Acts 17

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

33 So Paul departed from among them.

34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

  1. The end of verses 17-18 MSG says “…..But others, listening to him go on about Jesus and the resurrection, were intrigued: “That’s a new slant on the gods. Tell us more.” You may think sometimes that who you are reaching for isn’t listening; but, in fact the Lord is intriguing and pricking their hearts to want MORE! Our job is to keep reaching, keep introducing as the end of verses 22-23 MSG says “…I’m here to introduce you to this God so you can worship intelligently, know who you’re dealing with.” We are God-created, and made to worship Him!

  2. 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

Paul’s spirit was stirred in him over the sinful idolatrous ways he saw of the people of his day. Our spirit should be moved in us as Christians when we see the ways of people of our day. A quote from the late Elder Verbal Bean: he always said I wonder if anyone has wept over this city. We should weep over Fort Worth and the surrounding area with true tears and a real burden. This area needs God to work a miracle in their day.

    John 11:35
    Jesus wept.
    Matthew 23:37
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Paul felt as Jesus did in his day I gather you and teach you, yet you continue to rebel against me. Yes Jesus wept over Jerusalem many times, and told his disciples weep not for me but weep for the lost sheep of the house of Israeli. We need to weep over the lost in our area everyday! Believe me or not the number of lost souls are growing everyday. Some will say I thought the church was growing, it is, but the population is growing faster than the church. We have a huge task in front of us today! Weep over your city!

  3. 28. For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

    As the old hymn goes…
Without Him I could do nothing
    Without Him I’d surely fail
Without Him I would be drifting
Like a ship without a sail

  4. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent.

The time to turn away from the things that keep you from God is now! Repent for worshipping false idols, our King is coming soon and we will all be judged according to our works.

  5. MORE GOSPEL TRUTH

The GOSPEL is “Good News”. The “Good News” that should be shared and spread throughout all the world is that of the disciples.

    JESUS
    Created the Heavens and Earth
    Robed himself in flesh
    Suffered
    Was Crucified
    Rose from the dead
    Ascended into the heavens
    Lives in his church today
Will RETURN to earth for HIS Church

We MUST be Ready for HIS return.

    Repent
Be Baptized in the name of JESUS
Receive the gift of the Holy Ghost
Live a pure, holy, separated life unto JESUS

    Amen.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

    Good Manners
2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.
4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

Paul had good manners. The Word says, “As his manner was…” referring to his custom or habit of doing a certain thing on a continual basis. It’s always more beneficial to the Kingdom of God to have good manners then to have bad manners. Pastor has attempted through this blogging system to establish good manners of daily reading the Word of God.

  7. Acts 17:11 (KJV Strong’s)
11 — These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

    Acts 17:11 (AMP)
11 Now these [Jews] were better disposed and more noble than those in Thessalonica, for they were entirely ready and accepted and welcomed the message [concerning the attainment through Christ of eternal salvation in the kingdom of God] with inclination of mind and eagerness, searching and examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

This is what I call healthy skepticism. The people disputed with Paul in their minds but instead of rejecting the word of God and walking away they walked to the word of God and studied to see if these things were so.

I listened to a message awhile back, not at our church, and heard a few things that didn’t seem to mesh well. I searched the scriptures and found what the bible really said about something, chapter and verse. We can be blessed by taking the word we here preached and searching the scriptures to find it for ourselves.

It’s one thing to hear the word and accept it, but it’s a whole other level when we see it for ourselves. No one can take that away from us.

  8. 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

When Paul saw the sin that had took over the city it began to touch his spirit. Yet in this day and time we are so use to sin that has overtook this world it doesn’t seem to affect us. But it should, as we see these sins before us, we should begin to intercede for the souls that have been lost in sin and lead them to salvation!!

  9. 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

We are all blood brothers and sisters. We are all from the same creator. God. Who filled us with blood. The same blood. Our culture, since it has taken God out of many things, has forgotten how to love others. As the church we must show that love. My co works can’t imagine me coming to a mixed church. Hallelujah that I do.

  10. 19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

We should we on the look out for the opportunities that may come up that we may preach Jesus to whomever. Don’t waste time or the opportunity. If some people are willing to hear you speak to them JESUS.

  11. “And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures”. If ones actions were also recorded for all to read, what would it say about ones; “manner”. Dear God, forgive me and change so that my “manner” may be pleasing to you; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  12. ““He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need.”
    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭17:24-25‬ ‭NLT‬‬

THANK YOU JESUS!!!! Thank You for satisfying all our needs! You cease to amaze me! We have a mighty, unforgettable, outstanding….etc….the list can go one about You Lord!

