (Jesus) the glory, is literally playing with fire. Dear God, let me not have a “I or me” mentality, but have the “Look what the Lord has done” mindset; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  29. 9 and listening as Paul preached. Looking straight at him, Paul realized he had faith to be healed.
Faith is powerful. the fact that Paul could sense this man’s faith is amazing! If Paul could see it how much more could God see it! Wow! Without faith it is impossible to please God, but with faith nothing is impossible!

  30. “In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭14:8-10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

You may have things have hindered you from birth (physical or spiritual) but that doesn’t define your future. Allow God to use people to speak into your life. Obedience can/will go a long way.

  31. ““Friends, why are you doing this? We are merely human beings—just like you! We have come to bring you the Good News that you should turn from these worthless things and turn to the living God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them.”
    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭14:15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Hearing these saying all the time growing up, “You can do that church stuff, but I can’t because I’m not a Christian.” Or even people in church and out of saying comments such as, “well they’ve been raised in church they should know better.” Even, ” they can’t understand because they don’t know the world, so I won’t talk to them.”

We all need to realize we are all human sometimes people think they can’t “fit in” the church seen…well they are wrong and it’s our job to let them know we are human and to join them into our church family.

We also need to realize just because someone was raised in church doesn’t mean they have that strong relationship with God or doesn’t understand everything. That’s when we need to pray for our brothers and sister even when we might think they have it going good..(you never know).

Also we can’t discriminate anyone just because we think they don’t understand what someone went through or if they don’t know they world and were raised in church….you don’t know their story. If Jesus had cliques or said these things HE wouldn’t be the caring God we know Him as. But He loves and cares for everyone equally. So no gossiping, no cliques…..we are to be a family and pray for one another we are the body of Christ. So let’s not act like it…but let’s BE THE BODY!

  32. 8 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked:

  33. 19 And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.

20 Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

The crowd supposed Paul dead and left him, but the disciples stood around him, no doubt in prayer for him, and he rose up. Whether a miracle or not, Paul was definitely wounded near death but God raised him up. Even when situations seem hopeless to us, we must stand in faith, believe God and expect him to answer. The disciples could have despaired and scattered, yet the rest of this chapter shows that these men fulfilled their call.

  34. Wow, isn’t this how it is in everyone’s lives. One minute they commend you, and then the next they are ready to stone you. But, with Paul & Barnabas they were being treated like God’s and were given new names. The verse below is their next step toward them. One minute praising them like were a God, the next you got it, pick up the rock!

19 And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.

We all will experience persecution, but you can easily say Paul had more than his share. He was strong in the faith, just like when he was Saul, he was zealous then, but his zeal had been transformed by the power of God.

    “Be Safe”………………………………………………………………

  35. 3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands. (Acts 14:3 KJV)

Paul and Barnabas; spoke boldly to the Lord, Because the minds of the Gentiles were so filled with prejudice and malignity against the gentiles , one would have thought, that therefore they should’ve hastened out of the way; or, if they had preached, they should’ve have preached cautiously, for fear of giving further provocation to those who were already sufficiently enraged: no, but the contrary; therefore they abode there a long time spoke boldly to the Lord.Who gave them a testimony unto the word of Gods grace Which they delivered, working with them according to Gods promises, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands!!!
