Acts 16

1 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:

2 Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.

3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.

4 And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.

5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,

7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.

8 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.

9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

11 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;

12 And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.

13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,

20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

21 And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.

23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.

28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,

30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.

36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.

37 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.

38 And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.

39 And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.

40 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

  1. And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? (‭Acts‬ ‭16‬:‭25-26, 30‬ KJV)

Praise The Lord! Through much prayer, revival will show up as we continue to pray for our city!!!! Thousands will be attending the POFW!!!! Thank you JESUS for the harvest.

    Pray without ceasing. (‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬ KJV)

  2. 4 And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.

5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

The answer to adding daily to the church is made simple here. We need to be established in the faith and found solid in this message as a church. We must go out with the message that the Apostles ordained, which is Jesus Christ and him crucified. Let us preach Jesus and what he can do for this generation. The Holy Ghost is the same today as it was yesterday!

  3. So many things in this chapter this morning. The beginning talks about Paul and his plans of what he wanted to do; but, the Holy Spirit (the Spirit of Jesus) blocked his route. This could have gone so many different ways if Paul had not listened. Our actions do not just affect our own lives; but, many (the Europeans would not have heard the good news, Lydia and her whole household would not have believed and been baptized). The middle part of the chapter shows how even though Paul and Silas were in a bad spot, a bad situation, a no way out outlook; they still were rejoicing in the Lord. How we may think? We have to put our focus on Jesus, the one who is control of all things. He knows where we are, he knows how we are feeling, and if we will just hold on; our breakthrough is coming. Our obedience and determination that nothing is going to stop or separate us from God’s plan for our lives is key.

  4. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

Her worship opened her ears and prayer opened her heart. When we continue to war in prayer for the people of this city and the souls we are inviting to Friends Day His will open their heart. Let us pray that the blinders would be removed from their eyes, that they will respond to His with genuine worship, and they will be receptive to the preached Word.

Notice she was not the only one saved but all her house. We are not asking God to bless friends Day. He ordained it so it’s already blessed. Yet, we are standing as a mighty army, tactfully invading Satan’s domain, and pulling lives out of darkness into His marvelous light.

  5. MORE AUTHORITY

Occasionally we face strong opposition, the disciples illustrate to us here, through the POWER of JESUS name that as we walk in the Spirit of JESUS we also walk in the authority of JESUS.

There will always be hecklers where Prayer, Revival and Harvest are happening. As GOD fearing, soul loving believers we must use great wisdom in when, where and how to exercise the authority of JESUS to silence those that strongly oppose the will and work of GOD.

  6. Acts 16:28
But Paul cried with a loud voice saying do thyself no harm for we are all here.

We must come together at church with a loud voice of praise and bring the word of God More Jesus. Amen

  7. iLove to eat More Word

Acts 16:3 NLT “So Paul wanted him to join them on their journey. In deference to the Jews of the area, he arranged for Timothy to be circumcised before they left, for everyone knew that his father was a Greek.”

Some might have the question, “Why did Timothy have to be circumcised?” If we remember, just the last chapter Paul and the rest of the Apostles confirmed that the Gentile believers did not have to be circumcised. Why the change of heart now Paul? The answer is simple…Leaders give up privileges. yep, even though Timothy had the right to remain uncircumcised, Paul asked him to be circumcised so that he would not offend the Jews. Of course, the Jews were still offended, however, Paul did his part to the best of his ability and I believe he was blessed because of it.

Leaders forsake privileges in order that some might be saved.

  8. 16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

My thoughts, as I was reading this, went to Bro Mahany Sr.’s testimony of how he would walk down the street and people who were possessed would fall down. Wow! What a testimony. Just as the disciples and men of God now, we have that same power. But we deny it. Through our actions and our walk with God. We must remember that Moses when he came down from the mountain. That his face shown with light. Because of his relation , not relationship but closeness ,with
God on the mountain. We must go deeper in our walk with Him.

  9. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

Paul and Silas’ prayer obviously was not a “lay me down to sleep” prayer. It must have been spiritual warfare, intercession, touching Heaven for their need and they experienced results.

We must get out of our “lay me down to sleep” mentality of prayer….just putting in our time. We have to evolve to that deep intercession, spiritual warfare, where we know something has been accomplished because we either see immediate results, or we feel the burden lift and know the work has been done and we are to wait for the results.

  10. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

It took ONE woman’ to save her whole house, imagine what a church of 350-450 could do, if we would just lay aside every little hurt feeling and every sin and come together to serve our Lord. Let’s change this nation by starting with our city!!

  11. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

It didn’t matter where Paul went, he testified everywhere! He went down by the river where prayer meeting took place and converted Lydia, now he and Silas are in jail, beaten and bound, yet still testifying with praises to their God.