  13. 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
There are some beautiful statements about us and our God! First what a blessing to know that God is not far from us…. That he sees us and knows us and desires to be close to us! What a blessing and a privilege.
Secondly to know that in him we do everything!! What a blessing that is! “For we are His offspring” meaning that God himself made us and molded us to be formed “in his image” what a honor! God desires to be close to us because we are His children…

  14. “For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭17:23‬ ‭NIV‬‬

We are ALL addicts. Once you accept that notion you can really evaluate your life by asking yourself one simple question. “What do I worship more than anything else?” Is it media, relationships, sports, food or perhaps even religion. If the answer wasn’t Jesus it’s because you have shifted things in your life to replace or lower His status. The people in this scripture were ignorant of who their god was but we shouldn’t. We serve an almighty powerful savior! Let’s let the world know who the true living God is. I’m addicted to Jesus!

  15. 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
for we live in him what a joyful feeling !!!!!!

  16. Wow, how is it that people will worship a God that is unknown or they don’t know, but yet when you witness the gospel of Christ Jesus, who is the creator of heaven & earth, and is very well known because he made himself to be known, and known by his people. They would rather just worship, thin air rather get to know the one true God. The God of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob………………….

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

    “Endure”……………………………………………………………………………………….

  17. “That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.”

    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭17:10‬ ‭NLT

In the passage the brethren is used to protect Paul. This encourages us to have compassion with our brothers and sisters. We should protect each other.

“So during the night, some of the other believers lowered him in a large basket through an opening in the city wall.”
    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭9:25‬ ‭NLT‬‬

  18. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Searching the scriptures for direction is one of the greatest principles we can practice in our lives. Many ask friends, family, co-workers advice but never crack open the WORD to ask the advice of the Lord. Some people would be amazed at what the WORD of God has to say about their situation. Read the WORD, Eat the Word, Live the Word – a great Godly principle.

  19. Acts 17:26 From ones man he made all the nations that they should inhabit the whole earth and marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him though he is not far from any one of us. For in himwe live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said , We are his offspring.

  20. Verses 19-21 say that the Athenians wanted to hear what Paul was babbling about, that their ears hadn’t heard this strange doctrine before and it reminded me of 2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears…

  21. 30 “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. 31 For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.”

Children need the opportunities to fail and make mistakes to learn from them. Yet once older, it is not okay to make them same mistakes you made when you were younger. We must mature in Christ, to lead others to Him!

  22. Apollos is a scholar, an apologist and a gifted debator. He loves the Lord and is zealous about defending the faith. However, even with all his training his training and credentials, he still has more to learn. When Apollos teaches in the Jewish synagogue, Priscilla and Aquilla hear him. They immediately recognize him love for God, his zeal and his gifts. They also see that he needs to receive additional instruction in the truth. Rather than discussing his deficiency behind his back, looking the other way or hoping someone else will take on the task, Priscilla and Aquila invite Apollos into their home and, with gracious and openness, begin to teach him more fully the things of God. They open their home, they open their hearts, they open their mouths and they speak the truth. In partnership, this godly couple use their gifts to strengthen Apollos and ultimately bless the whole church.

  23. 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

This should be us on a daily basis. Where we can see this world in the f this should be us on a daily basis. Where we can see this world and the filth , in our spirit should automatically should stir up with in us.

I was driving down the freeway in my in-laws suburban, and I open the windows to let the cool air in. I did not realize that she had a picture of the Virgin Mary On her speedometer. In the matter of minutes the picture flew out of the window because of the air that was coming into the va on her speedometer. In the matter of minutes the picture flew out of the window because of the air that was coming into the car.
I immediately panicked because this was my in-laws god that flew out of the window. I know how much my in-laws love their god, and thought she would be angered by it. To my surprise she had a spare god in her purse. The truth is my spirit is third up every time I visit her at her home. It is full of altars and religious artifacts and candles to false deities that have no ears to hear or eyes to see.
It’s important to have this because you may be in the mist of a idolatrous atmosphere and not even realize it. But God through his Spirit will stire you up and give you advantage in this situation.

  24. 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

  25. 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

Matthew 7:7-8 Ask and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you.
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

This scripture is often referenced when concerning someone who asks God for something in their life, such as a job, relationship or other things but I think that number one thing we should use this verse for is to seek God and his will.

For God is first in our lives, and therefore we should seek after him, we need to bring ourselves to a place where we hunger for more of God in our lives and we want to grow a deeper relationship in him, for when we look our eyes on him, he takes care of our needs here on Earth

  26. 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; (17:26 KJV)

What I learned literally, every nation. That every previous verses had given what we thought that came to our mind may venture to call St. Paul’s Philosophy of religion. This information gives philosophy of history. The distinction between the Greek an the barbarian’s was radical and essential. There is a oneness of a physical structure, of conditions and modes of life, of possible or actual development, which forbids any one race or nation, Hebrew, Hellenic, Latin, or Teutonic, to assume for itself that it is the cream and flower of humanity.