  12. Àcts 16: About midnight Paul and Salis were praying and singing hymns to God and to the other prisoners were listening to them . suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shake. At once all the prison doors flew open and everyone’s chains came loose. The jailer woke up and when he saw the prison doors open he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted don’t harm yourself ? We are all here!

  13. Act 16:1 — Act 16:2
16 Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek.
He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium.

When working in the kingdom it is very important to have a good testimony that way the Labour that we are doing for His kingdom will have a greater impact and won’t make someone else stumble.

  14. The Spirit would not allow…

What kind of things did the city of Bithynia do where the Spirit of God would not allow the Word to be preached? Could this be an evil city? It could it be someone had already been to there and were cast out by the cities leadership.

“After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.”

Maybe that was not it. Maybe there was a more pressing need in Troas. However, I dont believe this to be true. I would imagine there were needs in every city. God proclaimed at the begining that He would not always get along with men.

Gen. 6:3 “And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.”

I am not perfect but I strive to be. This week Bro Guy sent a challenge to pray more than twice a day. Again, I am not perfect but I strive to be. I do not want the Spirit to pass me by.

  15. Acts 16:1-2
1, THEN came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Gree:
2, Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.

It is important as a Christian to be “well reported of,” to have a good name and a good reputation. I always say, “Integrity goes a long way, don’t ever loose it.”. Especially as a Christian, people are always listening and watching you to see if you are what you say you are. Rom. 14:16, “Let not then your good be evil spoken of.”

  16. Acts 16:16-18 (KJV Strong’s)
16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: 17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. 18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

This is an interesting story. This woman was made a financial slave to these men because at one time in her life she yielded herself entirely to a demonic spirit. She opened herself so much that the spirit of divination possessed her mortal body.

When she sees Paul, Luke, and the others with them she begins to follow them around proclaiming that they had the way of salvation. She said these were the servants of the most high God. However once she has grieved them Paul casts the demon out of her.

Somewhere deep inside the woman wanted to be free of this spirit and of her lifestyle. Although she may not have had very pure motives but to annoy and grieve the apostles she knew if she could just be around them she perhaps could be free.

When I got back in church I knew if I just kept going and didn’t give up then God would make a way. Amazingly he did and continues to. Just get them there and God can do the rest. Maybe she didn’t know how much she needed deliverance until it happened.

  17. Everything is fine until someone puts their hand on your money

Everything is fine, this young lady had no problems. No one consider her a threat, although she was posses. She and or the demons in her had to recognize that the apostles were servants of the MOST HIGH GOD. For the word says EVERY TONGUE MUST CONFESS!!! Now the moment her master’s pocket gets harm because she was delivered of the chains of this demons, the master goes crazy saying the apostles are making all kind of trouble. It is the same today,be drugging is fine as long as we don’t preach about tithes and offerings and you see people fighting it… Please you have no idea of how blessed you can be if you obey your Lord when it comes to money. Let’s put it this way define your Lord, who is lord over your life the Lord Jesus Christ who can bless you with no limits or Mr. Money that no matter what you may think money can not buy love, freedom, peace, or health. You might be abl to get medications but you can’t buy a healthy body with it. Now, God gives you a brand new body, dress you in white, and place a crown upon your head. Now that I can be happy with.

  18. 35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.

  19. 16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

Every time we enter into prayer we are on a spirit realm and things begin to happen in the atmosphere. Spirits will recognize the children of God that have the Spirit of God in them. Hence the scripture where the spirit inside a possessed man spoke to those trying to cast it; “Paul I know and Jesus I know, but who are you?” This we should know that, The Lord has given us authority over all devils according to Luke 9. And if we are obedient and submitted under authority we have authority. Lets keep this in mind as we come to prayer; the spirit realm should shake. Greater, the Word says Greater is He that is in us, The Lord Jesus Christ!

  20. “Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.”

    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭16:3

Freedom and position can become a stumbling block. As a leader we must not abuse the power of our title. As a leader we are here to serve all, not to be served. Leader’s surrender privileges. Leadership is influence Application Prayer: Lord, I pray that I lead with your character and integrity. And that I would be accountable and submissive.

“What then is the [actual] reward that I get? Just this: that in my preaching the good news (the Gospel), I may offer it [absolutely] free of expense [to anybody], not taking advantage of my rights and privileges [as a preacher] of the Gospel. For although I am free in every way from anyone’s control, I have made myself a bond servant to everyone, so that I might gain the more [for Christ]. To the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to men under the Law, [I became] as one under the Law, though not myself being under the Law, that I might win those under the Law.”
    ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭9:18-20‬ ‭AMP‬‬

  21. 17. The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

    18. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

Paul put up with her for many days before he finally got tired of it and cast the spirit out. How long will we put up with things we have the ability to cast out before we take action?

  22. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

I love this. The prisoners heard them. The prisoners were in the same predicament as Paul and Silas but Paul and Silas stood out, left an impression because in their darkest hour they lifted up Jesus! All around them people saw the trouble they were in but because they didn’t succumb to the trouble God was lifted up and glorified!

  23. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

Praise God in the bad and good times, and he will set you free.

  24. 5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

Pastor spoke a word last service about sending those who would accept the call and open churches, because he anticipates a great harvest of people.
Today outreach was a learning experience. For just 11 people, we went for about an hour and put out 1,000 door hangers and talked to some people.
Only those willing to put in the work will reap the benefits.

  25. 6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, 7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.

Although the path may not always be easy or clear, the one thing for sure is; one will never hear, if one will not listen. Dear God, help me to hear and follow, you; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  26. A Place Of Prayer

Having a place of prayer is about more than simply having a physical location, it is about a lifestyle of seeking God. When Lydia came to her place of prayer, that’s when she encountered the Disciples and was able to hear and be obedient to the Gospel. We will be led with divine purpose if we give ourselves to that special place of devotion and prayer, allowing God to work in our hearts as He desires.

    Daniel 6:10
Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

    Romans 12:12
    Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

    Jude 1:20-21
20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

  27. “The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭16:34‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I find it amusing that once this man was fed spiritually, he fed Paul a physical meal. Goes to show that food and fellowship physically and spiritually go hand in hand. They are both good for the body 🙂

  28. In this chapter what stood out to me was that during journey they faced multiple things….with this chapter we can relate it with what we face sometimes in our walk with God. Such as the many people getting saved and coming to God.

Then the woman who would follow them everyday seemed like a gossiper talking about them. There will always be people talking about something.

Then there will be victories in our walk. Such as the jail doors being opened and them being free to go without a trial.

The bible is full of numerous life lessons we just need to pay attention and read…God is always helping and guiding us, we just need to listen.

    Seek, Read, Pray, Listen

  29. 18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

I wondered at first why Paul would allow the possessed woman’s spirit to continue to irritate him. He’s been used of God to cast out demons before, heal the sick and witness miracles of all sorts. On the other hand if we examine the person with a possession we can see they are more than content with their darkness and interested in pulling others in also. Nobody wanted to see this girl delivered because of the profit her owners made out of her. The demonic spirit grieved Paul and was effecting his ministry which is why he cast it out. Not everyone wants to see souls saved and demons cast out, some are content with looking the other way while they suffer the possessed life headed to hell. Thank God for a man of God who will stop us in our tracks when we are headed in the wrong direction.

  30. At the midnight cry, God made the earth shake and released his anointed servant. So, remember in the midnight hour, you too can be free………….

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

    “Endure”………………………………………………………………

  31. Just seeing if they were going to listen. God told them not to go toMacedonia and as soon as they arrived at thei destination they were told to go to Macedonia. This simple act of following directions could have saved heir lives. We are just told they were forbidden of the Holy Ghost and then they were told to go. How wonderful it is to follow the voice of God.

  32. 6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,

There will be times when the answer is no. Yet we must still be obedient and submissive.

    Submission begins when agreement ends.

  33. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

The people who are in prison will be the first ones to hear you praise God in your prison

  34. 32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

We need to reach people, as the jailor was, for Jesus, for the bible says the gospel shall be preached around the world. Whether it be neighbor, co worker or family member, everyone needs to hear the name of Jesus preached to them

  35. 26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.(16:26)

The angel of the lord descended from heaven, an the earthquake was in such circumstances that it was regarded as a symbol of Gods presence and as an answer to prayer. when they had prayed over the place where they had gathered together was shaken they were all filled with the holy spirit and they began to speak the word of God with boldness. The design of this was, doubtless, to furnish them proof of the presence of the lord and protection of God, and to provided a way for them to escape.

  36. 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Amen!!! Hallelujah!!! I recieve it!!! My house shall be saved because I believe in the oneness of Jesus and the devil will NOT steal that from me!!!! Before coming to POFW I had fear that what if my children will grow up being pagans and not fear God, but I’ve learned if I stay faithful and train them now that they are little they shall not astray:) Glory!!! Everyday I pray over them and cover them with the blood of Jesus…..even though they are small they are smart and know who to call in when in pain. My kids will sing songs randomly on their own, they tell others they can’t eat till they pray, even cover you when you are showing skin 🙂 and will resite memory verses to others. Adults get in awe because their only 2 & 4 yrs old but there is POWER in the name of Jesus!!!! Seeing my children do all those things make me dream in how they will serve The Lord. 🙂 hallelujah!!!
